Birth-3 months (hearing/understanding) Child will awaken at loud sounds, startle, or cry Child will listen to speech, turn to you when you speak.
Birth-3 months (talking) Child will cry differently for different needs. Child will smile when he or she sees you.
4-6 months (hearing/understanding) Child will notice noise or sound from toys. Child will respond to tone of voice (loud or soft).
4-6 months (talking) Child will make gurgling sounds when alone. Child will use speech or noncrying sounds to get and keep your attention.
7-12 months (hearing/understanding) Child enjoys games like peekaboo and patty-cake. Child will listen when spoken to.
7-12 months (talking) Child will imitate different speech sounds. Child will have 1 or 2 words (“bye-bye” or “no” or “dada”) although they may not be clear.
12-24 months (hearing/understanding) Child points to few body parts when asked.
12-24 months (talking) Child puts 2 words together (“no juice,” “more milk”) Child uses many consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
24-36 months (hearing/understanding) Child can follow two requests combined (“Get the ball and put it on the table”)
24-36 months (talking) Child will ask or direct attention to objects by naming them.
