LIGHTING TERMINOLOGY
• Lighting enhances the mood, intensity and atmosphere created by an
image. It can be influenced by the audiences eyeline and add to
professionalism.
• The main function of the key light is to highlight the main subject of the
image.
• It is usually included within a 3 point setup so that the model stands out
from the rest of the image.
KEY LIGHT
• Also used in 3 point setup.
• The purpose is to lessen the contrast and shadows around the subject by
being placed at a different angle to the main key light.
• It is usually softer than the key light.
FILL LIGHT
• The light is placed behind the subject to illuminate it.
• This can create a silhouette effect, separate the subject from the
background or create depth between characters or objects.
BACK LIGHT
• The camera is positioned about eye level.
• The key lighting is the brightest and most powerful at a 45 degree angle to
the camera.
• The fill is on the opposite side of the camera and fills the shadows creating
a softer im age.
• Back light is directly behind the model creating a contour of light around
their hair and figure making it more professional and dramatic.
• No shadows on the models face which accentuates the eyes.
3 POINT LIGHTING
• Images that are brightly lit using one key source of light directly aimed at
the model.
• Fill lighting is increased to the same level as key lighting therefore appears
very bright and soft with few shadows.
• Creates a happy, positive and optimistic atmosphere.
HIGH KEY LIGHTING
• The fill light is at a very low angle causing the frame to be cast with large
shadows.
• Creates extreme contrasts between the dark and light sections of the
image but illuminates the models face.
• Creates a mysterious and sombre atmosphere.
LOW KEY LIGHTING
• The deliberate manipulation of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic
effect.
• Gives you more control on where you want the audience to focus.
• Examples of artificial light sources include incandescent bulbs, halogen
lamps and LED’s.
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING
• Lighting from a natural source such as the sun.
• You can manipulate the effect of natural lighting with the position of your
model.
• If the sun is behind the model it will be backlit.
• If the sun is in front of the model it will be high key.
