1) Cultivating strong people skills is vital for effective leadership as people are a leader's most important asset.
2) Leaders must see people as individuals to be loved rather than avoided or exploited and should take on roles like a host, doctor, counselor or tour guide to help people based on their needs.
3) Developing an understanding of human psychology and applying principles like encouraging security, honoring individuals, providing hope and direction, and addressing needs can help a leader strengthen relationships and motivate followers.

Most people believe personality traits are fixed characteristics that are present at birth and persist throughout an individual’s lifetime. Recent research, however, indicates these “fixed” traits are simply the symptoms of a person’s belief system. These beliefs can be so strong, in fact, that they positively or negatively influence every aspect of an individual’s life: sports, business, relationships, parenting, teaching, and coaching.
According to Carol S. Dweck, one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation, there are two main belief systems, or mindsets, that people can possess. These mindsets strongly influence the way individuals respond to success and failure, and in Mindset, Dweck uses research, examples of well-known business and sports leaders, and specific scenarios to demonstrate how changing one’s mindset can profoundly affect the outcome of almost every situation. Dweck also explains how understanding the basics of mindsets can help in accepting and understanding relationships and the people who comprise them

Nonprofit organizations operate under many different missions but our sector shares a common goal of building healthier, happier, more just communities. The challenges to meeting this shared goal are becoming more and more complex but the nonprofit sector is rising to meet the challenge in a number of ways. Most promising is the sector’s growing acknowledgment that nothing is more critical to reaching our shared goal than attracting and developing diverse talent. During this session we will present YNPN’s time-tested framework for cultivating leadership – particularly next generation leadership – within organizations and across the sector.

Leaving a Legacy
The Phair Message July 22- July 28th, 2014.Joshua Phair
“This week has come with many important realizations. Chief among them is this, learn to say “No.” I have often found that “maybe” is one of the most damaging words, laying hope where there was never any to be had. If we truly love those around us and wish to give of ourselves in service, it will do much to maintain the relationship if we are up front in letting our loved ones know when it is impossible for us to extend our hand. Many are so afraid of hurting their friends that it is difficult for them to deny assistance. When I have had the opportunity to be in need I have always respected those who immediately made it known that they were in no position to help. Likewise, I make it a habit to do the same for any who come to me. If I can serve, I will. If I can find someone else who can serve, in the case that I cannot, I will. If I cannot serve you for some reason and I cannot find anyone else who can, I will let you know promptly so you can seek resolution elsewhere.
For, as often, the closing of one door is what allows us to see the door that has just opened before us. And were it not for that closure, we would never have seen the other opportunity near us.”
As a reader I wanted you to relate yourself to the situations you had faced and try to apply the methods/ techniques which are being shared. Don’t think of this book as another “Super Hero Movie”, give the due credit to it by believing and taking bay steps which would draw you closure to your intended path.

Read the "Early Chinese Sources" on blackboard (see below). These are selections from four early Chinese authors, all of whom write about human nature, what values are most important to a society, and what relationship these values have to good government. Do these authors primarily agree or disagree? Why or why not? From your perspective, which of these points-of-view are best for effective government? Please take a clear position, using specific examples to support your answer. Consider this question in a 1.5 - 2 page essay, 12 point font. Due 2/14
Your papers will be graded on the following criteria:
30% Thesis- A thesis must be clear, stating your position and what you will be arguing. The thesis must come at the beginning of the essay so that your reader knows what to expect.

You can either quote or paraphrase from the text, but if the latter, you must be specific enough that I know exactly which part of the text you are referring to. Your examples must also be relevant, with a clear connection to your thesis and analysis.
30% Analysis- You must have a clear thesis and support that with evidence from the text, but you must also tell me WHY and / or HOW the evidence helps demonstrate your point.
10% Organization- Is your essay divided into paragraphs with proper punctuation.

Introduction
Confucius (the Latinized version of Kong Fuzi, “master Kong”) or, to call him by his proper
name, Kong Qiu (551-479 BCE) lived during the time when the Zhou kingdom had disintegrated
into many de facto independent feudal states which were subject to the Zhou kings only in
theory. Confucius was a man of the small feudal state of Lu. Like many other men of the
educated elite class of the Eastern Zhou, Confucius traveled among the states, offering his
services as a political advisor and official to feudal rulers and taking on students whom he would
teach for a fee. Confucius had an unsuccessful career as a petty bureaucrat, but a highly
successful one as a teacher. A couple of generations after his death, first- and second-generation
students gathered accounts of Confucius’ teachings together. These anecdotes and records of
short conversations go under the English title of the Analects.
Selections from the Confucian Analects
1:1 The Master said, “To learn, and at due times to practice what one has learned, is
that not also a pleasure? To have friends come from afar, is that not also a joy? To go
unrecognized, yet without being embittered, is that not also to be a noble person?”
1:2 Master You [You Ruo] said, “Among those who are filial toward their parents
and fraternal toward their brothers, those who are inclined to offend against their superiors are
few indeed. Among those who are disinclined to offend against their superiors, there have
never been any who are yet inclined to cr.

Lesson 5 cultivating people skills
1. Cultivating People Skills in Your Leadership (The Vital Role of Relationship in Leadership) – Lesson 5
2. John 13:15 “For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
3. FOUR TRUTHS ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND PEOPLE People are most appreciable asset. A leader’s most important asset is people skills. A good leader can lead various groups because leadership is about people. You can have people skills and not be a good leader, but you cannot be a good leader without people skills.
4. LUKE 10:30-37 Jesus told this story in response to a man who asked, “Who is my neighbor?” He spoke of a man who was robbed and beaten alongside a road, and left for dead. Soon, a couple of religious leaders walked by, but never stopped. It is likely they were on their way to some religious activity. Then, a Samaritan came by, and helped the man, caring for him until he was well again. Jesus then asked: Who was the neighbor in this story?
5. THE WAY YOU SEE YOURSELF IS THE WAY YOU SERVE YOUR PEOPLE
6. The story of the “Good Samaritan” illustrates how we treat others based upon how we see ourselves. Notice the different way the victimized man was treated in this story . . .
12. A Definition for Spiritual Leadership… ONE WHO HAS ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF HIS RELATIONSHIPS.
13. Many leaders make the mistake of separating leadership from relationships. This happens when a person steps into a position of leadership and assumes that everyone will follow them because of their position.
15. Picture 1 1. THE ANALOGY OF THE HOST. (Good hosts take initiative and make others feel comfortable.) As a leader, you must “host” the relationships and conversations of your life. Leaders are not guests in relationships. Knowing what a good host does in his home, we ought to be able to do it with people everywhere.
16. Picture 2 2. THE ANALOGY OF THE DOCTOR. (Good doctors ask questions. They probe until they see the need.) As you attempt to discern people’s needs, ask questions, until you discern their condition. Only then you try to address their needs. Don’t give a prescription before a diagnosis
17. Picture 3 3. THE ANALOGY OF THE COUNSELOR. (Good counselors are active listeners and interpret what they hear.) As a leader with solid people skills, you must become an active listener. You should non – verbally communicate you understand the person, identify with them. We earn our right to speak by listening.
18. Picture 4 4. THE ANALOGY OF THE TOUR GUIDE. (Guides don’t merely fellowship with others, but get them to the destination.) A leader’s people skills must result in his ability to take people to a destination. Our purpose is not to be liked people, but to take them in a journey and to reach goal they might not have reached alone.
19. A leader should take the appropriate role according to the needs of the person they are leading. Our job is to “connect” with people, so that we can take them on the journey.
21. 1. PEOPLE ARE INSECURE. GIVE THEM CONFIDENCE. Key Principle: Hurting people hurt people. Secure people offer security to people. Most people are insecure, in some area of their life. Most insecure people are looking for security. A secure environment is provided only by secure and confident people.
22. (Hebrews 10:25) “Think of ways to encourage one another, do outburst of love and good ideas.”
23. 2. PEOPLE LIKE TO FEEL SPECIAL . HONOR THEM. Key Principle: To deal with yourself, use your head. To deal with others, use your heart When You Affirm and Honor Someone with Your Words . . . MAKE THEM SINCERE. Be genuine about what you say. MAKE THEM SPECIFIC. Be pointed and specific about what you say. MAKE THEM PUBLIC. Share the honoring word in front of others. MAKE THEM PERSONAL. Get beyond general gratitude; speak personally to them.
24. “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preferences to one another.”
25. 3. PEOPLE LOOK FOR A BETTER TOMORROW. GIVE THEM HOPE Key Principle: The key to today is a belief in tomorrow. Everyone lives for something better to come. Where there is no hope in the future, there is no power in the present.
26. Lamentations 3:21-23 “Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! Great is His faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each day.”
27. 4. PEOPLE NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD. LISTEN TO THEM. Key Principle: To connect with others, understand the “keys” to their heart. Knowing the key to someone’s heart: What do they talk about? What do they cry about? What do they dream about? What do they laugh about? What do they plan about?
29. 5. PEOPLE LACK DIRECTION. NAVIGATE FOR THEM. Key Principle: Most people can steer the ship; a leader helps chart the course. Leaders must know the way. Leaders must go the way. Leaders must show the way.
30. “The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly.”
31. 6. PEOPLE ARE NEEDY. SPEAK TO THEIR NEEDS FIRST. Key Principle: People must be ministered to before they can minister.
32. MOST PEOPLE THINK LEADERS MUST . . . Their situation is unique. Put their people first. Their problems are the biggest. Know their people’s needs. Their faults should be overlooked. See the total picture. Their time is most precious. Love people to help them grow.
33. Philippians 2:4 “Let each of you look out not only for his own interest, but also for the interest of others.”
34. 7. PEOPLE GET EMOTIONALLY LOW. ENCOURAGE THEM. Key Principle: What gets rewarded gets done. An Experiment. . . Years ago, an experiment was conducted to measure people’s capacity to endure pain. How long could a bare – footed person stand in a bucket of ice water? It was discovered that when there was someone else present offering encouragement and support, the person standing in the ice water could tolerate the pain twice as long as when there was no one present.
35. Colossians 3:113 “ …put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another
36. 8. PEOPLE WANT TO SUCCEED. HELP THEM WIN. Key Principle: Reach out and help others achieve their goals. Victory has a thousand fathers, defeat is an orphan.
37. What do these words have in common? High morale Optimism Enthusiasm Energy Momentum Excitement
38. Answer Victory. Everyone wants to be on a term that experiences victories and reaches the goal they are pursuing. Leaders provide this for others.
39. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10a “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.” )
40. 9. PEOPLE DESIRE RELATIONSHIPS .PROVIDE COMMUNITY. Key Principle: Practice 11% principle with people: Find the 1% you have in common with someone, and give it 100% of your attention. God’s word is all about community – from the Garden of Eden in the beginning to the city of God in the end. We were never intended to take the Christian journey alone. The New Testament teaches us “we are members of one another.” The word “saint” (in the singular form) does not appear once, in the New Testament. The word “saints” (in the plural form) appears many times.
41. I Corinthians 12: 26 “And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.:
42. 10. PEOPLE SEEK MODELS TO FOLLOW. BE AN EXAMPLE. Key Principle: People do what people see. A life example: The early followers of St. Francis Assisi wanted to know what to do when they went out into the streets to minister. “Preach the Gospel at all times,” St. Francis advised, “ If necessary, use words.”
43. 1 Corinthians 11:1 “And you should follow my example, just as I follow the example of Christ.”
