LIVING THINGS
LIVING THINGS
All living things have a life
            cycle.
             They:
         • Begin life
           • Grow
        • Reproduce
            • Die
Is this a living thing?
Types of living things
 There are four groups:
   ANIMALS
   PLANTS
   FUNGI
   MICRO-ORGANISMS
ANIMALS
Animals:
 Can move

 Eat plants or other animals

 Cannot make their own food

 They can be:
       Vertebrates:
              have a spine
       Invertebrates:
 do not have a spine
Vertebrates
 Mammals

 Fish

 Reptiles

 Amphibians

 Birds
Invertebrates
 Insects
PLANTS
 Cannot move
PLANTS
 make their own food.
FUNGI
FUNGI
 Cannot move
 Cannot make their own food
 They look like plants
 Fungi can be:
   Mushrooms
   Mould
   Yeasts
MUSHROOMS
Mushrooms
Mushrooms
 One part grows under the ground and
  the other part is visible
Mushrooms
 Grow from thin filaments called
 hyphae
Mushrooms
 Produce spores
Mushrooms
 Some are edible

 We can eat them!!!
Mushrooms
 Others are poisonous
Mushrooms.
         Remember!!!
 One part grows under the grow and

 Others are poisonous
MOULDS
MOULDS
MOULDS
MOULDS
 Are made up of many hyphae

 They do not have mushrooms

 They feed on decomposing
  material
 We can make antibiotics like
  penicillin from moulds
YEASTS
YEASTS
 They are microscopic

 Do not have hyphae

 Do not produce mushrooms

 We use them to make:
  wine, bread, cheese…
MICRO-ORGANISMS
MICRO-ORGANISMS
MICRO-ORGANISMS
 Are tiny living things

 We can only see them with a
  microscope
 Some are beneficial

 Others cause illnesses
Bacteria
 Are the smallest micro-organisms

 We can only see them with a
  special microscope
 Some are beneficial

 Others cause illnesses that we
  treat with antibiotics
Viruses
 They are not Living Things

 They need other living things to
  live
 We use vaccines to protect us
  against viruses
SPECIES
 Two living things belong to the
  same species if they can
  reproduce and have fertile
  offspring.
