Magali Casellas & Marilyne Soubrand - Limoges University, France - Impacts of sludge stabilization processes and sludge origin on the mobility of pharmaceuticals following sludge land-spreading
This document summarizes a presentation on the impacts of sludge stabilization processes and sludge origin on the mobility of pharmaceuticals following sludge land-spreading. It was presented by Magali Casellas and Marilyne Soubrand from Limoges University in France. The presentation discussed key results from previous studies showing that the desorption ability and availability of pharmaceuticals is highly dependent on the sludge origin, stabilization process, and properties of the pharmaceutical compound. Laboratory experiments simulating sludge land-spreading found very low concentrations of pharmaceuticals in leachates and no ecotoxicity, with most compounds not detected. The presentation calls for further work to link pharmaceutical availability to sludge characteristics and properties to develop a predictive

Assessment of remediation Potentials of maize (Zea mays) on sites co-contamin...IJAEMSJORNAL
Phytoremediation is a promising technology for the remediation of sites co-contaminated with inorganic and organic pollutants. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the remediation potential of Z.mays in soil co- contaminated with Pb and antracene. Pristine sandy loam soils were polluted with Pb chloride salt and antracene at three different levels (50mg/kg of Pb, 100mg/kg of Pb, and 100mg/kg of Pb+100mg/kg of antracene) and laid out in completely randomized design with 3 replicates. Shoot dry matter weight was significantly reduced (p≤0.05) when compared with control treatments by 40% when exposed to100mg kg-1 of Pb. There was a 48% inhibition of shoot dry matter of Z.mays relative to control treatments when 100 mg Pb kg-1 was mixed with 100 mgkg-1 antracene. Root and shoot metal concentration in Zea mays increased with increasing concentration of Pb. The average Translocation Factor (TF < 1 (0.69) obtained suggests that Zea mays predominantly retains Pb in the root portion of the plant. There was a 5% increase in shoot Pb concentration when soil was contaminated with Pb and antracene. The extractable antracene decreased significantly (p≤0.05) in soil planted with Z.mays as well as in pots without maize plant. This accounted for 65 and 72% of antracene dissipation in planted soil and 40-46% dissipation in unplanted soil. This result suggested that Zeamays is a promising candidate for uptake Pb and dissipation of antracene in co-contaminated soils.
2017 - Effect of ozone addition to control Gordonia foaming on the nitrifying...WALEBUBLÉ
The ozonation of activated sludge has been used as a technical measure for bulking control in a high number of full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), despite a lack of precise
predictions on the level of reduction in filament growth or the lack of knowledge of impact on microbial community from this technique. Ozone is a strong oxidant reacting rapidly with
suspended solids. Various studies have suggested that ozone attacks the bacterial cell surface, alters the permeability of the cell membrane and ultimately results in the leakage of cell
contents. However, the microbes in the sludge form a complex matrix, and ozone may affect bacterial populations at different rates different depending on their locations in the floc or their
capacity for adaptation. Nitrification, a key step of the nitrogen cycle, is the sequential oxidation of ammonia via nitrite to nitrate. This process is catalysed by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria
(AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), whose cooperation is needed to achieve complete nitrification. Although the nitrification process in WWTPs has been investigated in depth, the response of microbial communities are still a focus of considerable interest due to their high sensitivity to inhibitory compounds and environmental factors that results in repeated
breakdowns of nitrification performance. In this study, we focus on two aspects that have not been thoroughly considered in previous studies; the use of ozone for Gordonia foaming
elimination on dynamic population of a nitrifying bacterial community, and the nitrification performance of activated sludge system.

Poster presented at a conference "Water Research at University of Oulu"Tero Luukkonen
Poster presented at a conference "Water Research at University of Oulu". The poster presents some disinfection results with peracetic acid in wastewater and sludge matrixes.
In the present study, application of Amberlite FPA-98 was investigated for the removal of Acide
Orange 7 from aqueous solution using the continuous method and was optimized using Box–Behnken design
(BBD) and full factorial design (FFD). Fixed bed adsorption has become a frequently used in wastewater
treatment processes. In this work, the intention of the study was to explore the efficacy and feasibility for azo
dye, Acid Orange 7 (AO7) adsorption onto fixed bed column of Amberlite FPA-98. The effect of operating
parameters such as flow rate, initial dye concentration, and bed height was modeled by response surface
methodology (RSM). This study compares Box–Behnken design (BBD) and full factorial design (FFD) utility for
modeling and optimization by response surface methodology. The precision of the equation obtained by RSM
was confirmed by the analysis of variance (ANOVA)and calculation of correlation coefficient relating the
predicted and the experimental values of adsorption efficiency. The results revealed a good agreement between
the predicted values, as obtained by full factorial design (FFD) and the experimental values for AO7 (R2 =
0.987) . The optimum conditions proposed by Box–Behnken design (BBD) to reach the maximum dye removal
through adsorption process. Under the optimum conditions, the removal efficiency of AO7 were (R2 = 0.959).
The application of response surface methodology in order to optimize using Box–Behnken design (BBD) and full
factorial design (FFD). The research on modeling adsorption by RSM has been highly developed and The
Amberlite was shown to be suitable adsorbent for adsorption of AO7 using fixed-bed adsorption column.
Treatment of Pretreated Landfill Leachate by Membrane Bioreactor ProcessIJAEMSJORNAL
Landfill leachate is a liquid that is mainly produced by the rain which falls on the solid waste. The leachate usually contains high concentrations of ammonium, organic matter, toxic compounds and heavy metals, which makes it unsuitable for discharge in natural bodies without any prior treatment. The formation of leachate threatens the groundwater, soil and environment. Land filling is the one of the least expensive method for disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this study, landfill leachate is treated by coagulation and Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process by using ultrafiltration (UF). The original sample has BOD/COD ratio as 0.603. Coagulation was used as a pretreatment prior to the biological treatment. . It was done by using alum as an coagulant at an optimum dosage of 160 mg/L. Coagulation has proven effective as a pretreatment. But the effluent quality did not meet the general standards for discharge of environmental pollutants. So the effluent after coagulation process was treated by MBR process. In this study, after MBR treatment all the parameters except BOD have met the relevant Indian Standards for discharge as irrigation water.

Acute scrotum is a general term referring to an emergency condition affecting the contents or the wall of the scrotum.
There are a number of conditions that present acutely, predominantly with pain and/or swelling
A careful and detailed history and examination, and in some cases, investigations allow differentiation between these diagnoses. A prompt diagnosis is essential as the patient may require urgent surgical intervention
Testicular torsion refers to twisting of the spermatic cord, causing ischaemia of the testicle.
Testicular torsion results from inadequate fixation of the testis to the tunica vaginalis producing ischemia from reduced arterial inflow and venous outflow obstruction.

As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.
