 How Children Acquire Language:
 Language Acquisition:
It refers to the way a child learns and acquires its native language
unconsciously without learning any language rules. Children
acquire language through interaction with individuals which
includes parents, adults and even children in their surroundings.
The child will acquire the language of the individual whom it
spends the most amount of time with and it could be a mother,
father or a helper etc.
 Stages of Language Development:
1. Cooing: (0-4 Months)
At the stage of cooing, a child learns vowel sounds when the
child is exposed to different sounds and individual in its
environment. During this time, the child begins to grasp short
words and phrases that are central to their needs and interests.
Eg: K/G/U/I
2. Babbling: (6-8 Months)
At the stage of babbling, the infant is usually able to produce
vowel and consonant sounds such as fricatives and nasal. The
infant begins to babble and make noises and syllable that are not
yet words.
Eg: Mu/Da.
3. One Word Stage or Holophrastic: (9-18 Months)
At this stage between 9-18 months the child is able to utter
single words for everyday object, that are centered around basic
needs and interests as well as names or identifiers. A child is
able to utter single word which would convey the meaning of a
sentence. The Child approximately acquires 50 words by this
stage.
Eg: Mama, Baba, Cookie, Cup, Yummy etc
4. Two Word Stage: (18-24 Months)
At this stage, the child is able to speak kernel sentences. As
once the children have developed single word speech, they
begin to pair groups of words together into mini-sentences and
phrases. The vocabulary of the child is beyond 50 words.
Eg: Mummy eat, I want, give me etc.
5. Telegraphic Stage: (24-36 Months)
At this stage, the child is able to speak a sentence containing 3
or more words as children begin to expand their two word
phrases into short sentences, and that sentence is usually
consisting of a Noun and a Verb.
Eg: Cat drank milk, I want Cookie etc,
6. Multiword Stage: (36 Months and on-)
Past the age of three, most children fall into the multiword
stage. In this final stage of language acquisition, children now
learn to use functional morphemes to change meaning of the
words they use.
Eg: but, in, the, and that.
