Harley Davidson implemented a Just-in-Time (JIT) system to replace their traditional batch production process. This allowed them to reduce inventory levels by 75%, scrap and rework by 25%, productivity up 50%, and space requirements down 68%. Under JIT, Harley Davidson uses a pull system with small lot sizes and short setup and lead times compared to the previous push system with large inventories, lot sizes, and long setup times. The implementation of JIT required close coordination between Harley Davidson and suppliers as well as maintaining low inventories which can be challenging when filling large orders.
