D MSMC 84% of 11-13 year olds said they would “ rather clean their room, eat their vegetables, go to the dentist or take out the garbage than learn math or science .” From Rayethon Corporation Survey of 1000 11-13 year old students, 2006 US 15-year-olds ranked 24th out of 40 countries that participated in a 2003 administration of the program for International Student Assessment (PISA) examination, which assessed students’ ability to apply mathematical concepts to real world problems.

D MSMC This is a story about the big public conversation the nation is not having about education… … whether an entire generation of kids will fail to make the grade in the global economy because they can't think their way through abstract problems, work in teams, distinguish good information from bad or speak a language other than English. Time Magazine, 12/18/2006
06/03/09 Dr. Ludmila Smirnova, Ph. D MSMC What is ahead? How do we define Literacy in a 21 st Century Context? What are the implications for learning and teaching to the Future?
06/03/09 Dr. Ludmila Smirnova, Ph. D MSMC It is an unprecedented change in the human condition. For the first time –literally – substantial and rapidly growing numbers of people have choices. For the first time, they will have to manage themselves. And society is totally unprepared for it. The illiterate of the 21 st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. Alvin Toffler Revolutionary wealth , 2006

06/03/09 Dr. Ludmila Smirnova, Ph. D MSMC This Information Literacy is based on "Managing Information in a Digital Age“ Multicultural literacy is knowledge of cultures and languages, as well as the ways in which multi-sensory data (text, sound, and graphics) may introduce slant, perspective, and bias into language, subject matter, and visual content. Media literacy is an expanded information and communication skill that is responsive to the changing nature of information in our society. It addresses the skills students need to be taught in school, the competencies citizens must have as we consume information in our homes and living rooms, and the abilities workers must have as we meet the challenges of a global economy. Based on the idea that visual images are a language, visual literacy can be defined as the ability to understand and produce visual messages. This skill is becoming increasingly important with the ever-expanding proliferation of mass media in society.
