Essay on Use of Geographic Data in Natural Disasters
Missing Figures The use of geographic data in the field of preventing and mitigating natural
disasters remains a pioneering activity. However the circulation of the technology is still hindered
by many issues such as the difficulty in obtaining the appropriate raw data, the lack of effective
graphical user interfaces, the intricacy of predictive models and the expense of digitisation
(Carrara et al., 1999). Natural disasters are becoming more frequent around the world, as seen in
figure 1, which shows that in 1975 there were approximately 50 disasters... Show more content on

science and technology, which is used to acquire, measure, analysis, store, manage, display, diffuse

of human activity upon the environment becoming more apparent in the form of climate change,
the Geomatics industry is becoming more important in mapping temporal changes and spatial
distribution especially in the case of natural disasters, but is also significant due to globalisation, in
mapping social, economic or distribution aspects globally and locally. With the Earth s first
satellites being launched in the early 1970 s, there have been fast advances within the industry since
then and whilst there have been many failures, these have mainly been due to the incorrect
application of remotely sensed data rather than based upon their intrinsic limitations, however
despite the failures, the Geomatics industry continues to be valuable in aiding and protecting
countries against natural disasters and with the monitoring of disasters (Carrara et al., 1999).
Furthermore, the awareness of geographical data processing is becoming more widespread among
western countries along with many developing nations, which enables faster response times to

The World Of Graphic Design
The world of Graphic Design has been revolutionized time and time again with many artists
setting high standards for aspiring graphic designers. Two artists who are interesting and
innovative in their own ways are graphic designers Chipp Kidd and Jennifer Morla. Kidd has
created many design successes with some of his most famous book jackets being Jurassic Park,
Naked by Davis Sedaris and All the Pretty Horses. The designs of the books are all drastically
diverse, making it difficult to pinpoint the designs to one single artist. However dissimilar the
designs are, they have two things in common; they are innovative and perfectly reflect the
content of the pages between the covers. Jennifer Morla is an artist with a differing career from
Kidd. She focuses on branding of companies rather than book jackets. She has worked with
companies such as Levi s, Apple Computer, Design Within Reach, Wells Fargo, Herman Miller to
help form a clean brand for the companies. I am researching the histories of both Chipp Kidd and
Jennifer Morla because they are both trailblazers in the Graphic Designworld and have come from
drastically different backgrounds. Their histories and accomplishments can have a great impact on
aspiring graphic designers.
To begin, we will take a trip back in time to the summer of 1964. This was the time when perhaps
the most recognizable book cover designer, Chip Kidd, was born. He grew up in a small town in
Pennsylvania and his infatuation for pop culture and

Number 11 Research Paper
Show business is a tough field, and even the biggest names in Hollywood need to build friendships.
Some of these friendships are fortunate enough to develop into dynamic duos: two people who
mutually support and respect each other without trying to outshine their counterpart. With that in
mind, here are Hollywood s top 10 dynamic duos.
Number Ten: Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev. These girls know how to comfort each other s
broken hearts. After her split with Ryan Seacrest, Nina took Julianne out for a night at a basketball
game. Julianne did the same with Nina when she broke up with her co star Ian Somerhalder.
Always there to offer their shoulder to one another, these two definitely epitomize best friend goals.
Number Nine: Katy Perry and Rihanna. Not only have they shared the passion in music, but these
two have also bonded over fashion. Katy revealed the story of their friendship that started with a
sparkly Valentino bag. Rihanna also threw an awesome bachelorette party for Katy when she was

Some have labeled Oprah and Gayle one of the most infamous friendships in Hollywood. Winfrey
and King have been friends long before Oprah was a household name. For me, these ladies have one
of the most iconic friendships in showbiz.
Number Seven: Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. Although they have feuded and made up a
couple of times, Taylor has been Selena s rock especially during her extremely public breakup
with Justin Bieber. Not only have these two been friends for a long time, but they also become
birthday besties by throwing surprise parties for each other and their friends.
Number Six: Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts. Both of these Aussie actresses are known for their
perpetually glamorous style on the red carpet. Nicole and Naomi were classmates in high school,
and ever since then the two were always rocking the fashion scene, not to mention killing it with
their critically acclaimed roles in the film

Rikki Tiki Theme Analysis
Rikki Tikki Tavi Theme is the thoughts, or an exhibition on a story or piece of writing. My
central idea for the theme of Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rydyard Kipling is blind loyalty. I am positive
that loyalty is one of the superlative themes of this story because throughout the story, both the
protagonist and antagonist show loyalty. Rikki Tikki, the protagonist, shows his loyalty to the
human family, his own family, and Darzee by protecting them from the immoral Naginia. Another
correct theme could be bravery. The story emphasized the courage of Rikki and contrasted that
with the cowardly behavior of Chuchundra the muskrat. Rikki reveals his loyalty to Darzee after
he acknowledges that Nag had eaten one of Darzee s children who had fallen

The Famous Painting Of Abraham Lincoln Hangs At The Capitol
We often talk about Francis Bicknell Carpenter here at Cortland County Historical Society. His
famous painting of Abraham Lincoln hangs at the Capitol and he was born and raised in Homer.
However, there is another native of Cortland County who has three important statues prominently
displayed in Washington, D.C. Curious? His name was Clark Mills and he created the first
equestrian statuein America and his life began in Taylor. Clark Mills was born in Taylor but the
information available to us does not give us a definitive date. Suffice it to say that it was
between 1810 and 1815. His father died when he was just five years old and then he was placed
with an uncle. This was typical of the time as women had few options to provide... Show more

The horse appeared perfectly balanced on his hind legs and was very lifelike. It was agreed that
he would be paid $12,000 to execute the statue and the bronze would be provided. It took 2 years
to make the plaster cast and a lot of trial and error. A statue of this size of bronze had not been
attempted in the United States to that date. The bronze was from cannons which were captured by
Andrew Jackson during the second war with England. The statue was dedicated in January 8, 1853
and placed in LaFayette Square in Washington, D.C. It is still there, directly across from the White
House. Congress was so pleased with the delightfully original statue that they added $20,000 to
the fee which had already been paid. With the mold already made, Mills was commissioned to
make the same statue to be placed in New Orleans in 1856. A third replica was ordered for
Nashville, Tennessee and dedicated in 1880. Mills next project was an equestrian statue of George
Washington. He was also chosen to complete Statue of Freedomwhich was designed by Thomas
Crawford. Crawford had gotten as far as making the plaster model but had died before having the
chance to cast the statue in bronze. Mills purchased land close to Washington and built a studio
and a foundry to complete the orders which he had received. The Washington statue was very
different from the Jackson statue and Mills was paid $50,000 to create it. The finished product was
completed and dedicated in 1860 and

Ezra Pound And Modernist Poetry
The following poems share a similar theme: Ezra Pound s A Few Don ts, Wallace Stevens Of
Modern Poetry, Archibald Macleish s Ars Poetica, and Marianne Moore s Poetry. Each of these
authors felt they had discovered superlative methods to write the most powerful poetry. However,
the details and methods which each author used varied from one another. Born in 1885, Ezra pound
is known as one of Modernist poetrys biggest contributors. His poetry of the early 20th century
was unconventional and controversial for its time. He studied endlessly to understand every facet
of poetry and pave his own way in the field. He pioneered the imagist movement and developed
rubrics which imagist poems were to follow. In A Few Don ts, Ezra Pound... Show more content on

His poetry is experimental and was influenced by the works of numerous modernist poets. As he
aged, his poems developed to be more traditional. Many of his works in the 1930 s analyzed
social and political issues that plagued the world during this period. Ars Poetica challenges how
one interprets their own reality, and his own guidelines to powerful poetry. He uses strong, apt
images to convey his points. MacLeish believes a poem should be worldess As the flight of
birds (MacLeish 789). This poem is much more abstract than the other two, but shares the same
theme of trying to connect to the reader and illicit strong feelings. MacLeish believes that A
poem should not mean But be (MacLeish 790). A poem should speak for itself and use strong
images for the reader to ponder. This leaves the poem more open to interpretation and discussion.
Marianne Moore was born in Missouri in 1887. She was a modernist poet; however, the subjects
which she chose to write about differed from the average modernist. Most modernist poetry during
this time was centered around the state of modern civilization. Moore chose to center her poetry
around animals, nature, and poetry itself. Her poem Poetry starts off somewhat perplexing when
she states I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all this fiddle (Moore 791).
This is demonstrating irony, because

is because the crystals do not stop forming until the magma has completely cooled which

U.s. Foreign Policy Of Containment
George Kennan George Kennan was a major factor in the U.S. foreign policy of containment, which

Union in other countries. After World War II, George Kennan, ...a career diplomat and expert on

Communism throughout other countries, so in order to provide a counterforce and protect
American capitalism, Kennan developed the idea of containment that defended threaten countries

army alliances. Eventually, the containment policy was significant in America and around the
world because it was ...a critical turning point in the development of the Cold War, providing a
compelling rationale for wielding U.S. power throughout the world. (Roark, Pg.870) (Roark,

Theme of Voice in Their Eyes Were Watching God Essay
Breaking Through
In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God written by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie the protagonist
is seen by critics as having no voice. For all women silence knows no boundaries of race or
culture, and Janie is no exception. Hurston characterizes Janie with the same silence that women at
that time period were forced into, (complete submission.) Women were to be seen and not heard.
Janie spends forty years of her life, learning to achieve/find, her voice against the over ruling and
dominate men in her life. But in the end Janie comes out the victor, breaking the silence. In her
essay What do Feminist Critics Want? Gilbert states, Like Wagner s master singers....men had the

Janie s actions are stronger than words, Janie s trial at the end of the novel, proves, Janie s silence to
be more powerful than articulation.
Hurston uses the narrative consciousness in Their Eyes, to characterize those who are silent and
lack their own voice, by doing this Hurston gives depth, to those whose voices, are heard.
Throughout the entire novel, the development of the male voice seems to parallel the
development of Janie s. The men in Janie s life have voices, and it is by her relationships with
these men, that Janie s voice gets stronger. Janie becomes more self confident with each
relationship she endures. Hurston, by using the consciousness narrative, is actually speaking for
Janie; the narrator and Janie are like one. This might be the reason that Hurston gives little voice
to Janie s character. Janie is not silenced in the novel, she is expressed through the narrative.
Which if the reader does not close read, the reader will not comprehend this aspect of Hurston s
novel.
Passion and control correspond to voice and silence, as expressed by the three relationships in
Janie s life. Hurston brings together the men and women in her novel, comparing Janie s personal
growth to the three significant men in her life ( Logan, Starks, Tea Cake, which all three were her
husband.)

Mikhail Gorbachev Decade
I think that Mikhail Gorbachev should be Person of the Decade. Mikhail Gorbachev was born on
March 2, 1931 into a Russian Ukrainian family in Privolnoye, Russia. His father, Sergei, and
mother Maria were both peasants. After three years in the Russian Army Mikhail s father returned

showed a natural ability at. As Mikhail reached his teenage years, he helped out his familyby
working at a machine stated driving tractors. Once he reached the age of 17 he was known as the

while on the other side, Mikhail did not. When it came down to it Gorbachev ended up agreeing
with Reagan in the year of 1987, making it the first ever mutual agreement on nuclear weapons

Soviet Union on March 15, 1990 with election coming from the Congress of People s Duties. His

Thomas Hill Ideals Of Human Excellence And Preserving...
In Ideals of Human Excellence and Preserving Natural Environments , Thomas Hill explores the
idea that those who would destroy natural environments may lack necessary human virtues. He lays
out this idea through these claims:
1.A person who views non sentient nature as a resource may be clouded by self importance.
The idea here Hill highlights as one of perspective the inability to see oneself as part of nature. This
ties in with his next claim.
2.A person who would harm natural environments may lack humility by avoiding seeing himself as
one among many natural creatures.
Hill would make a distinction here from just perspective to one of attitude, if one sees themselves as
part of nature and yet would still destroy it then they are making the value judgment that humans
are more important than nature.

Themes of Shelley s Frankenstein Essay
Mary Shelley discusses the themes of birth and creation, appearance and the necessity of
companionship, love and acceptance in her novel Frankenstein. The themes that are explored in
Frankenstein are relevant to today s modern world. Shelley challenges readers by endorsing and
confronting attitudes and values in her text through the events, circumstances and outcomes that
take place in the novel, thus causing the reader to reflect upon their own lives and in turn the
society around them. Shelley raises in her text an issue that is on the forefront of discussion in the
modern world, that of man taking the place of God and the role of woman in the creation of life.

One of the main themes in Frankenstein is appearance and acceptance. In today s society and
the society in which Frankenstein is set, people often judge one another solely based on
appearance. Social prejudice is often based on looks. Be it the colour of one s skin, the clothes
they wear, facial features or even ones body expressions. People make snap judgements based on
what the eye beholds. Today s schools are a prime example of this as people are classified
instantly and almost unknowingly. There s a lot of hate around here, Gentry Robler, 16, a
sophomore at Santana High. He reels off the high school cliques: the gothics, the freaks, the
dorks, the jocks, the Mexican gangsters, the white supremacists. Time March 2001 pg. 24 This
example of the significance of appearance in modern society is also echoed in Frankenstein. The
parallel between the society in the novel and modern society is that of snap judgements based
solely on appearances. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein is a perpetrator of such judgements.
Victor selected his features as beautiful. Here it is seen Victor s shallowness as he picked the most
perfect body parts and beauteous features, all to be pieced together in great anticipation. However

Should High School Students Get An Honor Code
Students copying answers of the assignments from their peers or internet is abundantly common in
high schools. Even the students with high morals sometimes do copy from their peers when they
need to for the sake of their grades. Colleges look at the students grades to determine if they are
good enough to enroll in their schools. Parents look at the grades to decide whether their children
are doing well in the schoolor not. It becomes the grade, not the educationthat matters. Even though
the teachers warn the students about how plagiarizing and cheating come with punishments, the

Purple as well as Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye.
In African American texts, blacks are seen as struggling with the patriarchal worlds they live in
order to achieve a sense of Self and
Identity. The texts I have chosen illustrate the hazards of Western religion, Rape, Patriarchal
Dominance and Colonial notions of white supremacy; an intend to show how the protagonists of
Alice Walker s
The Color Purple as well as Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye, cope with or crumble due to these
issues in their struggle to find their identities. The search for self identity and self knowledge is
not an easy task, even more so when you are a black woman and considered a mule and ... Show

If Celie looks for God in a white church or a white written Bible it is inevitable that she will
encounter a white God, therefore she must look at her immediate environment for guidance.
Celie then accepts and employs Shug s ideology that God is inside you and inside everyone else.
In her rejection of the Euro central God who doesn t listen to her prayers, Celie liberates her Self
and finds identity evident in her signing of her letters which she now addresses to Nettie. For the
first time in Celie s life, the colour people (purple) are recognized by God and she is liberated
with the belief that the colour purple/people is/are noticed as a part in God s majestic composition,
and that this God is everything and everywhere.
It is thus possible to identify Celie with the color purple by realizing that she has gone unnoticed
and is finally being noticed as she asserts her existence. This existentialist epiphany becomes
manifest when Celie writes, I m pore, I m black, I may be ugly and can t cook, a voice say to
everything listening. But I m here.

Summary Of IVe Been To The Mountaintop
The day before Martin Luther King Jr s assassination, MLK Jr. spoke at Mason Temple in
Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968 about the Memphis Sanitation Strike. The intention of the
speech I ve Been to the Mountaintop was to convince other African Americans to band together and
support the sanitation workers after two black, garbage collectors died in an accident. The deaths
caused others to realize the unequal treatment of blacks and whites in the workplace. MLK uses
ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade fellow African Americans to band together in a nonviolent
movement for the equalization between races.
Ethos is an appeal to ethics in writing to convince the audience of the speaker s character. In the
start of the speech, King tells about a hypothetical journey through the ages of time. He mentions
the Great Depression and uses the famous words, We have nothing to fear but fear itself. a
paraphrased line from John F. Kennedys inaugural address. The use of JFK s words gives
credibility to King by mentioning and remembering a popular past President. Another example of
King s use of ethos is in this quote, Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I
read of freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the
greatness of America is the right to protest for right. Martin Luther King Jr. says this because these
are all amendments in the Constitution that were not being applied to African Americans even
though these are

Aetiology And Pathogenesis Essay
Aetiology and Pathogenesis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a non preventable inflammatory neurodegenerative demyelinating
disease. The pathogenesis of MS is a debatable topic and still needs to be better understood. (1,3) .
In histological assessments, both the myelin sheath and oligodendrocytes are damaged and attacked
by cells of the immune system. Both, the humoural and cellular immune responses, are present.
First a T cell phagocytic reaction by macrophages and targets the myelin sheath and
oligodendrocytes. this is followed by the secretion of anti myelin antibodies from B cells,
opsonisation of the myelin sheath and activation of the complement cascade (1,3,4).
There are several theories used to explain the mechanisms of demyelination. ... Show more content

Online tools/options
In recent years, technology has become recognized as an effective tool for providing learning and
collaboration opportunities for educators, particularly in rural area. The use of technology can
break down the barrier of distance and compensate for the lack of peers for teachers in rural district.
Researchers have found new teachers, including special education teachers can utilize various
forms and options to connect, learn, and receive support to increase their teaching skills resulting in
an increased retention rates. In Idaho local districts, the state department of education, and several
higher education institutes implemented a teacher preparatory program for special educators,
which incorporated online courses, field experiences throughout the teacher preparation program,
and collaboration time with trained mentors (Johnson, 2009). The research results indicated the
strong collaborative relationships and use online learning increases the effectiveness of special

Gay Adoption Should Be Legal
Gay adoption is a touchy subject to a lot of people. Even though gay adoption became legal in all
50 states on June 26, 2017 everyone still seems to have an opinion on the matter and a lot of the
opinions lean toward not allowing gay couples to adopt. There are so many children in the foster
care system that need loving and stable homes so why not let gaycouples give that to them? There
is a lot of evidence to show that gay couples can be just as good at parenting as a straight couple.
Maybe even better due to them being committed and better motivated because they chose to be
parents. No child should be denied parents that will give them a loving and stable home just as no
couple should be denied a child due to their sexual preference.... Show more content on

Not a single study has found a difference (between children of gay and straight parents) that you
can construe as harmful. (Dan Gilgoff, 2005) While the debate continues on whether or not to
allow gay couples to adopt, the numbers of children with gay parents keeps increasing. Children
with gay parents thrive and continue to do just as well as children in straight homes. However,
critics disagree and feel that children living in gay homes are at risk of having an unhappy life.
Gregory Rogers, a writer living in South Africa, believes that children in gay homes will have
issues that include the instability of homosexual relationships, evidence of widespread pedophilia
within the gay community, and the possible psychological and social problems associated with
children reared in homes without a mother and a father. Rogers believes it is wrong to trust
homosexual couples with the fragile and impressionable development of children.(2013) Even
though a lot of people feel the same way that Rogers does, that does not mean that it is true.
Statistics have shown that children that are raised by gay parents do just as good as children raised
by straight parents. Kerry Hosking, a psychology and metaphysics student said It is not possible to

The Birth, Life, And Resurrection Of Swing
The Birth, Life, and Resurrection of Swing
The recent increase in attention to Swing dancing has brought along a sense of nostalgia with it.
This pleasant dance movement is largely fueled in part by the images of what would be today s
youth grandparents time, which have been passed down. The reality of Swing though was that the
true Swing Era of 1935 to 1945 occurred during a time unrest, and was filled with racial tension,
war, poverty, adolescent unrest, and gender discrimination. In fact, the era of Swing encompasses
two of the most historical events of the century for the United States, the Great Depression from
1929 1939, and World War II from 1939 1945. While Swing musicis known for having its happy up
beat rhythms, and light moods, it cannot be said that the music does not encompass the heaviness
of the social, political, and economic undercurrents of its time.
The term Swing was originally coined not for the dance, but for the music. Swing music was born
during the Great Depression, while many bands had been experimenting during the early Roaring
Twenties it was suggested that the ...summer of 1929 began the journey toward the summer of
1935 and the official arrival of the Swing Era (Hennessey, 123). While the Great Depression was a
time of increased poverty and unemployment, the formation of big bands was not impacted, during
this time there were many available musicians who were looking to work with new bandleaders
(Barnet, 44). While bands were able

parents. Alina Tugend, an experienced journalist, wrote an essay called, Vocation or Exploration?
Pondering the Purpose of College. Tugend s goal of this article is to inform the audience of college
students and their parents that college is continuously changing its aspect which leads us to
different options when approaching college. This is why making the right choices after graduating

essay she mentions many quotes and information from a variety of people. A big point she makes
is that college or furthering your education after high school concept has completely changed over

internship programs, and professional training. The bottom line of her argument is how are
students and parents suppose to make a crucial decision for their future when our world keeps
changing its needs and educational values?
Throughout the essay, Tugend used an effective amount of ethos for readers to understand her
character and credibility. She did a wonderful job on not viewing one side of the argument.

Power In A Tale Of Two Cities
Power is the Silent Assassin Charles Dickens, a prosperous author by the age of twenty five, was
born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7, 1812. A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles
Dickens in 1859, is considered to be one of the darkest of the major books that he wrote. The

The peasants have changed the laws since the French Revolution started, which is very hypocritical
considering one of the reasons for the war was to fight for justice against the nobles unjust court
system, and now they are doing the exact same thing to the nobles, even the innocent ones, for
revenge. An officer immediately jails Charles Darnay, an honorable man, into solitary confinement
in a prison named La Force because he is accused of being an emigrant. When the officer asserts,
Without doubt. You are consigned, Evremonde, to the prison of La Force (195), Darnay exclaims,
Under what law, and for what offence? showing the unexpectedness of his imprisonment. In this
novel, emigrants are nobles who have fled from their homes, and though Darnay denounced his
family name years before, he belongs to the Evremonde family, and therefore, must die. During the
French Revolution, the peasants commonly made vulgar jokes about the Guillotine, which was a
new weapon used to behead its victims. They laughed about the weapon and how they killed many
people with it, saying, it was the best cure for headache (212). We can conclude the reader no longer
supports the peasants nor wants the French Revolution to occur due to their inhumane behavior

How Ancient Greek Culture Has Influenced The Present Day...
Greek Pottery Ceramics has played a substantial role throughout history, so that is why the
Greeks made sure to make a sizable imprint on ceramics through their intuitive approach on clay
objects. Before we can learn about the ancient Greek ceramics we must first learn about ancient
Greek itself. The culture is believed to of had its first evidence of burials in 7250 BCE, and the
culture lasted all the way to 146 BCE. Ancient Greek culture has influenced the present day more
than most people will ever understand, ranging from their form of government all the way to their
architecture! In an article from the Confucius Institute it is stated that, In 510 BC Cleisthenes
introduced profound reforms which made democracy exist as a system of government for the first
time in the world. In general reforms were to diminish the role of aristocracy, eliminate financial
differences and mix the society (Athens University, 1). Greek culture also played an immense role
in the science and math world, ranging from Pythagoras and the pythagorean theorem to
Archimedes of Syracuse and his foundations for hydrostatics. If you follow philosophy then you
will know that their are big philosophy names in greek culture, for example Socrates, Plato, and
Aristotle. We all know about the vast amount of knowledge behind Greek architecture (Parthenon,
temple of Zeus, Kalimarmanon), so we will talk about their art; Greek art ranged from sculptures
to ceramics, and amazingly their art is still

Interpersonal Attraction
Interpersonal attraction can be defined as how and what attracts us to individuals. As a college
student, I am constantly judging people by the first moment I meet them because I am frequently
searching for friends and relations in my life. What sparked my interest to research this topic was
my fondness for the opposite sex. I was curious as to what attracted to me to certain men and not
others. Initially, I believed I was drawn solely to men from a physical attraction in an original
engagement, but I found that there is more to this matter. Although physicality is a large degree of
interpersonal attraction, research proves that there are several other determining factors playing a
part in attraction on first encounters. The most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the atmosphere of technology, the ability to contact more people has dramatically increased,
but attraction is still hard to form if one has never met them (Johnson, 2000). The almighty
Facebook.com fanatics like myself have over a hundred friends, but my real friends that have
this global college networking, are the people I am in close physical proximity to; I think it is
hard to have a true attraction to people through a photo and email since it is not in physical
closeness and it seems unrealistic. A picture displayed online is not nearly as strong as actual
physical contingence. Accordingly, the possibility of attraction on first encounters drastically
increases if individuals are in close proximity to each other. People in close proximity
subsequentially increase their familiarity to individuals. Familiar people are more likely to be
attractive because they are judged to be safe, least likely to cause harm, and inexpensive in time
and effort. Initial appeal is most highly prominent when one is easy to physically approach
(Kazdin, 2000). The people I see on Arcadia s college campus, I expect to be harmless and
amenable for the reason of familiarity. To exemplify this, the exposure effect states that the more
exposure to a stimulus, the more apt we are to like them; the more times I see someone at college,

The Importance Of Street Culture In El Barrio
There is an area in NYC named El Barrio within El Barrio there is a large group of working class
Puerto Rican residents living their lives but struggling with facing street cultural and their ethnic
background. Living in harsh situations put a toll on the residents that were trying to live and make
it out. In El Barrio, street culture is clustered and influential and is challenging for them to continue
the traditional Puerto Rican culture. In this paper, I agree that street culture has a significant impact
on the resident than their traditional Puerto Rican culture, I demonstrate by looking at their jobs,
relationships, drug usage. Also, looking at substantial, significant residents Primo for a male
aspect, Candy for a female perspective, but connect to the whole community in El Barrio. I believe
this is significant because these are the three main topics that was brought up also the two main

to have more of an influence of tradition.
Jobs had a significant factor on the residents in El Barrio and is profoundly affected by the street

trade that they learned, and they stayed at for years many never left. Even though working
conditions were not high and most worked as assembly line work they stayed with it. There were

Comparison of Moses and Odysseus
The stories of heroes have been at the axis of nearly all cultures throughout history. Each different
type of religion or culture has their own heroes or legends, each one of them having their
differences to go along with the beliefs at hand. On the other hand, each and every hero also has
their similarities, which therefore makes them the hero. The setting, events, and characters in each
and every story may change, but the characteristics of the hero remain basically the same. Each
person is usually made into a hero in a somewhat similar fashion. For example, many heroes begin

Odysseus s voyage had to be completed before saving his people, while Moses exodus and his
people s salvation were simultaneous. In either case, the journey is vital to the hero in order for him
to undergo a personal transformation into the legendary hero they became.
Moses fought a Pharaoh, the desert, his own people, and himself during his long journey to the
Promised Land. Odysseus also had a long journey home and while on that journey battled
Poseidon, the sea, his men, and himself. Not only are the stories of The Odyssey and Exodus
the similar, but the heroes, Odysseus and Moses, share many of the same attributes and
behaviors. Both, despite having murderous pasts, were chosen by their God or gods to be the

of their mission. And since they were helped by God or the Greek gods along the way, Moses

sacrifices for the good of the whole. They each underwent a personal transformation as a result of
the trials they faced. And each learned a lesson that they passed on as a message for their people.

Floppy disks store a small amount of information, less than a CD or DVD. One important detail
about them is that they are portable, meaning they are able to remove. Floppy disks are easily

The Greatest Auto Manufacturing Company, Ford Motor Company
Go Further. What does that statement actually mean? To many, it may interpret into the act of
pursuing their wants or needs or it could also mean breaking the limits of prior creativity and
experiences. What this statement can easily be correlated to what founded this country, freedom.
Freedom both describes the greatest country in the world, America, but it also arguably the greatest
auto manufacturing company, Ford Motor Company. Ford s history is so extensive and rich, that it
has influenced American lifestyle as well.
It all began more than 150 years ago when William Ford emigrated from the southern part of
Ireland. Due to the harsh conditions of the potato famine during the mid 1840s, the left for the New

This is one of his early astounding accomplishments that baffled people that heard the tail.
Henry knew that he could never become a farmer, so in 1879 at the age of 16, he left the
farmstead for Detroit. He worked as an apprentice in a mechanic shop while he also studied
bookkeeping. While he was there, he became very comprehensive with steam engines and the
infrastructure of these machines. This was one of the many stepping stones that took Mr. Ford
where he ended up. As he enjoyed his time working, he also found a woman that he would soon
marry in 1888, Clara Bryant. He quit his apprenticeship, and moved back to his father s
homestead to help with the farm. Henry had no desire to stay on a farm, and started looking for
work back in Detroit with his new wife. Due to his already extensive work portfolio, it was not
hard for Henry to obtain a secure job at a substation for Edison Illuminating Company. He
worked his way up through the company and made nearly $1,000 a year after climbing the
corporate ladder. Henry and Clara now having a steady income, decided to have their first and
only child, Edsel. He was born on November 6, 1893. Henry is starting to make a name for
himself due to the constant promotions; he becomes very well known across the city of Detroit. In
his spare time, Henry is working on his very own machine, the Ford Quadricycle. After Henry had

Visual Analysis Of Communication
As I have completed the three genres for my audience, I wanted to provide the opportunity of
teaching individuals, high school teachers and university level researchers about the nursing
community. I also wanted to expand their knowledge on the subject and facilitate ideas of possible
researching opportunities towards researchers and be able to strengthen the knowledge of the
nursing field to high school teachers to pass onto their students. In my theory of communicationI
stated that essentially nurses are responsible in all areas of communication, whether it is a change
in the audience, constraints that occur, the clarity of their content or any rhetorical situations that

The multi page website proved to be the best choice to use in allowing the researchers to be able
to access the information about the nursing community s communication. The website allowed me
to incorporate fine details of the intercommunication techniques of the community without having
too much content in one part of the media piece or not enough in another. I chose the website for
the university level researchers as it would allow them to be able to overview the details in the
intercommunication more in depth and allow them to analyze the content of my piece further.
By incorporating some visuals that backed up my claims in the improvement of communication
of the nursing community, served to add my details to my content. I incorporated two videos
within the website, the first video I placed in the home page to ease my audience in to my topic.
The second video served to be another example of how errors occur in the work field and how
these errors not only affect the patient and nurses, but the nursing community s reputation as well.
In the home page I included the purpose of the website to explain to my audience what
information they will look at in the next pages of the website. I organized my website left to right,
based on how the audience will read the website and I tried to

Gender Differences Between Work And Life
In Manage your work, manage your life, Groysberg and Abrahams use research and survey data
to show gender differences on how success is viewed. There were some similarities and obvious
gender differences in answers. On another note the article by Stewart Friedman, Work + home +
community + self, the main focus is on three key principles to focus on to be better at integration
between work and life. Each article s content can be a guide in careerplanning and to help with one
s professionaldevelopment.
The article Manage your work, manage your life discusses the popular topic of work and life
balance. Interviews were conducted and researched with over 4,000 executives worldwide and 82
executives in a leadership course over a five year course (Groysberg and Abrahams, 2014). They
broke down and compared men and women to determine how they defined what professional
success means to them, what personal success means and what their partners contribute (Groysberg
and Abrahams, 2014). The survey data showed some true gender differences on what each values
more. A large number of women define professional success by their individual achievement over
everything else. Men on the other hand define it by making a difference, next to working with a
good team in a good environment and respect from others (Groysberg and Abrahams, 2014). When
asked what personal success meant to men and women both chose rewarding relationships with
family, people they love and community at the

gene. One of these tumors is the hemangioblastoma. These tumors most commonly occur in the
retina, cerebellum, and spinal cord. Hemangioblastomas are well circumscribed, benign neoplasms
containing capillary vessels. They do not invade or metastasize but do cause symptoms from
increased pressure and hemorrhage. In the retina, they occur in the periphery or the juxtapapillary
region and they can result in vision loss from tumoredema, exudation, and/or traction. Hemorrhage
can also result in glaucoma, retinal detachment and vision loss. Retinal capillary
hemangioblastomas occur by age 60 in up to 70% of von Hippel Lindau patients.1
These CNS tumors have complex morphological features with many sources citing that the
histiogenesis is uncertain about their cells of origin. The 2006 text Tumors of the Eye and Ocular
Adenexa states that these tumors are capillary hemangiomas and are endothelium lined capillaries
interspersed with pale, vacuolated stromal cells and that these stromal cells are believed to be
astrocytes that have imbibed plasma lipids. 2 In 2008, the Intraocular Tumors: An Atlas Textbook

neoplasm. It is a diffuse vascular mass composed mostly of small caliber vessels believed to be
derived from endothelial cells of uveal blood vessels. 3 The 2011 Eye Pathology: An Atlas and Text

The Church Of The Martyrs
A church without youth is a church without a future. Moreover, youth without a church is youth
without a future. this is a quote from the former pope of Alexandria, Pope Shenouda III. Pope
Shenouda passed away about four years ago and his episcopate lasted for over 40 years. The
Coptic church has commonly been referred to by historians as the Church of the Martyrs (A Brief
History of the Christian Church). It was given this name due to the desire of martyrdom rather than
the multitude of martyrs. The five main points of its history are the origins of Coptic Orthodox
Christianity, monasticism, contributions to Christendom, the ecumenical councils and the church
today. It is believed that the Coptic church of Egypt was the first church ever created; it was
founded by Saint Mark in approximately 42 AD. (Osman) Saint Mark is also considered to be the
first bishop and pope of Alexandria. However, it wasn t until the late second century when
Christianity was truly established in Egypt. During the second century the roman emperors had
begun to persecute the Coptic Orthodox Christians formerly known as Copts; yet as previously
stated these Copts would not hide, instead they would openly worship unafraid of death, because
it is said that martyrdom isn t the end of a life, it is believed to be an entry to a new life. The very
first persecution against the Copts was in 68 AD when Saint Mark suffered martyrdom by pagan
extremists. Then for seven years in the early second century

Accounting System And The Roman Empire
Another Society with their own intricate accounting system was the Roman Empire. This comes as
no surprise because of the scope and size of the Roman Empire; accounting was once again a
necessity to a well maintained society. There is evidence of comprehensive financial statements in
the rule of Emperor Augustus circa 63 BC 14 AD. These statements included information on
expenses on statistics concerning the provinces and dependent kingdoms; direct and indirect
taxation; as well as recurrent expenditures and gifts , as well as, the amounts of cash in the
Aerarium...and in the hands of the publicani (Oldroyd, The Role... , 1995). The Aerarium was the
treasury, and the publicani was the public. These are similar to what the Chinese had because they
were used by the government to go about completing the financing and running of the empire.
These figures could be used to make it easier to track all the expenses and revenues of the
government. The government was not the only ones to keep accounting records in the Roman
Empireeither. Account books were kept by those look to maintain and achieve citizenship. It is
believed that men of property at Rome often did write up their permanent account books about
every month. They were required to do this to maintain their citizenship because citizenship was
tied to the amount of property owned and this meant a need to keep records of it. (Oldroyd, The
Role... , 1995). As well as citizens, accounting was a necessity for the soldier of

The Spanish And Mexican Period
1. The story line I am going to talk about is power and oppression, throughout California s history
there has been many events of power and oppression that has shaped California s history in many
ways. I selected this storyline because I am able to relate many of these events that have happened
throughout history. I will described the Spanish and Mexican period, the Americanization period,
the early 20th century, and the late 20th century to today.
First I will begin with the Spanish and Mexican period 1776 1846, during these period we could
see that there was a lot of power and oppression that started with the Spanish conquest to expand
their colonization. The spanish brought with them christianity trying to convert Native Americans
to become that same religion, the spanish developed a series of presidios, missions, and pueblos
in the lands of Native Americans where they were forced to change their religion, customs, and
culture to become part of the Spanish. Many Native Americans were killed by the Spanish soldiers
when they would decline to change their way of living. The Spanish practice oppression trying to
convert this people into christianity this is an example of the power and oppression the spanish
used during these period of time. After Mexico became independent from the Spanish empire the
Mexican government took control of California and during these period, the Mexican government
put an end to the mission/presidio system. The Mexican government allowed

Bob Ross Research Paper
Bob Ross was a painter, focusing mostly on landscapes using a wet on wet style, and is most well
known for his series The Joy Of Painting, and is still making ripples in the artist community today,
about 23 years after his death. Many people still watch his tutorials via YouTube or Twitch, and
even though Ross has long since passed, he will never truly die.
Bob Ross was born on October 29th, 1942, in Daytona Beach, Florida, and raised in Orlando. Bob
had one sibling, a brother named Jim. Ross would later enter the military, mentioning in one
episode of The Joy Of Painting that I was the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who
makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work , and that he was
fed up with it, saying that he promised himself that, if he ever got away, he would never raise his
voice again. This time in the military, though, was essential to his art career. Stationed in Alaska, he
developed his wet on wet style, allowing him to paint landscapes in around half an hour, saying
that I used to go home at lunch and do a couple while I had my sandwich. I d take them back that

Quiet Tidal Respiration
Respiration for speech is much different than quiet breathing. Quiet breathing, known as quiet
tidal respiration, because it can be visualized as a tidal flow of air into and out of lungs. It
involves about 500mL of air with each cycle (Seikel, Drumright, King, 2016). For instance the
volume inspired is greater, since more air is needed for utterances that are lengthy and or loud. In
order to increase your volume, additional muscles are needed to assist the diaphragm and intercostal
muscles to elevate the sternum and the ribs in order to increase the volume in the thoracic cavity

Torque, elasticity, and gravity acting on the ribs and rib cage are the passive forces for
expiration. It may also be forced, utilizing muscles of the abdomen and those that depress the rib
cage to evacuate the lungs (Seikel, Drumright, King, 2016). Since volume and pressure are
inversely related, pressure increases within the lungs and the thoracic cavity causing the air to
move out (Borden, K.S., Raphael, 1994). Expiration for speech is an active process, where
expiration for life occurs when passive forces cause inspiratory muscles to relax. In this process
there are three distinct stages that occur. First stage is where the muscles of inspiration, the
external intercostal, and diaphragm remain active to provide a braking force. These particular
muscles prevent the lungs from collapsing Nicole Bougie: Nicole Bougie: Nicole Bougie: quickly

Fahrenheit 451 Society Analysis
When Ron Jones had manipulated his class into a mild form of neo nazism, most, if not all,
took notice, with the small exception of his class. His class had no idea what they became until
the end of the experiment. This raises the question: How can you tell whether or not something
is wrong with society? Now, obviously the whole something is wrong with society boils down to
nothing more than an opinion, so as a way to measure it, I will focus on societies that are largely
believed and generally accepted to be corrupt, so as much as I d love to talk about how screwed up
our current society is, because I m in the unfortunate minority, I d have to stick with the Nazi
regime and fictional governments. I will be presenting three different corrupt policies for each
argument: Fahrenheit 451society, another fictional society, and real society The first sign that a
government or society is corrupt is cruel or unusual punishment. Governments that punish those
that have committed crimes that present no right to be punished. In Fahrenheit 451 , the greatest
look we ever get at their punishment (besides the burning houses) is what happened to the poor
chap minding his own business. The guy wasn t even doing anything even remotely criminal, but
he still was subjected to lethal punishment. Another example is the IDW universe of Transformers.

Nuclear Energy And Nuclear Power
In March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan causing a nuclear accident at three Fukushima
Daiichi reactors. The accident caused three nuclear meltdowns and the release of radioactive
materials ( Nuclear Energy ). This accident is the exact type of incident that often holds people
back from an environmentally friendly energy source. This article goes on to say that everybody in
the area was evacuated and deaths were only results of the natural disasters and not the nuclear leak.
Additionally, accidents have occurred in many other companies that do not use nuclear power, yet
they have had higher death totals. Along with these points, nuclear energy has many positive
aspects. For example, nuclear energy use has benefitted... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As global warming becomes an even greater problem and efficient sources of energy are hard to
find, nuclear energy has increased in popularity. For example, Global climate change and
depleting stores of fossil fuels have brought the need for new energy sources to the international
stage. US president Barack Obama publicly supported the creation of new nuclear power plants
in the United States as an alternative to fossil fuels ( Nuclear Energy ). Also, as the years go by,
nuclear energy is becoming a source that unites many nations around the world. For example, last
year the global community came together in Paris, France, where leaders and representatives
from almost every nation discussed the problem of global warming and what the world can do to
slow this increasingly dangerous issue. The main goal was to knock down the net of carbon
emissions released into the atmosphere to zero. Although many thought that this would be
impossible, after much discussion they realized that it would not be too difficult by using nuclear
energy. This plan has proven to be effective by both France s and Sweden s dramatic drop in
carbon emissions by using nuclear energy (Newsela Staff). Therefore, with global warming
increasing, and there being a lack of alternative energy sources to which to turn, nuclear power is
becoming increasingly popular globally due to its many benefits

Gay Marriage Should be Legal Essay
There can be no question about the definition of marriage. There is considerable evidence form
history, the origins of the word, and even its current legal use. Yet, somehow there is still tension
and confusion surrounding the issue of same sex marriage. As the debate intensifies, emotional
ones quickly replace rational thoughts. Lately, homosexuals carry out most of the fight for the right
to be married. Of course, there are several other situations, in which people attempt to challenge
traditional matrimony. There was the man who tried to marry his horse. Mormons still practice
polygamy, but just as these scenarios do not fit the definition of marriage, neither does same sex
marriage. Civil unions were created by certain states to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If a state legalizes same sex marriage, no other state has to recognize it, according to the Defense
of Marriage Act. Cultures, Christian religions, and laws still define marriage as the union between
one man and one woman. To many people, marriage is a religious institution. Churches became
the communal centers of society, because of the growing popularity of Christianity in Middle Age
Europe. They began to govern society and started to keep a record of holy matrimonies. Several
different religions immigrated to the Americas with the Europeans, but the most common theme
was Christianity. Roman Catholics, Quakers, Protestants and Jews, for example, each have their
own versions of the bible, but they are all based on Christian beliefs. American Christians accept
the definition of marriage as being of one man and one woman, because of their religious
teachings. The bible specifically mentions that God does not permit same sex marriage.
Homosexuality was forbidden by most European societies. Since the church was the center of
many communities, their rules would preside over the people in fear of the wrath of God. Our
laws reflect many traditions of the Church because Christian men founded the United States.
America is still regarded as a Christian nation, because she has implemented holy sacraments, such
as marriage into the society. Not every marriage was recorded by the church and before the church

In these cases, what would have been fair enough was to think a bit about how the portrayals of the
media would have had impacts on those people who were innocent.
Media reporting is also known as the shaping opinion device . When we talk about aborigines,
people have the tendency to link them with petrol sniffing, unemployment and drunkardness
(Johnson, 2009). People living in Australia or anywhere else are unaware or even know little
about the lives, cultures and attitudes about the aborigines in Australia. Thus media, as the
ultimate power is there to shape the opinions about the people through their provided images,
symbols and messages; in a way to act the voice of the voiceless aborigines (Johnson, 2009).
People will base their opinions on what and how the media is showing and broadcasting the
news. Here the news angle is a good example to talk about. The media need to know about proper
story selection. They should not like portray aborigines only when they are faulty and relate to it
again when another aborigine has committed a crime. This will make the rest of the world think
that all aborigines are alike and they have only to do with crimes and if we see to it, people have
based their perceptions. Media and its power of shaping opinions in a way socially construct
images and the readers swallow those truths without knowing if it is the entire truth or part of it.
A further example can be that of Louis St. John case study.

Conservatism In The 19th Century
The 19th century was considered a fundamental age of progress in science and technology. The
European region was also trying to make progress in different ways. Most of the nations in Europe
experienced relative peace and prosperity. The development came about partly due to conservative
and liberal ideologies. In the initial part of the 19th century, conservative notions were more
pronounced in Europe than any other century. In 1815, conservative ideas were substantially
expressed in the Congress of Vienna (1). It witnessed a series of meeting to decide the appropriate
strategies to adopt so as to clear the mess witnessed in the Napoleonic wars. The meetings attracted

The 19th century was essentially antithetical to conservatism, both as a system and a political
philosophy of certain parties familiar with conservative principles (11). The new enlightenment had
led to universal belief in the likelihood of boosting the human condition. However, liberals and
nationalists fought hard to change the status quo, and many governments were forced to assume
the defensive role.

The Importance Of The Usa Patriot Act
The Patriot Act of 2001 was originally intended to protect citizens against further terrorism after the
September 11 attacks. It was passed due to the overwhelming amount of support for the federal
government from the public. This act made it easier for the government to attack the funding
networks upon which terrorist organizations depended upon. The Patriot Act also encouraged
various intelligence gathering agencies, such as the CIA, and law enforcement groups, like the FBI,
to share information about suspected terrorists. Although some may argue that the Usa Patriot Act
was beneficial in protecting the United States against further terrorism, the Usa Patriot Act was and
still is, a restraint on constitutional rights. This act violates the Fourth Amendment, infringes on the
First Amendment, and has been used by the federal government to abuse their power.
The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution asserts that all citizens will be protected from unlawful
searches and seizures. The United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools
Required to Intercept Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT ACT), infringes on this amendment of
the Constitution. On April 5, 2004, Bob Barr, a former Republican member of Congress, spoke out
against the PATRIOT ACT in his speech. In the Washington Post, Barr stated that, The Fourth
Amendment is a nuisance to the administration, but the amendment protects citizens and legal
immigrants from the government s monitoring them whenever it

  • 2. Essay on Use of Geographic Data in Natural Disasters Missing Figures The use of geographic data in the field of preventing and mitigating natural disasters remains a pioneering activity. However the circulation of the technology is still hindered by many issues such as the difficulty in obtaining the appropriate raw data, the lack of effective graphical user interfaces, the intricacy of predictive models and the expense of digitisation (Carrara et al., 1999). Natural disasters are becoming more frequent around the world, as seen in figure 1, which shows that in 1975 there were approximately 50 disasters... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (1999) state that Geo Spatial Information Science is a comprehensive and integrated information science and technology, which is used to acquire, measure, analysis, store, manage, display, diffuse and apply the data related to earth and spatial distribution. Furthermore, with the continuing effects of human activity upon the environment becoming more apparent in the form of climate change, the Geomatics industry is becoming more important in mapping temporal changes and spatial distribution especially in the case of natural disasters, but is also significant due to globalisation, in mapping social, economic or distribution aspects globally and locally. With the Earth s first satellites being launched in the early 1970 s, there have been fast advances within the industry since then and whilst there have been many failures, these have mainly been due to the incorrect application of remotely sensed data rather than based upon their intrinsic limitations, however despite the failures, the Geomatics industry continues to be valuable in aiding and protecting countries against natural disasters and with the monitoring of disasters (Carrara et al., 1999). Furthermore, the awareness of geographical data processing is becoming more widespread among western countries along with many developing nations, which enables faster response times to natural disasters through ... • 3. The World Of Graphic Design The world of Graphic Design has been revolutionized time and time again with many artists setting high standards for aspiring graphic designers. Two artists who are interesting and innovative in their own ways are graphic designers Chipp Kidd and Jennifer Morla. Kidd has created many design successes with some of his most famous book jackets being Jurassic Park, Naked by Davis Sedaris and All the Pretty Horses. The designs of the books are all drastically diverse, making it difficult to pinpoint the designs to one single artist. However dissimilar the designs are, they have two things in common; they are innovative and perfectly reflect the content of the pages between the covers. Jennifer Morla is an artist with a differing career from Kidd. She focuses on branding of companies rather than book jackets. She has worked with companies such as Levi s, Apple Computer, Design Within Reach, Wells Fargo, Herman Miller to help form a clean brand for the companies. I am researching the histories of both Chipp Kidd and Jennifer Morla because they are both trailblazers in the Graphic Designworld and have come from drastically different backgrounds. Their histories and accomplishments can have a great impact on aspiring graphic designers. To begin, we will take a trip back in time to the summer of 1964. This was the time when perhaps the most recognizable book cover designer, Chip Kidd, was born. He grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and his infatuation for pop culture and ... • 4. Number 11 Research Paper Show business is a tough field, and even the biggest names in Hollywood need to build friendships. Some of these friendships are fortunate enough to develop into dynamic duos: two people who mutually support and respect each other without trying to outshine their counterpart. With that in mind, here are Hollywood s top 10 dynamic duos. Number Ten: Julianne Hough and Nina Dobrev. These girls know how to comfort each other s broken hearts. After her split with Ryan Seacrest, Nina took Julianne out for a night at a basketball game. Julianne did the same with Nina when she broke up with her co star Ian Somerhalder. Always there to offer their shoulder to one another, these two definitely epitomize best friend goals. Number Nine: Katy Perry and Rihanna. Not only have they shared the passion in music, but these two have also bonded over fashion. Katy revealed the story of their friendship that started with a sparkly Valentino bag. Rihanna also threw an awesome bachelorette party for Katy when she was still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some have labeled Oprah and Gayle one of the most infamous friendships in Hollywood. Winfrey and King have been friends long before Oprah was a household name. For me, these ladies have one of the most iconic friendships in showbiz. Number Seven: Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. Although they have feuded and made up a couple of times, Taylor has been Selena s rock especially during her extremely public breakup with Justin Bieber. Not only have these two been friends for a long time, but they also become birthday besties by throwing surprise parties for each other and their friends. Number Six: Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts. Both of these Aussie actresses are known for their perpetually glamorous style on the red carpet. Nicole and Naomi were classmates in high school, and ever since then the two were always rocking the fashion scene, not to mention killing it with their critically acclaimed roles in the film ... • 5. Rikki Tiki Theme Analysis Rikki Tikki Tavi Theme is the thoughts, or an exhibition on a story or piece of writing. My central idea for the theme of Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rydyard Kipling is blind loyalty. I am positive that loyalty is one of the superlative themes of this story because throughout the story, both the protagonist and antagonist show loyalty. Rikki Tikki, the protagonist, shows his loyalty to the human family, his own family, and Darzee by protecting them from the immoral Naginia. Another correct theme could be bravery. The story emphasized the courage of Rikki and contrasted that with the cowardly behavior of Chuchundra the muskrat. Rikki reveals his loyalty to Darzee after he acknowledges that Nag had eaten one of Darzee s children who had fallen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Famous Painting Of Abraham Lincoln Hangs At The Capitol We often talk about Francis Bicknell Carpenter here at Cortland County Historical Society. His famous painting of Abraham Lincoln hangs at the Capitol and he was born and raised in Homer. However, there is another native of Cortland County who has three important statues prominently displayed in Washington, D.C. Curious? His name was Clark Mills and he created the first equestrian statuein America and his life began in Taylor. Clark Mills was born in Taylor but the information available to us does not give us a definitive date. Suffice it to say that it was between 1810 and 1815. His father died when he was just five years old and then he was placed with an uncle. This was typical of the time as women had few options to provide... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The horse appeared perfectly balanced on his hind legs and was very lifelike. It was agreed that he would be paid $12,000 to execute the statue and the bronze would be provided. It took 2 years to make the plaster cast and a lot of trial and error. A statue of this size of bronze had not been attempted in the United States to that date. The bronze was from cannons which were captured by Andrew Jackson during the second war with England. The statue was dedicated in January 8, 1853 and placed in LaFayette Square in Washington, D.C. It is still there, directly across from the White House. Congress was so pleased with the delightfully original statue that they added $20,000 to the fee which had already been paid. With the mold already made, Mills was commissioned to make the same statue to be placed in New Orleans in 1856. A third replica was ordered for Nashville, Tennessee and dedicated in 1880. Mills next project was an equestrian statue of George Washington. He was also chosen to complete Statue of Freedomwhich was designed by Thomas Crawford. Crawford had gotten as far as making the plaster model but had died before having the chance to cast the statue in bronze. Mills purchased land close to Washington and built a studio and a foundry to complete the orders which he had received. The Washington statue was very different from the Jackson statue and Mills was paid $50,000 to create it. The finished product was completed and dedicated in 1860 and ... • 7. Ezra Pound And Modernist Poetry The following poems share a similar theme: Ezra Pound s A Few Don ts, Wallace Stevens Of Modern Poetry, Archibald Macleish s Ars Poetica, and Marianne Moore s Poetry. Each of these authors felt they had discovered superlative methods to write the most powerful poetry. However, the details and methods which each author used varied from one another. Born in 1885, Ezra pound is known as one of Modernist poetrys biggest contributors. His poetry of the early 20th century was unconventional and controversial for its time. He studied endlessly to understand every facet of poetry and pave his own way in the field. He pioneered the imagist movement and developed rubrics which imagist poems were to follow. In A Few Don ts, Ezra Pound... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His poetry is experimental and was influenced by the works of numerous modernist poets. As he aged, his poems developed to be more traditional. Many of his works in the 1930 s analyzed social and political issues that plagued the world during this period. Ars Poetica challenges how one interprets their own reality, and his own guidelines to powerful poetry. He uses strong, apt images to convey his points. MacLeish believes a poem should be worldess As the flight of birds (MacLeish 789). This poem is much more abstract than the other two, but shares the same theme of trying to connect to the reader and illicit strong feelings. MacLeish believes that A poem should not mean But be (MacLeish 790). A poem should speak for itself and use strong images for the reader to ponder. This leaves the poem more open to interpretation and discussion. Marianne Moore was born in Missouri in 1887. She was a modernist poet; however, the subjects which she chose to write about differed from the average modernist. Most modernist poetry during this time was centered around the state of modern civilization. Moore chose to center her poetry around animals, nature, and poetry itself. Her poem Poetry starts off somewhat perplexing when she states I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all this fiddle (Moore 791). This is demonstrating irony, because ... • 10. Theme of Voice in Their Eyes Were Watching God Essay Breaking Through In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God written by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie the protagonist is seen by critics as having no voice. For all women silence knows no boundaries of race or culture, and Janie is no exception. Hurston characterizes Janie with the same silence that women at that time period were forced into, (complete submission.) Women were to be seen and not heard. Janie spends forty years of her life, learning to achieve/find, her voice against the over ruling and dominate men in her life. But in the end Janie comes out the victor, breaking the silence. Janie s actions are stronger than words, Janie s trial at the end of the novel, proves, Janie s silence to be more powerful than articulation. Hurston uses the narrative consciousness in Their Eyes, to characterize those who are silent and lack their own voice, by doing this Hurston gives depth, to those whose voices, are heard. Throughout the entire novel, the development of the male voice seems to parallel the development of Janie s. The men in Janie s life have voices, and it is by her relationships with these men, that Janie s voice gets stronger. Janie becomes more self confident with each relationship she endures. Hurston, by using the consciousness narrative, is actually speaking for Janie; the narrator and Janie are like one. This might be the reason that Hurston gives little voice to Janie s character. Janie is not silenced in the novel, she is expressed through the narrative. Which if the reader does not close read, the reader will not comprehend this aspect of Hurston s novel. Passion and control correspond to voice and silence, as expressed by the three relationships in Janie s life. Hurston brings together the men and women in her novel, comparing Janie s personal growth to the three significant men in her life ( Logan, Starks, Tea Cake, which all three were her husband.) ... The intention of the speech I ve Been to the Mountaintop was to convince other African Americans to band together and support the sanitation workers after two black, garbage collectors died in an accident. The deaths caused others to realize the unequal treatment of blacks and whites in the workplace. MLK uses ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade fellow African Americans to band together in a nonviolent movement for the equalization between races. Ethos is an appeal to ethics in writing to convince the audience of the speaker s character. In the start of the speech, King tells about a hypothetical journey through the ages of time. He mentions the Great Depression and uses the famous words, We have nothing to fear but fear itself. a paraphrased line from John F. Kennedys inaugural address. • 31. How Ancient Greek Culture Has Influenced The Present Day... Greek Pottery Ceramics has played a substantial role throughout history, so that is why the Greeks made sure to make a sizable imprint on ceramics through their intuitive approach on clay objects. Before we can learn about the ancient Greek ceramics we must first learn about ancient Greek itself. The culture is believed to of had its first evidence of burials in 7250 BCE, and the culture lasted all the way to 146 BCE. Ancient Greek culture has influenced the present day more than most people will ever understand, ranging from their form of government all the way to their architecture! In an article from the Confucius Institute it is stated that, In 510 BC Cleisthenes introduced profound reforms which made democracy exist as a system of government for the first time in the world. In general reforms were to diminish the role of aristocracy, eliminate financial differences and mix the society (Athens University, 1). Greek culture also played an immense role in the science and math world, ranging from Pythagoras and the pythagorean theorem to Archimedes of Syracuse and his foundations for hydrostatics. If you follow philosophy then you will know that their are big philosophy names in greek culture, for example Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. We all know about the vast amount of knowledge behind Greek architecture (Parthenon, temple of Zeus, Kalimarmanon), so we will talk about their art; Greek art ranged from sculptures to ceramics, and amazingly their art is still ... As a college student, I am constantly judging people by the first moment I meet them because I am frequently searching for friends and relations in my life. What sparked my interest to research this topic was my fondness for the opposite sex. I was curious as to what attracted to me to certain men and not others. Initially, I believed I was drawn solely to men from a physical attraction in an original engagement, but I found that there is more to this matter. A picture displayed online is not nearly as strong as actual physical contingence. Accordingly, the possibility of attraction on first encounters drastically increases if individuals are in close proximity to each other. People in close proximity subsequentially increase their familiarity to individuals. Familiar people are more likely to be attractive because they are judged to be safe, least likely to cause harm, and inexpensive in time and effort. Initial appeal is most highly prominent when one is easy to physically approach (Kazdin, 2000). Governments that punish those that have committed crimes that present no right to be punished. In Fahrenheit 451 , the greatest look we ever get at their punishment (besides the burning houses) is what happened to the poor chap minding his own business. The guy wasn t even doing anything even remotely criminal, but he still was subjected to lethal punishment. Another example is the IDW universe of Transformers. In the comic the last days of peace on cybertron is presented in a very dark and gloomy way. For example, anyone that spoke out against the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Nuclear Energy And Nuclear Power In March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan causing a nuclear accident at three Fukushima Daiichi reactors. The accident caused three nuclear meltdowns and the release of radioactive materials ( Nuclear Energy ). This accident is the exact type of incident that often holds people back from an environmentally friendly energy source. This article goes on to say that everybody in the area was evacuated and deaths were only results of the natural disasters and not the nuclear leak. Additionally, accidents have occurred in many other companies that do not use nuclear power, yet they have had higher death totals. Along with these points, nuclear energy has many positive aspects. For example, nuclear energy use has benefitted... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As global warming becomes an even greater problem and efficient sources of energy are hard to find, nuclear energy has increased in popularity. For example, Global climate change and depleting stores of fossil fuels have brought the need for new energy sources to the international stage. US president Barack Obama publicly supported the creation of new nuclear power plants in the United States as an alternative to fossil fuels ( Nuclear Energy ). Also, as the years go by, nuclear energy is becoming a source that unites many nations around the world. For example, last year the global community came together in Paris, France, where leaders and representatives from almost every nation discussed the problem of global warming and what the world can do to slow this increasingly dangerous issue. The main goal was to knock down the net of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere to zero. Although many thought that this would be impossible, after much discussion they realized that it would not be too difficult by using nuclear energy. This plan has proven to be effective by both France s and Sweden s dramatic drop in carbon emissions by using nuclear energy (Newsela Staff). Therefore, with global warming increasing, and there being a lack of alternative energy sources to which to turn, nuclear power is becoming increasingly popular globally due to its many benefits ... • 51. Gay Marriage Should be Legal Essay There can be no question about the definition of marriage. There is considerable evidence form history, the origins of the word, and even its current legal use. Yet, somehow there is still tension and confusion surrounding the issue of same sex marriage. As the debate intensifies, emotional ones quickly replace rational thoughts. Lately, homosexuals carry out most of the fight for the right to be married. Of course, there are several other situations, in which people attempt to challenge traditional matrimony. There was the man who tried to marry his horse. Mormons still practice polygamy, but just as these scenarios do not fit the definition of marriage, neither does same sex marriage. Civil unions were created by certain states to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If a state legalizes same sex marriage, no other state has to recognize it, according to the Defense of Marriage Act. Cultures, Christian religions, and laws still define marriage as the union between one man and one woman. To many people, marriage is a religious institution. Churches became the communal centers of society, because of the growing popularity of Christianity in Middle Age Europe. They began to govern society and started to keep a record of holy matrimonies. Several different religions immigrated to the Americas with the Europeans, but the most common theme was Christianity. Roman Catholics, Quakers, Protestants and Jews, for example, each have their own versions of the bible, but they are all based on Christian beliefs. American Christians accept the definition of marriage as being of one man and one woman, because of their religious teachings. The bible specifically mentions that God does not permit same sex marriage. Homosexuality was forbidden by most European societies. Since the church was the center of many communities, their rules would preside over the people in fear of the wrath of God. Our laws reflect many traditions of the Church because Christian men founded the United States. America is still regarded as a Christian nation, because she has implemented holy sacraments, such as marriage into the society. Not every marriage was recorded by the church and before the church began ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In these cases, what would have been fair enough was to think a bit about how the portrayals of the media would have had impacts on those people who were innocent. Media reporting is also known as the shaping opinion device . When we talk about aborigines, people have the tendency to link them with petrol sniffing, unemployment and drunkardness (Johnson, 2009). People living in Australia or anywhere else are unaware or even know little about the lives, cultures and attitudes about the aborigines in Australia. Thus media, as the ultimate power is there to shape the opinions about the people through their provided images, symbols and messages; in a way to act the voice of the voiceless aborigines (Johnson, 2009). People will base their opinions on what and how the media is showing and broadcasting the news. Here the news angle is a good example to talk about. The media need to know about proper story selection. They should not like portray aborigines only when they are faulty and relate to it again when another aborigine has committed a crime. This will make the rest of the world think that all aborigines are alike and they have only to do with crimes and if we see to it, people have based their perceptions. Media and its power of shaping opinions in a way socially construct images and the readers swallow those truths without knowing if it is the entire truth or part of it. A further example can be that of Louis St. John case study. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Conservatism In The 19th Century The 19th century was considered a fundamental age of progress in science and technology. The European region was also trying to make progress in different ways. Most of the nations in Europe experienced relative peace and prosperity. The development came about partly due to conservative and liberal ideologies. In the initial part of the 19th century, conservative notions were more pronounced in Europe than any other century. In 1815, conservative ideas were substantially expressed in the Congress of Vienna (1). It witnessed a series of meeting to decide the appropriate strategies to adopt so as to clear the mess witnessed in the Napoleonic wars. The meetings attracted representatives from the Quadruple Alliance countries (Austria, Russia,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The new enlightenment had led to universal belief in the likelihood of boosting the human condition. However, liberals and nationalists fought hard to change the status quo, and many governments were forced to assume the defensive role. Bibliography Bull, Hedley. • 54. The Importance Of The Usa Patriot Act The Patriot Act of 2001 was originally intended to protect citizens against further terrorism after the September 11 attacks. It was passed due to the overwhelming amount of support for the federal government from the public. This act made it easier for the government to attack the funding networks upon which terrorist organizations depended upon. The Patriot Act also encouraged various intelligence gathering agencies, such as the CIA, and law enforcement groups, like the FBI, to share information about suspected terrorists. Although some may argue that the Usa Patriot Act was beneficial in protecting the United States against further terrorism, the Usa Patriot Act was and still is, a restraint on constitutional rights. This act violates the Fourth Amendment, infringes on the First Amendment, and has been used by the federal government to abuse their power. The Fourth Amendment of the Constitution asserts that all citizens will be protected from unlawful searches and seizures. The United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT ACT), infringes on this amendment of the Constitution. On April 5, 2004, Bob Barr, a former Republican member of Congress, spoke out against the PATRIOT ACT in his speech. In the Washington Post, Barr stated that, The Fourth Amendment is a nuisance to the administration, but the amendment protects citizens and legal immigrants from the government s monitoring them whenever it ...
