Series of blackouts encountered in recent years in power system have been occurred because either of voltage or angle instability or both together was not detected within time and progressive voltage or angle instability further degraded the system condition, because of increase in loading. This paper presents the real-time assessment methodology of voltage stability using Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) with observability of load buses only in power network. PMUs are placed at strategically obtained location such that minimum number of PMU’s can make all load buses observable. Data obtained by PMU’s are used for voltage stability assessment with the help of successive change in the angle of bus voltage with respect to incremental load, which is used as on-line voltage stability predictor (VSP). FLC based on static var compensator for power system transient stability enha...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Transient Stability is the capability of a system to be able to return to its normal state after experiencing large disturbances. The static var compensator (SVC) is a shunt device of the flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) family using power electronics to improve transient stability in power system. For the SVC control, it is usually used a PI controller, although PI controller is simpler and cheaper but not suitable when power system is subjected to transient stability since power system become non-linear system. In order to overcome this problem, the PI controller combined with Fuzzy controller is designed. Two types of faults were considered for this study to examine the effect of the fuzzy-SVC controller on system transient stability, the proposed fault types are single line to ground fault and three lines to ground fault. The performance and behavior of the designed fuzzy controller compared with that of the conventional PI controller in term of terminal voltage, rotor angle, and transmission line active power.
Enhancing Power Quality in Transmission System Using Fc-TcrIJMER
FACTS methodology is totally based on power electronics devices which are used to increase the transmission capability. To make the power system flexible, FACTS technology is used to attain entire control of power system i.e. transmission, distribution and generation. This paper is mainly concerned about the significance of Fixed Capacitor Thyristor Control Reactor (FC-TCR) acquiring automatic power and steady state voltage stability with the help of fuzzy logic controller. In transmission systems, the fuzzy rules are set to generate the required firing angle of FC-TCR to maintain a flat profile of steady state voltage and stability. The fundamental model is simulated in MATLAB along with the fuzzy logic control strategy. The results obtained are trust worthy and it can be used for controlling the voltage and reactive power in any electrical transmission system.
TRANSIENT STABILITY ENHANCEMENT BY USING DSSC AND PSSIAEME Publication
Synchronous operation of generators in power system is required to supply continuous electricity to customers. Proper transient stability must be maintained for stable operation of power system. To enhance the transient stability of power system FACTS or D-FACTS technology can be used. In this paper, Distributed Static Series Compensator (DSSC) which, belongs to D-FACTS technology is used to enhance the transient stability of two-machine system with Power System Stabilizer (PSS) as an auxiliary controller and it is found that DSSC along with PSS is able to maintain required transient stability during severe three-phase to ground fault.
Line Losses in the 14-Bus Power System Network using UPFCIDES Editor
Controlling power flow in modern power systems
can be made more flexible by the use of recent developments
in power electronic and computing control technology. The
Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is a Flexible AC
transmission system (FACTS) device that can control all the
three system variables namely line reactance, magnitude and
phase angle difference of voltage across the line. The UPFC
provides a promising means to control power flow in modern
power systems. Essentially the performance depends on proper
control setting achievable through a power flow analysis
program. This paper presents a reliable method to meet the
requirements by developing a Newton-Raphson based load
flow calculation through which control settings of UPFC can
be determined for the pre-specified power flow between the
lines. The proposed method keeps Newton-Raphson Load Flow
(NRLF) algorithm intact and needs (little modification in the
Jacobian matrix). A MATLAB program has been developed to
calculate the control settings of UPFC and the power flow
between the lines after the load flow is converged. Case studies
have been performed on IEEE 5-bus system and 14-bus system
to show that the proposed method is effective. These studies
indicate that the method maintains the basic NRLF properties
such as fast computational speed, high degree of accuracy and
good convergence rate.
Transient Stability Evaluation of the Power Generation under a Blackout Condi...theijes
An operational condition of a power system is able to affect to stability performances after disturbed by a certain fault on the interconnection system. Moreover, this fault also gives impact to the blackout situation created by a large disturbance as disconnecting back bone lines of the interconnection system. In detail, this case is presented in this paper for evaluating transient stability performances of generating units while producing energy for the load center online the power system operation with the blackout situation designed using a branch tripping method. Furthermore, the transient stability responses are subjected to the power generation of the electric power system in Malang Raya as a real system operation for interacting the generating and demand sites. Results obtained show that voltage changes of Wlingi power station is 0.944 pu to 0.946 pu and its overshoot is 0,962. But the other overshoot of the power generation in Sutami remained to 0.968 pu at 0.5 second after appearing a blackout fault and its voltage increase to 0.952 pu from 0.948 pu at the final stable position.
Fuzzy and predictive control of a photovoltaic pumping system based on three-...journalBEEI
In this work, an efficient control scheme for a double stage pumping system is proposed. On the DC side, a three-level boost converter is employed to maximize the photovoltaic power and to step-up the DC-link voltage. For maximum power point tracking, the classical incremental conductance method is substituted by a fuzzy logic controller. The designed controller estimates the optimal step size which speeds up the tracking process and improves the accuracy of the extracted photovoltaic power. Afterwards, the voltages across the three-level boost converter (TLBC) capacitors are balanced by phase shifting the applied duty ratios. On the motor pump side, a two-level inverter drives the motor pump with the cascaded nonlinear predictive control. The predictive controller is preferred over the conventional field-oriented control because it accelerates the torque response and resists to the change of the engine parameters. The designed controllers are evaluated using MATLAB/Simulink, and compared with the conventional controllers (incremental conductance algorithm and field-oriented control). The robust control scheme of the entire system has increased the hydraulic power by up to 23% during the system start-up and up to 10% in steady state.
Advanced deep flux weakening operation control strategies for IPMSM IJECEIAES
This paper proposes an advanced flux-weakening control method to enlarge the speed range of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). In the deep flux weakening (FW) region, the flux linkage decreases as the motor speed increases, increasing instability. Classic control methods will be unstable when operating in this area when changing load torque or reference speed is required. The paper proposes a hybrid control method to eliminate instability caused by voltage limit violation and improve the reference velocity-tracking efficiency when combining two classic control methods. Besides, the effective zone of IPMSM in the FW is analyzed and applied to enhance stability and efficiency following reference velocity. Simulation results demonstrate the strength and effectiveness of the proposed method.

OPTIMAL TORQUE RIPPLE CONTROL OF ASYNCHRONOUS DRIVE USING INTELLIGENT CONTROL...elelijjournal
The dynamic performance of an asynchronous machine when operated with cascaded Voltage Source Inverter using Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique is presented in this paper. A classical model of Induction Motor Drive based on Direct Torque Control (DTC) method is considered which displays
appreciable run-time operation with very simple hysteresis control scheme. Direct control of the torque and flux variables is achieved by choosing suitable inverter voltage space vector from a lookup table. Under varying torque conditions the performance of the drive system is verified using MATLAB/Simulink software tool. The ripple content in the torque parameter is significant when traditional PI controller and Fuzzy approach are configured in the proposed system. Finally, by replacing the PI-Fuzzy controller with Hybrid Controller the torque ripple minimization can be achieved during no-load and loaded conditions.
These slides explain about MPPT control and different approaches for wind generation system. Later I will show the comparative results with MATLAB simulation.
In this paper, the voltage stability of the power system is studied during fault conditions. Enhancement of the system’s stability will be achieved by utilizing Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) controllers at the best place in the system. The optimum placement of (FACTS) controllers occurred on the most affected bus by the fault in the system (weakest bus). Two approaches have been used in this study to effectively obtain the best location of the (FACTS) controllers in the system. The first method is based on computing the deviation which occurs in the active power and reactive power due to the fault at each load bus at a time. Whereas the second method is performed through exploiting a MATLAB fuzzy set technique utilizing two indices: Line Flow Index (LFI) and Voltage Profile Index (VPI) during fault and steady-state conditions. The results show that both of these indices resulted in the same bus as the best location. Remedial actions in the attempt at improving in the stability of the power system are discussed taking the advantage of using (FACTS) compensation (SVC) and (STATCOM) at the most vulnerable system buses. In this work, MATLAB program with an IEEE 24 bus system is examined.

Enhancement of Power System Dynamics Using a Novel Series Compensation SchemeIJMER
Phase imbalanced capacitive compensation is a “hybrid” series compensation scheme, where the
series capacitive compensation in one phase is created using a single-phase TCSC in series with a fixed capacitor
(Cc), and the other two phases are compensated by fixed series capacitors (C). The TCSC control is initially set
such that its equivalent compensations at the power frequency combined with the fixed capacitor yield a
resultant compensation equal to the other two phases. Thus, the phase balance is maintained at the power
frequency while at any other frequency, a phase imbalance is created. The effectiveness of the scheme in damping
power system oscillations for various network conditions, namely different system faults and tie-line power flows is
evaluated using the MATLAB/SIMULINK Software

This paper presents a comprehensive survey of DSTATCOM control strategies put forward recently. It is
aimed at providing a broad perspective on the status of DSTATCOM control methods to researchers and
application engineers dealing with harmonic suppression issues. Many control techniques have been
designed, developed, and realized for active filters in recent years. The proposed DSTATCOM consists of a
three-leg Voltage Source Converter (VSC) with a dc bus capacitor. The PV array or battery operated boost
converter is proposed to maintain the dc link voltage of the dc bus capacitor for continuous compensation

extracting the reference currents to control the proposed DSTATCOM. The two control methods are
Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) theory and IcosΦ algorithm. The performance of the DSTATCOM is
validated using MATLAB software with its simulink and Power System Block set (PSB) toolboxes. The
simulation results for the two control methods are compared to validate the superior performance of the

STATCOM is one of the shunt type FACTS controllers which can supply reactive power and improve bus voltage. STATCOM, a controlling device used on alternating current transmission networks, has advantages like transient free switching and smooth variation of reactive power. This paper proposes a cascaded multilevel inverter type DSTATCOM and DVR to compensate voltage sag in utilities in power distribution network. The proposed DSTATCOM is implemented using multilevel topology with isolated dc energy storage and reduced number of switches. A DVR injects a voltage in series with the system voltage and a D-STATCOM implant a current into the system to correct the voltage sag, swell and interruption. The phase shifter PWM technique is described to generate firing pulse to cascaded inverter. The proposed neuro-fuzzy controller follow itself to the sag and provides effective means of mitigation. The voltage sag with the minimum harmonic at the efficacy end. The proposed technique is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink.

SRF THEORY BASED STATCOM FOR COMPENSATION OF REACTIVE POWER AND HARMONICSIAEME Publication
The power electronic devices like converters and inverters inject harmonic currents into AC
system due to their non linear characteristics. These devices draw high amount of reactive power
from source. The commencement of Nonlinear Load into the ac power system will have the effect of
harmonics. The presence of harmonics in system it will effected with power quality problems. Due
to this high amount of power losses and disoperation of power electronics devices is caused, along
with this Harmonics have a number of undesirable effects like Voltage disturbances. These
harmonics are needed to mitigate for Power Quality Enhancement in distributed system. Here the
device called STATCOM is one of the FACTS Devices which can be used to mitigate the harmonics
and reactive power compensation. The voltage source converter is core of the STATCOM and the
hysteresis current control is indirect method of controlling of VSC. In this paper we implement with
SRF based STATCOM control. SRF theory is implemented for the generation of controlling
reference current signals for controller of STATCOM. The Matlab\Simulink based model is
developed and simulation results are showed for linear and nonlinear load conditions.

Voltage profile Improvement Using Static
Synchronous Compensator STATCOM
Mohammed Y. Suliman
Technical Power Engineering Dept., Northern Technical University, Ndola, Zambia
Abstract—Static synchronous compensator (STATCOM)
is a regulating device used in AC transmission systems as
a source or a sink of reactive power. The most widely
utilization of the STATCOM is in enhancing the voltage
stability of the transmission line. A voltage regulator is a
FACTs device used to adjust the voltage disturbance by
injecting a controllable voltage into the system. This
paper implement Nruro-Fuzzy controller to control the
STATCOM to improve the voltage profile of the power
network. The controller has been simulated for some
kinds of disturbances and the results show improvements
in voltage profile of the system. The performance of
STATCOM with its controller was very close within 98%
of the nominal value of the busbar voltage.

I. INTRODUCTION
Power quality is defined of electrical limits that permit the
part of equipment to function in its intended manner
without loss of performance or life expectancy. The
electrical device like electric motor, a transformer,
generator, computer, printer, communication equipment,
or a house hold machine. All of these devices react
negatively to power quality, depending on the severity of
the problems. Reactive power cannot be transmitted
across large power angle even with essential the
magnitude of voltage gradient [1]. instability of Voltage
may cause partial or complete interruption in the power
system. STATCOM is a voltage-source inverter (VSI)
based shunt device generally used in transmission and
distribution system to improve power quality. The main
advantage of STATCOM is that, it has a very
sophisticated power electronics based control which can
efficiently regulate the current injection into the
distribution bus [2]. The second advantage is that, it has
multifarious applications, e.g. I. cancelling the effect of
poor load power factor, ii. Suppressing the effect of
harmonic content in load currents, iii. Regulating the
voltage of distribution bus against sag/swell etc.,
compensating the reactive power requirement of the load
and so on [3]. STATCOM with an energy source on the
DC side, it is advisable to control both the magnitude and
phase angle of the injected voltage by the VSC in order to
control the active power and reactive power output. A
shunt compensator enables to mitigate voltage
fluctuations at the point of common coupling (PCC) [4].
II. COMPENSATION AND VOLTAGE
REGULATION
The principle and theoretical effects of shunt reactive
power compensation in AC system for voltage regulation
are shown in figure 1. This includes a source (V1), a
power line and a typical inductive load. Figure 1a, shows
the system without compensation and it is related to the
phasor diagram. In the phasor diagram, the phase angle of
the current has been related to the load side, this means
that the active current (IP) is in phase with the load
voltage (V2). Since the load assumed inductive requires
reactive power for suitable operation and hence, the
source must supply it; thus increasing the current from the
generator and through power lines. If reactive power is
supplied near the load, the line current can reduce power
losses and improve voltage regulation at the load
terminals [5]. This can be done in three ways: 1) with a
capacitor [6]; 2) with a voltage source inverter [7]; or 3)
with a current source inverter [8]. In figure1b, a current-
source device is used to compensate the reactive
component of the load current by inject/absorb current
(IC) to/from system. As a result, the system voltage
regulation is improved and the reactive current
component from the source is reduced or almost
eliminated. If the load needs leading compensation, then
an inductor would be required. In addition, a current
source or a voltage source can be used for inductive shunt
compensation.
The STATCOM is providing voltage support under large
system disturbances during which the voltage excursions
would be well outside of the linear operating range of the
compensator. The main advantage of using voltage or
current-source Var generators (instead of inductors or
capacitors) is that the reactive power generated is
independent of the voltage at the point of connection as
shown in figure 2 [9].

III. MEASURING LINE VOLTAGE AND
REACTIVE POWER
For measuring active and reactive power, d-q theory was
used. This theory is based on time-Domain, and it is valid
for operation in steady-state or transient state, as well as
for generic voltage and current power system waveforms,
allowing to control the active power filters in real-time.
Another important characteristic of this theory is the
simplicity of the calculations, which involves algebraic
calculation exception to the need of separating the mean
and alternated values of the calculated power component
[10]. The d-q theory performs a transformation known as
“park transformation” of a stationary reference system of
coordinates a-b-c to d-q rotating coordinates[11].The
transform applied to time-domain voltages in the natural
frame (i.e. va, vb and vc) is as follows:
Where is the angle between the rotating and fixed
coordinate system at each time and θ the phase shift of the
voltage. Then the active and reactive power compensated

The measured voltage is:
IV. CONTROL SCHEME OF STATCOM
The block diagram of STATCOM control system is
shown in Figure 4. The three phase line voltages are
sensed then filtered to eliminate high frequency noise and
the quadrature voltage components (vd and vq) the are
calculated by park transformations. The measured voltage
is calculated and works as a feedback for the closed loop
control system. The measured voltage is compared with
the reference voltage of the busbar ( set point ) vref to
generate error signals verorr. This error signal is processed
in the controller where:

V. FUZZUY CONTROL SYSTEM
Fuzzy systems are suitable for uncertain or approximate
reasoning, especially for the system with mathematical
model that is difficult to derive. Fuzzy logic controllers
play an important role in many practical applications.
There are many fuzzy inference mechanisms in fuzzy
logic control system from which Takagi-Sugeno is chosen
in this study. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) will
be used in this study to tune the membership functions of
the TS fuzz-like-PI controller. The TS fuzzy controller
have a highly non-linear variable gain controller. it
produces wide variations of the controller gain. Arbitrary
selection of these parameters may lead to an adequate
system response or instability [12]. First the controller
build using mamdani-type then transfer it to TS fuzzy
type to get a better system response by using Neuro-
Fuzzy system to adapt the fuzzy system parameters and
rules by employing ANN learning algorithm. Since it
combines the fuzzy qualitative approach with the adaptive
learning capabilities of the neural network, such a system
can be trained without a great amount of expert
knowledge usually required for the standard fuzzy logic
[13]. As a result, the rule-base can be reduced.
The parameters of the input and output membership
functions are to be determined during the training stage.
The designed Fuzzy system consists of five layers, each
layer has either fixed nodes (that have no parameters to be
tuned) that have parameters to be tuned during training.
The output of the five layers which emulate the fuzzy
system design steps is given as follows, referring to [14]
for more details. The objective of the learning algorithm
is to adjust the parameters of the input and output
membership functions so that the ANFIS output best
matching the training data. A hybrid learning strategy
(Gradient Descent-GD and Lease Squares Estimate-LSE)
is applied to identify the network parameters. The GD
method updates the antecedent membership function
parameters. In this work The input universe of discourse
is split into 5 gaussian membership function with 50%
overlapping, therefore, for two inputs (error and Δerror),
25-control rule consequent linear functions need to be
determined as shown in Figure 5. To tune the TS rules
using ANFIS, two sets of data are to be generated. The
input data is a vector of the Verror and ΔVerror the output m
the modulation index. Figure6 shows the validation test of
Fuzzy logic system. This procedure is performed using
the GUI of ANFIS file included in the MATLAB/FUZZY
Logic Toolbox.

VI. SIMULATION STUDY
System consists of feeder with two branches changeable
load. the STATCOM system installed in busbar 2 (BB2)
to compensate the voltage in BB2. the test start by change
the load and measure the load voltage at BB2 without
compensation as shown in figure 10. From the result it
can be notice that the drop voltage increased
proportionally with increasing the load, the maximum
drop was 0.94 pu between 0.6 and 0.8 sec. Figure 11
shows the action of STATCOM to compensate the load
voltage where the voltage at BB2 was restored and
mitigate the drop voltage from 0.94 to 0.985 pu, this
compensation done by inject compensated voltage
VSTATCOM with respect to the phase voltage as shown in
Figure 12. Figure 13 shows the p-v curve, it can notice
that the voltage with STATCOM more stable and
enhanced the stability margin. To investigate the
performance of the proposed intelligent controller under
the step change of the load condition, a PI controller is
used for the sake of comparison. Figure 14 shows the
results of the system response to step change in rms of
the line voltage. From the results it is clear that the Fuzzy
controller has a smoother in response and reaches the
steady state faster than the conventional PI controller.

VII. CONCLUSION
In this paper a three phase PWM STATCOM with its
controller has been inserted in the feeder system and some
disturbances has been studied via modeling and
simulation. The simulation results have shown that the
STATCOM with the proposed controller can improve the
voltage profile of the power system during the
disturbances. A STATCOM model has been developed
with all the necessary components and controllers in order
to demonstrate its effectiveness in maintaining a fast
voltage regulation at load bus bar. The simulation results
were compared with and without compensation. The
results have proved the ability of the STATCOM to
restore the load voltage for increased the load with
satisfactory performance. The performance of
STATCOM with its controller was very close (within
98%) of the nominal value of the busbar voltage. In these
