• Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne illness in the
United States, is a multisystem illness caused by infection with
the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and the body's immune
response to the infection. The disease is transmitted to humans
via tick bites, from infected ticks of the genus Ixodes.
• Lyme disease is most frequently reported from the upper
midwestern and northeastern U.S. Some cases are also reported
in northern California, Oregon, and Washington. In 2015, nearly,
95% of Lyme disease cases were reported from 14 states of U.S.
INTRODUCTION
• Areas of particular concern include New England, the Upper
Ohio River Valley, and the Pacific Northwest. Lyme disease
continues to be of concern in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
