The Beat Generation By Allen Ginsberg
The Beat generation
The Beat Generation, a generation that was sick of its mainstream culture and decided to break down
the walls for individuality of thought, fashion, personal achievement, and poetry. At the end of World
War two, young adults in particularly the east and west coasts of America where left in questioning
thought about their own government as if it was really trying to do what s best for their people. And in
those upset minds a Beat Generation was born. A generation of tired young poets eager to open the
minds of others through their own thoughts and views. The most influential figures during the Beat
Generation where Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs. And although
their bold, expressive poetry led to great fame, this generation of poets gained a new fan base of critics
who thought their work was just a way to seek attention and was not seen as serious art.
Allen Ginsberg, born 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, unknowingly found himself creating a new
generation of people when he was attending Columbia University and met Jack Kerouac and William
Burroughs. There they exchanged and shared common interests and later would become prominent
figures in the Beat Movement. Allen Ginsberg s rise of fame didn t become apparent until his book
Howl and other poems came to the public eye. But what stood out most for Allen was his poem Howl ,
written in 1955, which was written particularly outraged toward the way he saw a failing society

The Theory Of Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning is based on an association between two stimuli and implies that we as
organisms are rather passive in the learning process. Operant conditioning is based on a response and
stimuli (i.e., consequences) that follow that response. Operant implies that organisms operate on the
environment to produce consequences we anticipate based on previous active learning.
Classical conditioning, the association between two stimuli is easily demonstrated in the media. For
example, advertising professionals know that they have to pair their products with something that will
trigger something in the audience. By pairing their products with something that makes people either
happy, excited, or even hungry. They know that people will want to purchase their products. Coca
Cola has been pairing their products with Christmas for years. Christmas naturally makes most people
happy and excited for the holiday season. During the Coca Cola Christmas commercial for 2010, it
starts with Santa running through a parking lot. As it continues hundreds of red semi trucks covered in
white lights appear. Through the trees you catch a glimpse of the Coca Cola label and Santa sitting in
a chair drinking a coke. While Christmas music plays children run to line the road to watch the trucks
pass. As the commercial continues the music gets louder and more lights start to light up with trees.
The commercial then flashes to a father reading a Christmas story to his son while sharing

Pros And Cons Of The Sinclair Family
The Sinclair family lost three people that they loved very dearly. The four liars did an inexplicable and
illegal thing. They committed arson and were killed in the act. All but one: Cadence survived. Johnny,
Mirren, and Gat died in a fire accident late into summer fifteen. Cadence does not recall the accident
but everybody in the Sinclair family is grieving for their deaths and Cadence s suffering. Not only
should people make memories but they should make memories with people they care about. This is
what the Sinclair family wishes that they would have done. The Sinlcairs do not always get along.
They fight and disagree over things that are not always important. People fight over different things
for different reasons. The Sinclairs were fighting over Harris s wealth. Harris s daughter wanted the

People are important to their friends and family in different ways. Friends and family spend time
together because they want to see each other and make everyone feel important. As soon as one loses
somebody though, they wish that they had spent more time with that person. I read them all, but you
can t be mad at me for not answering. It feels like homework, typing and staring at the stupid phone or
computer. (Lockhart 81) This is significant because Mirren is no longer able to respond. Cadence
misses her so much; she wants to believe that Mirren is still alive and well. However, everone misses
the liars and wishes that they would have spent more time with them. The Sinclair family misses the
liars that died but no really spent time with Johnny, Mirren, and Gat except for Cadence. The four
Liars mainly spent time with each other. They spent time together at Cuddledown and Red Gate, on
the beaches, and taking walk. They talked to each other all the time, at any part of the day. In other
words, they spent time with the people they most connected

Argumentative Essay On Winston Churchill
He is thought to be one of the most controversial personalities of world s history. Often referred to as
the British Bulldog , he has been voted as the greatest Briton of all times . Some people concern him
as defender of democracy and an incredible orator, while others criticize him strongly for his actions
during his being in power. We obviously refer to Winston Churchill, a man who left a complicated
legacy behind him and whose personality and choices influenced and still do not only British politics,
but the whole world s ones.
To begin with, Churchill was politically active from an early age. Twice named Prime Minister of the
United Kingdom, he is best known for his participation and his crucial role during World War II. With

By many he is concerned as an imperialist, a belligerent leader. He planned to conquest more
countries and expend the British Empire, because he insisted that the Aryan stock is bound to triumph
. Therefore, it is very likely that his participation in the war was the part of a wider plan and a deeper
motive. He did not just aim to defend his country from a rival. He fought for a raw white supremacism
, as expressed by Richard Toye in his book Churchill s Empire (2010).
It is true that the British leader believed in the superiority of the white race, which explains why his
policies reflect racism as well as fascism. A pretty good example that justifies this opinion is his
attitude towards the starving Indians in 1943. The famine in Bengal broke out because of his decision
to divert food supplies from India to the front lines in Europe during the war and, as a result, millions
of Indians starved to death. Nevertheless, Churchill was indifferent and insisted that it was their own
fault for breeding like

The Beneficial and Detrimental Effects of Phonology Essay
For years, phonology has been incorporated into language education. Young children are introduced to
phonics as educators take them through visual flash cards, teaching them the sounds of the alphabet.
Children learn to connect sounds into words, using what they learned from the alphabet to apply a
system of sounds into a word. Controversy regarding this reading education method has additionally
been popular. Although researchers have found negative effects in learning to read phonologically,
teachers can still strategically incorporate it into the classroom as long as they are aware of its
potential negative effects. According to Bentin S. (1991), phonological awareness is the ability to
recognize the internal phonetic structure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is partially because the English language is sometimes difficult to phonetically learn since some
rules do not apply and it becomes confusing for the learner and difficult for the educator. Although
semantics appear to be a beneficial method, there are many scholars who argue otherwise. Dewhurst,
S. and Robinson, C. (2004) discuss some of the negative effects among children whose education
focuses more on semantics than phonetics. The study was conducted on 5,8, and 11 year old children
and children from each age group falsely recalled nonpresented items related to the study lists (782).
Although the study varied depending on the age group, it was clear that the focus of semantics has
caused children to have memory illusions as they read (782). Many scholars argue that phonetics is the
most effective way to teach reading skills because it makes the individual a better reader in the long
run. Once a child can phonetically read, they have the capability to pick any book up and sound out its
contents. Children who learn semantically are unable to do this because they learn to memorize certain
words as they go. A positive element to learning semantically, however, is the child s ability to read
quickly. Once a child has established a memorization and recognition to words, they are able to read
very quickly. Children who learn phonetically are often slower since they are sometimes required to
stop and sound it out . However

The Impact Of Japonisme On European Art
A few centuries ago Western world could only perceive Japanese culture through the stories of
travellers, merchants and writers. However, as the transport and communication technologies
advanced, Japanese culture outspread giving the start to Japonisme (French term). It appeared at the
end of XIX century when isolation ended and japanese art arrived to the West. Japonisme had a huge
effect on Western artists making them rethink the way they view world. So, the aim of this paper is to
reveal the impact of Japonisme on the European art, more precisely, to answer the question: „How did
Japanese art influence Western designers in the 19 th Century? quot;.

These European collectors could possibly be accused of mere

which were thoroughly authentic, for all their fairy tale, never land aura, and conveyed affirmative
information about the Far East. A more realistic perception of China and Japan was promoted by the
international exhibitions of the later nineteenth century. However, considering that in the
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the firsthand experience was not accessible to the majority of
artists, and that channels of communication were still undeveloped, European knowledge of
Japanese art was already extremely extensive.
There has not yet been enough research into the similarities and distinction between the crazes

Anderson (2006) points out that as the printed word and industries began to prevail they had a
homogenizing effect on all vernaculars being spoken within a region. He explains Nothing served to
assemble the different people and vernaculars more than print capitalism, which, within the limits
imposed by grammar and syntax, created mechanically reproduced print languages, capable of
dissemination through the market (Anderson 2006, p. 45). Anderson describes three distinct ways in
which print languages laid the basis for a national consciousness. First of all, print language created a
unified field of communication and exchange. Because of the standardizing nature of print, people

Conformity and Obedience Essays
Conformity and Obedience Why do we conform? Two basic sources of influence: normative social
influence, the need to be liked, accepted by others and Informational influence: need to be correct and
to behave in accordance with reality. Solomon Asch (1956) devised an experiment to see if subjects
would conform even if they were uncertain that the group norm was incorrect. In his study he asked
subjects to take part in an experiment. They were each asked to match a standard length line with three
other lines. He found that one of the situational factors of conformity is the size of the opposing
majority. In a series of studies he varied the number of confederates that gave correct answers from 1

Moscovici found that consistency in the minority was important in winning over the majority with
respect to the colour of the slides. Not all decisions are made from a majority influence. For example,
the suffragettes started a movement in 1920 which changed the public and private opinion allowing
women to have the right to vote in western society. As long as a minority stick by four basic rules then
they stand a good chance of succeeding in their campaign. They need to be Consistent in their views,
Flexible not too rigid in their views, Committed to the cause until it s heard and Relevant, they have
more chance of being influential if their views are in line with social trends. Another experiment that
psychologists use in respect of conformity and obedience is an experiment that was carried out by a
psychologist named Stanley Milgram. He recruited 40 male participants by advertising for volunteers
to take part in a study to see how punishment affects learning. The study was to take place at Yale
University and everyone would be paid the same rate of $4.50 and they were informed that they would
still get paid if they quit during the study. There were two confederates one an experimenter and the
other a learner. The participants were always the teacher. The teacher was placed with the psychologist

Tax In Australia Essay
Over 570,000 backpackers travelled Australia in 2009 and many did so on Working Holiday Visas
(WHVs) to help cover the costs. Tax is the last thing backpackers think about when in Australia; that
is until it comes time to leave or file their tax return...
Having arrived in Australia under a WHVs a number of years ago I have the first hand experience of
how difficult it is to understand a new tax regime, especially one which is obscured by myths, hearsay
and misleading information. For many backpackers, this is their first experience of tax and may be
their first job which just makes things worse!
This article may help you find out some of the myths and address some issues surrounding tax in
Australia for WHVs holders.

The rate of tax that you pay depends on your individual situation, how much you have earned, other
income you have received and deductions you may (or may not!) be entitled too.
Typically, if an individual is travelling frequently, employed in casual roles and not classed as an
Australian resident for tax purposes, they will pay 29% of all earnings. This is because the Australian
Tax Office (ATO) assumes they have income in another country and place a flat rate on all earnings to
simplify the process.
Tax agents can get you 100% of your tax back
Tax is a complex matter and using a tax agent to help you can be a good call if you are unsure of some
aspect of your return. However, any agent that promises to get you all of the tax you paid returned to
you should be treated with caution.
They may be trying to mislead you or they could be lying to the tax office on your behalf either way,
you will end up in a lot of trouble. You will always be made to sign a document taking responsibility
for the actions of the tax agent.
If you want to get an estimate of your tax liability or refund due, the ATO has free calculators that you

Keith Jones In Philadelphia Sport
Philadelphia is notorious for being an extremely tough sports town. One day, the fan base can think

Now, some of you might be asking yourself, who the heck is Keith Jones? Keith Jones was a forward

The Hill By Sir William Drummond Stewart
In 1837, a wealthy Scottish nobleman named Sir William Drummond Stewart took Alfred Jacob
Miller on his outing to the Rockies. Stewart had previously been to the mountains in 1833. But due to
the failing health of his brother, Stewart thought that his journey into the American West might be his
last. So he hired Miller to pictorially record the journey. Hence, Miller became the first artist to cross
the continental divide at south past and thus, the first artist to portray the Rocky Mountains in great
detail. Stewart and Miller started out their journey from St. Louis and went across the plains of
Nebraska along the Platt River. [1] Stewart had hired Miller to paint pictures of their daily lives.
However, Miller being a son of a prosperous farmer and merchant was not accustomed to the
adversities of the journey and he quite often complained to Stewart about the hardships of the trail.
They were travelling 20 30 miles a day on their saddle so it was impossible for Miller to draw while
travelling. So, instead Miller began to sketch images with either pen or pencil during the noon hours
when they would have their large meal, as it required the least amount of time to dry before they
started heading towards their next stop. Despite the hardship of the journey he completed over 200
field sketches in both pencil and watercolor. Through the work of Miller, America got to see its

Ambrose Bierce s An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge
Ambrose Bierce
Author, Ambrose Bierce, who is considered one of the Great American authors, wrote during the
realism period. Particularly, in his work titled An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, written in 1890,
we can see evidence of the characteristics, themes and style identified with the realism movement
which was extant in American letters between 1850 and 1900. As a representative of such a
movement, Ambrose Bierce, then remains on the most identifiable and iconic writers of his time.
Ambrose Bierce was born on June 24, 1842 in Meigs County, Ohio. He later disappeared in
Chihuahua, Mexico while traveling to gain first hand experience. It is believed that he died there at
around the year 1914. He grew up poor, but his parents, who were also writers, inspired him to create
a passion for reading and writing. Later on in his life, Bierce enlisted in the Union Army during the
American Civil war. One battle that really inspired Bierce to write short stories was the Battle of

How Did The California Gold Rush Affect America
The United States of America is a country deeply rooted in history, shaped by many significant events
over the past several hundred years. From the arrival of Columbus, to the Pilgrims, the Revolution, the
Civil War, both World Wars, and much more, these events have had a great impact on the future of
America. However, one of the most often overlooked yet incredibly significant events in American
history was the California Gold Rush of 1849. The discovery of gold in the western territories
prompted hundreds of thousands of Americans to venture west. These mass migrations not only had
many significant positive and negative impacts, but also created a prosperous future for the desolate
and unforgiving western half of the country. The California ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The great numbers of settlers moving west due to gold helped create hundreds of new villages, with
many becoming large metropolitan and economic centers such as San Francisco, Sacramento, San
Jose, and Fresno. The gold quickly turned many of these villages into cities that became extremely
important to the American economy. The discovery of the gold came only nine days before the Treaty
of Guadalupe Hidalgo, also making this treaty one of the most economically significant treaties in
American history. In addition, the United States Transcontinental Railroad was built largely on gold
money to connect the barren west to the rest of the country, and it ran through Sacramento and San
Francisco as soon as 1863. Now, travel that used to take months to complete could be done in days,
only further stimulating the growing American economy during the industrial revolution. American
production and manufacturing in many different aspects skyrocketed and helped meet the rising
necessary national supply and demand. The quick settlement of the west also reinforced the idea of
Manifest Destiny and made beneficial use of the territory that the United States acquired in the
Mexican American war. In addition to domestic improvements, the gold rush also benefited the
economy on a global stage, as fast growing cities in the west created new markets for food, goods, and
other materials. The west would receive imports from South America, Britain, China, and many more
nations in exchange for their precious gold. The California Gold Rush quickly became one of the most
influential economic movements in American history as it further advanced the nation s standing on

current systems and provide a solution that will fix the issues. In order to discover the issues with the
system, the analyst must be able to interact with the business to identify how their current systems
work. This means that a systems analyst must have complete access to their databases as well as being
allowed to interact with employees. The main reason why the systems analyst would need to interact
with the employees is so they are able to find the strengths and weaknesses of the system. This is
useful to them as they will be able to identify what areas of the system need to be changed and what

Impact Of Social Media On The Workplace
Introduction World organizations are opening up to the idea of usage of social media for reaching out
to the employees. Some Organizations CXOs (CXO means the job titles starts with Chief and ends
with Officer includes: CEO, CFO) still hold reservations about usage of social media for hiring and
seem more comfortable with the more traditional methods like job portals, employee referrals, walk
ins etc. However, with increased pressure on CHROs to keep a check on recruitment budgets, they are
exploring more social media options and we will see a greater momentum in this area in World.
Companies continue to use intranet portal for internal branding and do not seem very open to using
publicly available social media websites. One out of every nine people in the world use Facebook,
with an estimated 700 billion minutes being spent every month on this application, it is interesting to
note that over 2.5 million organizations have a Facebook presence in addition to their corporate
websites. An estimated 250 million people access social media sites through their mobile devices. The
impact that social media has on the daily lives of people is beyond like on Facebook or re tweet on
Twitter. Organizations are feeling the need to be present on not just one social media platform,
however, on ensuring that they are available and listening to all at all times. Commenting on the role

Sonnet 116 and Love Is Not All
William Shakespeare s Sonnet 116 and Edna St. Vincent Millay s Love Is Not All both attempt to
define love, by telling what love is and what it is not. Shakespeare s sonnet praises love and speaks of
love in its most ideal form, while Millay s poem begins by giving the impression that the speaker feels
that love is not all, but during the unfolding of the poem we find the ironic truth that love is all.
Shakespeare, on the other hand, depicts love as perfect and necessary from the beginning to the end of
his poem. Although these two authors have taken two completely different approaches, both have
worked to show the importance of love and to define it. However, Shakespeare is most confident of
his definition of love, while Millay seems ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are all things that we must have in order to survive, but even though love can give us none of
these things, Millay then goes on to say that many men are dying because of a lack of love: Yet many
a man is making friends with death / Even as I speak, for lack of love alone (8 9). It important to note
that the buildup of what love cannot do is necessary for the dramatic declaration that we need love
regardless of how useless it may seem. This is a cleaver ploy by Millay because although she has
effectively shown how worthless love is on a physical level, she has also effectively shown how
necessary love is on an emotional level. It is important to note that the first eight lines are a part of a
single sentence. This is important because it means that if we remove the repeated poetic verse found
within these lines, we discover that Millay is simply saying Love is not all... / Yet many a man is
making friends with death / Even as I speak, for lack of love alone (1 8) . This is a justifiable
conclusion because after the words Love is not all the author uses a colon, which means that the lines
following are simply a definition for what she means by Love is not all (1) . When put in such simple
terms, it s easy to see how this is almost indistinguishable from saying, Love is not all, but it would be
better to be dead than not have it.
The second half of the poem is very different from the beginning half because the lines that follow the

Neural Systems Controlling Emotions Have Influence On...
Research Objectives
The research completed by Shiv et al (2004), was to identify whether or not dysfunctions in neural
systems controlling emotions could influence and promote individual s gambling abilities. Emotions
can be either beneficial or detrimental to one s behaviour; it depends on what task is on hand and the
individual differences. As previous research in neuroscience has highlighted the positive roles of
emotions in everyday decision making, Shiv et al (2004) wanted to test out if individuals with
dysfunctional emotional reactions could actually make better decisions than normal individuals. A
specific scenario that brought curiosity to the researchers was how a patient with ventromedial
prefrontal damage, an area responsible for fear, responded accurately to hazardous road conditions.
Instead of becoming fearful and stepping on the breaks during icy roads, this individual lacked fear so
the patient assessed the situation and responded properly. This patient with ventromedial prefrontal
cortex damage handled the hazardous situation logically rather than emotionally, allowed him to react
properly. Shiv et al (2004) are specifically looking at how dysfunctions in neural systems controlling
emotions could affect gambling abilities. As normal individuals usually display a myopic loss
aversion, high levels of risk aversion towards gambling, this study wants to detect if individuals with
injuries with emotional brain circuitry systems would also have myopic loss

Zeno s Arguments Against Achilles
One of Zeno s arguments about motion is called the Achilles. This well known argument is named
after the one whom the argument says cannot possibly overtake the tortoise he is pursuing. This
argument on Achilles helps show us how Zeno proved his point. He took a presupposition and then
proved that it is, in fact, impossible. The argument starts with Achilles and the Tortoise having a race.
And because Achilles is a swift and mighty warrior, and the Tortoise is heavy and slow, the Tortoise is
given a head start of ten meters. However, with this advantage, the Tortoise will always be ahead of
Achilles no matter how quick he catches up with it. In order to understand the way Zeno think, we will
be analyzing this paradox of Achilles and the Tortoise. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zeno put this in the argument so we can easily see the dilemma. If Achilles is faster, that should mean
he would definitely overtake the Tortoise. But Zeno is giving the argument that whenever Achilles
catches up to the animal, it would, at that moment, advances a certain distance. So by giving the
Tortoise a head start, Achilles put himself in a situation where he can never catch up to his opponent.
These lead us to the implicit premises underlying the argument about Achilles and the Tortoise. First,
Achilles always takes some amount of time to cover a certain distance. And though the Tortoise is
slow, it is always moving ahead. Because the animal covers some distance in every interval of time, it
seems impossible to know the time at the end of which Achilles has caught the Tortoise. Therefore, we
can infer from the premises that in each moment that Achilles must be catching up the distance
between them, the Tortoise will be adding a new distance however

Upward Mobility
Melessa Favreault in her report titled discrimination and upward mobility, aims to determine if racism
upsets upward mobility particularly among African Americans. For this report, Melessa defines racism
as less favorable treatment in an important institution, like the education or criminal justice system, or
market, like a labor, financial, or housing market, solely on the basis of an ascribed characteristic, like
age, race, or gender (1). The report exemplified that in fact, among African American families,
downward mobility is more expected than upward mobility, residential segregation is a threat to
upward mobility, and discrimination is present in both labor and housing markets.

A subject that is more thoroughly touched upon in the textbook. According to the textbook,
segregation often leads to social isolation. This occurs because outsiders such as those belonging to
the middle and upper working classes avoid these neighborhoods. This avoidance leaves these
communities virtually cut off from the larger society and lead to a high occurrence of crime and
unemployment (299). Besides these factors, these segregated neighborhoods have poor quality
schools, limited medical care, and high rates of infant mortality, substance abuse, and violent crime
(299). All factors that diminish chances of upward mobility. That is, a lack of education and high
exposure to crime and substance abuse does not provide much in the way of opportunity. The report
states that Social exclusion remains among the largest problems in our wealthy society, and one of the
most troubling with respect to economic mobility (5). This could be due to a lack of acknowledgement
of the problem. The report also states that, there is a disparity by race in perceptions of the prevalence
of discrimination, with whites less likely than blacks to view discrimination as a problem (4). As long
as there is a victim there is a crime, no matter how much its prevalence is denied, institutional racism
continues to promote unequal opportunity among the African American population in America.
Based on the information examined in the report, racism does in fact hinder the upward mobility of
African Americans. Racist practices towards blacks in the capitalist housing market strikingly lessons
prospects of upward mobility by promoting racially segregated neighborhoods that offer less in the
way of social infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals and subject residents to crime and

Moll Flanders And Sexism In Literature
The appearance of women in 18th Century literary works, was on the rise. Women were side
characters early novels and often used by authors as a device to portray virtue and innocence to the
public. To set a standard of what an modest woman of this time period should stand for and how they
should interact with others. Women used as main protagonist faced great challenges and went to great
lengths to protect their virtue from the inappropriate touch of men. These women were wives with
maternal instincts, who wanted nothing more than to marry for love and have rooms filled with
children and expensive dresses only adding to the sexist stigma that oppressed the women of this time
period. Daniel Defoe decided to set himself apart from these clique novels and take on the flipped role
of critiquing this sexism with his novel the fortunes and misfortunes of the famous Moll Flanders. As
one of this period may see his novel as a place of sentiment with quick witted humor and a good
adventure novel, others and literary critics today see it as a critique itself on the sexism of the time
period. This was later confirmed to be the intended purpose in his work essay, his goal was to show
women in a different light, to make them understand the world (p.292). In his fictional tale of the life
of moll flanders, Defoe sheds light on several issues involving the oppression of women which often
went unnoticed by society, Through this novel, defoe weaves in critiques on the strict enforcement of

The Right And Bear Arms Essay
There are and always will be people disagreeing over the controversial Second Amendment, the right
to bear arms, however there are several reasons why the Second Amendment is beneficial to the
community. The Second Amendment to certain people in the United States is seen as an amendment
that represents their freedom. Some of the key reasons that the right to bear arms is beneficial to the
community is that it allows for citizens to hunt and provide for their families, it allows for people to
protect themselves and others, and can keep it so that the government doesn t have uncontrollable
power. The amendment also allows for the people to be able to go and buys guns and ammo. The
amount of benefits to the community that the second amendment gives off is under estimated by
many, due to the news and publicity always being very negative towards guns and their uses. If the
news was to ever show guns in a good light making the public more knowledgeable about the
controversial Amendment the opinions of the people might shift gears a little into becoming more
supporting of the Second Amendment and the benefits that come with it. The Second Amendment that
was ratified 1791 as a part of the first 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights in the United States

Invitation To A Dialogue A Challenge To America
Since the beginning of minimum wage during the Great Depression, the discussion of the how much
minimum wage should be has always been occurring. Currently there is a strong push for the
minimum wage to be raised, especially as Americans compare the current American rate to other
countries rates. The New York Times recently reported that unionized Danish fast food workers are
paid more than twice as much as the average fast food worker in America, and the Danish workers
also receive benefits and paid vacation (Salz par. 2). Salz in his article, Invitation to a Dialogue: A
Challenge to America, begs America to change its minimum wage rate so as to better take care of
Americans. What Salz fails to take into account is the context of the comparison of rates along with
the purpose of minimum wage when it was created, the effects of raising the minimum wage, and
looking at the costs involved. In Salz s article he compares the pay of Danish workers to American
workers. This is two different contexts which must be taken into account. One cannot merely compare
the dollar amount of pay when the cost of living, workers skill level, and taxes must be taken into
consideration. The cost of living is much higher in Europe, for example, than in America. Also, the
Danish workers are unionized compared to non unionized, fast food workers in America, which begs
the question of what are union costs and what is involved with being in a union. In Salz s article, he

Napoleon as the Betrayer to the French Revolution Essay...
Napoleon as the Betrayer to the French Revolution
Napoleon Bonaparte has remained one of history s most furiously debated characters. This is because
there has been much speculation and many differing interpretations of his actions as leader of France
from 1799 1815. Most historians tend to have been torn between the portraits of Napoleon as the heir
of the Revolution or as the destroyer of the Revolution s most sacred principles. However, a third
opinion has emerged that suggests that Napoleon made revolutionary ideas practical and therefore
acted as a bridge between the Ancien Regime and the lofty ideals of the Revolution.

Napoleon realised that religion was of great importance to the people of France. He managed to agree
to a Concordat between France and the Pope that recognised Roman Catholicism as France s principle
religion and sees the Pope as the head of the Roman Catholic Church. However, Napoleon managed to
introduce further terms that effectively made France in charge of religion.
The view that supports Napoleon as the defender of the Revolution is Napoleon himself! Emmanuel
de Las Cases, who accompanied Napoleon into exile on St. Helena, was the author of Napoleon s
main biography, The Legend of Napoleon . In his writings, Napoleon became the founder of the
Revolution and the protagonist of its achievements. He preserved the principles of liberty and equality,
confirmed the destruction of feudalism, united the fractions within France and propagated the
principles of the Revolution abroad. In the 1830s and 1840s, the Napoleonic Legend arose in France.
People in France yearned for the excitement and adventure of Napoleon and his legend provided this.
Napoleon actually himself believed that he was the heir to the Revolution and that he made the
principles work for France.

To understand the reason why United Airlines (UAL) decided to implement SMS, we need to go back
and analyzed its system before it implemented SMS and also after it was implemented. To do so, we
will use critical thinking which is a disciplined process that consists of applying, and evaluating data.
According to the 2014 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) record, before SMS
was instituted at UAL, the recordable injury rate, the lost time injury, and the aircraft damage rate
were very high. But with SMS, everything started going down. For example, in 2014 the recordable
injury rate was down by 4 percent as compared to the previous year, the lost time injury and its
performing decreased by almost 24 percent. Also, the aircraft damage decreased by five percent. As
we all can see, before SMS, United had some serious problem keeping up with safety and aircraft
damages, but after SMS, we have seen some tremendous improvement in the way they managed their
safety. Now, to demonstrate the importance of the application of SMS within UAL, the student will
use quantitative reasoning, information literacy and scientific literacy. Quantitative reasoning is
defined as the ability to use technology, and current techniques to interpret information to solve
related problems.

Madeleine Leininger s Cultural Care Diversity Theory
Nursing theory provides the basis, or framework, of the nursing profession and helps to identify the
unique qualities of the profession. Without theory to explain the focus of the nursing profession, the
profession may lose direction and its understanding of new knowledge to build upon the discipline
(CCN, 2014). Theories must be applied in various settings such as bedside nursing, lead nurse
management, and executive management. One of the issues that our local healthcare system has been
dealing with is an increase in culturally diverse patients. There has been a recent surge in Sudanese
and Hispanic populations seeking healthcare. The direct care staff treating these patients need to have
resources available to provided culturally competent care. This includes things such as translators,
translating devices such as the blue telephone , and culturally appropriate spiritual care.
The theory chosen for analysis in this paper is Madeleine Leininger s Cultural Care Diversity Theory.
Leinenger s theory looks at individual patients with relation to their cultural heritage. The pieces of
her theory include culture, culture care, and culture care similarities and differences pertaining to
transcultural human care (CCN, 2014). This middle range theory has the potential to influence nurses
to provide culturally competent care to patients such as Hispanics. The writer of this paper has
unintentionally used Leinenger s theory in practice while caring for patients. There

Awe. Complete and utter awe. That was the only way I could ever describe the feeling the night sky

never seen anything like this all my life. Taking a few steps back, I seated myself on a stone that stood

intimidating, if not for the pure beauty of the stars that pierced through the dark of night. I slowly
looked down upon the town, away from the harsh contrast of black and white to instead a blur of
color. Children dashed in small circles around their parents, women danced across the square wearing
vibrant dresses, men sat to the side as they drank, made cheerful conversation, and smiled, admiring
the festival around them just as I was from the top of my overlook, hidden by the night. I didn t want
to leave. This was my new favorite location in town. Unfortunately, I didn t want to miss the festival
either. The sounds of the celebration managed to lure me away. Beginning my descent, I could hear
the music grow louder and louder. I slid down the earthen wall I had strolled by most days of my life,
but only climbed for the first time this evening. I considered finding

The Music Of Hip Hop
Hip hop is a very broad subculture due to the fact that it is comprised of so many other subcultures.
The four main factions of Hip hop are MCing(master of ceremonies) better identified today as
rapping, DJing (disk jockey), breakdancing and Graffiti. Break dancing is known as the physical
manifestation of the hip hop style (Rose 47). The Hip hop subculture has a long lineage and the four
main factions where all foraged together in the same place at the same time. Even though the culture
at the time was viewed as deviant hip hop slowly became a very popular subculture in America. Due
to the fact that Hip hop is so popular makes me believe that the breaking subculture has been absorbed
into mainstream culture.
Break dancing was first performed by underprivileged black and Puerto Rican youth in the mid 1970 s
at the height of disco s popularity. The purpose of a disco DJ at the time was to hide or erase the
breaks in between the songs. It was within these breaks that break dancers would come out and
[execute] moves that imitated the rupture in the rhythmic continuity as it was highlighted in the
musical break . Hence the name breakdancers.(Rose 47) The moves that are done in breakdancing
share resemblances to a number of Afro diaspora dances and well as African American dances, Afro
Brazilian martial arts dance Capoeira and even common dances don in the 1920 s. While the dance
moves are deeply rooted in the cultures that created them, they are not just limited to

How Does Sherman Alexie Use Situational Irony
Reporting the effects of irony
According to Buzzfeed s 19 Most Interesting Facts of All Time, 315 entries in Webster s 1996
dictionary were misspelled. This is ironic because dictionaries should have the correct spelling of all
words. Even though Webster s dictionary did not misspell the words on purpose, it is ironic many
authors use irony in their stories to make them more interesting. The author used this idea of life being
ironic in these three short stories: Sherman Alexie s Because My Father Always Said He Was The
Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play The Star Spangled Banner At Woodstock, Flannery O
Conner s A Good Man Is Hard To Find, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez s A Very Old Man With
Enormous Wings: A Tale For Children. Even though all three short stories are written by different
authors, all three authors use situational irony to make the stories more interesting.
In the story Because My Father Always Said He Was The Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play
The Star Spangled Banner At Woodstock . by Sherman Alexie the author uses situational irony to
make this story more interesting. A fellow demonstrator holds a sign that is just barely visible over my
father s left shoulder. It reads MAKE LOVE NOT WAR. (Alexie 25) This is ironic because they are
being forced to go into war and fight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings: A Tale For Children by Gabriel Garcia Marquez There were
only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth, and hid the pitiful
condition of a drenched great grandfather took away and sense of grandeur he might have had.
(Marquez 1) Besides, the few miracles attributed to the angel showed a certain mental disorder, like
the blind man who didn t recover his sight, but grew three new teeth, or the paralytic who didn t get to
walk but almost won the lottery, and the leper whose sores spouted sunflowers. (Marquez

Air Pressure On Aluminum Lab Report
In lab, to observe the effect of air pressure on an aluminum can, an experiment was conducted. To
conduct this lab, my lab partner and I, began by rinsing an aluminum pop can and placing
approximately 10 mL of water into the can. Next, we place the can on a wire screen supported by a
ring stand, and heated the can with a bunsen burner. Afterwards, we filled a plastic bucket half full of
cool water and observed the can until steam was visible. Finally, we picked up the can using tongs and
turned the can over, placing the opening of the can under water in the bucket to observe the effect of
air pressure on the can. When this lab was conducted, some of the water placed in the aluminum can
vaporized and turn into water vapor, causing some air in

Food Safety Is Extremely Severe Worldwide
Food Safety in China
Food safety tends to be a hot topic in Food safety these years. Though the meaning is similar, different
from food security, food safety concentrates more on health aspects rather than sufficiency. So what is
food safety? Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling, preparation, and storage of food
in ways that prevent foodborne illness. (AmercianPeanutCouncil, 2014) This prevents civils from
severe health hazards and in this way is the food safety similar to the definition of food defense.
I collected data from different websites and summarized them in a chart. Here is the performance of
countries based on their 2015 food safety score. (Charlebois, 2014) Based on this chart, China ranks
42 in the whole world. It s clear that the situation of China s food safety is extremely severe
worldwide. The cause of the food safety problem is intricate; however, before I explain the complex
cause of food safety in China, I d like to illustrate the phenomenon of China s food safety problem
which will definitely promote the comprehensibility of the causes of food safety problems.
People from different fields hold different views upon food safety phenomenon. One of the directors
of Asia Institute Yan stated that Food safety problems constituted a new, urgent, and multifaceted
challenge to Chinese people, society, and the state, involving a number of social, political, and Beck s
theory of risk society. (2012) Food safety problems affect Chinese

Ida B. Wells Barnett
During the American Progressive Era, generally regarded as the late 1800s and early 1900s, many
ideals were changing among the American people. During this period, which closely followed the end
of the civil war, there was an especially great amount of change in what was considered an appropriate
way of conducting oneself, especially if one happened to be a black woman. Ida B. Wells Barnett, an
African American activist who was particularly outspoken on the inhumanity and barbarism of public
lynching, can be used as an excellent primary source exemplifying how black women in the
progressive era felt that they were expected to be presented. As well as identifying the roles and
visions of women in this period, Ida B. Wells Barnett is an example of a women who broke many
barriers, exceeding the limitations put on her by the social constructs of her race and gender.
During this period in American history there were strong views held by the majority of society about
how black women were supposed to conduct themselves. There was a strong patriarchal dominance
over black women, with the subordinance of women being greatly influenced by the remnants of
slavery. Since men were so fiercely controlled during slavery, often not allowed much contact with
their families, and very strict regulations surrounding their sexual relationships with their wives, much
of the masculinity of the men seemed to be stripped away by their masters. After being freed, many
black men felt the need to

  • 2. The Beat Generation By Allen Ginsberg The Beat generation The Beat Generation, a generation that was sick of its mainstream culture and decided to break down the walls for individuality of thought, fashion, personal achievement, and poetry. At the end of World War two, young adults in particularly the east and west coasts of America where left in questioning thought about their own government as if it was really trying to do what s best for their people. And in those upset minds a Beat Generation was born. A generation of tired young poets eager to open the minds of others through their own thoughts and views. The most influential figures during the Beat Generation where Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs. And although their bold, expressive poetry led to great fame, this generation of poets gained a new fan base of critics who thought their work was just a way to seek attention and was not seen as serious art. Allen Ginsberg, born 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, unknowingly found himself creating a new generation of people when he was attending Columbia University and met Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs. There they exchanged and shared common interests and later would become prominent figures in the Beat Movement. Allen Ginsberg s rise of fame didn t become apparent until his book Howl and other poems came to the public eye. But what stood out most for Allen was his poem Howl , written in 1955, which was written particularly outraged toward the way he saw a failing society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Theory Of Classical Conditioning Classical conditioning is based on an association between two stimuli and implies that we as organisms are rather passive in the learning process. Operant conditioning is based on a response and stimuli (i.e., consequences) that follow that response. Operant implies that organisms operate on the environment to produce consequences we anticipate based on previous active learning. Classical conditioning, the association between two stimuli is easily demonstrated in the media. For example, advertising professionals know that they have to pair their products with something that will trigger something in the audience. By pairing their products with something that makes people either happy, excited, or even hungry. They know that people will want to purchase their products. Coca Cola has been pairing their products with Christmas for years. Christmas naturally makes most people happy and excited for the holiday season. During the Coca Cola Christmas commercial for 2010, it starts with Santa running through a parking lot. As it continues hundreds of red semi trucks covered in white lights appear. Through the trees you catch a glimpse of the Coca Cola label and Santa sitting in a chair drinking a coke. While Christmas music plays children run to line the road to watch the trucks pass. As the commercial continues the music gets louder and more lights start to light up with trees. The commercial then flashes to a father reading a Christmas story to his son while sharing ... It feels like homework, typing and staring at the stupid phone or computer. (Lockhart 81) This is significant because Mirren is no longer able to respond. Cadence misses her so much; she wants to believe that Mirren is still alive and well. However, everone misses the liars and wishes that they would have spent more time with them. The Sinclair family misses the liars that died but no really spent time with Johnny, Mirren, and Gat except for Cadence. The four Liars mainly spent time with each other. • 6. Argumentative Essay On Winston Churchill He is thought to be one of the most controversial personalities of world s history. Often referred to as the British Bulldog , he has been voted as the greatest Briton of all times . Some people concern him as defender of democracy and an incredible orator, while others criticize him strongly for his actions during his being in power. We obviously refer to Winston Churchill, a man who left a complicated legacy behind him and whose personality and choices influenced and still do not only British politics, but the whole world s ones. To begin with, Churchill was politically active from an early age. Twice named Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, he is best known for his participation and his crucial role during World War II. With his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By many he is concerned as an imperialist, a belligerent leader. He planned to conquest more countries and expend the British Empire, because he insisted that the Aryan stock is bound to triumph . Therefore, it is very likely that his participation in the war was the part of a wider plan and a deeper motive. He did not just aim to defend his country from a rival. He fought for a raw white supremacism , as expressed by Richard Toye in his book Churchill s Empire (2010). It is true that the British leader believed in the superiority of the white race, which explains why his policies reflect racism as well as fascism. A pretty good example that justifies this opinion is his attitude towards the starving Indians in 1943. The famine in Bengal broke out because of his decision to divert food supplies from India to the front lines in Europe during the war and, as a result, millions of Indians starved to death. Nevertheless, Churchill was indifferent and insisted that it was their own fault for breeding like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Beneficial and Detrimental Effects of Phonology Essay For years, phonology has been incorporated into language education. Young children are introduced to phonics as educators take them through visual flash cards, teaching them the sounds of the alphabet. Children learn to connect sounds into words, using what they learned from the alphabet to apply a system of sounds into a word. Controversy regarding this reading education method has additionally been popular. Although researchers have found negative effects in learning to read phonologically, teachers can still strategically incorporate it into the classroom as long as they are aware of its potential negative effects. According to Bentin S. (1991), phonological awareness is the ability to recognize the internal phonetic structure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is partially because the English language is sometimes difficult to phonetically learn since some rules do not apply and it becomes confusing for the learner and difficult for the educator. Although semantics appear to be a beneficial method, there are many scholars who argue otherwise. Dewhurst, S. and Robinson, C. (2004) discuss some of the negative effects among children whose education focuses more on semantics than phonetics. The study was conducted on 5,8, and 11 year old children and children from each age group falsely recalled nonpresented items related to the study lists (782). Although the study varied depending on the age group, it was clear that the focus of semantics has caused children to have memory illusions as they read (782). Many scholars argue that phonetics is the most effective way to teach reading skills because it makes the individual a better reader in the long run. Once a child can phonetically read, they have the capability to pick any book up and sound out its contents. Children who learn semantically are unable to do this because they learn to memorize certain words as they go. A positive element to learning semantically, however, is the child s ability to read quickly. Once a child has established a memorization and recognition to words, they are able to read very quickly. Children who learn phonetically are often slower since they are sometimes required to stop and sound it out . However ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, as the transport and communication technologies advanced, Japanese culture outspread giving the start to Japonisme (French term). So, the aim of this paper is to reveal the impact of Japonisme on the European art, more precisely, to answer the question: „How did Japanese art influence Western designers in the 19 th Century? quot;. Two basic sources of influence: normative social influence, the need to be liked, accepted by others and Informational influence: need to be correct and to behave in accordance with reality. Solomon Asch (1956) devised an experiment to see if subjects would conform even if they were uncertain that the group norm was incorrect. In his study he asked subjects to take part in an experiment. They were each asked to match a standard length line with three other lines. He found that one of the situational factors of conformity is the size of the opposing majority. As long as a minority stick by four basic rules then they stand a good chance of succeeding in their campaign. They need to be Consistent in their views, Flexible not too rigid in their views, Committed to the cause until it s heard and Relevant, they have more chance of being influential if their views are in line with social trends. Another experiment that psychologists use in respect of conformity and obedience is an experiment that was carried out by a psychologist named Stanley Milgram. He recruited 40 male participants by advertising for volunteers to take part in a study to see how punishment affects learning. The study was to take place at Yale University and everyone would be paid the same rate of $4.50 and they were informed that they would still get paid if they quit during the study. So he hired Miller to pictorially record the journey. Hence, Miller became the first artist to cross the continental divide at south past and thus, the first artist to portray the Rocky Mountains in great detail. Stewart and Miller started out their journey from St. Louis and went across the plains of Nebraska along the Platt River. [1] Stewart had hired Miller to paint pictures of their daily lives. They were travelling 20 30 miles a day on their saddle so it was impossible for Miller to draw while travelling. So, instead Miller began to sketch images with either pen or pencil during the noon hours when they would have their large meal, as it required the least amount of time to dry before they started heading towards their next stop. However, one of the most often overlooked yet incredibly significant events in American history was the California Gold Rush of 1849. The great numbers of settlers moving west due to gold helped create hundreds of new villages, with many becoming large metropolitan and economic centers such as San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, and Fresno. The gold quickly turned many of these villages into cities that became extremely important to the American economy. The discovery of the gold came only nine days before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, also making this treaty one of the most economically significant treaties in American history. In addition, the United States Transcontinental Railroad was built largely on gold money to connect the barren west to the rest of the country, and it ran through Sacramento and San Francisco as soon as 1863. Now, travel that used to take months to complete could be done in days, only further stimulating the growing American economy during the industrial revolution. American production and manufacturing in many different aspects skyrocketed and helped meet the rising necessary national supply and demand. The quick settlement of the west also reinforced the idea of Manifest Destiny and made beneficial use of the territory that the United States acquired in the Mexican American war. Iain s Co. feel that they need a centralised IT support system that will monitor, track and report problems that have been identified by their IT users across both sites. Iain s Co. have hired me as their Systems Analyst to provide them better solutions to manage their IT Supports system. What is systems analysis and how are systems analysed? Systems analysis is when business hire individuals to analyse their systems to determine what issues are present with their current systems and provide a solution that will fix the issues. In order to discover the issues with the system, the analyst must be able to interact with the business to identify how their current systems work. This means that a systems analyst must have complete access to their databases as well as being allowed to interact with employees. The main reason why the systems analyst would need to interact with the employees is so they are able to find the strengths and weaknesses of the system. Shakespeare s sonnet praises love and speaks of love in its most ideal form, while Millay s poem begins by giving the impression that the speaker feels that love is not all, but during the unfolding of the poem we find the ironic truth that love is all. Shakespeare, on the other hand, depicts love as perfect and necessary from the beginning to the end of his poem. It important to note that the buildup of what love cannot do is necessary for the dramatic declaration that we need love regardless of how useless it may seem. This is a cleaver ploy by Millay because although she has effectively shown how worthless love is on a physical level, she has also effectively shown how necessary love is on an emotional level. It is important to note that the first eight lines are a part of a single sentence. This is important because it means that if we remove the repeated poetic verse found within these lines, we discover that Millay is simply saying Love is not all... / Yet many a man is making friends with death / Even as I speak, for lack of love alone (1 8) . This is a justifiable conclusion because after the words Love is not all the author uses a colon, which means that the lines following are simply a definition for what she means by Love is not all (1) . Research Objectives The research completed by Shiv et al (2004), was to identify whether or not dysfunctions in neural systems controlling emotions could influence and promote individual s gambling abilities. Emotions can be either beneficial or detrimental to one s behaviour; it depends on what task is on hand and the individual differences. As previous research in neuroscience has highlighted the positive roles of emotions in everyday decision making, Shiv et al (2004) wanted to test out if individuals with dysfunctional emotional reactions could actually make better decisions than normal individuals. A specific scenario that brought curiosity to the researchers was how a patient with ventromedial prefrontal damage, an area responsible for fear, responded accurately to hazardous road conditions. Instead of becoming fearful and stepping on the breaks during icy roads, this individual lacked fear so the patient assessed the situation and responded properly. This patient with ventromedial prefrontal cortex damage handled the hazardous situation logically rather than emotionally, allowed him to react properly. This well known argument is named after the one whom the argument says cannot possibly overtake the tortoise he is pursuing. This argument on Achilles helps show us how Zeno proved his point. And because Achilles is a swift and mighty warrior, and the Tortoise is heavy and slow, the Tortoise is given a head start of ten meters. However, with this advantage, the Tortoise will always be ahead of Achilles no matter how quick he catches up with it. But Zeno is giving the argument that whenever Achilles catches up to the animal, it would, at that moment, advances a certain distance. So by giving the Tortoise a head start, Achilles put himself in a situation where he can never catch up to his opponent. These lead us to the implicit premises underlying the argument about Achilles and the Tortoise. First, Achilles always takes some amount of time to cover a certain distance. And though the Tortoise is slow, it is always moving ahead. Because the animal covers some distance in every interval of time, it seems impossible to know the time at the end of which Achilles has caught the Tortoise. • 30. Upward Mobility Melessa Favreault in her report titled discrimination and upward mobility, aims to determine if racism upsets upward mobility particularly among African Americans. For this report, Melessa defines racism as less favorable treatment in an important institution, like the education or criminal justice system, or market, like a labor, financial, or housing market, solely on the basis of an ascribed characteristic, like age, race, or gender (1). The report exemplified that in fact, among African American families, downward mobility is more expected than upward mobility, residential segregation is a threat to upward mobility, and discrimination is present in both labor and housing markets. According to the textbook, segregation often leads to social isolation. This occurs because outsiders such as those belonging to the middle and upper working classes avoid these neighborhoods. This avoidance leaves these communities virtually cut off from the larger society and lead to a high occurrence of crime and unemployment (299). Besides these factors, these segregated neighborhoods have poor quality schools, limited medical care, and high rates of infant mortality, substance abuse, and violent crime (299). All factors that diminish chances of upward mobility. That is, a lack of education and high exposure to crime and substance abuse does not provide much in the way of opportunity. The report states that Social exclusion remains among the largest problems in our wealthy society, and one of the most troubling with respect to economic mobility (5). This could be due to a lack of acknowledgement of the problem. The report also states that, there is a disparity by race in perceptions of the prevalence of discrimination, with whites less likely than blacks to view discrimination as a problem (4). As long as there is a victim there is a crime, no matter how much its prevalence is denied, institutional racism continues to promote unequal opportunity among the African American population in America. Based on the information examined in the report, racism does in fact hinder the upward mobility of African Americans. Racist practices towards blacks in the capitalist housing market strikingly lessons prospects of upward mobility by promoting racially segregated neighborhoods that offer less in the way of social infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals and subject residents to crime and ... • 32. Moll Flanders And Sexism In Literature The appearance of women in 18th Century literary works, was on the rise. Women were side characters early novels and often used by authors as a device to portray virtue and innocence to the public. To set a standard of what an modest woman of this time period should stand for and how they should interact with others. Women used as main protagonist faced great challenges and went to great lengths to protect their virtue from the inappropriate touch of men. These women were wives with maternal instincts, who wanted nothing more than to marry for love and have rooms filled with children and expensive dresses only adding to the sexist stigma that oppressed the women of this time period. Daniel Defoe decided to set himself apart from these clique novels and take on the flipped role of critiquing this sexism with his novel the fortunes and misfortunes of the famous Moll Flanders. As one of this period may see his novel as a place of sentiment with quick witted humor and a good adventure novel, others and literary critics today see it as a critique itself on the sexism of the time period. This was later confirmed to be the intended purpose in his work essay, his goal was to show women in a different light, to make them understand the world (p.292). In his fictional tale of the life of moll flanders, Defoe sheds light on several issues involving the oppression of women which often went unnoticed by society, Through this novel, defoe weaves in critiques on the strict enforcement of ... The Right And Bear Arms Essay There are and always will be people disagreeing over the controversial Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, however there are several reasons why the Second Amendment is beneficial to the community. The Second Amendment to certain people in the United States is seen as an amendment that represents their freedom. Some of the key reasons that the right to bear arms is beneficial to the community is that it allows for citizens to hunt and provide for their families, it allows for people to protect themselves and others, and can keep it so that the government doesn t have uncontrollable power. The amendment also allows for the people to be able to go and buys guns and ammo. The amount of benefits to the community that the second amendment gives off is under estimated by many, due to the news and publicity always being very negative towards guns and their uses. If the news was to ever show guns in a good light making the public more knowledgeable about the controversial Amendment the opinions of the people might shift gears a little into becoming more supporting of the Second Amendment and the benefits that come with it. Invitation To A Dialogue A Challenge To America Since the beginning of minimum wage during the Great Depression, the discussion of the how much minimum wage should be has always been occurring. Currently there is a strong push for the minimum wage to be raised, especially as Americans compare the current American rate to other countries rates. The New York Times recently reported that unionized Danish fast food workers are paid more than twice as much as the average fast food worker in America, and the Danish workers also receive benefits and paid vacation (Salz par. 2). Salz in his article, Invitation to a Dialogue: A Challenge to America, begs America to change its minimum wage rate so as to better take care of Americans. What Salz fails to take into account is the context of the comparison of rates along with the purpose of minimum wage when it was created, the effects of raising the minimum wage, and looking at the costs involved. In Salz s article he compares the pay of Danish workers to American workers. This is two different contexts which must be taken into account. One cannot merely compare the dollar amount of pay when the cost of living, workers skill level, and taxes must be taken into consideration. The cost of living is much higher in Europe, for example, than in America. Also, the Danish workers are unionized compared to non unionized, fast food workers in America, which begs the question of what are union costs and what is involved with being in a union. Emmanuel de Las Cases, who accompanied Napoleon into exile on St. Helena, was the author of Napoleon s main biography, The Legend of Napoleon . In his writings, Napoleon became the founder of the Revolution and the protagonist of its achievements. He preserved the principles of liberty and equality, confirmed the destruction of feudalism, united the fractions within France and propagated the principles of the Revolution abroad. To understand the reason why United Airlines (UAL) decided to implement SMS, we need to go back and analyzed its system before it implemented SMS and also after it was implemented. To do so, we will use critical thinking which is a disciplined process that consists of applying, and evaluating data. According to the 2014 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) record, before SMS was instituted at UAL, the recordable injury rate, the lost time injury, and the aircraft damage rate were very high. But with SMS, everything started going down. For example, in 2014 the recordable injury rate was down by 4 percent as compared to the previous year, the lost time injury and its performing decreased by almost 24 percent. Also, the aircraft damage decreased by five percent. As we all can see, before SMS, United had some serious problem keeping up with safety and aircraft damages, but after SMS, we have seen some tremendous improvement in the way they managed their safety. Ida B. Wells Barnett, an African American activist who was particularly outspoken on the inhumanity and barbarism of public lynching, can be used as an excellent primary source exemplifying how black women in the progressive era felt that they were expected to be presented.
