The virus can cause infection at any stage of
growth and development of plants.
Again,
The disease is caused by different species
(Table 1) having circular single-stranded DNA
(ssDNA), of the genus Begomovirus,
family Geminiviridae.
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is one of the most
economically important vegetable crops in the world.
Among the major biotic constraints, virus-associated Tomato
leaf curl disease (ToLCD) is a major limiting factor affecting its
cultivation and yield.

this virus is
transmitted
through whiteflies
or through
infected
transplants.
Though take up to
three weeks before
any symptoms
develop , the most
common indicator of
the disease is the
yellowing and upward
curling of the leaves
Normally,
in winter crop the
symptoms
appeared 25 days
post-inoculation ,
whereas in
summer crop , it
took not more
than 15 days
Also,
Efficiency of the
virus depends on the
season and the
prevailing
temperature of the
geographical
location.(100% transmission of
the virus is possible
during 33 to 39
degree C
temperature.)

Another cause of tomato plant leaf curling, also known as leaf roll, is attributed to physiological conditions. While
its exact cause may be unknown, it’s believed to be a sort of self-defense mechanism.
But in the viral case-

Crop
rotationCan be utilized for
management of disease spread
by naturally breaking the life
cycles of insect vectors ,
disease and weeds
Source and
use of crop
transplant
It is important in reducing or
delaying infection . Nurseries
should produce seedlings for
commercial distribution in
insect-proof environment or
under net cover to minimize
infestation by the vector and
subsequent virus transmission
prior to transplanting .
Biological
control
Biopesticides , a mass-produced
agent manufactured from a living
microorganism or a natural
product, may offer a solution to
disease control through
introduction of predators and
parasitoids of the vector.
Chemical
cintrolFoliar spray of neem (azadairachtin)
and neem plus can kill the eggs,
nymphs, and adults of B. tabaci . The
chemical control method is easy and
most commonly used approach
against the insect pest.
Again , ToLCV infected plants
should be destroyed to prevent
further infection
Host
resistanceResistance approach is an easy, more
effective approach for control of viral
diseases.
Management of viruses is difficult as viruses are systemic in nature, highly variable or diverse,
insect vectors, and so on . But management of ToLCV could be achieved by following various
management practices -
Introducing a
host-free
periodIt may delay infection in
tomato by reduced whitefly
population due to unavailability
of proper host

Begomoviruses are the most important viral pathogens . Tomato leaf curl disease is one of
the devastating diseases and has been reported to be associated with several begomoviruses
, thus making breeding for resistance more challenging. Adding to this, presence of diverse
beta-satellite increases complexity. Climate change and injudicious use of pesticides ensure
the persistence of whitefly throughout the year and pose further challenges for the
management of the disease.
A thorough understanding on variability of the virus complexes and understanding the
epidemiology could be an alternative in devising management strategy.
Thanks
everyone
The end.
