Understanding free-to-play games with the four pleasures modelEthan Levy
Game industry veteran and monetization design consultant Ethan Levy explains the importance of understanding how different player types enjoy different games. He then presents the 4 pleasures model as a mental framework for getting a holistic view of how different players enjoy different games, and explains how these 4 pleasures are at play in the games Candy Crush Saga, Demon's Souls and Call of Duty: Ghosts
This is an introduction of the "Cultural Probes" method by Gaver, Dunne and Pacenti. I have used it to encourage students to get inspiration from users.
• “Shallow Dive”
How they felt? What they said?
• “Deep Dive”
Draw what your
How the person approaches the fact that they have
diabetes ?
How they manage their condition within the context of
their everyday life?
How they might learn to change the way they manage it?

• ‘I’m addicted to sugar’ or ‘I want to have someone to talk to about this’.
