Lifelong Learning ePortfolios: a media-rich technology for capturing and evid...ePortfolios Australia
OB3 – Beautiful Study for Lifelong Learning is a personal learning environment for creating and sharing content as part of informal, non-formal, and formal learning. Within minutes, individuals with basic technological skills (i.e. users of MS Office, internet browsers, and email applications) can author and share media-rich documents including hyperlinks, embedded discussions, videos, and/or audio-recordings. In the last two years, OB3 has been used to build ePortfolios for reflective practice in an MBA programme, and professional certification in a Midwifery programme. During the workshop, attendees will learn how to build an OB3 reflective practice portfolio. They will learn how to 1) capture their thoughts in writing, audio recordings, video, photos, hyperlinks, etc. to reflect on development areas; 2) keep private and personal records of their reflections as they happen; 3) email content and any attachments from their mobile devices directly to their portfolio; and 4) share selected sections of their reflections with other people as part of a course or co-creation for understanding project.

Schuck, S. & Kearney, M. (2004). Students in the director's seat: Teaching and learning across the school curriculum with student-generated video. (This study was funded by a UTS Industry Links Research Grant with Apple Computers Australia. )
This project investigated the value and use of student-generated digital video for enhancing pedagogy in K-12 schools. It aimed to identify, examine and analyse pedagogical practices in relation to use of this technology in five case schools. A further aim was to articulate the principles, contexts and approaches underlying these practices. An understanding of the practices and approaches which enhance or constrain pedagogy in these five cases will contribute to a future larger study. Principles of good practice developed in this study will be used to inform future research on models for enhancing pedagogy with digital video in education.

Current issues and approaches in developing digital literacyjisc-elearning
Slides for webinar 12 Feb 2013. This webinar discussed what digital literacies are and why it is important for universities and colleges to develop the digital literacies of their students and staff. We will look at some of the issues to consider when planning an institutional approach to developing digital literacies, and projects from Jisc’s Developing Digital Literacies programme will highlight some of the approaches that they have found effective in their own contexts.
In this presentation at SXSWedu in March 2013, Dr. Gigi Johnson explores the fuzzy world of “blended” courses in higher education. She dissects the tensions and tribulations as universities attempt to blend F2F and web-enriched tools in traditional environments, including challenges of time, space, and data politics in research universities, challenges with cost structures and faculty development, and abundant legal and IP issues. What is a class vs. what it could be with rich alternative technologies for learning? How do old universities rethink “class” instead of “just” repackage learning in a blended environment?

Conducting Research in Blended and Online EducationTanya Joosten
A workshop at #WCET15 in Denver, CO
This hands-on workshop consists of practice-based research planning activities to help you prepare for conducting research at the course or program level. Specifically, we will utilize the distance education research model developed by the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) to guide the development of research plans for blended and online. Attendees will walk away with a research agenda and the necessary tools to help them conduct research on their campus as part of the National DETA Research Center initiative. The DETA Center looks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in online learning (including competency-based education) for underrepresented individuals (i.e., economically disadvantaged, adult learners, disabled) through rigorous research. This workshop will prepare attendees to take a plan back to their own institution to successfully gather research on blended and online teaching and learning. For more on DETA, visit http://www.uwm.edu/deta. The workshop will span two concurrent session blocks- part I, 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. and part II, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Bring your laptop or mobile device.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The terms Project Based Learning and Problem Based Learning are more prevalent. So why “Challenge” Based Learning? It may seem like a matter of semantics, but there are important concepts behind the terminology.\n
Too often Project Based Learning is dismissed as simply hands-on project work in the classroom. If students are manipulating something or producing some kind of product, either in small groups or individually, some mistakenly think of this as Project Based Learning. But real Project Based Learning is much more.\n
Some educators have focused on Problem Based Learning in order to raise the bar and present some kind of situation or environment in which students have to solve a problem. This is similar to the medical model of interns doing case work in teaching hospitals.\nBut why would we stop with problem solving?\n
Challenge Based Learning can encompass a variety of ways to construct meaning...\n
Apple’s Challenge Based Learning draws from the work of Understanding by Design (Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe), the Buck Institute for Education’s Project-Based Learning work, and Edutopia’s collections of project-based learning, and it is informed by ADEs around the world.\nIt simplifies the approach to PBL and emphasizes transformative use of technology.\nSee iTunes U (in the iTunes Store), select the “Beyond Campus” directory, and click on ADEs.\n
This is how I see Apple’s CBL Framework and the UbD Framework dove-tailing.\n
I’m going to share with you 12 key components for professional learning about PBL while doing PBL that evolved over a period of 8 years of our Tech Mentor Program. I’ll be sharing these attributes with the understanding that applying them would look very different in your schools.\nThe slides and additional resources are located on my PBL/CBL wiki. This includes an extensive Tech Mentor Application Packet as well as the syllabus for our 45-hour New Mentor course.\n
