The 3rd Annual LinkedIn Bring In Your Parents Day took place on November 5, 2015. As part of the celebration, we asked people to share the best pieces of career advice their parents ever gave them. Here’s what they had to say...
Stand in the Gap: Have a Mentor Be a MentorJoel Mason
We talk about mentoring a lot in the software industry, but how much do any of us really know about how to mentor? If we’re honest with ourselves, we are probably making it up as we go. This talk will hopefully move beyond that and move towards having a purpose to our mentoring relationships. We will take a look at how to start a mentoring relationship, setting a purpose for the mentorship and ultimately how to make the most out of it. Whether you are a mentor, a mentee or even someone who is just interested in possibly doing this someday then you will benefit from this talk.
This is a presentation I give for kids ages k-5. My presentation begins with the children\'s book "Shapesville" which is a story of a small town where five friends of various shapes, sizes, colors, and talents honor what makes each of them unique. My presentation is designed to discuss the topics of diversity and self-esteem. The goal of this presentation is to assist kids in understanding that we have all been uniquely designed and it\'s those differences that make each of us beautiful in our own way.

Last June, we first reported our diversity metrics, and today we wanted to give an update on our progress. Our latest numbers show encouraging results, and we are pleased with our progress. Each gain is the work of many. Our numbers also show where we still have room for much more progress, so we need to be relentless in our efforts.
