Democratic Leadership (Participative
Leadership
Autocratic (Authoritarian Leadership)
Delegative (Laissez Faire) Leadership
Bureaucratic Leadership
There are several types of leadership
styles that are used by leaders today.
The following are some of the examples:
17. Democratic Leadership Style
The democratic leadership style is
also known as the participative
style. It encourages people to be
a part of the decision making
process. The democratic leader
keeps its people informed about
everything that affects them and
shares decision making and
problem solving responsibilities.
18. Characteristics of Democratic
Leadership Style
Group members are encouraged to
share ideas and opinions, even though
the leader retains the final say over
decisions.
Members of the group feel more
engaged in the process.
Creativity is encouraged and rewarded
19. Advantages of Democratic
Leadership Style
It is a leadership style anyone can
practice.
It helps to solve complex problems.
It builds team-based relationships.
It makes honesty a top priority.
It improves the relevant knowledge
of the team.
It gives team members a look at the
bigger picture.
It creates higher levels of job
satisfaction.
20. Disadvantages of Democratic
Leadership Style
It can cause disharmony if it is
misapplied.
It can cause leaders to start fence-
sitting.
It may never reach a true
consensus.
It struggles to offer a clear definition
of leadership.
It does not always offer a positive
outcome.
21. Autocratic Leadership Style
Autocratic leadership is also known
as authoritarian leadership. It is a
type of leadership style characterized
by individual control over all
decisions and little input from group
members. Authoritarian leaders
make decisions independently with
little or no input from the rest of the
group.
22. Characteristics of Autocratic
Leadership Style
Allows little or no input from group
members
Requires leaders to make almost all of
the decisions
Provides leaders with the ability to
dictate work methods and processes
Tends to create highly structured and
very rigid environments
Discourages creativity and out-of-the
box thinking
23. Advantages of Autocratic
Leadership Style
It allows for fast decisions to be
made.
It improves overall
communication.
It improves productivity.
It handles crisis situations
effectively.
It reduces employee stress.
It counters team inexperience.
24. Disadvantages of Autocratic
Leadership Style
It may impair the morale of the
group.
It does not offer a sense of
professional ownership.
It creates a work culture based on
the leader.
It creates a system of dependence.
It creates a lack of trust.
25. Disadvantages of Autocratic
Leadership Style cont…
It may cause some employees to rebel.
It reduces the amount of group input
received.
It creates moments of insecurity within
the leadership.
It creates a lack of feedback.
It causes everyone to rely on the
experience of the leader.
It eliminates innovation from the
process.
26. Delegative Leadership Style
Delegative leadership style is also
known as Laissez Faire leadership.
It is a type of leadership style where
leaders offer little (hands-off ) or no
guidance to group members and
leave decision-making up to group
members.
27. Characteristics of Delegative
Leadership Style
There is very little guidance from
leaders
There is complete freedom for
followers to make decisions
Leaders provide the tools and
resources needed
Group members are expected to solve
problems on their own
28. Advantages of Delegative
Leadership Style
It allows team members to maximize their own
leadership skills.
It provides the people with the most experience
to shine.
It creates an environment of independence.
It encourages team members to explore new
ideas.
It allows individual teams to create their own
environment.
It generates more individual satisfaction for the
work being done.
It provides the leader to be strategic with their
skills.
29. Disadvantages of Delegative
Leadership Style
It downplays the role of the leader
on the team.
It reduces the cohesiveness of the
group.
It changes how accountability is
assigned within the group.
It allows leaders to avoid leadership.
It is a leadership style which
employees can abuse.
It can be difficult to adapt to
changing situations.
30. Bureaucratic Leadership Style
Bureaucratic leadership is where the
leader manages "by the book¨
Everything must be done according
to procedure or policy. This leader is
really more of a police officer than a
leader. He or she enforces the rules.
31. Characteristics of Bureaucratic
Leadership Style
A clear hierarchy: Firm chain of
command.
Specialization: Everyone in a bureaucracy
has a specific job to do.
A division of labor: Every task is broken
down into its component parts, and
different people work on different parts of
the task.
A set of formal rules: standard operating
procedures of written instructions are given
for each specialized job.
32. Advantages of Bureaucratic
Leadership Style
The rules and procedures are
decided for every work.
The duties and responsibilities of
each job are clearly defined
The selection process and promotion
procedures are based on merit and
expertise.
The division of labour assists
workers in becoming experts in their
jobs.
33. Advantages of Bureaucratic
Leadership Style cont…
It removes favoritism from the equation.
It centralizes duties and roles within a
team.
It promotes higher levels of creativity.
It creates a stronger level of job security.
It is a predictable form of leadership.
It always seeks to create best practices.
It is a leadership style which offers
upward scalability.
It is a style of leadership which
encourages familiarity.
34. Disadvantages of Bureaucratic
Leadership Style
This system suffers from too much of red
tape and paper work.
The employees do not develop
belongingness to the organisation.
The excessive reliance on rules and
regulations and adherence to these
policies inhibit initiative and growth of the
employees.
The employees become so used to the
system, they resist to any change and
introduction of new techniques of
operations.
35. Disadvantages of Bureaucratic
Leadership Style cont…
It has a structure which has limited
forward movement.
It is often based on a system of quotas.
It is a leadership style which bases
decisions on cost structures.
It does not offer freedom for creativity.
It is not always a system that is
efficient.
It can be difficult for bureaucratic
leaders to adapt to change.
36. In today’s society, leadership
inspires other people to pursue
their vision to the extent that it
later becomes a shared vision
between the leaders and the
subordinates that contributes
towards the success of an
organization.
Conclusion
37. And an effective leader influences
followers in a desired manner to
achieve desired goals and Good
leaders develop through a never
ending process of self-study,
education, training, and
experience.
