The document discusses different types of anchorage used in orthodontics. It defines anchorage as the resistance used to overcome the reaction to an applied force. There are different factors that affect a tooth's resistance to force, as well as different types of anchorage including extra-oral anchorage like headgear and intra-oral anchorage that can be intra-maxillary or inter-maxillary. Examples of each type are provided. Temporary orthodontic micro anchorage systems are also discussed as a modern method to reinforce anchorage.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

6. Definition
Anchorage is the resistance used to
overcome the reaction of an applied force.
According to Newton’s third law of motion,
to every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction.

7. Resistance of a tooth to a given force
depend on the following:
Root area of a tooth, resistance is directly
proportional to root area.
2. Bone density in which the tooth is situated.
3. Force direction relative to direction of
natural growth.

8. Resistance of a tooth to a given force depend on the following:
4. Type of movement, greater resistance is
offered to a force which causes bodily
movement of the teeth than one which
permits teeth to tilt.
5. Muscular pressure can offer active resistance
to orthodontic tooth movement, e.g. in
tongue thrusting habit.
6. The manner of interlocking of cusps.

11. Extra-oral Parietal, Occipital and
Cervical anchorage:
Occipital anchorage eliminates possibility of
undesirable forward movement of mandibular
anchor teeth and used to distalize or prevent
forward displacement of maxillary dental arch,
especially when teeth in mandibular arch do not
require mesial movement.

16. Simple anchorage: anchor tooth will
be tipped if it can not overcome the
resisting force.
Stationary anchorage: anchor tooth
would be moved bodily if it can not
overcome the resisting force.
Reciprocal: There is reciprocal force
exerted between teeth to be moved.
May 22, 2012
Dr. Ahmed Basyouni
16
17. Single anchorage: a tooth of greater support
in the alveolar process is used to move a
tooth of lesser support.
Compound anchorage: number of teeth of
greater support in the alveolar process used
to move teeth of lesser support.

26. Reinforcement of anchorage:
a) Mandible may be used to reinforce the
anchorage by engagement of lower incisors
& canines by a plane built on palatal aspect
of a removable appliance.
b) A rigid short labial bow wire, incisors
engaged palatally at cervical margin by
base plate and labially with labial bow so
they can move bodily forward with the
appliance.
