Summary Of The Poem Leis Spears
Now that the holidays are approaching, a certain long lived adage makes its yearly debut: the feeling
of giving is better than the feeling of receiving. Of course, it is generally said in the context of gift
exchange. However, who is to say it cannot be a life lesson? Far too often, people are so very involved
in themselves that they lose sight of what truly matters, such as family or even community. They
believe their own problems to be far too great to waste time on helping others, which is exactly the
common schema Edgar Lee Masters refuted in his poem Lois Spears as a part of his collection of
poems, Spoon River Anthology. Lois Spears is a woman who, despite having to live without sight, is
incredibly happy with how she lived her life. She dedicated herself to serving others and joyfully did
so; her story did not convey an ounce of spite or bitterness. Masters ultimately wrote the poem Lois
Spears in order to display how looking away from one s own hindrances or troubles and dedicating
oneself to improving the lives of others can bring true happiness. Right at from the start, Masters
begins Lois story with an epitaph like statement regarding who she is in relation to others: ...
[d]aughter of Willard Fluke, / [w]ife of Cyrus Spears, / [m]other of Myrtle and Virgil Spears... Rather
than beginning to describe herself, Masters purposefully has Lois speak about others before herself in
order to show how Lois puts the needs of others before her own. She

The Political Problems Of Burma
Burma, also known as Myanmar, has been independent since 1948 and is involved in one of the world
s longest on going civil war. The British and Japanese occupation from 1924 to 1948 exacerbated
tensions between ethnic groups. The country is also characterised by its unstable political regime,
mainly military ones, and its diverse ethnic background. The main ethnic group are the Bamar and
occupy 60% of the land (Laoutsides and Ware, 2016). But no less than 135 ethnicities occupy the 40%
left. Identity in the country is seen as the main explanation as to why the country cannot solve its
political problems and is in constant conflict. We can wonder however to what extent can the conflict
be understood by solely focusing on identity.
If identity is an important factor in the emergence of tensions it is only one facet of the problem.
Alternative theories to the identity explanation on the causes of civil war are polarised between
grievance and greed theories (Ballentine and Nitzschke, 2003). However, it is possible to have a
complete understanding of the causes and dynamics of ethnic conflict when combining these two set
of theories together. Conflict arises from the grievance of an ethnic group but is then maintained by
the actors greed.
First, we will see the limits of identity theory in explaining ethnic conflicts using the example of
Burma. Then we will see how grievances can initiate conflict and how the greed theory explains why
it then persists. Finally, we will apply our

Cyber Terrorism And Cyber Attacks
Introduction
It is the era of cyber technology and there is lots of cyber attacks are happening every day, on many
organizations, private sectors, government sectors, these attacks are done by the cyber attackers or as
called hackers, these cyber attacks are also known as cyber terrorism attacks. Because of these attacks
all the countries are suffering to develop the country economical wise and other related to confidential

It is Important because organisations can find out the loopholes in the system and fix them from
attacks. Users privacy and data security is biggest thing to protect now days. If a small loophole left in
the system and hackers can hack the system because of the loophole and get access to the confidential
information. And hackers can get detail of of person from the social media websites and use it for
some illegal reason.
And before doing any business with third party the organisations always look for the PCI compliance
certifications. In the pen testing the important things needs to be tested are software, network and
hardware.
Types of the penetration testing.
1.social engineering: the main issue which cause the security vulnerability are human errors or as
called human mistakes. In case to avoid the social pen testing all the staff should follow all the
security standards and policies. Example any confidential information should not be shared over the
social media sites or over the phone conversation.
2. Application security testing: this is process in which we can use some software to find out if there
are loopholes to the system.
3. Physical penetration test: to protect sensitive and confidential data strong security measures are
applied. This is mainly used in the government bodies. All access points and physical network devices
are tested for possibilities of any security breach.
Techniques for penetration testing.:
1) Manual penetration test

The Civil Service Reform Act
This paper explains the history of federal employee labor relations and the personnel system, along
with an analysis of the most recent developments in the Civil Service Reform Act. The first section of
the paper explain the importance of the civil services reform and how the ideology, electoral
competition and political power gain forces political parties to make changes in policies and
introduced reforms. In the next section I shed some light on early reform of 19th century in the United
States. With the help of the 1996 Georgia Statues, I explain the radical civil services reforms, union
busting and at will employment and highlights how radical civil service reform swept the United
States and increase the number of at will employees. Furthermore, the paper also signifies the merit
system and ongoing challenges in civil services reform since the founding of the United States. In last
section the paper give some reflection on current civil services condition and speculate about the
future of civil services reforms.
Introduction: Governments across the United States have made several reforms in the civil services
due to change in political and fiscal circumstances. Typically those reforms are in awake of the social,
political and economic trends with in the government and its affiliated agencies. Nobody can deny the
importance of the bureaucratic system and the work they perform on all level of the society. For the
same reasons this bureaucratic system has deep

The World s Overpopulation Problem Essay
Have you ever wondered what earth would be like in the near future with over 10 billion people from
7 billion? A newspaper source from Population Peril states that there are 210,000 new people
everyday and by 2050 that there will be roughly 9.6 billion people (McClatchy). How are we going to
prevent the disastrous measure of pollution, diseases, extinction of resources, more poverty, people
and etc.? As the world s overpopulation problem should be changed to prevent future severe issues.
First off, the proponent states that the one future major problem that will ineffably get worse is
epidemic or outbreaks of disease and viruses. The more people on earth the higher chance diseases
will evolve and travel faster. As Keiji Fukuda, then the assistant director general for health security at
the World Health Organization (WHO), said in 2013, The world is not ready for a large, severe
outbreak. (Angell). Some new and old epidemic diseases that will get worse with more people is Zika
(mosquito), Cholera (sewage), Ebola, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), and MERS (Middle
East respiratory syndrome). Another virus is the bird flu that is even a further severe disease problem
as well as anything airborne. The New York Times, Michael T. Osterholm, the director of the Center
for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, wrote, Even more than
these viruses, we should be afraid of a planet wide catastrophe caused by influenza. (Angell).

It Was Awful And Bitter When The Allies And The Central
It was awful and bitter when the Allies and the Central Powers clashed and unleashed their military
power at the war front in World War I. World War I also known as the war to all end wars, or the Great
War occurred between June 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918. The war left over thirty eight million
civilians and militaries casualties. Much work was needed to get the European countries back together
after the war. In the book Fear written by Gabriel Chevallier, the narrator shows the unforgettable
memories a war can bring. The main character Jean Dartemont is supposed to be enthusiastic to go to
war like many other young nineteen year old French men at the time. Nationalism is high in France
and there are many military posters promoting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He takes a time throughout to book to look at his reason why he went off to war. The physical scars
that Jean left with during the war were clearly seen in these accounts. Emotionally the soldiers went
off to work feeling unbeatable with a strong nationalistic pride. However, they soon realized that all
their emotions would not be able to conqueror the evils the war had to offer. One of the most horrific
memories for Jean was when he spoke about the different type of corpse he saw while they were on
their way to another town. They had crouched down on their knees under a pile of debris. When they
got up they saw a decapitated head of a soldier who probably died days ago. Jean is shaken up by this
horrific site by saying that when he looked at the man s face he could fell like the man was blaming
him for his death. He reminisces on all the horrific events emotionally that left him scarred, however,
he goes on to say that this was the most horrible impression that he could take away from the war
front. Jean later goes on to describe the agony and numerous positions where the corpse would lay.
Personally, as the reader, I could really fell the suffering of the dying soldiers when Jean describes the
glass eyes and twisted mouths of the dead bodies in the trench . This evidence took a toll on Jean
because he leaves the scene in disgust and without hope of a return home. Lastly, the war

Pancakes Vs Waffles Research Paper
In a battle of epic proportions, who will win? Waffles or Pancakes? While both are widely eaten and
made, pancakes, with their easy assembly, creativity, and versatility, are the superior breakfast food.
Both pancakes and waffles are popular breakfast foods that everyone has eaten. I too have had, and
made, many pancakes and waffles in my lifetime. Pancakes are far easier to assemble. They only
require premade pancake mix, a stove, and a pan. Everyone has these things! A waffle iron, however,
is much harder to come by. Waffle irons also constrict creativity. All of your waffles are going to be in
whatever standard square or circular shape your waffle iron is. Pancakes can be made into any shape!
People even endeavor into pancake art, making

Juvenile Justice System And For Reducing Juvenile Crime Rates
I. INTRODUCTION Regardless of what nation an individual resides in, certain issues are universally
important. Examples include crime, economics, education, family, healthcare, homelessness, poverty,
and many others. The United States is now the world leader in its rate of incarceration. Over the past
25 years, juvenile crime has skyrocketed, with drug crimes, gang violence, school shootings, and other
violent acts being regularly featured in the news. During the past 10 years, nearly all 50 states have
overhauled their juvenile justice laws, allowing more youths to be tried as adults. However, in
addressing crime, there must be an effective balance between deterrence, prevention, and punishment.
This paper analyzes the juvenile justice system and the effectiveness of sentencing alternatives like
juvenile detention centers and shelters. Part II details the history of the juvenile justice system. In Part
III, sentencing alternatives like sentencing alternatives like juvenile detention centers and shelters are
examined. Lastly, this paper concludes with suggestions for improving the juvenile justice system and
for reducing juvenile crime rates.
II. HISTORY OF THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM Prior to the twentieth century, there were no
significant differences between the way adult criminals and juvenile offenders were treated by the
criminal justice system. Early prisons housed adults, juveniles, men, women, sane and insane, all
together. ( CJCJ: Intro to California s

The Tell Tale Heart
In the stories, The Tell Tale Heart , The Black Cat , and The Cask of Amontillado two of the stories
have unnamed narrators with one friend that has a named narrator that tell their point of view. But,
many of them are unreliable narrators and we cannot always trust what they say and think of other
people. Each of them have their own separate effects on the reader of the story and how the reader
interprets the narrative. The difference on how the teller of the story and how the reader of the story
understands it is what this passage will be talking about. We will be analyzing the effect that these
narrators have on reading starting with the effect of The Tell Tale Heart .
In The Tell Tale Heart the narrator is a young male that is taking care of an old man by living with him
as a roommate. This narrator (though is never said in the story) is suffering from a mental illness that
makes him paranoid. We know that he is crazy, and he proves that by trying to deny that he is crazy in
the very beginning, and then says that he can hear everything in heaven, the underworld, ... Show

The way that handles the situation shows that Montresor follows his family motto very much which is,
No one attacks me with impunity . He claims that he can name one thousand injuries that Fortunato
has placed upon him but, once Fortunato insulted his family, he snapped. Montresor then swore
revenge upon Fortunato and then took his time to plan for attack. He got the job done with extreme
precision, thought, and manipulation with no flaws. This is the reason why Montresor is the only
narrator out of all three stories to get away with his crime. Montresor s actions show that he is very
determined, cold, analytical, and, very vengeful when it is put to his mind. He is a reliable narrator he

Of Mice And Men By John Steinbeck
Have you ever wanted to pinch a babies chubby legs or cheeks? Phrases like You re so cute, I could
eat you up, or You re so fluffy I m gonna die, are expressions that individuals use in everyday life, but
do they genuinely want to eat someone, or die because they think they are cute and fluffy? Similarly,
why do individuals cry when exceedingly ecstatic, or laugh when nervous? In the popular literature
piece Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the main character Lennie loves his pet mouse so fully that
he pets it too hard and it dies (Steinbeck, 1994). In real life, majority of the individuals who
experience harmful urges do not actually inflict harm on the cute personal or animal, but the mere
thought or urge to do so is worth studying. Surprisingly, there is still not a huge deal of research on the
phenomena, however that is changing. These paradoxical impulses, like harming something enjoyable,
have recently been attaining spotlight in the psychological realm. Through the lens of evolutionary
psychology, it is easy to immediately think there is no adaptive purpose to harming something that
elicits positive emotions into one s life. Nonetheless, a handful of researchers have been suggesting an
actual adaptive purpose for these harmful urges exists. To begin, there is one particular study that
almost completely dominates this topic and will be the premise behind the connection of literature on
this fascinating topic. A research team at Yale University conducted a

Essay about The Juggler
The Juggler
I want to believe in faith and risk and a world where you can stand beneath the grey October sky and
flash your own colours through the air like a magician (218 221, p. 6). These beautiful lines constitute
the final conclusion of the short story, The Juggler , written by Ursula Hegi and published in 2001.
The story deals with themes such as beauty, letting go and being stuck in the past.
The short story takes place in Coeur d Alene in the first weekend of October. An unnamed first person
narrator tells the story of her daughter, Zoe and her boyfriend, Michael who have come to visit her. It
is the first time she meets Michael, who is a counsellor at the school where her daughter teaches. They

Other times I felt like I were eleven and she thirty (ll. 91 92, p. 3). The mother almost bursts into self
oscillation when she tells Michael about her memories with Zoe. This could lead to the conclusion that
Zoe is used to taking responsibility for other people and, seen from a homespun psychological point of
view, perhaps likes the fact that Michael reminds her of her mother in the way that he needs her.
Another result of the mother s loneliness and dependency on her daughter is the fact that she cannot
let her go. She lives in the past and loves the memories of a time she refuses to leave, nor can she ever
leave it unless she accepts the fact that Zoe is now a grown up. She has her own life now. The bird has
flown.
So maybe she should just handle her over to Michael. After all he is not a maniac killer or anything.
He seems rather nice and Zoe really loves him, but the narrator simply is too jealous to be happy for
her daughter, Zoe turns, smiling at him with so much light in her eyes that I have to look away (ll. 74
75, p. 3).
The writer leaves, in a very discrete but intelligent and awfully interesting way, many symbols and
details for further interpretation. For instance, a visual description of the narrator has been left out.
Therefore, she appears as a set of thoughts, which on one side means that the events that take place in
the story often are

Civil Rights Movement Essay
The Civil Rights Movement, also known as the American Civil Rights, was a mass movement during
the 1950s and 1960s. It was one of the most intricate social movements of mankind. The Civil Rights
Movement was a period where African Americans did not have the same equal rights or treatment as
the whites. Instead, African Americans were segregated from whites by not going to school together,
having to sit in the back of the bus, not being able to move freely, or not having the right to vote. Over
the past few decades, the Civil Rights Movement has evolved to restructure the equality amongst all
races across the world.

This completed the boycott victory which was one of the first Civil Rights Movement victory. Another
one of Martin Luther King Jr. non violent protest was the Little Rock Nine . The Little Rock Nine was
nine African American students who went to Little Rock Central High school and were treated very
unethically by many of the whites in the school. This gave rise to the Supreme Court s Decision in the
Brown V. Board of Education which later resulted in the desegregation of schools. This was another
one of the Civil Rights Movement that was successful. Back then, Martin Luther King Jr. and his non
violent protest required gathering of people to his reason. During this period, hundreds of thousands of
people marched in front of the Lincoln Memorial, to beg the federal government to support
desegregation. The movement was to reestablish the rights of citizenship guaranteed by the 14th and
15th amendments. The 14th Amendment of the constitution gave blacks equal protection under the
law and the 15th amendment granted blacks the right to vote. During the protest at the Lincoln
Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his, I have a dream speech, which helped change the Civil
Rights Movement. Ultimately, however, the movement changed the nation for the better and improved
lives of millions of Americans. This helped the African Americans to attain assurance in their
capability to form and to effect political change. They increased more pride in their cultural strengths

The Characteristics Of Growing Up In The 21st Century
Growing up in the 21st century, it can be very eye opening and intimidating. A majority of people will
start their day by sitting down and watching the news including stories about how seven just died from
a stabbing or another bomb was dropped in the Middle East. As I continue to grow up, I start to notice
the things that are not being talked about, and more specifically, the topics on news. They will very
rarely will pick a positive story over any negative one. The people that make the world a better place
are constantly lost in the shadows of the inconsiderate acts of inhumanity everyday. There is a small
amount of people who are praised or even recognized for their generous actions, however, there are
numerous people that should get this recognition. For children in this century, having a role model is
very important because that inspires them to become better people, to make a stand for what they
believe in, or believe they have a voice. When one becomes considered an admirable person, there are
numerous traits that make them who they are. Selflessness is almost always lost in society due to the
idea of fame and fortune. A selfless person stands out because they are putting others before
themselves, which is not common in the world. They believe other people are just as important as
them, and with selflessness comes a trickle of other traits like being compassionate and generous.
There are many other characteristics that can stand out in a person, and in addition to

One Man Two Guvnors, Womens Roles
Women s roles are often tokenistic in dramatic comedy. To what extent do you believe this to be the
case in relation to the play you are studying?
Some argue that women s roles are often tokenistic in dramatic comedy, since women often have
smaller or less important roles than male characters. This may apply to the female characters in One
Man, Two Guvnors depending on how you interpret the word tokenistic . The tokenism of a character
may be assessed in terms of the size and significance, or by analysing the stereotypes and complexity
of their characters.

Nevertheless, a woman dressing up as man is nothing out of the ordinary. It was very common in
comedic plays for women to be playing a man s role and this was used to demonstrate the difference
in hierarchy between men and women.
The complexity of Rachel s character differs within the play. On the one hand, Rachel is portrayed in a
male disguise showing she has independence as she has taken matters into her own hands, her
successful manipulation through disguise perhaps demonstrating her intelligence and how easily
women can dupe men. This could also suggest that she is not acting according to the social norms for
women in the 60s demonstrating that she doesn t fear people s views of her although she is a woman.

any power without the help of a man. Although she has decided to solve her problem herself, she has
had to dress up as a man to do so, thus showing that women s roles are often tokenistic. The motive
behind her plan was also for a man illustrating the length a women will go for a man. Had Rachel not

Symbols In Heart Of Darkness
Africa s Darkness Darkness refers to the evil acts of another person. These evil acts can symbolize
darkness in any situation, such as violence, discrimination, and other cruel acts that people experience
daily. Acts of darkness could cause harm to an individual physically or emotionally. In the novel,
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the word darkness is used to symbolize many events that
happened in the continent of Africa. Three events that symbolize the word darkness are the Europeans
cruel behaviors, Kurtz s selfishness, and Marlow s sexist statements. One event in the novel that
displayed darkness was when the Europeans were cruel to the Africans. The main character, Marlow,
went on a voyage to the Congo River. When Marlow arrived in Africa, he recognized that the Africans
were being treated in an evil manner. In the novel, Marlow states, They were dying slowly it was very
clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now nothing but
black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom (Conrad, 82). This

Kurtz or the Europeans, but it is also displayed in the main character, Marlow. Marlow would
occasionally speak sexist statements to himself, which shows that Marlow has a heart of darkness. In

their own, and there has never been anything like it, and never can be. It is too beautiful altogether,
and if they were to set it up it would go to pieces before the first sunset (Conrad, 76). This statement
from Marlow signifies that he is an individual who thinks that women cannot do anything on this earth
except make it worse. This definitely shows that Marlow has a heart of darkness. Therefore, darkness
is used throughout the novel because of Marlow s sexist

Using Titanium Dioxide as Photocatalyst to Reduce Pollution
Recent research shows that titanium dioxide can be used as a photocatalystic property to reduce
pollutants. This was first discovered by Fujishima and Honda in 1972, where the photocatalystic
properties of titanium dioxide were found to be applicable. It was shown that by converting ultraviolet
light energy, this compound acts as a catalyst to produce hydroxyl in the presence of moisture in the
air. Hydroxl then can oxidize and convert these harmful pollutants to HNO3. The reason that this is
useful is because nitrogen oxide is a common pollutant which has many adverse effects to society.
Nitrogen oxides may form into nitric acid which contributes to acid rain, and it also chemically reacts
to sunlight and changes into ozone which additionally has many adverse health effects for living
organisms and non living things alike. The health related issues are a major reason to reduce emissions
of NOx because although health is important, money is an issue as well. In California an independent
study conducted from 2005 to 2007 found that nearly 30,000 visits in the state were due to California
failing to meet both federal and state standards for PM and ozone. This data comes from statistics of
hospital reports for respiratory, cardiovascular, and asthma attacks. Even though the study estimates
were on the conservative side, it was estimated that the cost of un attainment to the state between that
3 year periods was 193 million dollars. And because the majority of residence

It Happened One Night Characteristics
Certain costume characteristics such as color, fabric, class, and silhouette where used to help portray
details about the characters in the movie It Happened One Night. Fabrics are an important
characteristic for costumes because it helps to distinguish quality and cost. Ellie was dressed in silk in
the beginning and end of the movie. When Ellie was with her father on his yacht and when she went
back home with her father she was wearing silk dresses on both occasions. This tells us that they are
from upper class and have money to be able to afford silk dresses. When Peter is introduced he is

2. Why do you want to participate in this global health trip? What are your goals, both personally and

What do you think will be your greatest challenge?
On this trip, I anticipate communicating with people of a different culture may be a challenge.
Although I do not speak Brazilian Portuguese, I know that we will have a bilingual interpreter with us
as well as NJMS students who speak both languages and thus, I know that the language barrier will
not be a big challenge. More than the language, I want to be contentious on this trip regarding
acknowledging my privileges and that I need to understand the Brazilian approach to medicine in the
context of their culture as well as the resources available to them. Furthermore, I understand that I
have limited knowledge and skills as a first year medical student and so can only provide basic
medical services at this time. Therefore, I am most apprehensive about effectively understanding and
communicating with the Brazilian community and recognizing that currently I am only able to provide
a limited amount of aid to these communities.
4. How do you plan on financially supporting this endeavor? (Are you willing to fundraise as a team,
as well as apply to the available scholarships?)
I fully intend to apply to any available scholarships in order to fund this trip. I am also looking
forward to working with other students going on this trip in order to organize fundraisers such as bake
sales and raffles. I also intend to start a GoFundMe page as well as seek out local businesses for
sponsorship. Finally,

Diversity in Higher Education
Compiling a Case Study In higher education, diversity has many meanings and even more
implications. The Encarta World English Dictionary defines diversity as, social inclusiveness ethnic
variety, as well as socioeconomic and gender variety, in a group, society, or institution (Soukhanov,
1999). As important as diversity is tolerance. Encarta World English Dictionary defines tolerance as,
acceptance of different views the acceptance of the differing views of other people, e.g. in religious or
political matters, and fairness toward the people who hold these different views (Soukhanov, 1999).
The following is a definition of diversity in higher education, description of the diversity of the

Promoting Diversity and Tolerance
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (2010), One in 10 students says that someone at school
has called them a derogatory word related to race, religion, ethnicity, disability, gender, or sexual
orientation in the past six months (as cited by Luther, Seeberger, Phelan, Simpson, p. 1, 2011). This
may be typical of traditional higher education organizations. However, online universities have the
unique ability to appeal to a wider population of students and staff without the common incidents of
racism, bigotry, and ageism experienced at brick and mortar universities. Following is a description of
how WGU appeals to a diverse student population and ensures a diverse population of faculty.
Student Stakeholders
There are multiple ways WGU appeals to a diverse student population. One way is through television
advertisement. Along with the main university, WGU has many state based universities that promote
their institution with local advertising. The advertising provided in each state varies based upon the
needs of the target students in that state. An example is an advertisement used by WGU Texas that
depicts graduation that features a pregnant mother who was able to finish her degree while being
pregnant and taking care of her other children. To add another element to the advertisement s appeal,
the pregnant mother is also African American.
Another method to increase diversity on the student side of the university

The Land Of Opportunity By Loewen
Millennials form the majority of the United States population, outnumbering Baby Boomers by eleven
million. Higher education is now more crucial for securing a middle class lifestyle than ever before,
yet for the majority, the cost for a bachelor s degree has become prohibitively expensive. In The Land
of Opportunity , Loewen contends that high school education methodically avoids a critical dialogue
of socioeconomic inequality in America. The social class to which a student belongs greatly influences
their capacity for upward mobility. If higher education is a requirement for improved economic status,
then students in the lower class are already disadvantaged. Loewen quotes Theodore Sizer, If you are
the child of low income parents, the chances are good that you will receive limited and often careless
attention from adults in your high school (qtd. in Loewen, 203). High school students cannot look to
the classroom to prepare them for real world power dynamics. If left to their own devices, adolescents
may be influenced by skewed allegories in fictional entertainment media. Parents must use
educational resources to prompt critical thinking about socioeconomic inequality in order to prepare
America s youth for securing their futures. Though there may be little to no exposure to these ideas in
the classroom, students will encounter them as they consume mass entertainment media. Social class
disparity has long been a reoccurring theme in film. Adolescents and young adults

Examples Of Romanticism In The Great Gatsby
The book of The Great Gatsby, by author F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a story that has two parts in the
philosophy of the characters way of living. There is the type of character that opposes the other one in
a certain way. There are many types of philosophies in the characters, but the philosophies of
Romanticism and Realism are represented many times in The Great Gatsby. Although they never
specifically mention it, several characters in Great Gatsby experience signs of a Romanticist
philosophy.
Romanticism is defined as a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement characterized chiefly by a
reaction against neoclassicism and an emphasis on the imagination and emotions, and marked
especially in English literature by sensibility and the use ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In pg 76, the philosophy of Romanticism can be inferred from her reaction after reading the letter and
getting as drunk as a monkey the night before her wedding, leaving her in a state of confusion and
anguish. This leaves her deciding in what to do, which then she marries Tom. Eventually, she regrets
taking this decision after having the choice of having either one. Another example of Romanticism
represented by her, is when she cries after Gatsby shows his variety of shirts in pg. 92. Again, Daisy
falls into Gatsby s trap of him trying to impress her with his wealth. After 5 years lost, she begins to
regret marrying Tom, and wishing she had spent that time with Gatsby, which was impossible to do,
caused by Gatsby s time in war and studies in Oxford. This reunion in Gatsby s mansion, makes both
of them fantasize that they are together and makes them believe that there is still hope to live together
happily as a couple. From here, they begin to have affairs and this makes the romance and belief
stronger, which then leads to Gatsby accepting to face the problem: Tom. He believes that things must
be done the respectful way by talking to him like adults, but Daisy opposes that idea. Here, Daisy
shows Romanticism again, while Gatsby is being realistic. Unfortunately, the confrontation between
the love triangle leads to Gatsby s assassination after Myrtle, Tom s mistress and George Wilson s
wife, is hit by Gatsby s yellow car that Daisy was

The Major Elements and Dimensions of Culture in Italy Essay
The Major Elements and Dimensions of Culture in Italy
Introduction
The world is made up of over one hundred countries. Those countries are what make the world a
melting pot of diversity, creativity, productivity, and fun. Of all the countries a person could explore,
one would like to present an introduction of Italy. This paper is intended to give the reader insight on
the culture, business, and international relations of Italy. Those International relations are specifically
in comparison to the United States. Both countries rely on one another. For instance, it is common to
see Italians sporting their American made clothing, and it is common to see Americans admiring their
Italian made art. Their codependence of one another is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
153). Those rates are partially because children who are between the ages of 6 and 18 are required to
attend school (Croce et al, 2009, p. 153).
Religion
Another important, demographical element to discuss is religion. The predominant religion in Italy is
Catholicism (Garelli, 2007). The Roman Catholic headquarters are in Rome, Italy, also known as the
Vatican City. The church is directed by bishops. Almost 70% of the people who practice Catholicism
live in European countries (Saenz, 2005). It is interesting because Garelli stated that even though a
majority of Italians identify with Catholicism, they do not practice it regularly (2007). He stated that
the practice of Catholicism is becoming a minority in Italy (Garelli, 2007). Religion and government.
In terms of how business and the government are affected by religions in Italy, the country allows for
the freedom of worship to all people. Italy, unlike America, does not have a strict adherence to the
separation of church and state. The government financially supports the Catholic Church at the request
of the elected government representatives (Merriman, 2009). Even the students are allowed to attend
voluntary religion classes (Merriman, 2009). One factor that assists the country with their religious
relations is the agreement made between many religions and the state (Merriman, 2009). One religious
group excluded from such agreement is Muslims because

Historical Characters Of The Astell, Galileo, And Florence...
You want to believe it or not, but it was so. It was a raining, dull summer day, not typical for South
Jersey climate. I was rocking in my rocking chair on the porch while reading my Western Civilization
history book. I was on the 15 chapter, reading about outstanding historical characters of the 17
century. I don t know if it was relaxing historical book, or atmosphere, created by the weather, but I
felt how I was drowning in sleep. Suddenly, I heard the loud noise coming from our garage where my
crazy brother was recently working on some mysterious machine. Hearing that noise, I rushed into the
garage where I found my brother screaming that he invented the time machine. At first, I thought it

Astell s works inspired many women to follow her ideas. Mary wanted to create the institution that
would be oriented towards women personal development, where they would be able to become self
sufficient beings, both emotionally and intellectually. Her feminist innovation was to recommend that
women should educate themselves, look for ways to support themselves, and cultivate friendships
with other women rather than seeking shelter in the marriage and accepting their husbands as the
absolute authorities. Mary Astell and many other feminist philosopher and writers of the
Enlightenment period spoke out and made their voices heard on the issue of women being educated.
(Sowaal, A).
Making some noise, the time machine produced the bright light, through which I saw the feminine

What Is An Example Of Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Cognitive Dissonance Theory, or CDT for short, is an objective communication theory that was
developed by Leon Festinger. Cognitive Dissonance is defined as The distressing mental state caused
by inconsistency between a person s two beliefs or a belief and an action. (Griffin, Ledbetter, et al).
An example of cognitive dissonance would be a health conscious smoker, this person knows that
smoking is bad for them, but they still smoke because they enjoy it. Their desire to be healthy
conflicts with their smoking, this conflict places them in a distressing mental state, a state of cognitive
dissonance. Festinger provides three hypotheses for CDT: 1.) Selective exposure prevents dissonance.
2.) Post decision dissonance creates need for reassurance. and 3.) Minimal justification for action
induces attitude change.

Paramedics working in the prehospital environment have traditionally used the gold standard practice

Aeschylus And Lucretius Essay
To start this free write off, I will begin by noting that both Aeschylus and Lucretius did a wonderful
job at portraying the death of Iphigenia and expanding on the emotions of all persons involved.
However, I believe the two did this in almost very different yet similar way. Aeschylus has a very
passionate and poetic feel to his writing, conveying the sorrow and intensity in a very dramatic way;
using a wonderful array of descriptive and emotional words to set the scene. On the other hand, you
have Lucretius, who was very detailed and straightforward with everything happening, using the
description of the scene itself to portray the emotions and explain what is happening. In the following
paragraphs, I would like to attempt to analyze these differences further. ... Show more content on

emotion, yet manages to tell the reader exactly what is happening and lets them feel the tragedy. For
me the most emotional lines are sinless woman, sinfully foredone, a parent felled her on her bridal day
, this again lacks a lot of emotion but successfully implies them. My favorite line is when he calls
Iphigenia a sacrificial beast, in a similar manor to Aeschylus calling her a goat. I think to call one style
more emotional than the other is a bit of a stretch. Aeschylus made the you practically feel what was
happening, leaving the rest of the passage to be envisioned by the reader with all the emotions to he

practically obvious emotions. Overall, I felt more invested in Lucretius writings than Aeschylus,
purely because I knew exactly what was happening versus Aeschylus where I felt more emotions for
Iphigenia but there was a bit of ambiguity for the situation she was

Indentured Servants vs. Black Slaves
The Stepping Stones of Labor in America Throughout time, in all places, there is an upper class and a
lower class. During the 16th to 19th century in America people came from all over Europe. People
from Europe found America as an escape from their life; a new start. Some could not afford to take a
boat ride across the Atlantic with their whole family. Because of this, some people became indentured
servants. Later on, the South revolutionized America by bringing in black slaves and getting rid of
indentured servitude. Slaves generated the economy for the South, but was also the main cause of the
civil war. Both slaves and indentured servants were treated badly, however, black slaves were much
more expensive and had to work for life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the indentured servants had did their time depending how long their contract was, they were
given money, land and often a sustainable job. Black slaves were permanently slaves and didn t have
as much hope as indentured servants because they had no family and they knew that they were stuck
living their life the way it was forever. Also, indentured servants often had learned some economically
valuable skills, so when their contract was up, they were more prepared for the outside world, while
black slaves were not usually and were not let out. Indentured servants were slaves and dehumanized
during their time of their contract, but often had a better life because of what they learned from being
a servant and their reward. While both slaves and servants typically did similar work, slaves were
bought and put into work whereas indentured servants signed a contract and the owner didn t give up
any money value until the end of contract. During this time the cost of a black slave was about
130,000 dollars. This was a lot higher because this is when there was no more indentured servitude
and the South s economy relied on black slaves for cotton. Paying 130,000 dollars for a slave seems
like a bad investment, but they got the slaves for life and the slaves could reproduce and have more
slaves in the future. The biggest reason why black slaves were a better

Why Is Mahatma Gandhi Unjustified
You must be the change you wish to see in the world Mahatma Gandhi (source from Mahatma Gandhi
Quotes. ). Many assassinations occur due to political, religious, and cultural reasons. Some
assassinations occur without explanation, or with explanations that sound illogical or ridiculous. On
January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot three times by his assassin, Nathuram Godse. Gandhi
was a man who only wanted what was best for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and its
people were what motivated him to do what he did. He was the leading figure responsible for India
achieving independence, and he wanted to see a free and united country. Some may argue that he was
not a good politician however, having to put politics within every view can sometimes be too much,
which can cause arguments, leading to chaos. The first reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified was
because Gandhi wanted only what was best for for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and
its people were what motivated him to do what he did. An example of him wanting what was best for
his fellow Indians is Gandhi leading several campaigns in which he intended to make public of what
unfortunate situation Indians were in inside their Country. This include the protest against the South
African government s refusal to allow for Indians to vote. He was significant to the the founding of the
Natal Indian Congress in 1894. This is an organization that became center in 1894 and helped political
resistance develop over a seven year period which began in 1906 (All stated in the article, Great Soul:
Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India. ). Another example was that in future years, is in 1913,
Gandhi negotiated with colonial laborers with Jan Smuts. Smuts was an Afrikaner (Afrikaans speaking
person in South Africa, especially one descended from the Dutch and Huguenot settlers of the 17th
century) and a racist who later became colonial secretary after the Boer War. The final decision
between the two managed to gain Indians rights by a little (All stated in the article, The Problem with
Purity. ) The second reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified because he was the leading figure

Marquis de Layafette
Marquis de Lafayette Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette, Marquis de La
Fayette, a wealthy French nobleman, played a quietly prominent role in America s struggle for
independence from the British. La Fayette s unwavering dedication to the pursuit of liberty, his skill as
military officer, his ability to secure vital resources, and his impressive connections to the French
Royal family and other key players of this era made him an invaluable asset in the American
Revolution, and a significant piece of the French Revolution.
La Fayette was born on September 6, 1757 in the Castle of Chavagnac, in the southern region of
France to a distinguished noble family. His lineage was already renowned throughout France for ...

In fact, the bond was so strong, that at the Battle of Valley Forge in the winter of 1777, when a cluster
of jealous officers interested in trying to have a sentiment developed against Washington to have
Congress relieve him of the command of the Continental Army, they were unable to gain the support
of Lafayette, who in turn wrote a long letter to Washington in which he pledged his loyalty to the
General. Washington replied to Lafayette in a letter that was marked by his sincere appreciation. In
due course the proposed scheme of the few officers failed, as it was doomed to fail from the
beginning. The soldiers and officers at Valley Forge were fiercely loyal to their commander, and the
members of Congress realized that Washington was a strong and patriotic leader.
Following the harsh and bitter winter in Valley Forge, Lafayette kept the colonists spirits high and
burnished his credentials as an intelligent leader whilst helping to draw more French resources to the
colonial side. In May 1778, he outsmarted the British soldiers sent to capture him at Bunker Hill
which was later renamed Lafayette Hill and rallied a Continental attack at Monmouth Courthouse to
force a stalemate. Lafayette repeatedly traveled back and forth to France to press Louis XVI for more
aid, and in return he assumed increased military responsibility upon his return to battle. As
commander of the

Should Welfare Be More Charity Impact On Homeless, Hungry,...
Driving to the mall one Saturday morning, there was an older gentleman on the corner with his small
family, Wife and young son, with a cardboard sign that read, HOMELESS, NEED FOOD, MONEY
FOR DOCTOR BILLS. The man was rugged and could obviously use help. His right leg had been
amputated, so he definitely needed assistance. One may wonder in this instance, Where are the
charities? The groups are nowhere to be found. There should be more charity impact on homeless,
hungry, and such because of instances like this. For poor or less fortunate families, philanthropic
groups should finance programs such as medical assistance, housing, and food. First, philanthropic
groups should finance programs for medical assistance. While most middle and upper class workers
can afford health care for themselves and their children, the lower class families cannot even fathom
the thought of being committed to a nowadays expensive payment because when they go out and look
for insurance, the monthly payments exceed the amount that the family pays for its rent in two months
time. There are many charity foundations that can help those unable to afford insurance, but one in
specific is the Charity Care Policy at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. It is a
local charity organization that benefits the less fortunate. If a patient is below one hundred percent of
the poverty guidelines, which is he or she is eligible to have his or her medical expenses taken care of

The Romantic Works Of John Keats, Percy Shelley, And...
The romantic period, lasting from the late 18th to the early 19th century, followed the Age of Reason.
During this time people had an individualized, free, liberal, and imaginative attitude towards life.
Literature itself was full of introspection, emotion, passion, sublimity, beauty, and spontaneity, with
subjects such as humankind, the soul, flowers, the common people and more. Of all of the Romantic
values and subjects, the beauty, creativity, and morals of nature is what truly inspired human
imagination, and thus literature of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The underlying theme
of nature that is persistent through romantic poetry creates a bond between the poet and the common
man through short poems that express personal emotion that all can feel, as we all are connected to
nature. This can be seen through the works of John Keats, Percy Shelley, and William Blake. Percy
Shelley was a joyful and optimistic Romantic poet of the time who was concerned with the beauty and
passions of nature, creativity, and imagination. Nature is an ever present theme in his poetry as he
feels closely connected to nature s power. Ode to the West Wind is one of his most notable poems, and
one that truly exemplifies the idea of expressing personal emotion and feeling by using metaphors
from nature. He uses the west wind to symbolize the power of nature and the imagination that was
thus inspired by nature. It was almost even an agent for change. In the poem, the wild West wind

What s Surprising In The Wizard Of Oz
In 1939, Kansan teenager Dorothy Gale (portrayed by Judy Garland) decides to run away from home
to protect her little dog, Toto, from her heinous neighbor, Almira Gulch. Before getting very far,
Dorothy sees the error in her ways and attempts to return home before being swept into a strange
world of colorful characters by a tornado. Realizing that there is only one way to return home, she sets
off with a group of her newfound friends on the adventure of a lifetime.
Considered to be the most popular films of all time, the incredible tale of Dorothy must be historic for
many reasons. One of the most distinct reasons for the popularity of this film is the director Victor
Fleming s use of film. The movie as a whole was shot in two different films: ... Show more content on

One societal theme that this film emphasizes is the insufficiency of adulthood. While most of us like
to believe that becoming an adult gives us all the answers, it doesn t. Even in adulthood, many of us
fail tot live up to the expectations of others and ourselves. Many adults are just as powerless as they
were in their childhood. Take Auntie Em as an example. She can t do anything to prevent Toto from
being taken away. While Dorothy can t comprehend how she d let Toto be sent to slaughter, Auntie
Em knows she doesn t have the power to protect him. As an adult, she realized she had to follow the
rules of society. This happens again later on at the most crucial moment of the film. After defeating the
Wicked Witch, we see that the great Wizard of Oz is a charlatan and just as helpless as teenaged
Dorothy. These episodes speak to the fallibility of grown ups in real life. While society tells us that
wisdom comes with age, we are often times just as naïve as our childhood

Rhetorical Analysis Of Violent Media Is Good For Kids

A Rhetorical Analysis of Violent Media is Good for Kids
From early childhood, parents, teachers, and other adults instill in us that violence is bad and
unethical. We can all agree that we should avoid certain forms of violent behavior if possible;
however, it is incorrect to assume that all forms of violence is bad. In his article Violent Media is
Good For Kids , Gerald Jones argues that creative violence such as gory video games, Comic books,
and play fighting give children tools to master rage and actually help more kids than they hurt. What
the author is saying here is correct because children use these types of influences in imaginary play at
a young age, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the Incredible Hulk was a ticking time bomb and completely out of control he was a sort of
Jekel and Mr. Hyde character. Timid geek, gone raging goliath if you must. Yes, he was out of control
and frightened tearing up everything in his path, but on the other side of that, he was also a caring
good hearted person that got a good enough handle on his destructive side that he became a hero and
started working with the Avengers. Jones is wrong to imply that the only reason these comics were
good for him was due to the violence alone. This was not a character like the Joker who just tortured
and corrupted people for a laugh and killed mercilessly, there is a reason the good guy always wins in
these comics, and that is to appeal to the children reading them and to instill that type of behavior.
Everybody loves a winner so when they make Batman or Superman triumph over The Joker or Lex
Luthor the authors are instilling the value that good triumphs over evil to their audience. This means
that while yes, they were good for him because they were violent and juvenile; they were also good
because they still had those messages of conquering the demon, or lose yourself but find yourself
again. Jones goes on to persuade us by using his son as an example.
I have watched my son living the same story transforming himself into a bloodthirsty dinosaur to
embolden himself for the plunge into preschool, a Power Ranger to muscle through a

  • 2. Summary Of The Poem Leis Spears Now that the holidays are approaching, a certain long lived adage makes its yearly debut: the feeling of giving is better than the feeling of receiving. Of course, it is generally said in the context of gift exchange. However, who is to say it cannot be a life lesson? Far too often, people are so very involved in themselves that they lose sight of what truly matters, such as family or even community. They believe their own problems to be far too great to waste time on helping others, which is exactly the common schema Edgar Lee Masters refuted in his poem Lois Spears as a part of his collection of poems, Spoon River Anthology. Lois Spears is a woman who, despite having to live without sight, is incredibly happy with how she lived her life. She dedicated herself to serving others and joyfully did so; her story did not convey an ounce of spite or bitterness. Masters ultimately wrote the poem Lois Spears in order to display how looking away from one s own hindrances or troubles and dedicating oneself to improving the lives of others can bring true happiness. Right at from the start, Masters begins Lois story with an epitaph like statement regarding who she is in relation to others: ... [d]aughter of Willard Fluke, / [w]ife of Cyrus Spears, / [m]other of Myrtle and Virgil Spears... Rather than beginning to describe herself, Masters purposefully has Lois speak about others before herself in order to show how Lois puts the needs of others before her own. She ... • 3. The Political Problems Of Burma Burma, also known as Myanmar, has been independent since 1948 and is involved in one of the world s longest on going civil war. The British and Japanese occupation from 1924 to 1948 exacerbated tensions between ethnic groups. The country is also characterised by its unstable political regime, mainly military ones, and its diverse ethnic background. The main ethnic group are the Bamar and occupy 60% of the land (Laoutsides and Ware, 2016). But no less than 135 ethnicities occupy the 40% left. Identity in the country is seen as the main explanation as to why the country cannot solve its political problems and is in constant conflict. We can wonder however to what extent can the conflict be understood by solely focusing on identity. If identity is an important factor in the emergence of tensions it is only one facet of the problem. Alternative theories to the identity explanation on the causes of civil war are polarised between grievance and greed theories (Ballentine and Nitzschke, 2003). However, it is possible to have a complete understanding of the causes and dynamics of ethnic conflict when combining these two set of theories together. Conflict arises from the grievance of an ethnic group but is then maintained by the actors greed. First, we will see the limits of identity theory in explaining ethnic conflicts using the example of Burma. Then we will see how grievances can initiate conflict and how the greed theory explains why it then persists. Finally, we will apply our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The World s Overpopulation Problem Essay Have you ever wondered what earth would be like in the near future with over 10 billion people from 7 billion? A newspaper source from Population Peril states that there are 210,000 new people everyday and by 2050 that there will be roughly 9.6 billion people (McClatchy). How are we going to prevent the disastrous measure of pollution, diseases, extinction of resources, more poverty, people and etc.? As the world s overpopulation problem should be changed to prevent future severe issues. First off, the proponent states that the one future major problem that will ineffably get worse is epidemic or outbreaks of disease and viruses. The more people on earth the higher chance diseases will evolve and travel faster. As Keiji Fukuda, then the assistant director general for health security at the World Health Organization (WHO), said in 2013, The world is not ready for a large, severe outbreak. (Angell). Some new and old epidemic diseases that will get worse with more people is Zika (mosquito), Cholera (sewage), Ebola, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome). Another virus is the bird flu that is even a further severe disease problem as well as anything airborne. The New York Times, Michael T. Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, wrote, Even more than these viruses, we should be afraid of a planet wide catastrophe caused by influenza. • 7. It Was Awful And Bitter When The Allies And The Central It was awful and bitter when the Allies and the Central Powers clashed and unleashed their military power at the war front in World War I. World War I also known as the war to all end wars, or the Great War occurred between June 28, 1914, to November 11, 1918. The war left over thirty eight million civilians and militaries casualties. Much work was needed to get the European countries back together after the war. In the book Fear written by Gabriel Chevallier, the narrator shows the unforgettable memories a war can bring. The main character Jean Dartemont is supposed to be enthusiastic to go to war like many other young nineteen year old French men at the time. Emotionally the soldiers went off to work feeling unbeatable with a strong nationalistic pride. However, they soon realized that all their emotions would not be able to conqueror the evils the war had to offer. One of the most horrific memories for Jean was when he spoke about the different type of corpse he saw while they were on their way to another town. They had crouched down on their knees under a pile of debris. When they got up they saw a decapitated head of a soldier who probably died days ago. Jean is shaken up by this horrific site by saying that when he looked at the man s face he could fell like the man was blaming him for his death. He reminisces on all the horrific events emotionally that left him scarred, however, he goes on to say that this was the most horrible impression that he could take away from the war front. Jean later goes on to describe the agony and numerous positions where the corpse would lay. Personally, as the reader, I could really fell the suffering of the dying soldiers when Jean describes the glass eyes and twisted mouths of the dead bodies in the trench . This evidence took a toll on Jean because he leaves the scene in disgust and without hope of a return home. Lastly, the war ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Juvenile Justice System And For Reducing Juvenile Crime Rates I. INTRODUCTION Regardless of what nation an individual resides in, certain issues are universally important. Examples include crime, economics, education, family, healthcare, homelessness, poverty, and many others. The United States is now the world leader in its rate of incarceration. Over the past 25 years, juvenile crime has skyrocketed, with drug crimes, gang violence, school shootings, and other violent acts being regularly featured in the news. During the past 10 years, nearly all 50 states have overhauled their juvenile justice laws, allowing more youths to be tried as adults. However, in addressing crime, there must be an effective balance between deterrence, prevention, and punishment. This paper analyzes the juvenile justice system and the effectiveness of sentencing alternatives like juvenile detention centers and shelters. Part II details the history of the juvenile justice system. In Part III, sentencing alternatives like sentencing alternatives like juvenile detention centers and shelters are examined. Lastly, this paper concludes with suggestions for improving the juvenile justice system and for reducing juvenile crime rates. II. The Tell Tale Heart In the stories, The Tell Tale Heart , The Black Cat , and The Cask of Amontillado two of the stories have unnamed narrators with one friend that has a named narrator that tell their point of view. But, many of them are unreliable narrators and we cannot always trust what they say and think of other people. Each of them have their own separate effects on the reader of the story and how the reader interprets the narrative. The difference on how the teller of the story and how the reader of the story understands it is what this passage will be talking about. We will be analyzing the effect that these narrators have on reading starting with the effect of The Tell Tale Heart . In The Tell Tale Heart the narrator is a young male that is taking care of an old man by living with him as a roommate. This narrator (though is never said in the story) is suffering from a mental illness that makes him paranoid. • 11. Of Mice And Men By John Steinbeck Have you ever wanted to pinch a babies chubby legs or cheeks? Phrases like You re so cute, I could eat you up, or You re so fluffy I m gonna die, are expressions that individuals use in everyday life, but do they genuinely want to eat someone, or die because they think they are cute and fluffy? Similarly, why do individuals cry when exceedingly ecstatic, or laugh when nervous? In the popular literature piece Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the main character Lennie loves his pet mouse so fully that he pets it too hard and it dies (Steinbeck, 1994). In real life, majority of the individuals who experience harmful urges do not actually inflict harm on the cute personal or animal, but the mere thought or urge to do so is worth studying. Surprisingly, there is still not a huge deal of research on the phenomena, however that is changing. These paradoxical impulses, like harming something enjoyable, have recently been attaining spotlight in the psychological realm. Through the lens of evolutionary psychology, it is easy to immediately think there is no adaptive purpose to harming something that elicits positive emotions into one s life. Nonetheless, a handful of researchers have been suggesting an actual adaptive purpose for these harmful urges exists. To begin, there is one particular study that almost completely dominates this topic and will be the premise behind the connection of literature on this fascinating topic. Essay about The Juggler The Juggler I want to believe in faith and risk and a world where you can stand beneath the grey October sky and flash your own colours through the air like a magician (218 221, p. 6). These beautiful lines constitute the final conclusion of the short story, The Juggler , written by Ursula Hegi and published in 2001. The story deals with themes such as beauty, letting go and being stuck in the past. The short story takes place in Coeur d Alene in the first weekend of October. Other times I felt like I were eleven and she thirty (ll. 91 92, p. 3). The mother almost bursts into self oscillation when she tells Michael about her memories with Zoe. This could lead to the conclusion that Zoe is used to taking responsibility for other people and, seen from a homespun psychological point of view, perhaps likes the fact that Michael reminds her of her mother in the way that he needs her. Another result of the mother s loneliness and dependency on her daughter is the fact that she cannot let her go. She lives in the past and loves the memories of a time she refuses to leave, nor can she ever leave it unless she accepts the fact that Zoe is now a grown up. She has her own life now. The bird has flown. So maybe she should just handle her over to Michael. After all he is not a maniac killer or anything. He seems rather nice and Zoe really loves him, but the narrator simply is too jealous to be happy for her daughter, Zoe turns, smiling at him with so much light in her eyes that I have to look away (ll. 74 75, p. 3). The writer leaves, in a very discrete but intelligent and awfully interesting way, many symbols and details for further interpretation. For instance, a visual description of the narrator has been left out. Therefore, she appears as a set of thoughts, which on one side means that the events that take place in the story often are ... It was one of the most intricate social movements of mankind. The Civil Rights Movement was a period where African Americans did not have the same equal rights or treatment as the whites. Instead, African Americans were segregated from whites by not going to school together, having to sit in the back of the bus, not being able to move freely, or not having the right to vote. The Little Rock Nine was nine African American students who went to Little Rock Central High school and were treated very unethically by many of the whites in the school. This gave rise to the Supreme Court s Decision in the Brown V. Board of Education which later resulted in the desegregation of schools. This was another one of the Civil Rights Movement that was successful. Back then, Martin Luther King Jr. and his non violent protest required gathering of people to his reason. During this period, hundreds of thousands of people marched in front of the Lincoln Memorial, to beg the federal government to support desegregation. The movement was to reestablish the rights of citizenship guaranteed by the 14th and 15th amendments. The 14th Amendment of the constitution gave blacks equal protection under the law and the 15th amendment granted blacks the right to vote. During the protest at the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his, I have a dream speech, which helped change the Civil Rights Movement. A majority of people will start their day by sitting down and watching the news including stories about how seven just died from a stabbing or another bomb was dropped in the Middle East. As I continue to grow up, I start to notice the things that are not being talked about, and more specifically, the topics on news. They will very rarely will pick a positive story over any negative one. The people that make the world a better place are constantly lost in the shadows of the inconsiderate acts of inhumanity everyday. There is a small amount of people who are praised or even recognized for their generous actions, however, there are numerous people that should get this recognition. For children in this century, having a role model is very important because that inspires them to become better people, to make a stand for what they believe in, or believe they have a voice. When one becomes considered an admirable person, there are numerous traits that make them who they are. Selflessness is almost always lost in society due to the idea of fame and fortune. A selfless person stands out because they are putting others before themselves, which is not common in the world. This may apply to the female characters in One Man, Two Guvnors depending on how you interpret the word tokenistic . The tokenism of a character may be assessed in terms of the size and significance, or by analysing the stereotypes and complexity of their characters. The complexity of Rachel s character differs within the play. On the one hand, Rachel is portrayed in a male disguise showing she has independence as she has taken matters into her own hands, her successful manipulation through disguise perhaps demonstrating her intelligence and how easily women can dupe men. This could also suggest that she is not acting according to the social norms for women in the 60s demonstrating that she doesn t fear people s views of her although she is a woman. She demonstrates her strength and independence as she takes matters into her own hands I ll take two hundred in cash and acts in a violent way Rachel slaps Francis , portraying the growing power of women. On the other hand, Bean could have done this to project the message that women cannot hold any power without the help of a man. Although she has decided to solve her problem herself, she has had to dress up as a man to do so, thus showing that women s roles are often tokenistic. The motive behind her plan was also for a man illustrating the length a women will go for a man. Had Rachel not dressed up as a man maybe she would not have gotten so far, her success in doing so ... • 18. Symbols In Heart Of Darkness Africa s Darkness Darkness refers to the evil acts of another person. These evil acts can symbolize darkness in any situation, such as violence, discrimination, and other cruel acts that people experience daily. Acts of darkness could cause harm to an individual physically or emotionally. In the novel, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the word darkness is used to symbolize many events that happened in the continent of Africa. Three events that symbolize the word darkness are the Europeans cruel behaviors, Kurtz s selfishness, and Marlow s sexist statements. One event in the novel that displayed darkness was when the Europeans were cruel to the Africans. The main character, Marlow, went on a voyage to the Congo River. When Marlow arrived in Africa, he recognized that the Africans were being treated in an evil manner. In the novel, Marlow states, They were dying slowly it was very clear. It is too beautiful altogether, and if they were to set it up it would go to pieces before the first sunset (Conrad, 76). • 19. Using Titanium Dioxide as Photocatalyst to Reduce Pollution Recent research shows that titanium dioxide can be used as a photocatalystic property to reduce pollutants. This was first discovered by Fujishima and Honda in 1972, where the photocatalystic properties of titanium dioxide were found to be applicable. It was shown that by converting ultraviolet light energy, this compound acts as a catalyst to produce hydroxyl in the presence of moisture in the air. Hydroxl then can oxidize and convert these harmful pollutants to HNO3. The reason that this is useful is because nitrogen oxide is a common pollutant which has many adverse effects to society. Nitrogen oxides may form into nitric acid which contributes to acid rain, and it also chemically reacts to sunlight and changes into ozone which additionally has many adverse health effects for living organisms and non living things alike. The health related issues are a major reason to reduce emissions of NOx because although health is important, money is an issue as well. In California an independent study conducted from 2005 to 2007 found that nearly 30,000 visits in the state were due to California failing to meet both federal and state standards for PM and ozone. This data comes from statistics of hospital reports for respiratory, cardiovascular, and asthma attacks. Higher education is now more crucial for securing a middle class lifestyle than ever before, yet for the majority, the cost for a bachelor s degree has become prohibitively expensive. In The Land of Opportunity , Loewen contends that high school education methodically avoids a critical dialogue of socioeconomic inequality in America. The social class to which a student belongs greatly influences their capacity for upward mobility. If higher education is a requirement for improved economic status, then students in the lower class are already disadvantaged. Loewen quotes Theodore Sizer, If you are the child of low income parents, the chances are good that you will receive limited and often careless attention from adults in your high school (qtd. in Loewen, 203). High school students cannot look to the classroom to prepare them for real world power dynamics. If left to their own devices, adolescents may be influenced by skewed allegories in fictional entertainment media. Parents must use educational resources to prompt critical thinking about socioeconomic inequality in order to prepare America s youth for securing their futures. Though there may be little to no exposure to these ideas in the classroom, students will encounter them as they consume mass entertainment media. Interesting enough, this retail giant would eventually close its doors and become known to many as one of American retailing s great failures (Romero, 2013, p. 31). The thought that this small Richmond based retailer would soon become a great success only to later end up as one of America s great retail failure. Wurtzel was an entrepreneur from New York. He was on his way to North Carolina on vacation, when he stopped in Richmond, Virginia to get a haircut. During a conversation between Wurtzel and the barber, he was told that the first television station had just opened less than a year ago in Richmond. But, in 1975, taking on expansion too quickly almost caused the company to file bankruptcy. To prevent going bankrupt, the company decided to scale back on the number of unprofitable outlets by closing or selling them. Then in the late 70 s the business began to make a comeback. It grew rapidly so much so that the company had fifty three superstore by 1983 and thirty seven smaller electronic stores (Romero, 2013, p. 32). • 42. Why Is Mahatma Gandhi Unjustified You must be the change you wish to see in the world Mahatma Gandhi (source from Mahatma Gandhi Quotes. ). Many assassinations occur due to political, religious, and cultural reasons. Some assassinations occur without explanation, or with explanations that sound illogical or ridiculous. On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot three times by his assassin, Nathuram Godse. Gandhi was a man who only wanted what was best for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and its people were what motivated him to do what he did. He was the leading figure responsible for India achieving independence, and he wanted to see a free and united country. Some may argue that he was not a good politician however, having to put politics within every view can sometimes be too much, which can cause arguments, leading to chaos. The first reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified was because Gandhi wanted only what was best for for his fellow Indians, and his love for his country and its people were what motivated him to do what he did. An example of him wanting what was best for his fellow Indians is Gandhi leading several campaigns in which he intended to make public of what unfortunate situation Indians were in inside their Country. This include the protest against the South African government s refusal to allow for Indians to vote. He was significant to the the founding of the Natal Indian Congress in 1894. This is an organization that became center in 1894 and helped political resistance develop over a seven year period which began in 1906 (All stated in the article, Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India. ). Another example was that in future years, is in 1913, Gandhi negotiated with colonial laborers with Jan Smuts. Smuts was an Afrikaner (Afrikaans speaking person in South Africa, especially one descended from the Dutch and Huguenot settlers of the 17th century) and a racist who later became colonial secretary after the Boer War. The final decision between the two managed to gain Indians rights by a little (All stated in the article, The Problem with Purity. ) The second reason why Gandhi s death was unjustified because he was the leading figure responsible for gaining India s ... In fact, the bond was so strong, that at the Battle of Valley Forge in the winter of 1777, when a cluster of jealous officers interested in trying to have a sentiment developed against Washington to have Congress relieve him of the command of the Continental Army, they were unable to gain the support of Lafayette, who in turn wrote a long letter to Washington in which he pledged his loyalty to the General. Washington replied to Lafayette in a letter that was marked by his sincere appreciation. In due course the proposed scheme of the few officers failed, as it was doomed to fail from the beginning. The soldiers and officers at Valley Forge were fiercely loyal to their commander, and the members of Congress realized that Washington was a strong and patriotic leader. Following the harsh and bitter winter in Valley Forge, Lafayette kept the colonists spirits high and burnished his credentials as an intelligent leader whilst helping to draw more French resources to the colonial side. In May 1778, he outsmarted the British soldiers sent to capture him at Bunker Hill which was later renamed Lafayette Hill and rallied a Continental attack at Monmouth Courthouse to force a stalemate. Driving to the mall one Saturday morning, there was an older gentleman on the corner with his small family, Wife and young son, with a cardboard sign that read, HOMELESS, NEED FOOD, MONEY FOR DOCTOR BILLS. The man was rugged and could obviously use help. His right leg had been amputated, so he definitely needed assistance. One may wonder in this instance, Where are the charities? The groups are nowhere to be found. There should be more charity impact on homeless, hungry, and such because of instances like this. For poor or less fortunate families, philanthropic groups should finance programs such as medical assistance, housing, and food. First, philanthropic groups should finance programs for medical assistance. While most middle and upper class workers can afford health care for themselves and their children, the lower class families cannot even fathom the thought of being committed to a nowadays expensive payment because when they go out and look for insurance, the monthly payments exceed the amount that the family pays for its rent in two months time. There are many charity foundations that can help those unable to afford insurance, but one in specific is the Charity Care Policy at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. It is a local charity organization that benefits the less fortunate. If a patient is below one hundred percent of the poverty guidelines, which is he or she is eligible to have his or her medical expenses taken care of for a ten ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Romantic Works Of John Keats, Percy Shelley, And... The romantic period, lasting from the late 18th to the early 19th century, followed the Age of Reason. During this time people had an individualized, free, liberal, and imaginative attitude towards life. Literature itself was full of introspection, emotion, passion, sublimity, beauty, and spontaneity, with subjects such as humankind, the soul, flowers, the common people and more. Of all of the Romantic values and subjects, the beauty, creativity, and morals of nature is what truly inspired human imagination, and thus literature of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The underlying theme of nature that is persistent through romantic poetry creates a bond between the poet and the common man through short poems that express personal emotion that all can feel, as we all are connected to nature. This can be seen through the works of John Keats, Percy Shelley, and William Blake. Percy Shelley was a joyful and optimistic Romantic poet of the time who was concerned with the beauty and passions of nature, creativity, and imagination. Nature is an ever present theme in his poetry as he feels closely connected to nature s power. Ode to the West Wind is one of his most notable poems, and one that truly exemplifies the idea of expressing personal emotion and feeling by using metaphors from nature. He uses the west wind to symbolize the power of nature and the imagination that was thus inspired by nature. It was almost even an agent for change. In the poem, the wild West wind ... Before getting very far, Dorothy sees the error in her ways and attempts to return home before being swept into a strange world of colorful characters by a tornado. Realizing that there is only one way to return home, she sets off with a group of her newfound friends on the adventure of a lifetime. Considered to be the most popular films of all time, the incredible tale of Dorothy must be historic for many reasons. One of the most distinct reasons for the popularity of this film is the director Victor Fleming s use of film. The movie as a whole was shot in two different films: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One societal theme that this film emphasizes is the insufficiency of adulthood. While most of us like to believe that becoming an adult gives us all the answers, it doesn t. Even in adulthood, many of us fail tot live up to the expectations of others and ourselves. Many adults are just as powerless as they were in their childhood. Take Auntie Em as an example. She can t do anything to prevent Toto from being taken away. While Dorothy can t comprehend how she d let Toto be sent to slaughter, Auntie Em knows she doesn t have the power to protect him. As an adult, she realized she had to follow the rules of society. This happens again later on at the most crucial moment of the film. After defeating the Wicked Witch, we see that the great Wizard of Oz is a charlatan and just as helpless as teenaged Dorothy. These episodes speak to the fallibility of grown ups in real life. While society tells us that wisdom comes with age, we are often times just as naïve as our childhood ... Rhetorical Analysis Of Violent Media Is Good For Kids Tabitha Desiree Luke Mrs. Woodward English 101 10 October 2017 A Rhetorical Analysis of Violent Media is Good for Kids From early childhood, parents, teachers, and other adults instill in us that violence is bad and unethical. We can all agree that we should avoid certain forms of violent behavior if possible; however, it is incorrect to assume that all forms of violence is bad. In his article Violent Media is Good For Kids , Gerald Jones argues that creative violence such as gory video games, Comic books, and play fighting give children tools to master rage and actually help more kids than they hurt. What the author is saying here is correct because children use these types of influences in imaginary play at a young age, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the Incredible Hulk was a ticking time bomb and completely out of control he was a sort of Jekel and Mr. Hyde character. Timid geek, gone raging goliath if you must. Yes, he was out of control and frightened tearing up everything in his path, but on the other side of that, he was also a caring good hearted person that got a good enough handle on his destructive side that he became a hero and started working with the Avengers. Jones is wrong to imply that the only reason these comics were good for him was due to the violence alone. This was not a character like the Joker who just tortured and corrupted people for a laugh and killed mercilessly, there is a reason the good guy always wins in these comics, and that is to appeal to the children reading them and to instill that type of behavior. Everybody loves a winner so when they make Batman or Superman triumph over The Joker or Lex Luthor the authors are instilling the value that good triumphs over evil to their audience. This means that while yes, they were good for him because they were violent and juvenile; they were also good because they still had those messages of conquering the demon, or lose yourself but find yourself again. Jones goes on to persuade us by using his son as an example. I have watched my son living the same story transforming himself into a bloodthirsty dinosaur to embolden himself for the plunge into preschool, a Power Ranger to muscle through a ...
