Abraham Lincoln s Childhood
Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 1809 to Nancy and Thomas
Lincoln. He had one older sister, Sarah, and one younger brother, Thomas who died very young. At
the age of nine his mother died of milk sickness. His father found a new wife and the kids grew close
to their step mom. Abe only went to school for a short time, but his step mom was very encouraging
about his education. He was very good at helping out around the farm as well as educating himself. As
a young adult Abraham Lincoln had many jobs. He sailed ferry boats, postmaster, store clerk, and
railsplitter. However, he was most interested in being a lawyer and politician. His first job with

Multiple Discriminant Analysis
WEB EXTENSION 22A Multiple Discriminant Analysis s we have seen, bankruptcy or even the
possibility of bankruptcy can cause significant trauma for a firm s managers, investors, suppliers,
customers, and community. Thus, it would be beneficial to be able to predict the likelihood of
bankruptcy so that steps could be taken to avoid it or at least to reduce its impact. One approach to
bankruptcy prediction is multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), a statistical technique similar to
regression analysis. In this extension, we discuss MDA in detail and illustrate its application to
bankruptcy prediction.1 Suppose a bank loan officer wants to segregate corporate loan applications

1. The discriminant function is fitted (that is, the values of a, b1, and b2 are obtained) using historical
data for a sample of firms that either went bankrupt or did not go bankrupt during some past period.
When the data in the lower part of Figure 22A 1 were fed into a canned discriminant analysis program
(the computing centers of most universities and large corporations have such programs), the following
discriminant function was obtained: Web Extension 22A: Multiple Discriminant Analysis 3 Z ¼
−0:3877 − 1:0736ðCurrent ratioÞ þ 0:0579ðDebt ratioÞ 2. This equation was plotted on Figure 22A 1
as the locus of points for which Z = 0. All combinations of current ratios and debt ratios shown on the
line result in Z = 0.2 Companies that lie to the left of the line (and also have Z 0) are unlikely to go
bankrupt; those that lie to the right (and have Z 0) are likely to go bankrupt. It can be seen from the
graph that one X (indicating a failing company) lies to the left of the line and that two dots (indicating
nonbankrupt companies) lie to the right of the line. Thus, the discriminant analysis failed to properly
classify three companies: Z Po s i t i v e : M D A Pr e d i c t s B a n k r up t c y Did subsequently go

Exam 1 Essay Manchus were the one that took control of China after the Yuan (which was the
Mongols) and established themselves as the Qing Dynasty. It is also this dynasty that the modern
Chinese started. Around the 18th century, the Qing was at its height. However, by the start of the 19th
century until the early 20th century, the Qing Dynasty started going downhill with domestic political
and foreign policy problems. Within the nation, there were continuation and changes to the traditional
Confucian system; Furthermore, there were rebellions due to foreign competitions that lead to the end
of the Qing Dynasty. The Qing empire ruled China with Confucianism as the main imperial system
used until the very end. However, the beginning of Qing downfall result of the exam system became
corrupted and filled with bribery. Instead of the fair examination on the knowledge of Confucianism,
the wealthy use their power to get their ways, result in not the most qualified politicians. Additionally,
it shows the lack of Confucius value in the Qing system. On the other hand, bureaucracy meant to

Child Abuse And It s Connection With Social Work
Child Abuse and
It s Connection with Social Work
Amanda Miller
SWK 3301 01
Child Abuse and It s Connection with Social Work Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun;
not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul (Pelzer, 1995, p. 166). Various discussions, studies,
and ethical problems are formed around the topic of child abuse. Child abuse, defined by the Child
Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), is any recent act or failure to act on the part of a
parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or
exploitation ; or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm. (Gateway,
2013) This leaves a large area for speculation on whether situations are covered under this definition.
Nonetheless, child abuse is an unfortunate and growing problem in society today. With several causes
such as poverty, parents who do not know any differently, and behavioral issues. These are all areas
that social workers deal with on a day to day basis.
Why child abuse? There are many outlooks involving values that form social work through ethical,
personal, and professional. As far as ethically, social work can become very challenging for the social
worker themselves. This is because of the ethical dilemmas emerge in certain cases when social
workers have to choose between their duties, values, and rights. These arises due to some of the
obligations that are expected of them colliding with

The Is A Disorder Diagnosed When Oral Language
SLI is a disorder diagnosed when oral language lags behind other areas of development for no
apparent reason (Bishop Snowling, 2004). Many studies report that SLI affects a relatively large
percentage of the child population, around 5% 10%, (McArthur et al., 2000). Furthermore, McArthur
et al. (2000) showed that more than 50% of children with dyslexia also meet the criteria for SLI (see
also Marshall, Harcourt Brown, Ramus Van der Lely, 2009 and McArthur Hogben, 2001). Bishop and
Snowling (2004) claim that diagnostic criteria for SLI are vague. This is
153
because children with SLI display significant difficulties with one or more linguistic domains, such as
phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In fact, the defining criterion states that a child has SLI
if their difficulties cannot be explained by deficits in other aspects of cognition that are linked to
language acquisition, such as intelligence, hearing, oral motor skills and language exposure
(Dollaghan, 2008), but does not specifically define any subfield of linguistics as crucial for the
discrimination.
5. 4. 2 SLI and morphology
Friedmann Novogrodsky (2006) present a detailed discussion of variability in SLI. The authors
distinguish between phonological SLI, syntactic SLI, semantic SLI and pragmatic SLI. In their study,
the authors tested children with SLI using tapping tasks in dissociated form on syntax, semantics,
phonology or pragmatics. They observed that children s difficulties can be

Essay On Martial Arts Training
Mom, can I take karate lessons?
It s a question that s bound to come up if you re raising boys and increasingly girls. Martial arts
training has become as popular with girls as dance and gymnastics used to be. The media attention to
such martial sports and fighting arts as kickboxing, muay thai, karate, jiu jitsu, tae kwon do and other
forms of martial arts have fueled their popularity among youth and adults.
One of the least discussed aspects of martial arts training among non initiates is the equipment and
gear that you ll need. If you or your child(ren) are considering signing up for martial arts classes, here
s a brief overview of the types of equipment that you may need to purchase for training.

In addition to the uniforms, you may also be required to purchase protective gear for training and
sparring. At the very least, most schools and instructors require that students wear mouth guards when

Essay On Stormbreaker
First of all, in the novel Stormbreaker, 14 year old Alex Rider experiences things that a normal

The Progress of an Aztec Warrior
The image of The Progress of an Aztec Warrior taken from the Codex Mendoza gives us some idea of
the highly ritualized, even religious, character of Aztec warfare (Austin 209). The dress adopted by
Aztec warriors was hardly protective: from the depictions in the Codex Mendoza it appears that they
fought mostly naked. Although protected by a shield, otherwise they were adorned with feathers,
flowers, and animal skins, indicating that the warrior s identity was in some way dedicated to the
totemic animal gods of the Aztec religion. But the ideology of warfare was practically inculcated in
the Aztecs from birth. Inga Clendinnen notes that childbed was conventionally designated a
battlefield, where a woman could take a captive by capturing a baby. The midwife greeted the birth of
a male child with warcries and a formal exhortation, addressed to the child, but directed, of course, to
the panting, newly delivered mother, who was emphatically not given the baby to hold: My precious
son, my youngest one...heed, hearken: thy home is not here, for thou art an eagle, a jaguar...here is
only the place of thy nest...out there thou hast been consecrated...War is thy desert, thy task. Thou
shalt give drink, nourishment, food to the sun, lord of the earth...perhaps thou wilt receive the gift,
perhaps thou wilt merit death by the obsidian knife...The flowered death by the obsidian knife [that is,
death on the killing stone] (Clendinnen 17) Because the Aztec mode of warfare was focused on

Organic Vs Non Organic Vineyards
Organic vs Non Organic Vineyards
There s many differences between organic vineyards and non organic vineyards. Organic vineyards,
for instance, produce their wine by excluding the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides,
fungicides and herbicides. Non organic vineyards on the other hand, produce their wine by applying
these products. Every year that goes by, our generation is becoming more advanced in the usage of
organic products. Many things sold in groceries stores are now available organically, for instance
fruits and other types of nourishments. The positives and negatives of non organic and organic
vineyards both have good arguments but in my opinion organic vineyards tend to have more of a
positive effect in our society. Whenever something is organic, everyone believes that it s healthy, but
that is not the case, not all organic things are as healthy as they are portrayed to be. Some negatives of
organic wine are that organic wine does not contain sulfite, which people claim it reduces its shelf life
and in some cases changes its flavors ( Clearing up the Confusion about Organic Wine ). Organic wine
also brings a much healthier option to the table; in recent years it has become more popular throughout
the Napa Valley. A positive note about organic wine is that organic wine doesn t contain artificial
chemical fertilizers which could possibly cause some long term side effects to the human body. One
never knows what artificial chemical fertilizers consist

The Usa Patriot Act And The Homeland Security Act
September 11, 2001 is a date that will live on forever in American history, much like the date of
December 7, 1941. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt stated it is a date, which will live in infamy.
The fear and the need to protect the country and its citizens from future terrorist attacks resulted in the
U.S. Government to enact two different policies. The Uniting and Strengthening America by

Analysis Of Lorna Crozier s Poem The Eye Rhyme
A strong masculine rhyme consisting of a single stressed syllable My Tongue is generations dead, My
Nose defiles a comely head; (5 6) gives a weight to these lines and provides rhetorical emphasis. It
creates a break by bonding these lines tightly to each other. Because it is a perfect rhyme, it sounds a
bit cutesy and childish, so it creates levity to contrast and enlighten the theme of death. The eye
rhyme, For hearkening to carnal evils My Ears have been the very devil s (7 8) creates more
dissonance and thus disjunction in the reader. This irritation allows passage back into a state where it
easier to empathize with the devil and evil. More furtive then the Hand in low And vicious venery Not
so! (11 12) exemplifies an imperfect or partial or approximate or slant or pararhyme which supports
the theme of deception and dissent articulated by the words, furtive (11) and, Not so! (12).
3.What is the chief symbol in Lorna Crozier s poem Forms of Innocence (Geddes, 751)? What does
the symbol suggest beyond its literal meaning?
The chief symbol in Lorna Crozier s poem is the black swan. The swan evokes the dark passionate
mysterious mystic of wild unpredictable dark feminine energy that holds the quiet potential power of
creation. The swan is the companion of the love goddesses Saraswati and Venus in Roman mythology.
It represents the flight of a young girl s innocent ignorance towards the sky as it is ripped away by the

The Relationship Between Parents And Children
According to Confucius, for a society to exist in peace and harmony, five great fundamental
relationships have to be respected. These relationships are of father and son, ruler and subject,
husband and wife, elder and younger and lastly but not least, parents and children. There were
appropriate attitudes or the Yi that people were expected to adopt. For instance, fathers were advised
to be kind to their sons and in return, the sons were supposed to be obedient and dutiful to their
fathers. Likewise, rulers were expected to be kind and generous to their subjects while subjects were
supposed to show total loyalty to their rulers. In marriage, a wife was expected to be obedient and
submissive to his husband while the husband was supposed to love and be good to his wife. Elders,
whether brothers or friends, were to be considerate towards their juniors, who in turn showed respect

Theories Of Employee Retention
Here in the United States, there has been an emerging issue that has challenged management within
the workforce. That issue is simply put is employee retention. With so many at will employment
options out there, fierce competition amongst business and those businesses looking to operate more
efficiently with less staff, employee retention has become an issue. So we have to ask ourselves how
do we combat this issue? This issue is a very complex one here in America because of the melting pot
we are with cultures, beliefs, structures, restrictions, affirmative action and etc. Throughout our studies
the research has shown that thriving organizations will be the ones that adopt and emplace an
organizational behavior model that focuses on being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fourth would be how to overcome low motivation. With these factors, ideas of how to communicate
the plan within the organization must be implemented. The Sheriff has hired an expert advisor in the
field of Effective law enforcement organizational planning when understaffed to achieve the
aforementioned. For the purpose of this paper let s say that I will be this expert.
One of the key factors for retention strategy and hiring of new employees goes far and beyond a
competitive benefits package and salary. However the latter is very much so important and would
need to be addressed. After brief study of surrounding law enforcement agencies I have come to the
conclusion that MCSO is behind a little when it comes to compensation and benefits. The neighboring
county of Palm Beach has a starting salary of $47,220 for law enforcement positions (Sentinel, A. R.
2014). This is approximately a full $7,000 more than MCSO s starting salary. Not to mention the Fire
Department within Martin County has a starting salary around $48,000. In my professional opinion
public service is public service and both the fire department and sheriff s office fall under this
umbrella. There needs to be more parity here because it seems to be a common complaint amongst the
employees of the sheriff s office which negatively affects motivation and morale.
Research suggest that employees rank recognition, flexibility and training as top priorities for
prolonging

How Does The Father Figure In Gravel And The Autobiography...
The short story Gravel and the autobiography Night are written by Alice Munro. They share the
common idea that the father figure affects the narrator in Gravel and Alice in Night. The question How
does the father figure affect the narrator and Alice in each story? is the main question that s asked and
deeply explained in the context of the stories. In Gravel there are two father figures. There is the
narrator s biological dad and her step dad, Neil. When the mom leaves the biological dad she moves in
with the step dad. Throughout the story Neil isn t consistent with his parenting. One moment he gets

which was thought to be cancerous, so it was removed. This incident mentally removed her from the

factor of Alice having horrible thoughts about strangling her sister in her sleep. In order to make sure

Summary Of Josiah Strong
Josiah Strong is mostly concerned that Catholicism and Mormonism is a treat to the progressive nature
of the United States. He has a much greater fear of the Catholics or Romans as he calls them. He
believes that what they stand for is a danger to the declaration of independence based on the ideas they
stand for. The examples he gives are that the Catholics are opposed to the public school system,
approve union of church and state, censor freedom of press and speech, teach religious intolerance
instead of liberty, they have loyalty to the pope and not to the states, abide by the commands of the
pope and not of the constitution, and they have sovereignty for the pope and not the people (371) He
questions how the Catholics could both swear loyalty

Case Study Sterling
This experience was definitely not what I expected it to be; Sterling is a small town and it always
seems like there is nothing to do. However, not I see that it is looking to expand and incorporate many
modern ideas into the old fashioned community. In addition, I did not realize how many crucial issues
the Council deals with on a daily basis (i.e. the marijuana bill). Although Sterling may be a smaller
town, but a lot of government and other proceedings go on actively. Moreover, I expected a much
longer meeting both times. The first time I understand there was not much to talk about; however,
even for all the things covered in the second meeting, it went relatively fast. Maybe if I had stayed for
the work session it would seem longer. Secondly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first is the level of government responsible. We had a discussion over this early in the course and I
got the full understanding after attending these meetings. For example, the marijuana selling bill came
up at the first meeting I attended. It is legal in the state of Colorado to sell marijuana; however, if you
local county/city/etc. does not permit it, you are not allowed to. This is the case in Sterling, but it may
soon change. The second concept I witnessed when attending these meeting was voter, or public,
participation. As I stated before, not many people attended the first meeting. Maybe two rows of chair
were filled total. If more people were involved with their local governments, more actions could be
completed and things could be done quicker. I am going to encourage more people I know to attend
these meetings, not only for the publics sake but also for their own knowledge and awareness. Finally,
I witnessed many tax and other budget issues being handled and contemplated at the meetings. For
example, the City Manager Saling talked about the sales tax is still on a steady incline that is likely to
continue. He encouraged the public to be aware and watch this so they can adjust their personal
budgets. In addition, the budget issue appeared again with the marijuana bill. The Council

Intro: Refugees face a far worse life than most people can imagine, and there is no easy way out for
them. They first must get out of whatever dangerous place they are in, then travel long distances with

George S Patton Rhetorical Analysis
The best leaders understand that their power comes from those that they lead. In the throes of World
War II, the army was under new management; a U.S. general by the name of George S. Patton took
command of the Third Army before the allies invaded France. In assuming this power, it was
necessary to convince the soldiers in that army to follow him, possibly to their own deaths. By
analyzing the direct syntax, formatting shift in point of view, and abrasive language, it is evident that
Patton asserts that he must be respected in order to gain the soldiers trust. By utilizing short and direct
syntax, Patton cuts all verbosity, allowing him to effectively assert his authority and qualifications as
the commander of the Third Army. Patton uses sentences such as I am here because of the confidence
of two men: The president of the United States and the theater commander. The syntax is very matter
of fact, which accomplishes two purposes. One purpose is to project that he doesn t have time for b.s.
and that he is to the point and overt. Not bureaucratic in the slightest. The other purpose is to establish
his own credibility through dropping the president and the theater commander as references for
qualification. He also states both were wrong, in reference to those who believed that the allies
wouldn t fight back. This direct statement leaves no room for contention, which institutes Patton s
sense of conviction and authority. In addition, the direct syntax allows for brutal

The War Of The Persian War
In Ancient Greece there were many famous wars and conquerors, in every era. These wars were all
recorded in early history and lasted a couple of years. The only one that was not, or is thought to be
made up, is the Trojan War. The only things they can go off of are the stories and the ruins of the city
of Troy. Another famous war was the Persian wars. This war was the first big war between the persian
empire and Spartans/Athens. After the Persian war, the Peloponnesian war took place, which was led
by sparta. Than in Ancient Greece there were two main conquerors, Philip II and Alexander. As they
are father and son, Philip II did a lot less than his son Alexander. Alexander wanted to fulfill his father
s visions, which he exceeded his expectations. The trojan war took place in 1250 B.C.E. As this war
has little evidence that it happened, it was passed down through many generations that this war took
place. Many stories have the war happening in the city of Troy. Two famous poets wrote about this
war, Homer and Sophocles, which wrote the Iliad Odyssey. These poems are part of evidence that this
war took place. One of the stories has a Wooden Horse as a gift to the Trojans, and when the horse
was in the city the Spartans invaded Troy. This war was to believe to be started by the kidnapping of
the Spartan Queen, Helen, by the Trojan prince, Paris. This ended with the Greeks winning and in
some stories, the death of the Trojan prince. The Persian war lasted from 499 B.C.E

Seneca Falls The First Women s Rights Convention
Seneca Falls was the first women s rights convention in the United States. The convention took place
at the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls, NY, on July 19, 1848 (Seneca Falls Convention Begins). This
convention was organized by two abolitionist named Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton with
the help of Martha Wright, Mary Ann McClintock, and Jane Hunt. They posted the announcement in
the Seneca County Courier on July 14, 1848. The message said A Convention to discuss the social,
civil, and religious conditions and rights of women will be held... (American Memory). The Seneca
Falls community was open to the idea of changing public roles of women in society. So it was no
surprise when about 300 people responded to the message in the courier. The convention took place
for two days, Wednesday July 19, 1848 and Thursday July 20, 1989. During the two day period the
participants listened to multiple speeches, wrote the Declaration of Sentiments, created 11 resolutions
that proclaimed equality of all people and declared all laws/customs that subordinated women
illegitimate. The first day of the convention was exclusive to women only. Elizabeth Cady Stanton
introduced the Declaration of Sentiments. The Declaration of Sentiments was a document that was
similar to the Declaration of Independence written by Stanton, it included a list of eighteen grievances
women faced and eleven resolutions. During the first day the women read and revised the Declaration

The housing market crash of 2007 to 2009 is said to be one of the main reasons for the housing market
crash. The crisis occurred when homeowners were not able to make payments on their mortgage.
Homeowners were unable to keep up with payments when low introductory rates converted to regular

Soon after the housing bubble the government took over (two GSEs) Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, in

What is a Health Economist?
Health economists are professionals who combine their knowledge of economics and the health care
industry to analyze how health care resource are used and distributed. They focus on ways to better
understand the health care system, improve health care policies and the quality of patient care.
Health Economics
Health economics is a new subfield of economics that analyzes various health care related topics. For
example, some health economists evaluate the long term effects of lifestyle choices on health. Others
examine the estimated costs and benefits of new or proposed health care policies. One health
economist may propose more efficient ways to provide certain health care services, while another may

After graduation, health economists will understand the critical roles that economic reasoning and cost
analyses play in forming public health care policies. Graduates will understand the interrelationships
between economics and biostatistics, epidemiology, public health and disease modeling. Based on this
knowledge, health economists produce data driven research regarding health services, systems and
interventions.
Health economists must have advanced math and computer skills because they frequently create
analytical and statistical models with complex software programs. They will use economic theories to

The O 1 Bird Dog Essay
The O 1 Bird Dog The First World War clearly demonstrated that airplanes had a promising career in
warfare. With rapid development creating larger, faster and more capable aircraft the task of putting
their munitions on target became increasingly complex and called for a new type of control. In March
of 1942 FM 31 35 defined the role of the Air Ground Cooperation Parties (AGCP) (Farmer
Strumwasser, 1967). The role of the AGCP was to coordinate airborne fires in support of ground units
and the AGCP cell was assumed to be located with the headquarters element, usually detached from
the front line (Farmer Strumwasser, 1967). Through continued evolution of the AGCP concept the
observer was moved further from the headquarters and placed on or near the front lines to provide
immediate tactical control of airborne fires platforms. The AGCP concept proved to be so effective
that it continued development through the Second World War and into the Korean War. With the
predominance of close air support aircraft located far away at Itazuki Air Base in Japan during the
Korean War a ground based controller was ineffective at identifying targets for the pilots to engage
before they needed to return for fuel (Farmer Strumwasser, 1967). This led to the airborne Forward
Air Controller (FAC). Flying a small maneuverable craft at low levels airborne FAC s could easily
pick out targets unseen from ground level and quickly vector or lead attack planes to them for
engagement. The

According to the theory observed by the researchers, the criminal justice system not only has
emphasized the interests of the offenders but has put the victims secondary to those offenders.
Individuals can experience many types of victimizations which include domestic violence, theft, and
child abuse. The perception of the masses in our society about these crimes and others are not always
valid or accurate. The perceptions that are driven by those of the media include myths about certain
crimes and the distinguishing characteristics of some of those that have been victimized. Some
examples of these perceptions that are held by our society are people are to blame for their own
victimizations, they might deserve this kind of treatment because of who they are or where they live
and lastly, individuals usually recover from being victimized rather quickly. These perceptions are to
blame for negative reactions that victims receive from the public and the criminal justice system. I
think due to shows like America s Most Wanted has really curbed society s perceptions of victims and
criminals. These types of shows have diminished the stereotypical mentality that has existed here in
America for centuries and that is people are not to blame for being victimized because of their status

Support Language Development
There are many factors which can aid language development, particularly through writing (Watts et
al., 2013). Jones and Coffey (2013) identified that writing should be developed procedurally through
copying, initially at word level to learn spellings and develop familiarisation with vocabulary and
individual letters. Before then progressing to phrase level and on to sentences. It is thought that
through copying the children are beginning to memorise the vocabulary and can help them to engrain
key sentence structures, as they pay close attention to the individual words and spellings. Macaro
(2006) has also identified that copy writing is often used as a way of remembering spellings for new
target vocabulary. Hurrell (1999) criticises the motion of copy writing: as it gives the children too
many things to focus on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a very difficult task especially in a foreign language with differing word structures and
sentence conventions. Another criticism of copy writing is that children often make assumptions that
copy writing is easy which means they do not necessarily pay full attention, meaning they make
careless mistakes which result in the little recall of the vocabulary (Macaro, 2006). Alternative
activities such as word searches, crosswords and gap filling exercises, as outlined by Kirsch (2008),
encourage the children to focus on each individual letter, which thus supports the memorisation of
their spellings. It also encourages the ability to identify common grammatical structures and raises
phonetic awareness. It is important for children to improve their phonetic awareness when learning to
write in a foreign language alongside being allowed to make mistakes without fear of second language
anxiety, as outlined by Levine

Critically Examine the Claim That Free Will and...
Critically examine the claim that free will and determinism are incompatible
One of the main questions that we face is whether or not, we as humans have genuine freedom. Are
we free to make our own choices? Do we decide what happens in our lives in the future? Or are our
lives set pathways in which we have no say at all? Are all our choices already decided? In other
words, do we have free will or are our actions pre determined, or both? Hard determinists, libertarians
and soft determinists all set out to provide answers to these questions, holding different views on
whether or not free will and determinism are compatible. Both hard determinists and libertarians

Many believe that the world is largely determined but we can still act freely as our behaviour is not
predictable. Thomas Aquinas disagreed with hard determinism as he believed that man chooses freely,
not out of necessity . Although Aquinas and others that criticise hard determinism and disagree with
the hard determinist views, would still agree with hard determinists in that free will and determinism
are incompatible, but would argue that we have free will but our lives are not determined. This view
that free will and determinism are incompatible but it is free will that exists, not determinism, is also
supported by libertarians.
Libertarians believe that we are free and are morally responsible for our actions. They believe that the
inanimate world is mechanical and is therefore caused and predictable but reject the idea that this
extends to humans. Libertarians hold that we are not compelled to act by forces outside our moral
consciousness; moral actions instead come from the character and values of the agent. There are
factors which may influence someone to act in one way but it is not certain that they will. C.A.
Campbell s notion of freedom states that when you are acting freely, the future is genuinely open to
you and you can actually choose one way or another, even with given nature and nurture. Libertarians
do not argue for absolute freedom but significant freedom that it is a

This story follows one man s quest to uncover the origins and reveal the mysteries of a possible
Holocaust artifact some historians now say never existed: lampshades made of human skin. When the

events, writing masters and everything else that takes part of the Haitian literature that complement
the essence of Haitians culture. I would like to learn all these relevant aspects about Haiti since I do
not know that much of this country. I just know that Haiti is a very poor country where people are very
in need and the government does intervene to improve the quality of lives of its residents, and that
Haitians native languages are creole and French.I would like to know why the governments does not
take action about it. So, in I order to understand the political aspects of the Haitian government, I will
need to know about the history of this country. Its foundation, and all the ideologies and philosophies
that has been involved through the diverse political systems of Haiti. ... Show more content on

I also expect to know about the different Haitians religion practices and its diversity of languages such
as, creole, French, English, and Spanish. I know that most of wealthy Haitians manage fluently
English, French and Spanish, because they have the opportunity of getting educated in high class
colleges. I had a rich Haitian friend that told me about this fact. I remember, he used to help me to do
my English and French homework when I was in high

Reformation And The Counter-Reformation
The Renaissance is one of the Catholic churches highest peak during the ages. Yet, much speculation
and riots occur due to the intense demand for reformation and Martin Luther s attempt to bring into
realization the church s dark secrets. In the mist of division the Catholic Church in order to counter act
the accusations that were made against them invested their time in the Counter Reformation. The
Counter Reformation created a restoring of the church. The Council of Trent was created in order to
help answer the questions posed against the church and bring back the faith and trust of the people
back to the Catholic Church. This Counter Reformation is highly significant to the Baroque Era in
Italy because both exemplify the humanistic traits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gian Lorenzo Bernini is identified as the prominent architect during the Baroque era. Bernini s breath
taking monuments is the main reason Rome and the Vatican still flourished during the counter
reformation. Bernini is the creator of the famous colonnades and piazza at Saint Peter s. Bernini s
main patronage was Pope Urban VII. The Cathedra Petri was one of Bernini s masterpieces which
exemplified his way of decorating richly and his gift of sculpting. David, Bernini s version, shows the
baroque style in his sculptors as well. David depicts strong emotion and concentration in mist battle.
Inside the church of Saint Peter s, he still lives on in his work and is responsible for the Baldacchino,
the canopy of bronze, which is located at the main altar. Francesco Borromini is known to be Bernini s
close rival. Borromini is said to use geometric figure (New World Encyclopedia) in his designs. This
is significant because it shows the complexity in his style of Baroque. It shows that though far from
perfect to the eye, Baroque architecture really is made from perfect components in order to create one
large piece. The entire structure must be able to flow smoothly without losing that complex aspect. For
instance, in his Sant Ivo alla Sapienza Borromini must execute a spiral formation as a dome.
Borromini s most significant architecture is his San Carlo alle Quattro

Phoebe In The Rye, By J. D. Salinger
In the novel, J.D. Salinger also portrays Phoebe as genuine and down to earth, demonstrated through
Phoebe s actions. As Holden is about to return Phoebe s money, she is unhesitant to give all of her
own money to him. Phoebe says, You keep it. Keep it for me. Please. (231). Phoebe s willingness to
sacrifice what everyone seems to be needing in the 1950s society, suggests that she is very heroic
when it comes to Holden. Phoebe s actions manifest her genuine and down to earth characteristics that
Holden seems to like most about her. As the reader gets more and more into the novel, they come to
learn that Phoebe is Holden s only way of surviving the society of the 1950s. Just as Phoebe discovers
of Holden s dropping out from Pencey Prep, she

Improving Work Efficiency
. Plan your work: Planning your work will help you maximise your time and performance because it
allows you to stay on top of your current tasks and objectives. It is a very effective strategy because if
you put all of your work into files all tagged and coloured it makes it easier for you to find work and
sheets that need to be used for certain papers. It saves times and leaves you less stressed about the job.

Measure personal performance: Measuring personal performance is my last strategy that can help
maximise time and performance. It can help time and performance by developing a criteria against
which your performance can be mapped or elevated. It is good to go by Key Performance Indicators
(KPI) which is a list of characteristics associated with effective or superior performance in a particular
job role. In other words telling employees what they are required to accomplish and how their success
is measured. This helps your job become easier which means you don t have to spend so much time on
your employees and you can work on your performance. Examples of KPIs would be a courier might
have a KPI relating to the percentage of deliveries made on time or the percentage of sales that a sales

  • 2. Abraham Lincoln s Childhood Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 1809 to Nancy and Thomas Lincoln. He had one older sister, Sarah, and one younger brother, Thomas who died very young. At the age of nine his mother died of milk sickness. His father found a new wife and the kids grew close to their step mom. Abe only went to school for a short time, but his step mom was very encouraging about his education. He was very good at helping out around the farm as well as educating himself. As a young adult Abraham Lincoln had many jobs. He sailed ferry boats, postmaster, store clerk, and railsplitter. However, he was most interested in being a lawyer and politician. His first job with politics was an Illinois legislator. Slavery ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Multiple Discriminant Analysis WEB EXTENSION 22A Multiple Discriminant Analysis s we have seen, bankruptcy or even the possibility of bankruptcy can cause significant trauma for a firm s managers, investors, suppliers, customers, and community. Thus, it would be beneficial to be able to predict the likelihood of bankruptcy so that steps could be taken to avoid it or at least to reduce its impact. One approach to bankruptcy prediction is multiple discriminant analysis (MDA), a statistical technique similar to regression analysis. In this extension, we discuss MDA in detail and illustrate its application to bankruptcy prediction.1 Suppose a bank loan officer wants to segregate corporate loan applications into those likely to default and those unlikely to default. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 1. The discriminant function is fitted (that is, the values of a, b1, and b2 are obtained) using historical data for a sample of firms that either went bankrupt or did not go bankrupt during some past period. When the data in the lower part of Figure 22A 1 were fed into a canned discriminant analysis program (the computing centers of most universities and large corporations have such programs), the following discriminant function was obtained: Web Extension 22A: Multiple Discriminant Analysis 3 Z ¼ −0:3877 − 1:0736ðCurrent ratioÞ þ 0:0579ðDebt ratioÞ 2. This equation was plotted on Figure 22A 1 as the locus of points for which Z = 0. All combinations of current ratios and debt ratios shown on the line result in Z = 0.2 Companies that lie to the left of the line (and also have Z 0) are unlikely to go bankrupt; those that lie to the right (and have Z 0) are likely to go bankrupt. It can be seen from the graph that one X (indicating a failing company) lies to the left of the line and that two dots (indicating nonbankrupt companies) lie to the right of the line. Thus, the discriminant analysis failed to properly classify three companies: Z Po s i t i v e : M D A Pr e d i c t s B a n k r up t c y Did subsequently go bankrupt Remained solvent 8 2 Z Ne g a t i v e : M DA Pre d i ct s S o l v e ncy 1 8 The model did not perform perfectly, since two predicted bankruptcies remained solvent and one firm that was expected to remain ... This is 153 because children with SLI display significant difficulties with one or more linguistic domains, such as phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In fact, the defining criterion states that a child has SLI if their difficulties cannot be explained by deficits in other aspects of cognition that are linked to language acquisition, such as intelligence, hearing, oral motor skills and language exposure (Dollaghan, 2008), but does not specifically define any subfield of linguistics as crucial for the discrimination. 5. 4. 2 SLI and morphology Friedmann Novogrodsky (2006) present a detailed discussion of variability in SLI. The Progress of an Aztec Warrior The image of The Progress of an Aztec Warrior taken from the Codex Mendoza gives us some idea of the highly ritualized, even religious, character of Aztec warfare (Austin 209). The dress adopted by Aztec warriors was hardly protective: from the depictions in the Codex Mendoza it appears that they fought mostly naked. Although protected by a shield, otherwise they were adorned with feathers, flowers, and animal skins, indicating that the warrior s identity was in some way dedicated to the totemic animal gods of the Aztec religion. But the ideology of warfare was practically inculcated in the Aztecs from birth. Inga Clendinnen notes that childbed was conventionally designated a battlefield, where a woman could take a captive by capturing a baby. The midwife greeted the birth of a male child with warcries and a formal exhortation, addressed to the child, but directed, of course, to the panting, newly delivered mother, who was emphatically not given the baby to hold: My precious son, my youngest one...heed, hearken: thy home is not here, for thou art an eagle, a jaguar...here is only the place of thy nest...out there thou hast been consecrated...War is thy desert, thy task. Non organic vineyards on the other hand, produce their wine by applying these products. Every year that goes by, our generation is becoming more advanced in the usage of organic products. Some negatives of organic wine are that organic wine does not contain sulfite, which people claim it reduces its shelf life and in some cases changes its flavors ( Clearing up the Confusion about Organic Wine ). These relationships are of father and son, ruler and subject, husband and wife, elder and younger and lastly but not least, parents and children. There were appropriate attitudes or the Yi that people were expected to adopt. For instance, fathers were advised to be kind to their sons and in return, the sons were supposed to be obedient and dutiful to their fathers. Likewise, rulers were expected to be kind and generous to their subjects while subjects were supposed to show total loyalty to their rulers. In marriage, a wife was expected to be obedient and submissive to his husband while the husband was supposed to love and be good to his wife. Elders, whether brothers or friends, were to be considerate towards their juniors, who in turn showed respect towards their elders. The most important relationship in which almost the Chinese culture is based on is the relationship between parents and children. Confucius believed that a smoothly functioning family; made up of respectful children to parents, ancestors and relatives were a model for the Chinese society as a whole. It is legal in the state of Colorado to sell marijuana; however, if you local county/city/etc. does not permit it, you are not allowed to. This is the case in Sterling, but it may soon change. The second concept I witnessed when attending these meeting was voter, or public, participation. As I stated before, not many people attended the first meeting. Maybe two rows of chair were filled total. If more people were involved with their local governments, more actions could be completed and things could be done quicker. I am going to encourage more people I know to attend these meetings, not only for the publics sake but also for their own knowledge and awareness. Finally, I witnessed many tax and other budget issues being handled and contemplated at the meetings. For example, the City Manager Saling talked about the sales tax is still on a steady incline that is likely to continue. He encouraged the public to be aware and watch this so they can adjust their personal budgets. In addition, the budget issue appeared again with the marijuana bill. The Council ... • 30. George S Patton Rhetorical Analysis The best leaders understand that their power comes from those that they lead. In the throes of World War II, the army was under new management; a U.S. general by the name of George S. Patton took command of the Third Army before the allies invaded France. In assuming this power, it was necessary to convince the soldiers in that army to follow him, possibly to their own deaths. By analyzing the direct syntax, formatting shift in point of view, and abrasive language, it is evident that Patton asserts that he must be respected in order to gain the soldiers trust. By utilizing short and direct syntax, Patton cuts all verbosity, allowing him to effectively assert his authority and qualifications as the commander of the Third Army. Patton uses sentences such as I am here because of the confidence of two men: The president of the United States and the theater commander. The syntax is very matter of fact, which accomplishes two purposes. One purpose is to project that he doesn t have time for b.s. and that he is to the point and overt. Not bureaucratic in the slightest. The other purpose is to establish his own credibility through dropping the president and the theater commander as references for qualification. He also states both were wrong, in reference to those who believed that the allies wouldn t fight back. This direct statement leaves no room for contention, which institutes Patton s sense of conviction and authority. In addition, the direct syntax allows for brutal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The O 1 Bird Dog Essay The O 1 Bird Dog The First World War clearly demonstrated that airplanes had a promising career in warfare. With rapid development creating larger, faster and more capable aircraft the task of putting their munitions on target became increasingly complex and called for a new type of control. In March of 1942 FM 31 35 defined the role of the Air Ground Cooperation Parties (AGCP) (Farmer Strumwasser, 1967). The role of the AGCP was to coordinate airborne fires in support of ground units and the AGCP cell was assumed to be located with the headquarters element, usually detached from the front line (Farmer Strumwasser, 1967). Through continued evolution of the AGCP concept the observer was moved further from the headquarters and placed on or near the front lines to provide immediate tactical control of airborne fires platforms. The AGCP concept proved to be so effective that it continued development through the Second World War and into the Korean War. With the predominance of close air support aircraft located far away at Itazuki Air Base in Japan during the Korean War a ground based controller was ineffective at identifying targets for the pilots to engage before they needed to return for fuel (Farmer Strumwasser, 1967). This led to the airborne Forward Air Controller (FAC). Flying a small maneuverable craft at low levels airborne FAC s could easily pick out targets unseen from ground level and quickly vector or lead attack planes to them for engagement. The ... Jones and Coffey (2013) identified that writing should be developed procedurally through copying, initially at word level to learn spellings and develop familiarisation with vocabulary and individual letters. Before then progressing to phrase level and on to sentences. It is thought that through copying the children are beginning to memorise the vocabulary and can help them to engrain key sentence structures, as they pay close attention to the individual words and spellings. Alternative activities such as word searches, crosswords and gap filling exercises, as outlined by Kirsch (2008), encourage the children to focus on each individual letter, which thus supports the memorisation of their spellings. It also encourages the ability to identify common grammatical structures and raises phonetic awareness. In other words, do we have free will or are our actions pre determined, or both? This view that free will and determinism are incompatible but it is free will that exists, not determinism, is also supported by libertarians. Libertarians believe that we are free and are morally responsible for our actions. They believe that the inanimate world is mechanical and is therefore caused and predictable but reject the idea that this extends to humans. Libertarians hold that we are not compelled to act by forces outside our moral consciousness; moral actions instead come from the character and values of the agent.
