Diffusion is the random movement of molecules from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration. Osmosis is a type of diffusion where water moves through cell membranes from higher to lower concentrations, flowing into areas of higher solute concentration. The osmolarity, or total solute concentration, of extracellular fluid is normally higher than intracellular fluid, so water flows into cells by osmosis.
