Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory, bilateral ectatic condition of the cornea that typically begins during puberty and progresses gradually. The exact causes are unknown, but theories include a developmental condition, degenerative process, hereditary dystrophy, or endocrine anomaly. Clinical features include blurred or distorted vision, colored halos, glare, photophobia, irregular astigmatism, myopia, Fleischer's ring, folds in the Descemet's membrane and Bowman's layer, Vogt's lines, and an oil droplet reflex seen on ophthalmoscopy.
