The document discusses the anatomy and functions of the skin. It describes the two main layers of the skin - the dermis and epidermis. The epidermis forms a protective barrier and regulates heat and moisture. The skin has several functions including sensation, heat regulation, absorption, protection, excretion, and secretion. A spray tan works by applying dihydroxyacetone to the skin's surface, which reacts with amino acids to cause browning. The color develops over 4 hours and fades as the top layer of skin is shed.

Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for new cells every thirty days. However, sometimes, dead skin doesn’t rid entirely, and exfoliation can help.
Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin using a chemical, granular substance, or an exfoliation tool.
The tricky thing about exfoliation is it can either work wonders for your skin, or it can destroy your skin barrier. While some people believe that exfoliation improves the appearance of your skin, it is not for everyone. If not done correctly, it could do more harm than good.
There are two main methods for at-home exfoliation, mechanical and chemical. Mechanical exfoliation uses a brush or sponge tool, or scrub that physically removes dead skin cells. Whereas chemical exfoliation uses chemicals such as alpha and beta hydroxy acids to gently dissolves dead skin cells.
If you choose to exfoliate, here are dermatologist-recommended tips to prevent further damage to your skin:

STRETCH MARKS: WHY THEY APPEAR AND HOW TO GET RID OF THEMAbdeslamAnssar
What exactly is a stretch mark?
Stretchmarks on woman's belly
Stretch marks fade with time; however, treatment may make them less noticeable more quickly.
A stretch mark is a type of scar that develops when our skin stretches or shrinks quickly. The abrupt change causes the collagen and elastin, which support our skin, to rupture. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear.
Not everyone develops these narrow bands on their skin. Fluctuating hormone levels seem to play a role. You may also have a higher risk if people in your family get stretch marks.
If you develop stretch marks, you’re most likely to do so during these times:
Growth spurts that happen in puberty
Pregnancy
Rapid weight loss or gain
Weight training when you have rapid muscle growth
Applying a corticosteroid to your skin for a long time can also cause stretch marks. If you have Cushing’s disease or Marfan syndrome, you may see stretch marks.
When stretch marks first appear, they tend to be red, purple, pink, reddish-brown, or dark brown, depending on your skin color. Early stretch marks may feel slightly raised and can be itchy.
In time, the color fades and the narrow bands sink beneath your skin. If you run your finger over a mature stretch mark, you often feel a slight depression.
Unlike any other skin care product on the market, this is topical skin nutrition that nourishes your skin. No dangerous hidden chemicals or toxins.

Along with acne and skin aging, enlarged pores are also one skin problem that tops the list. While they are entirely a cosmetic problem, some people find it annoying, and others think they would look better if they had smaller pores.
Pores are tiny openings in the skin that releases oils and sweat. They are also connected to your hair follicles. If your pores appear more prominent, it may be because of acne, increased sebum production, sun damage, and non-comedogenic makeup.
Although you can’t change the size of your pores, here are some ways to help minimize their appearance:

Make sure there is always enough tan in the cup; keep the cup perpendicular to the body, but always in the upright position.
The therapist must be accurate with coverage, so develop a routine and stick with it.
Apply the tan in the correct sequence and according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Remember to start the airbrush away from the body.
Keep the gun moving around, at a good distance away from the body too close and the tan will run too far away and it will not reach the skin.
If the action is too slow dripping will occur, too fast and the skin will not be covered.
Use a side to side action in smooth even stokes across the body.

3. Layers of the
skin
The skin is made up of two main layers; the
dermis and the epidermis. The epidermis is
the layer which is acted upon by a spray tan.
The other function of the epidermis is to form a
protective barrier against pathogens and to
regulate heat and moisture levels.
12. Functions of the
skin (SHAPES)
Heat regulation
Sweating – evaporation aids heat loss.
By shivering – closing pores to prevent
heat loss.
Goosebumps-Hairs stand on end to trap
heat.
13. Functions of the
skin (SHAPES)
Absorption
The skin produces vitaminD by absorbing
sunlight.
Medication and creams may be
administered by absorption, e.g. hormone
patches and creams

Acid Mantle – protects against bacteria
18. The 1920s heralded a huge change in
perception.
Celebrity fashion icon, Coco Chanel, caught a
tan whilst holidaying on her yacht in the French
Riviera; suddenly everyone wanted to follow
suit and the craze for tanning began.
19. As time went by, it was shown that prolonged
and repeated exposure to sunshine led to a
marked increase in skin damage. Keen to
avoid skin cancer and wrinkles, the public
began to look for other methods of achieving a
bronzed skin and this led to the development
of fake tan.

Initially, fake tan came in the form of a cream
but this proved difficult to apply without
streaking and so better application methods
were sought. To date, the most popular of
these is the therapist-applied spray tan.
21. The Benefits
of spray
tanning
To the client, the benefit of a spray tan is that it is streak-free, it is even and it looks natural.
To the therapist, one key benefit of becoming a Spraytanpro is the increased speed in which
the treatment can be completed.
The improved efficiency leads to much higher revenue.
22. Another bonus is its compactness; since only a
relatively small area is needed to complete the
treatment, rent and rates can be kept to a
minimum.

Using a spray, the therapist can also avoid the
dreaded ‘brown hand syndrome’ and –
perhaps most importantly - the flawless finish
ensures a happy customer and many years of
repeat custom.
25. How does fake
tan work?
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the active ingredient in a fake tan. It comes from a vegetable
source and reacts with the amino acids in the skin, causing the skin to turn brown.

This is the colour which is visible immediately after a tan has been applied. It is important to
advise the client that this will wash off as soon as it comes into contact with water, for example
in the shower, as unless they are aware of this they might mistakenly think that their tan has not
‘taken’ and is washing off..
28. Erythrulose is sometimes added to enhance
the tan’s final colour. It gives a much more
natural, long lasting colour so despite it adding
to the cost of the product, do make sure that the
tan you use contains this as the improved result
more than repays the investment.
