2. Introduction
• Papaya mosaic virus (PapMV) was first
reported in papaya in 1962 together with
papaya ring spot virus.
• The viruses were differentiated in 1965 and
1967 using particle lengths and host range.
3. Taxonomic classification
Group : IV
Order : Tymovirales
Family : Alphaflexiviridae
Genus : Potex virus
Species : Papaya mosaic virus (PapMV)
4. PapMV
• It is a filamentous, flexuous rod, 530 nm in
length.
• The virus is a monopartite strand of positive
sense, single standard RNA surrounded by a
capsid made for a single viral encoded protein.
7. Symptoms
• Mild leaf mosaic pattern with dark green
blister like patches.
• Later stage leaf veins show signs of clearing,
petioles are shorter and leaves curl downward.
• Plants show a moderately stunted growth.
8.
9.
10. Mode of spread and transmission
• Its spread from plant to plant by whitefly and
the disease transmission is through mechanical
plant injuries also.
11. Management
• Rotate with non host crops.
• Bio fungicides based on Verticillium lecanii
can also help to control the insect population.
• There is no chemical treatment for viral
infection. it is controlled through a series of
chemical products such as cypermethrin,
chlorpyriphos .
