Editor's Notes

  • #3 Kuhlthau (1992) Sequential model consisting of six stages: initiation, selection, exploration, formulation, collection, closure/presentation. Model encompasses the affective (feelings), the cognitive (thoughts), and the physical (actions and strategies). Dervin (1983, 1989, 1992) Sense-Making: users seek information when they encounter a knowledge gap that they bridge by seeking and revising information. Information is constantly being interpreted by the user during the process, changing the user’s construct of the information need and affecting future information seeking. Foster (xxx) Nonlinear Sandstrom (1994) Foraging: an actor choosing among alternatives, a currency by which the actor measures costs and benefits, a set of constraints limiting behavior and a strategy set specifying the actor's range of available options. Bates (xxx) Berry Picking Belkin (xxx) ASK Wilson (1981 & 1997) information seeking to satisfy affective needs or cognitive needs that arise out of an individual’s role in social life. Environment affects the person’s role (work/performance) which then affects the person (physiological/affective/cognitive). Barriers exist between person & information seeking behavior
