The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located in the back below the rib cage that filter blood and remove waste and excess water to produce urine. Inside each kidney are over a million tiny structures called nephrons that perform this filtering function. The urine travels through tubes called ureters from the kidneys to the bladder for storage until elimination.
