Standards : Understanding the properties in physical and chemical changes.
Objective : Students will compare the physical and chemical properties of substances.
Opening : Apperception
What is the properties from water and gasoline? (answer: have same phase, that is liquid)
What happen if both of liquid we give the fire? (answer : water will not burn but gasoline catch
fire and burn)
Teach :
Properties of an object are the qualities that make it different from others, such as hardiness,
density, color, shape, size, melting point, and boiling point, taste, aroma. You may describe a matter
by telling its physical properties. The properties of an object which can be observed, sensed, and
heard usually relate to physical properties of the object. The chemical properties of a substance
indicate whether the substance can change its characteristic, such as, flammable, decomposable,
corrosive, explosive. Properties of an object (substance) relating to the formation of a new
substance.
Example
When perfume has sprayed, what do you feel? (answer: we can feel the aroma from
perfume)(physical properties)
If we drink fermented milk, there are a physical properties as well as chemical properties. Can you
distinguish it?
Answer
Physical properties : when we drink it, the taste is sour (taste)
Chemical properties : fermented lactose from milk produced lactic acid bacteria (decomposed)
Guided Practice :
    1. When we put margarine in to refrigerator will be solid. However, when heated, margarine
will melt. This shows the physical properties of the form… (phase)
    2. The fence from iron if left in the open then over time the fence will rust. The process that
occurs in the fence is a process ...and this shows the ……properties (corrosive and chemical)
    3. Sodium metal is always stored under kerosene. This is because sodium metal will cause an
explosion if it reacts with water but did not cause an explosion if stored under kerosene.
Properties shown by sodium metal reacts with water to indicate the properties … (explosive)
