Lyme Disease
A Review of:
 Etiology
 Diagnosis
 and Treatment Options
What is Lyme Disease?
• Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia
burgdorferi, a type of bacterium called a spirochete
that is carried by deer ticks.
• An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the
humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium
travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in
various body tissues, and can cause a number of
symptoms, many of which are chronic and severe.
• Often, but not always, an erythema migrans (EM) rash
appears within 7-14 days at the site of a tick bite.
ALDF
American Lyme Disease
Foundation
Coinfections
• Ticks can carry multiple infectious organisms, which can be transmitted
through the same tick bite. Lyme disease is the most common vector-
borne illness in the country.
Lyme – The Great Imitator
• Lyme disease is often called “The Great Imitator,” because its symptoms mimic many other
diseases. It can affect any organ of the body, including the brain and nervous system, muscles,
joints, and the heart.
• Common misdiagnoses of Lyme disease include, but are not limited to:
• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
• Fibromyalgia
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Arthritis
• Various Psychiatric disorders, including depression
Early diagnosis and proper treatment is critical, as unchecked, chronic Lyme can produce serious,
lasting symptoms.
Lyme – A Growing Problem
• According to the CDC, Lyme disease infects 300,000 people a year
- 10 times more Americans than previously reported.
• This new preliminary estimate confirms that Lyme disease is a
tremendous public health problem in the United States,” says Dr.
Paul Mead, chief of epidemiology and surveillance for CDC’s Lyme
disease program.
Lyme is Often Undiagnosed or Misdiagnosed
• Leaving many patients with:
• A mountain of medical bills
• Lost time from work, and
• Most importantly, greatly diminished quality of life from
symptoms that aren’t improving.
Conventional Diagnostic Testing for Lyme
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommends a two-tiered testing
approach: a conventional enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) test, followed by a Western Blot
test. The ELISA is a blood test that detects antibodies but does not test for B. burgdorferi itself.
• A positive result from this first-level screening may suggest current or past infection. The ELISA is
designed to be very “sensitive,” meaning that almost everyone who has Lyme disease (and some
people who do not) will test positive. If the screening test is negative, it is highly unlikely that the
person has Lyme disease and no further testing is recommended.
• If the screening test is positive or inconclusive, a Western blot test should be performed to
confirm the results.
Conventional Diagnostic Lyme Testing Tier
Alternative Diagnostic Testing for Lyme
• Pharmasan Labs’ iSpot Lyme is a T-Cell based test that offers an 84% sensitivity and
can detect a Lyme infection in as little as 14 days, post-tick bite. By utilizing Lyme-
specific antigens, it avoids false positives, with a specificity of 94%. Good tool for
monitoring effectiveness of treatment.
IGeneX Labs offers:
• The LYME DOT BLOT ASSAY (LDA) detects antigens of Lyme
bacteria in urine samples.
• The LYME MULTIPLEX PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Test, a highly specific and
sensitive test, detects the presence of the DNA of the Lyme bacteria.
Alternative Diagnostic Testing for Lyme
• Fry Labs provides a complete detection package that includes serologic,
microscopic and molecular, particularly PCR based, assays aimed at the specific
and sensitive detection of Borrelia spp. in patient samples. They offer the same
lab methodology testing for Babesia and Bartonella.
• Advanced Labs is unique in their offering of Spirochete/Borellia testing from
culture. A culture is a direct test that will tell you whether the infection is present,
and is more accurate than a serology (ELISA and Western Blot), which is not a
direct test and at best can only indicate prior exposure.
Lyme Testing in Summary…
• “There is no perfect test for Lyme disease.”
• As stated by Dr. Bradley Bush, founder of Natural Medicine of
Stillwater, MN. Many clinics such as Dr. Bush’s use both
conventional (two-tier CDC) and laboratory derived (iSpot Lyme,
IGeneX, Frey Labs) testing for Lyme disease and other tick-borne
diseases to best understand their patient’s situation.
• Because Lyme disease exhibits so many symptoms, doctors are
moving toward a more holistic approach to treating Lyme disease.
Treatment Options for Lyme (Conventional)
Antibiotics
• Doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil
• When required, intravenous treatment with drugs such as ceftriaxone or penicillin.
All with the undesirable effects associated with extended antibiotic use; How effective are they?
In a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine:
• “In patients with persistent symptoms attributed to Lyme disease, longer-term antibiotic
treatment did not have additional beneficial effects on health-related quality of life
beyond those with shorter-term treatment.”
• Ref: April 2016 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1505425
The Most Effective Protocol for Treating Lyme
The true eradication of Lyme and its symptoms can only be accomplished
though the:
Destruction of pathogens, boosting immune system
Removal of toxic heavy metals and chemical toxins
Restoration of glutathione levels, and
Healing the neurological and cardiovascular systems.
Only one treatment protocol provides this comprehensive approach.
The Ultimate Lyme Support System
A Breakthrough in Lyme Disease Support
A safe, evidenced-based and effective 4-product system unlike any other
Lyme intervention available.
Featuring Advanced Cellular Technology
• Intra-oral spray delivery - no capsules or pills and convenient: simply
spray, swish and swallow
• Provides immediate absorption
• Absence of side effects - no GI discomfort or impact to healthy flora

The Most Effective Lyme Disease Treatment Available

  • 1. Lyme Disease A Review of:  Etiology  Diagnosis  and Treatment Options
  • 2. What is Lyme Disease? • Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a type of bacterium called a spirochete that is carried by deer ticks. • An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, many of which are chronic and severe. • Often, but not always, an erythema migrans (EM) rash appears within 7-14 days at the site of a tick bite. ALDF American Lyme Disease Foundation
  • 3. Coinfections • Ticks can carry multiple infectious organisms, which can be transmitted through the same tick bite. Lyme disease is the most common vector- borne illness in the country.
  • 4. Lyme – The Great Imitator • Lyme disease is often called “The Great Imitator,” because its symptoms mimic many other diseases. It can affect any organ of the body, including the brain and nervous system, muscles, joints, and the heart. • Common misdiagnoses of Lyme disease include, but are not limited to: • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • Fibromyalgia • Multiple Sclerosis • Arthritis • Various Psychiatric disorders, including depression Early diagnosis and proper treatment is critical, as unchecked, chronic Lyme can produce serious, lasting symptoms.
  • 5.
  • 6. Lyme – A Growing Problem • According to the CDC, Lyme disease infects 300,000 people a year - 10 times more Americans than previously reported. • This new preliminary estimate confirms that Lyme disease is a tremendous public health problem in the United States,” says Dr. Paul Mead, chief of epidemiology and surveillance for CDC’s Lyme disease program.
  • 7.
  • 8.
  • 9. Lyme is Often Undiagnosed or Misdiagnosed • Leaving many patients with: • A mountain of medical bills • Lost time from work, and • Most importantly, greatly diminished quality of life from symptoms that aren’t improving.
  • 10. Conventional Diagnostic Testing for Lyme • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommends a two-tiered testing approach: a conventional enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) test, followed by a Western Blot test. The ELISA is a blood test that detects antibodies but does not test for B. burgdorferi itself. • A positive result from this first-level screening may suggest current or past infection. The ELISA is designed to be very “sensitive,” meaning that almost everyone who has Lyme disease (and some people who do not) will test positive. If the screening test is negative, it is highly unlikely that the person has Lyme disease and no further testing is recommended. • If the screening test is positive or inconclusive, a Western blot test should be performed to confirm the results.
  • 12. Alternative Diagnostic Testing for Lyme • Pharmasan Labs’ iSpot Lyme is a T-Cell based test that offers an 84% sensitivity and can detect a Lyme infection in as little as 14 days, post-tick bite. By utilizing Lyme- specific antigens, it avoids false positives, with a specificity of 94%. Good tool for monitoring effectiveness of treatment. IGeneX Labs offers: • The LYME DOT BLOT ASSAY (LDA) detects antigens of Lyme bacteria in urine samples. • The LYME MULTIPLEX PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Test, a highly specific and sensitive test, detects the presence of the DNA of the Lyme bacteria.
  • 13. Alternative Diagnostic Testing for Lyme • Fry Labs provides a complete detection package that includes serologic, microscopic and molecular, particularly PCR based, assays aimed at the specific and sensitive detection of Borrelia spp. in patient samples. They offer the same lab methodology testing for Babesia and Bartonella. • Advanced Labs is unique in their offering of Spirochete/Borellia testing from culture. A culture is a direct test that will tell you whether the infection is present, and is more accurate than a serology (ELISA and Western Blot), which is not a direct test and at best can only indicate prior exposure.
  • 14. Lyme Testing in Summary… • “There is no perfect test for Lyme disease.” • As stated by Dr. Bradley Bush, founder of Natural Medicine of Stillwater, MN. Many clinics such as Dr. Bush’s use both conventional (two-tier CDC) and laboratory derived (iSpot Lyme, IGeneX, Frey Labs) testing for Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases to best understand their patient’s situation. • Because Lyme disease exhibits so many symptoms, doctors are moving toward a more holistic approach to treating Lyme disease.
  • 15. Treatment Options for Lyme (Conventional) Antibiotics • Doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil • When required, intravenous treatment with drugs such as ceftriaxone or penicillin. All with the undesirable effects associated with extended antibiotic use; How effective are they? In a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine: • “In patients with persistent symptoms attributed to Lyme disease, longer-term antibiotic treatment did not have additional beneficial effects on health-related quality of life beyond those with shorter-term treatment.” • Ref: April 2016 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1505425
