2. There are over 240 museums in London. They are non profit
organisations, that collect and care for objects of cultural,
artistic, scientific and historical interest. All government funded
museums are free entry.
They are visited by people from London, and tourists from
around the UK and the world. In 2008, nearly 7 million people
visited the Tate Modern gallery!
3. The Tate Modern is the most visited modern art gallery in the
world. It contains international art work from 1900. Lots of the
work on display is abstract and they have some famous artists
like Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol.
4. The British Museum is widely considered to be one of the
world´s greatest museums of human history and culture. It has
around 8 million works on display.
It contains large ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Middle
Eastern displays. There´s also a section on prehistoric and
European history.
There is some controversy though.
Some countries claim that they should
have these artefacts returned.
5. The Natural History museum is home to 70 million earth and
scientific items. It contains a Charles Darwin section, showing
large collections of his work, but the two most famous parts are
the Large Mammal and the New Whale.
6. The Science Museum is the other big museum in London. It
contains collections of scientific discoveries with old Airplanes,
space ships and a post-war Britain collections.
Other notable museums include:
National Gallery – includes work from Picasso, Van Gogh, Michelangelo and Da Vinci.
Victoria and Albert Museum – 4.5million objects from 5000 years from all over the world.
7. Sir John Soane´s Musuem
A hidden gem amongst London´s crowded streets, this museum hosts
architect John Soane´s personal collection of historical relics. It is his
old house and has a creepy atmosphere. He lived in this house alone
after his wife´s death and dedicated his life to his work. Sculptures,
paintings and even an Egyptian tomb are on display.
8. Madam Tussauds is a
famous wax museum in
London. They have wax
works of many famous
celebrities, politicians
and sports stars.
