Lollapalooza and The Alternative Music Culture Essay
There have been many events in the course of music history that has shaped how what becomes
popular and what is deemed proper in terms of music we should be consuming. In 1991, Lollapalooza,
a multi city touring festival in the United States, highlighting alternative culture changed how music
was consumed from there on forward. With the popularity of the festival and the highlighting of the
alternative culture it represented the music industry took note, not long after the festival and explosion
of alternative music hit mainstream music culture. New bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in
Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and bands who had been around awhile but had a smaller
marginalized audiences such as the Red Hot Chili ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the purposes of this paper, alternative music culture while has a wide definition will be focused on
the music culture that was evident in Los Angeles between about 1985 until it became more
mainstream in 1991. This centre of the culture in LA is important because most of the important
record companies were and still are, based out of LA, since there was this centre of culture decision
makers it s not surprising that the city became a hot spot for musicians who wanted to become
recognized. Also important is the sheer size of LA itself, any time you get a city as large as it is you
get a wide variety of people living in a smaller area, communities come together and form various
subgroups. One subgroup evident in LA at this time was those who fell outside the dominate music
groups of the time, mainly, new wave, hip hop and hair metal (Mullen 2005). This subgroup was as
varied as those who did not fall under the alternative heading, musically they could prescribe to
anything from the funk roots of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the 70 s influenced rock of Jane s
Addiction.
More importantly the people who fell under the alternative culture felt like their voices were not being
heard in the music that dominated the air waves at the time. It can be hypothesized that the alternative
music culture in LA grew out of a rejection of the hyper masculine, misogynistic values of the hair
metal scene that dominated LA and popular music culture for much of the 80 s. A

Times Square 1945 Analysis
Times Square, 1945, the end of the Second World War. A beautiful nurse and a handsome sailor
embrace in celebration that war has come to an end. Maybe lovers, maybe complete strangers, but still
in love with the idea of freedom and safety. Old black and white photos bring a kind uniqueness of
perspective. Instead of seeing colors, you have to see and feel what the photographer sees and feels
from taking the photo. This makes analyzing more interesting. The photo s purpose is, no matter how
tough life gets, there is always love in the world. Half way around the world or in Times Square, love
is infinite. The way the photographer structured this piece is compelling, just because of the contrast
between them. He photographs rapid changing events

Short Story On Daniel Boyle
I was in my kitchen, my brothers weren t home, parents on vacation which mean I was home alone. I
was cooking some microwave mac and cheese and I went to the microwave and saw a note that said

and threw it away. As soon as I put the note in the trash I heard the doorbell ring and I went to see who
it was. I looked out the window to see who it was and I saw a clown wearing a mask with blood on it,
a rainbow outfit and rainbow coveralls. Suddenly I realized he had a knife in his hand and then all the
lights went off. I thought the power went off and then I heard banging comes from the front door. How

Examples Of Animal Imagery In Miss Julie
Miss Julie is a drama of paradoxes and reversals. It is a play by August Strindberg which is set on
midsummer s Eve. It is a play that touches on symbols through animal imagery. These references to
animals as Miss Julie shows the idea that human beings are the products of the forces surrounding
them . Strindberg adopted animals to parallel characters and convey ideas dramatically which would
be otherwise be kind of inappropriate with explicit representation of mortals. The animal imagery in
this play demonstrates how society looks down upon the people they feel are inferior to them. I
believe that August has given the audience a deeper understanding of the forces acting on the
characters in Miss Julie through the use of animal imagery. I am discussing the ... Show more content

This suddenly reveals the characters to both Julie and Jean himself. Strindberg decides to use animals
to match characters and convey the meaning behind everyone s actions. He firstly uses stable yard to
show a place Miss Julie and her ex husband were at and thus brings about a horse in mind. Here we
get to see Miss Julie putting his ex husband in a horrible situation and treating him like a child. Teach
a dog to jump [4] also shows how proud Miss Julie is and wants to show that class rules but Jean
eventually shows that no matter what, whether rich or not men are superior to women when he takes
control of the situation of Miss Julie and The bird. Even though Miss Julie wants to show that women
too have a say in judgements, she is easily weakened by Jean flirts and cannot say any more.
Strindberg uses Julie s dog, Diana which seems to serve as an epitome of Julie s fate or fortune. The
dog get into an affair with a pug of the lower standing, the gatekeeper s pug . Using these antitheses
foreshadows Julie and Jean where an aristocrat Julie escapes her social levels and has an affair with a
commoner,

Who Would Have Thought That Soured Beer
Who would have thought that soured beer would begin a study that would one day result in the
discovery of several vaccines for deadly diseases? It all began when Bigo, a man who had
manufactured beer from the sugar beet, went to see Pasteur. Louis Pasteur at the time was the Dean of
the Faculty of Science at the University of Lille in France. Bigo asked Pasteur if he could discover
why some of his beer became sour. Louis Pasteur used a microscope to study the vats of soured beer.
He discovered that there were microorganisms in the beer. Because Louis Pasteur explored the
possibility that these microorganisms were causing what is called putrefaction, a process of organic
breakdown, he discovered many important facts. One of which was that microorganisms existed. He
went on to explore the possibility that these microorganisms, or microbes, can be found airborne.
Even when his peers scoffed at his ideas, Louis continued with his work. After discovering these
microbes in wine, milk, and silkworms, Louis Pasteur believed that these microbes could affect human
beings, that they could cause diseases. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

he just guessed and check, or exploration and discovery. This consisted of inoculating chickens with

Tattooing: Culturally Significant and Contemporarily Popular Skin Art
(Annotated Bibliography)
Reed, Carrie E. (2000). Tattoo in Early China. Journal of the American Oriental Society, 120(3) 360
377. Author Carrie Read reports on ancient tattooing in China, beginning with the Tang dynasty (618
907). Barbarians tattooed their bodies according to tribal beliefs and slaves were tattooed as
punishment, Read explains (361). In the Kirghiz culture women tattooed the nape of the neck to
indicate marital status. This is a very interesting scholarly source.
Kosut, Mary. (2006). An Ironic Fad: The Commodification and Consumption of Tattoos. The Journal
of Popular Culture, 39(6), 1035 1047. For the curious person who wishes to know why the American
pop culture has gone wild about tattoos, and whom the tattooed stars in movie, sports, and music are,
this is the perfect scholarly article. Kosut explains why tattooing has gone mainstream based on her
six years of ethnographic research.
Schildkrout, Enid (2004). Inscribing the Body. Annual Review of Anthropology, 33(1), 319 344. This

Zimbardo s Experiment, Studying The Way Prisoners And...
Likewise Zimbardo s (1971) experiment, studying the way prisoners and guards interacted,
demonstrated similar ethical failings, such as consent gained without individuals being made fully
aware of the involvements; physical, emotional and psychological harm subjected; violation of rights,
including privacy, respect, confidentiality and the ability to withdraw (). Fascinated by the volume of
ordinary individuals who executed terrible things to others during WWII, Zimbardo predicted that all
people, even the good, had the potential to conduct malevolence when sited in the correct environment
(Haney et al, 1973). In a mock prison participants were recruited to play a role, half as prisoners and
the rest as guards. Both were dressed accordingly, with the guards wearing a uniform with mirrored
sunglasses which promotes anonymity as their emotions are obscured, but yet denotes their position of
power and authority. According to Zimbardo (2000) these conditions of deindividuation allow for the
facilitation of evil. Subsequently it becomes acceptable to enforce measures which degrade prisoners
of their self respect, including being stripped, deloused and ordered to carry a chain around their
ankle, whilst the mandatory wearing of a smock and a cap made from a stocking demoralized them as
it impacted upon their masculinity. Additionally, not only were prisoners assigned a number by which
they were referred to, denying them of their identity, but each area of their daily

The First Battle of Bull Run Essay examples
THE FIRST BATTLE OF BULL RUN
BY COLLINS MCKAY
On July 21, 1861, two armies, one confederate and the other Union, prepared for the first major land
battle of the Civil War. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as President.
The Southern states had seceded and the South had fired on and captured Fort Sumter on April 12
1861.
After the Fort Sumter battle, both the North and the South began preparing for war by raising armies.
This was done quickly and neither side spent much time training the troops. Both sides also did not
know what a long and terrible war was ahead.
The first Battle of Bull Run took place near Manassas Junction, Virginia, an important railroad
junction twenty five miles west of Washington, D.C. Bull Run ... Show more content on

General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west, and began several
attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the Confederate line at Henry House.
As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear down the Confederate
lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels
who were still strong. He said, look at Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about
General T. J. Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of the
most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern troops at Henry House
who held their ground and began to beat back the Union forces.
On the west flank the Union troops who had been moving slowly were pushed back by General
Johnston s troops who arrived in the afternoon by railroad. Civilian spectators had come out from
Washington to watch the battle. They thought it would be like a sporting event. As the battle turned
against the North, they panicked and the one road back to Washington became clogged with
overturned carriages and wagons. The Union retreat had turned into panic by early evening.
In the end, the North had suffered 2,896 men killed wounded or missing; the South had lost 1,982. The
South had won the big victory in the first major

The Safety Standards Of Mercury
Mercury is extremely dangerous to humans due to its extreme conditions not suitable to human life.
Missions to Mercury must be conducted with infallible safety standards to prevent incidents such as
what has happened in the past. These safety standards must consider all possible circumstances in
which measures must be taken. When doing missions on Mercury safety should be the number one
priority. Before creating safety standards, it is important to first acknowledge issues and situations that
has arisen in the past. Awhile back, a team of scientist were sent to complete a mission on Mercury.
Accompanied with them was a robot that went by the name of Speedy. Speedy was a multifunctional
robot built to assist the scientist with whatever they needed. Speedy was especially useful against
Mercuries harsh conditions. He was able to maneuver the surface where humans could not. Before
arriving on Mercury, the team knew they would need selenium in order to repair their photo cell
banks. These banks are important in keeping the base on Mercury from burning up. Speedy was
capable of retrieving this selenium, but was the only one capable of doing so. This is because he was
the only robot sent with the team. The safety flaw in only having one robot to complete a life or death
task is enormous. Standards at the time did not take into account flaws in technology. On the day of
the mission, Speedy was sent out to retrieve the selenium. The scientist found it rather strange that he

Dan Gable Role Model

The History of Dan Gable
If you are, or ever were, a wrestler, could you imagine having a record of 181 1? Dan Gable did not
have to imagine it, because that was his record. Throughout his high school, college and Olympic
career, he only lost one match. Nate Kaeding expressed it perfectly when he said, He has truly earned
his place as the godfather of Iowa sports (Wrestling Life). Dan Gable is the best, pure wrestling role
model because of the amount of hard work and dedication he put into the sport and his drive to always
be better. This is illustrated in his record as a high school and college wrestler, a coach, and in the
Olympics as a wrestler and coach.

In the article, Gable Dominated as a Wrestler and Coach , the author, Mike Puma, talked about Gable:
In his first season, the Hawkeyes went 17 1 1 and finished third at the 1977 NCAA tournament. Gable
was voted the NCAA s Rookie Coach of the Year (Gable Dominated). Between 1978 and 1986, Gable
led his team as a coach to nine straight NCAA titles, and in twenty one seasons as the head coach at
Iowa State, he led them to fifteen titles. While Gable was a coach, Lou Banach, a wrestler of Gable s,
said No one is a better motivator than Gable and that is a huge part of the success of Iowa wrestling
(WrestlingLife). Gable was not only a good coach because of this motivation, however. Because he
was such a successful wrestler through high school, college, and the Olympics, his wrestlers had
something to live up to. They were challenged every day to be better than he was. During Gable s
career as a coach, his teams lost more than one dual meet in a year only five times in his twenty one
years. He coached 152 All Americans, 45 National Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions and twelve
Olympians, including four gold, one silver and three bronze medalists (DanGable). The Hawkeyes
won twenty five consecutive Big Ten championships, twenty one under Gable as head coach and four
while he was an assistant coach and administrator (HawkeyeSports). At that time it tied the longest

Essay Defender of the Faith Theme
Defender of the Faith Theme
Theme in Defender of the Faith can be interpreted in many varying ways, some of which are life long
lessons and others to the relation between faith and the individual.
Throughout much of the story, Nathan Marx is lost between his role as a sergeant, Jew and human
being. The relationship between the church, state and individual is a well known concept. The three
must be independent of each other and this story explores what happens when the three are forced
together. His religion starts the whole process of the three intertwining. As his grandmother said,
Mercy overrides justice. The quote reflects Marx s human side, where feelings dominate over duty. I
think the theme warns about faith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, the author, Philip Roth, is teaching us the good, honourable way of life.
The theme with Jewishness has much to do with Nathan Marx, the defender mentioned in the title. He
unknowingly fights the good war against anti Semitism in the European theatre of war and comes
back to train more soldiers against the Axis powers. In the process he cares for his Jewish trainees in
terms of weekly rituals and diet and gives them leeway. Marx went out of his way to please Grossbart,
in fact he even conflicted with his Captain on numerous occasions about food and combat. Grossbart
was simply manipulating and abusing the religion for his own gain. When Marx realizes this, he once
again fights back by sending him to the Pacific. The war and decisions made in boot camp were tough
times for Marx, a lot like the suffering of Jews throughout history. Either way, he perseveres and wins
both his battles against the Nazis, the ignorance of his colleagues and the manipulation of Grossbart.
There is a theme much like the title, of staying true to the faith, educating and protecting it from those
who oppose or don t understand it. As long as you believe, things will turn out right. He may not be an
Orthodox or traditional Jew but he is a true Jew, determined by actions, more than just prayers and
words.
The right way to live as an individual in society is an important theme set in this

Characteristics And Mechanisms Of Agrobacterium Tumefaciens
I. Introduction
If I told you there was an organism that can sniff out it s victim, approach it, infect it, and cause
cancer, would you believe it can also genetically modify it s hosts to incorporate beneficial novel
genes? Agrobacterium tumefaciens is an unsung villain/hero that is in fact, capable of such amazing
things. Agrobacteria tumefaciens is a bacterium that parasitizes plant tissue, and causes what is often
referred to as crown gall yet it is more the virally reminiscent mechanism through which this occurs
than the physical deformity itself that is of interest. Agrobacterium tumefaciens is motile and utilizes
chemo taxis paired with its intrinsic secret weapon the Ti plasmid in order to accomplish gall
formation. Not only is the pathogenesis of this bacteria fascinating, but it moreover leaves scientists
with the opportunity to employ certain abilities of A. tumefaciens to engineer crops rendering
Agrobacterium tumefaciens very integral to modern agriculture, and future research. However with
great power comes great responsibility, and we will see yet, through examining the characteristics and
mechanisms of Agrobacterium tumefaciens whether it is a villain, or a hero!
II. Isolation and Subsequent Culturing Culturing Agrobacterium tumefaciens has been essential in
discovering the full mechanisms of its infection and tumor formation. Moreover, A. tumefaciens can
be isolated from multiple sources including water, soil, and the gall of infected plants

Puritan Community In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne writes The Scarlet Letter to exhibit the inflexibility of the Puritan community.
Hawthorne embodies a strong female character: Hester Prynne who was married before has an affair
with Dimmesdale, a lover, bearing a child. Hawthorne s use of an allusion to the bible helps one
understand the rigidity of the puritan community. Although both committed sin, Hester acknowledges
her sin whereas Dimmesdale is apprehensive and worries about social acceptance. Hawthorne s
characterization of Hester juxtaposes the other women. As Hester is able to develop an independent
role other women are more concerned with the idea of domesticity, reliability to men. Hawthorne also

Prejudice And Racism In Moby Dick By Herman Melville
In the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville, there is an untold truth about racism. The whiteness of
the whale and Ishmael s relationship with Queequeg suggest more than what meets the eye. Moby
Dick was written approximately 10 years before the Civil War in America, a time when the fight over
race was more relevant than ever. Although some may argue that race cannot be argued in Moby Dick,
an article from The Massachusetts Review says, the novel is a a floating Babel of racial types
(Bernard). The order of the Pequod demonstrates the hierarchy of race in the world at this time. Due to
the focus on the whiteness of the whale , the broad mindedness of the characters, and the secondary
position of the colored characters.

Tenno. The previous political and military leader of Japan had been the Tokugawa shogunate, but due
to the intrusion of the western powers, particularly the Americans, under the command of Commodore
Perry, the Shogun was forced to return power to the Emperor. This restoration of power led to many
changes in Japanese society such as the social structure, the education system and the Japanese
economy that has contributed to Japan becoming a modern world power.
One of the biggest changes that happened in the Japanese society because of the Meiji Restoration was
the change in social structure. Instead of being dictated their roles in life by the Tokugawa Shogunate,
millions of people were free to choose their occupation and move without restrictions (AFA, 2014).
However not all previous social roles were allowed to continue on under Emperor Meiji. The Samurai
social class was made obsolete (ABC Splash, 2016). Instead a new army, modelled on the superior
strength of the American army was formed. By making people free to choose their ... Show more

opened their borders, allowing japan to improve their basic infrastructure, improving communication
and to be able to travel from city to city easier. The markets were often based on main roads/path
ways, rivers and special temples so that the local sellers are able to easily bring their items to the
markets, according to (The Program for Teaching East Asia 2008). In doing this Japan was able to
become more richer and Emperor Meiji was able to turn Japan into a modern world power as we see it

The Evolving United States Government Essays
Like nature, the United States government has evolved to meet the demands of an ever growing
population, the increasing terrorist threat, and a new state of mind in terms of what government should
look like. Each branch of the federal system plays a key role in controlling the populace. The
Executive branch handles day to day maintenance of the federal government, makes sure laws are
enforced and carried out, as well as represents the U.S. to foreign interests. The Legislative branch
passes laws and allocates funds for use in running the federal government and providing assistance to
the states. The Judicial branch hears cases that involve disputes between interpretations of the laws or
those that challenge them. A delicate balance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Textual Analysis Of Friends
1.) The show I watched was Friends a sitcom about six young adults living in New York City. Monica,
one of the six lead characters serves as the Information giver, she presents the group with the
information that her credit card was stolen and charges have been made to it. Also Monica goes into
more detail describing what exactly was purchased such as tap dance classes. Another character
Rachel serves as the critic of the group, much of the communication revolves around the two of them.
For example Monica tells the group that she is going to join the dance class that her thief is attending,
quickly Rachel expresses her dislike of that idea asking if she really thinks that is a good idea. This

4.) Monica would be the leader of the group especially in this episode. The character is very
organized, in her free time even apart from the group she enjoys having her apartment and restaurant
she works at organized. These are examples of the way her leadership skills function that she uses
even outside of the group. Task functions are a lot more important to her than process functions
although she is not a mean character her main priority is that the work in the group gets done correctly
and on time. Since she is focused more on tasks she does not think that anything that would strengthen
moral such as gate keeping a conversation is important. She is much more likely to be seen as an
authoritarian leader. Some in the group such as Rachel are no always comfortable telling her their
views. The climate in the group leans more defensive than supportive. When Monica wanted to find
out more about her thief Rachel urged her not to pursue it however she quickly dismissed Rachel s
opinion. 5.) There are two different types of climate a group could have the first one is

The Message of Hate in Babi Yar Essay
The Message of Hate in Yevgeny Yevtushenko s Babi Yar
There are very few people in the world who are willing to go against the popular trends and do what
they feel in their hearts is correct. But Yevgeny Yevtushenko is one of those people. In his poem Babi
Yar, he tells the story of the modern persecution of the Jews, focusing on atrocities like those of the
massacre at Babi Yar and the pogroms at Beilostok, and also the general anti Semitism that killed men
like Dreyfus and pervades the entire Russian people. The poem uses many literary devices, such as
graphic imagery and contrasts, while painting a very clear picture of the scenes of pure horror.
Babi Yar is written in many different voices, all of which, however, have ... Show more content on

He says that he too must be a Jew for he is afraid of what his people and his society have become.
Many years ago, in the ancient days, it would not be such a shock to see the Jews enslaved in Egypt or
crucified as a means of torture and death, but even in modern times the same things are going on he
still has the marks from where the nails pierced him. The author has used classical examples of Jewish
persecution which every one knows is gone in the physical sense, but show how they still exist in the
theoretical aspect, as the persecution is still occurring.
In the next three stanzas, the poem takes the standpoint of three figures whose stories are pertinent
examples of what Yevtushenko is trying to rely in this poem. First the voice of Dreyfus is used, and
the stanza describes how horribly and unfairly he was treated, and how the country and its leaders
turned their backs on him.
There are two important literary devices used in this section. First the author puts the word pettiness
on a line by itself. This is used as a declaration of what the author feels anti Semitism is based on. It is
because of pettiness that Dreyfus was accused and further because of pettiness that he was not
pardoned when it was proven that he had not committed any crime. The next important device is the
description of ladies with their umbrellas. This is an image to the wealthy

Urban families have no qualms sending their girls to school and more and more rural families are also
sending their girls to schools. This changing social trend is reflected by the indicators. The girls to
boys enrolment ratio in primary schools in 1990 was 0.56 but in 2005 was 0.86. 9 Similarly, the ratios
for secondary schools in 1990 was 0.43 and rose to 0.82 in 2005.9 The ratio for tertiary level
education in 1990 was 0.32 9 and in 2008 was 0.41.10 Ratio of literate women to men in the age
group of 15 to 24, the second indicator, has also jumped from 0.48 in 1990 to 0.73 in 2005.9
A simple strategy adopted by the Nepali government to get more girls in rural areas to attend schools
was the Deworming Programme, combined with other simple measures such as school meals and take
home rations. This has also improved their drop out and retention rates. In 2000 a pilot project in
Nepali schools, involving deworming tablets, a hot noon meal and food gifts for girls to take home,
resulted in a 43% growth in school enrolment by girls. In addition, anaemia decreased.11 Media
campaigns highlighting the advantages of having educated females in the family have also helped.

High school football began in the late nineteenth century along side many college football teams.
Practices became apparent with multiple pep rallies, cross town and county rivals, mascots, marching

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Essay
Sexual harassment in the workplace is a very serious problem that must be dealt with effectively.
Sexual harassment is defined as a form of sex discrimination, which is a violation of Title VII of the
Civil Rights Act of 1964. It involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and
other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, especially when submission to this conduct is
made a term or condition of one s employment (Sexual Harassment). However, sexual harassment is
not limited to sexual advances. It also includes the creation of a intimidating, hostile, or offensive

Is it okay to tell off color jokes? What is unwelcome? When is conduct based on sex? Are employees
allowed to flirt on the job? What happens when someone gets offended? Who decides what is

will more likely find an illegal hostile environment present when the workplace includes sexual
propositions, pornography, extremely vulgar language, sexual touching, degrading comments, or
embarrassing questions or jokes. There are many examples of court cases which back this up.

Age Discrimination And The Work World Today With Age...
Are businesses prepared for what is amounting in the work world today with age diversification? All
humans in general are healthier thus living longer which means they are working longer periods in the
business world. You are starting to hear more and more cases about age discrimination and big
businesses are aware of this occurrence. Age discrimination can be the most harmful act to happen to a
business.
The Age Discrimination Act was passed in 1967; it states all workers who are 40 and older shall not be
discriminated in recruitment, hiring, firing, salary, retirement and other practices. (SEC. 623. [Section
4]) Investigating charges and trying to work out solutions is done through the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission (EEOC). (SEC. 633a. [Section 15]) Among all the various discrimination
cases, age discrimination can be the most potentially damaging to a corporation.
Congress has even noticed that age limits are being placed on certain jobs. This is ridiculous! If a
person who is older is just as productive as they were why fire them. You can bring in a younger
person to learn from the older person and save a lot of time and money because when you bring in a
young person you need train them for their job. But if you use your resources and use the older worker
you are killing two birds with one stone. I am glad congress knows about this trend and I hope that
one day discrimination will not be in existence.
Recommendations have been made to congress about

Ground temperatures in parts of the North are warming by one 10th of a degree after every ten years.
Where ground ice contents are comparatively high, melting permafrost can have significant impacts,
some of which may take not be as willingly obvious as others. On ice, you do not need a very sloped
surface before you start to slip or slide and hence, that is what happens with the permafrost and
overlying land, resulting in landslides in the North. Also, melting permafrost leads to subsidence,
which occurs usually when permafrost thaws/melts and the soil formerly held up by the ice caves in.
An example of this would be about Iqaluit s Arctic Winter Games arena, where the floor began to sink
soon after the building opened in October 2001. It is predicted that permafrost area may decrease by
approximately thirty seven to eighty one percent by the end of the century! As temperatures keep
getting warmer, permafrost will continue to thaw. Moreover, changes in permafrost have unpleasant
results for infrastructure designed for permafrost conditions. Eventually, pipelines, airstrips and roads
need to be changed because they depend on permafrost for structural integrity. The estimated costs to
upgrade and fix buildings or infra structure in Canada s North could range from $250 million to $420
million. All these current/predicted changes due to melting permafrost has resulted in a huge or major
burden on the government resources.100 and 1000 of people in North Canada live on permafrost.
Once the frozen water turns into water, it makes it quite difficult for the people in the towns to find
drinking water. To conclude, melting permafrost in North Canada has resulted in landslides,
subsidence, damage to infra structure and people are facing trouble in accessing

The Fourth Amendment Of The Fourth Amendment
When the colonists established the bill of rights in the 18th century, the fourth amendment seemed
unambiguous. The government needed to respect the right for people to be secure in their persons,
house, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures and not be violated, and no
warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause. The difference between today and eighteenth century is
that many more situations have come up that weren t around during the eighteenth century. New
technologies, new threats and new circumstances have risen that may diminish the restriction on the
fourth amendment. In order to protect society from new threats and circumstances in America, the
Supreme Court expands their understanding of the fourth amendment to apply it to the new world. The
idea of the respect for privacy antedates American law. Over one thousand years ago a Roman
statesman by the name of Cicero says that there is nothing that should be less dishonored than the
home of man and it is immoral to violate his place of safety. Although this may true, government has
always had a thirst for information. One major example of this is between the English kingdom and
the thirteen colonies. Until 1768 there was something known as the salutary neglect were Britain wasn
t enforcing many of their laws. Due to the major debt from the French and Indian war, laws involving
taxes and controlling American smugglers, needed to be put in place. One key aspect that helped

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is a chemical used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins
(MNT, 2014). The key factor for ideal health is a suitable diet and the plastics and epoxy resins made
from BPA are used to make a variety of consumer products many being food containers, baby
products, water bottles, canned foods, and pop cans (Walters, 2011). BPA has allowed engineers to

are some advantages of BPA, the disadvantages are more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only did science contribute towards the understanding of BPA, but it presented various benefits on
top of that. Firstly, BPA has economic implications as it is cheap and can be easily manufactured.
Many alternatives are beginning to arise such as thermal paper for different types of printing that use
BPA and glass and stainless steel that are being widely used in different consumer products, but BPA
is cheaper and more efficient as products like plastic water bottles only cost about $4.99 while BPA
Free water bottles cost $14.99 $20.00 (BeCause Water Benefit Corp, 2014). On a larger scale, such as
industrial, business, medical, and safety equipment products, will produce the same trend as small
scale products, as BPA responds to government regulations while still upholding consumer preference.
This way the government is be able to save a lot of money while still producing high volumes of
different products. Secondly, using BPA has social benefits as Polycarbonate Plastic, is durable,
lightweight, shatter resistant, and heat resistant and provides a clear view of food in containers which
helps to keep the food fresh. By protecting the food from spoiling, cans with Epoxy Resin lining is
able to keep food fresh and have a shelf life for almost two years. This is necessary for feeding large

company has been brought in to evaluate some of these uncertainties that come along when
unchartered territory is explored. Arundel Partners has an idea that has great potential, but there are a
few problems that must be addressed in order for the idea to become reality. First, we will look at
potential limited partners. More than likely general partners will not have experience or specialized

This would help give Arundel Partners an advantage while negotiating because studios would
normally misprice the rights to be lower than actuality, since it is not normality for them to assign a
value to sequel rights before the first film was in production. Through the use of a simple Net Present
Value (NPV) calculation, we can determine the expected profitability of the hypothetical sequels in
question. The NPV is calculated by discounting future cash inflows and outflows by a rate that is
adjusted for riskiness of the investment, the required rate of return. In this case of purchasing movie
sequel rights the discount rate is 15 percent. We are expecting to produce every film sequel that has a
positive NPV, when computing the NPV of this investment decision in the first assumption. That is,
every sequel that we predict to be profitable. However, we must take into account that we are buying
the rights to all of the possible sequels, even if they are not profitable. When we sum up all of the
positive NPVs, 25 in total, then we must divide that number by every film in which sequel rights were
purchased, 99 total. Even if a sequel is deemed unprofitable and not produced, we have already
purchased the rights it. This strategy would provide a positive NPV of $4.35. However, producing 25
films is not very feasible due to

ultimately earned Will s trust. However, I would not have stereotyped my client, and assumed that for
instance you may have even been laid a few times , which Sean states in the scene. Perhaps Will has
never had intercourse? For me as a worker I would not assume things about an individual. I also
would not as a worker self disclose in the extreme fashion that Sean does. I struggle with self
disclosure in both my professional and personal life; I m a very private person. Despite the fact that I
do not use self disclosure in my work, there is evidence that says it can be appropriate in some
situations. For instance: workers who use interventions where they divulge their own experiences are
more relaxed and responsive to their clients (Rosenbloom, 2001, p.1). Furthermore, there are
circumstances where a comment made about the client s reality helps them move along in therapy. In
the film, after the conversation in the park, Sean s remarks made Will take therapy more seriously
(Rosenbloom, 2001, p.1). Lastly, research has found that a comment made about the workers personal
life may trigger the client to discuss their own struggles. Following the scene on the park bench, the
trust Will has gained for Sean is enough for Will to confide in him. Sean being vulnerable and real
with Will about his personal struggles is what makes this possible (Rosenbloom, 2001, p.1). Even
though self disclosing is not something I use with clients, I see how it can be effective and its outcome

high stress exercise and requires that lower intensity exercises are done between each session. When
doing H.I.I.T the participant will sprint or lift rapidly for a certain period of time, for instance a

Speech Codes Theory Essay
I. Speech codes theory Speech codes theory is an account of communication as a deeply cultured
human activity. The theory, and the empirical research on which it is built, demonstrate that the kinds
of local knowledge people deploy to talk about to characterize, interpret, and rationalize their
communicative conduct is indeed local, particular knowledge, and that such knowledge can be
discovered and described through systematic inquiry. This article describes the key theoretical
commitments of speech codes theory, identifies its six propositions, illustrates research within the
tradition, and assesses its purposes. Speech codes theory was first published in prototypical form with
an introduction to the concept of speech codes and a presentation of four empirically grounded
principles about speech codes (Philipsen, 1992). Then it was presented as a formal theoretical
statement with five empirically grounded propositions, four of which were carried over intact from the
earlier version (Philipsen, 1997). Speech codes theory was created for two purposes. One purpose was
to distill some of what might be learned from a large body of fieldwork research on culturally
distinctive ways of speaking. When the first version of speech codes theory was written, there had
been established a large body of fieldwork about cultural ways of speaking that had been conducted
and published under the auspices of the ethnography of speaking (Hymes, 1968). Some 250 of these
studies were cited in

  • 2. Lollapalooza and The Alternative Music Culture Essay There have been many events in the course of music history that has shaped how what becomes popular and what is deemed proper in terms of music we should be consuming. In 1991, Lollapalooza, a multi city touring festival in the United States, highlighting alternative culture changed how music was consumed from there on forward. With the popularity of the festival and the highlighting of the alternative culture it represented the music industry took note, not long after the festival and explosion of alternative music hit mainstream music culture. New bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and bands who had been around awhile but had a smaller marginalized audiences such as the Red Hot Chili ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the purposes of this paper, alternative music culture while has a wide definition will be focused on the music culture that was evident in Los Angeles between about 1985 until it became more mainstream in 1991. This centre of the culture in LA is important because most of the important record companies were and still are, based out of LA, since there was this centre of culture decision makers it s not surprising that the city became a hot spot for musicians who wanted to become recognized. Also important is the sheer size of LA itself, any time you get a city as large as it is you get a wide variety of people living in a smaller area, communities come together and form various subgroups. One subgroup evident in LA at this time was those who fell outside the dominate music groups of the time, mainly, new wave, hip hop and hair metal (Mullen 2005). This subgroup was as varied as those who did not fall under the alternative heading, musically they could prescribe to anything from the funk roots of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the 70 s influenced rock of Jane s Addiction. More importantly the people who fell under the alternative culture felt like their voices were not being heard in the music that dominated the air waves at the time. It can be hypothesized that the alternative music culture in LA grew out of a rejection of the hyper masculine, misogynistic values of the hair metal scene that dominated LA and popular music culture for much of the 80 s. Maybe lovers, maybe complete strangers, but still in love with the idea of freedom and safety. Old black and white photos bring a kind uniqueness of perspective. Instead of seeing colors, you have to see and feel what the photographer sees and feels from taking the photo. This makes analyzing more interesting. The photo s purpose is, no matter how tough life gets, there is always love in the world. Half way around the world or in Times Square, love is infinite. The way the photographer structured this piece is compelling, just because of the contrast between them. He photographs rapid changing events ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Examples Of Animal Imagery In Miss Julie Miss Julie is a drama of paradoxes and reversals. It is a play by August Strindberg which is set on midsummer s Eve. It is a play that touches on symbols through animal imagery. These references to animals as Miss Julie shows the idea that human beings are the products of the forces surrounding them . Strindberg adopted animals to parallel characters and convey ideas dramatically which would be otherwise be kind of inappropriate with explicit representation of mortals. The animal imagery in this play demonstrates how society looks down upon the people they feel are inferior to them. I believe that August has given the audience a deeper understanding of the forces acting on the characters in Miss Julie through the use of animal imagery. I am discussing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This suddenly reveals the characters to both Julie and Jean himself. Strindberg decides to use animals to match characters and convey the meaning behind everyone s actions. He firstly uses stable yard to show a place Miss Julie and her ex husband were at and thus brings about a horse in mind. Here we get to see Miss Julie putting his ex husband in a horrible situation and treating him like a child. Teach a dog to jump [4] also shows how proud Miss Julie is and wants to show that class rules but Jean eventually shows that no matter what, whether rich or not men are superior to women when he takes control of the situation of Miss Julie and The bird. Even though Miss Julie wants to show that women too have a say in judgements, she is easily weakened by Jean flirts and cannot say any more. Strindberg uses Julie s dog, Diana which seems to serve as an epitome of Julie s fate or fortune. The dog get into an affair with a pug of the lower standing, the gatekeeper s pug . Using these antitheses foreshadows Julie and Jean where an aristocrat Julie escapes her social levels and has an affair with a commoner, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Who Would Have Thought That Soured Beer Who would have thought that soured beer would begin a study that would one day result in the discovery of several vaccines for deadly diseases? It all began when Bigo, a man who had manufactured beer from the sugar beet, went to see Pasteur. Louis Pasteur at the time was the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Lille in France. Bigo asked Pasteur if he could discover why some of his beer became sour. Louis Pasteur used a microscope to study the vats of soured beer. He discovered that there were microorganisms in the beer. Because Louis Pasteur explored the possibility that these microorganisms were causing what is called putrefaction, a process of organic breakdown, he discovered many important facts. One of which was that microorganisms existed. He went on to explore the possibility that these microorganisms, or microbes, can be found airborne. Even when his peers scoffed at his ideas, Louis continued with his work. After discovering these microbes in wine, milk, and silkworms, Louis Pasteur believed that these microbes could affect human beings, that they could cause diseases. ... Likewise Zimbardo s (1971) experiment, studying the way prisoners and guards interacted, demonstrated similar ethical failings, such as consent gained without individuals being made fully aware of the involvements; physical, emotional and psychological harm subjected; violation of rights, including privacy, respect, confidentiality and the ability to withdraw (). Fascinated by the volume of ordinary individuals who executed terrible things to others during WWII, Zimbardo predicted that all people, even the good, had the potential to conduct malevolence when sited in the correct environment (Haney et al, 1973). In a mock prison participants were recruited to play a role, half as prisoners and the rest as guards. Both were dressed accordingly, with the guards wearing a uniform with mirrored sunglasses which promotes anonymity as their emotions are obscured, but yet denotes their position of power and authority. According to Zimbardo (2000) these conditions of deindividuation allow for the facilitation of evil. Subsequently it becomes acceptable to enforce measures which degrade prisoners of their self respect, including being stripped, deloused and ordered to carry a chain around their ankle, whilst the mandatory wearing of a smock and a cap made from a stocking demoralized them as it impacted upon their masculinity. General McDonnell attempted to flank the Confederates by moving north and west, and began several attacks on the Confederates right flank and the center of the Confederate line at Henry House. As the battle wore on, the superior numbers of the Union Army began to wear down the Confederate lines. At a critical point, as the Confederates began to fall back, an officer pointed out a line of rebels who were still strong. He said, look at Jackson s men standing like a stone wall . He was talking about General T. J. Jackson s men. Jackson would from then on be known as Stonewall Jackson , one of the most famous of all Confederate generals. This seemed to inspire the Southern troops at Henry House who held their ground and began to beat back the Union forces. On the west flank the Union troops who had been moving slowly were pushed back by General Johnston s troops who arrived in the afternoon by railroad. • 10. The Safety Standards Of Mercury Mercury is extremely dangerous to humans due to its extreme conditions not suitable to human life. Missions to Mercury must be conducted with infallible safety standards to prevent incidents such as what has happened in the past. These safety standards must consider all possible circumstances in which measures must be taken. When doing missions on Mercury safety should be the number one priority. Before creating safety standards, it is important to first acknowledge issues and situations that has arisen in the past. Awhile back, a team of scientist were sent to complete a mission on Mercury. Accompanied with them was a robot that went by the name of Speedy. Speedy was a multifunctional robot built to assist the scientist with whatever they needed. Speedy was especially useful against Mercuries harsh conditions. He was able to maneuver the surface where humans could not. Before arriving on Mercury, the team knew they would need selenium in order to repair their photo cell banks. These banks are important in keeping the base on Mercury from burning up. Speedy was capable of retrieving this selenium, but was the only one capable of doing so. This is because he was the only robot sent with the team. The safety flaw in only having one robot to complete a life or death task is enormous. Standards at the time did not take into account flaws in technology. On the day of the mission, Speedy was sent out to retrieve the selenium. The scientist found it rather strange that he had not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout much of the story, Nathan Marx is lost between his role as a sergeant, Jew and human being. The relationship between the church, state and individual is a well known concept. The three must be independent of each other and this story explores what happens when the three are forced together. His religion starts the whole process of the three intertwining. The theme with Jewishness has much to do with Nathan Marx, the defender mentioned in the title. He unknowingly fights the good war against anti Semitism in the European theatre of war and comes back to train more soldiers against the Axis powers. In the process he cares for his Jewish trainees in terms of weekly rituals and diet and gives them leeway. Marx went out of his way to please Grossbart, in fact he even conflicted with his Captain on numerous occasions about food and combat. Grossbart was simply manipulating and abusing the religion for his own gain. When Marx realizes this, he once again fights back by sending him to the Pacific. The war and decisions made in boot camp were tough times for Marx, a lot like the suffering of Jews throughout history. Either way, he perseveres and wins both his battles against the Nazis, the ignorance of his colleagues and the manipulation of Grossbart. Although some may argue that race cannot be argued in Moby Dick, an article from The Massachusetts Review says, the novel is a a floating Babel of racial types (Bernard). The order of the Pequod demonstrates the hierarchy of race in the world at this time. Due to the focus on the whiteness of the whale , the broad mindedness of the characters, and the secondary position of the colored characters. The previous political and military leader of Japan had been the Tokugawa shogunate, but due to the intrusion of the western powers, particularly the Americans, under the command of Commodore Perry, the Shogun was forced to return power to the Emperor. This restoration of power led to many changes in Japanese society such as the social structure, the education system and the Japanese economy that has contributed to Japan becoming a modern world power. One of the biggest changes that happened in the Japanese society because of the Meiji Restoration was the change in social structure. Instead of being dictated their roles in life by the Tokugawa Shogunate, millions of people were free to choose their occupation and move without restrictions (AFA, 2014). The first step is recording the day to day or chronological transactions of a business (general journal) which is subsequently transferred to the general ledger that summarize all transactions occurring within a business to ensure that the total of all debit balances match the total of all credit balances. After the general ledger is being generated, the trial balance is prepared after all the transactions for the period have been journalized and posted to the General Ledger usually for a given period or month that list and total of all the debit and credit accounts for that period and usually a check and balance for the ... All humans in general are healthier thus living longer which means they are working longer periods in the business world. You are starting to hear more and more cases about age discrimination and big businesses are aware of this occurrence. Age discrimination can be the most harmful act to happen to a business. The Age Discrimination Act was passed in 1967; it states all workers who are 40 and older shall not be discriminated in recruitment, hiring, firing, salary, retirement and other practices. (SEC. 623. [Section 4]) Investigating charges and trying to work out solutions is done through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). (SEC. 633a. [Section 15]) Among all the various discrimination cases, age discrimination can be the most potentially damaging to a corporation. Congress has even noticed that age limits are being placed on certain jobs. This is ridiculous! If a person who is older is just as productive as they were why fire them. You can bring in a younger person to learn from the older person and save a lot of time and money because when you bring in a young person you need train them for their job. But if you use your resources and use the older worker you are killing two birds with one stone. • 31. Nunavut Environmental Change Greetings, my name is Syed Raza and today I am representing the provinces and the territories in North of Canada. We will be discussing about the predicted and current changes caused by global warming to the environment of Yukon, North West Territories and Nunavut. My aim is to discuss the top three important environmental changes for which Canada and its people need to develop adaptation plans. Well, surprisingly global average temperature has increased by 2C to 4C in the past 55 years. Moreover, the precipitation has increased the most in the north, rising by 61 percent in the Arctic Tundra and by 32 percent in the Arctic Mountains. Added to this, it is expected for the temperature to rise 2C more by 2020 and 4C by 2050, affecting the natural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ground temperatures in parts of the North are warming by one 10th of a degree after every ten years. Where ground ice contents are comparatively high, melting permafrost can have significant impacts, some of which may take not be as willingly obvious as others. On ice, you do not need a very sloped surface before you start to slip or slide and hence, that is what happens with the permafrost and overlying land, resulting in landslides in the North. Also, melting permafrost leads to subsidence, which occurs usually when permafrost thaws/melts and the soil formerly held up by the ice caves in. An example of this would be about Iqaluit s Arctic Winter Games arena, where the floor began to sink soon after the building opened in October 2001. It is predicted that permafrost area may decrease by approximately thirty seven to eighty one percent by the end of the century! As temperatures keep getting warmer, permafrost will continue to thaw. Moreover, changes in permafrost have unpleasant results for infrastructure designed for permafrost conditions. Eventually, pipelines, airstrips and roads need to be changed because they depend on permafrost for structural integrity. The estimated costs to upgrade and fix buildings or infra structure in Canada s North could range from $250 million to $420 million. All these current/predicted changes due to melting permafrost has resulted in a huge or major burden on the government resources.100 and 1000 of people in North Canada live on permafrost. Once the frozen water turns into water, it makes it quite difficult for the people in the towns to find drinking water. To conclude, melting permafrost in North Canada has resulted in landslides, subsidence, damage to infra structure and people are facing trouble in accessing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The government needed to respect the right for people to be secure in their persons, house, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures and not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause. The difference between today and eighteenth century is that many more situations have come up that weren t around during the eighteenth century. Firstly, BPA has economic implications as it is cheap and can be easily manufactured. Many alternatives are beginning to arise such as thermal paper for different types of printing that use BPA and glass and stainless steel that are being widely used in different consumer products, but BPA is cheaper and more efficient as products like plastic water bottles only cost about $4.99 while BPA Free water bottles cost $14.99 $20.00 (BeCause Water Benefit Corp, 2014). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would help give Arundel Partners an advantage while negotiating because studios would normally misprice the rights to be lower than actuality, since it is not normality for them to assign a value to sequel rights before the first film was in production. Through the use of a simple Net Present Value (NPV) calculation, we can determine the expected profitability of the hypothetical sequels in question. The NPV is calculated by discounting future cash inflows and outflows by a rate that is adjusted for riskiness of the investment, the required rate of return. In this case of purchasing movie sequel rights the discount rate is 15 percent. We are expecting to produce every film sequel that has a positive NPV, when computing the NPV of this investment decision in the first assumption. That is, every sequel that we predict to be profitable. However, we must take into account that we are buying the rights to all of the possible sequels, even if they are not profitable. When we sum up all of the positive NPVs, 25 in total, then we must divide that number by every film in which sequel rights were purchased, 99 total. Even if a sequel is deemed unprofitable and not produced, we have already purchased the rights it. This strategy would provide a positive NPV of $4.35. However, I would not have stereotyped my client, and assumed that for instance you may have even been laid a few times , which Sean states in the scene. Perhaps Will has never had intercourse? For me as a worker I would not assume things about an individual. I also would not as a worker self disclose in the extreme fashion that Sean does. I struggle with self disclosure in both my professional and personal life; I m a very private person. Despite the fact that I do not use self disclosure in my work, there is evidence that says it can be appropriate in some situations. For instance: workers who use interventions where they divulge their own experiences are more relaxed and responsive to their clients (Rosenbloom, 2001, p.1). Furthermore, there are circumstances where a comment made about the client s reality helps them move along in therapy. In the film, after the conversation in the park, Sean s remarks made Will take therapy more seriously (Rosenbloom, 2001, p.1). Lastly, research has found that a comment made about the workers personal life may trigger the client to discuss their own struggles. Following the scene on the park bench, the trust Will has gained for Sean is enough for Will to confide in him. Sean being vulnerable and real with Will about his personal struggles is what makes this possible (Rosenbloom, 2001, p.1). • 40. Speech Codes Theory Essay I. Speech codes theory Speech codes theory is an account of communication as a deeply cultured human activity. The theory, and the empirical research on which it is built, demonstrate that the kinds of local knowledge people deploy to talk about to characterize, interpret, and rationalize their communicative conduct is indeed local, particular knowledge, and that such knowledge can be discovered and described through systematic inquiry. This article describes the key theoretical commitments of speech codes theory, identifies its six propositions, illustrates research within the tradition, and assesses its purposes. Speech codes theory was first published in prototypical form with an introduction to the concept of speech codes and a presentation of four empirically grounded principles about speech codes (Philipsen, 1992). Then it was presented as a formal theoretical statement with five empirically grounded propositions, four of which were carried over intact from the earlier version (Philipsen, 1997). Speech codes theory was created for two purposes. One purpose was to distill some of what might be learned from a large body of fieldwork research on culturally distinctive ways of speaking. When the first version of speech codes theory was written, there had been established a large body of fieldwork about cultural ways of speaking that had been conducted and published under the auspices of the ethnography of speaking (Hymes, 1968).
