This document provides instructions for Assignment 3 which asks students to take six macro photographs that represent beauty in their everyday world and focus on principles of design, specifically repetition and pattern. Students are instructed to make their subject objects abstract and unrecognizable using a shallow depth of field. The photos should be taken up close to reveal textures, lines, and details that create patterns. Examples of previous student work are provided and students are given due dates to submit their 10 initial photos, 6 selected photos for approval, and final edited photos. Tips are provided on lighting, framing, and camera angles for macro photography.

Everyday Beauty- Up Close
• Take SIX photos that
represent your world.
• What do you find
beautiful? What surrounds
you that makes you
complete? Is it nature,
inanimate objects, people,
tools, food, soft clothes, etc.

3. Macro Photography
• The art of taking close-up
pictures that reveal details
which can’t be seen with
the naked eye.

• Making objects seem larger, greater than life size.

5. 3. Focus on ABSTRACTION!
This means making the object/thing NOT
recognizable. Making it less identifiable.

6. Abstract means…
-Unusual: Capture
something in a way that it
would not usually be seen.
-Non-representational:
not meant to look like a
certain object or thing.

so more of the image is in focus allowing
the textures and lines to create patterns.
