This document provides guidelines for combining independent clauses into grammatically correct sentences, including using coordinating conjunctions, semicolons, colons, and subordinating one clause to the other. Some examples given are joining clauses with "and", using a semicolon to connect closely related ideas, and using a colon when the second clause explains or elaborates on the first.

4.  A fused sentence occurs when two
independing clauses are joined with-out any

saliries some are paid millions of dollars a
year

5.  Use a comma and a coordinating conjuntion
to create a complete sentence
 Use a semicolon , alone or with a conjuntive
adverb or a transitional phrase , to create a
complete sentence
 Subordinate one clause to the other
 Rewrite the sentences as one indepent clause
 Use a colon when the second clause explains
or ilustrates the first

7. Semicolon alone
Only if the ideas in the clauses are closely and
clearly related.
A.g for years the federal communitations
commission has advocated legislation to
allow competitive auctions for broadcast ; so
far congress has refused

8. Adding a colon
 Use a colon to join two independent clauses
when the second clause explains elaborates ,
or illustrates the first
 A.g my mother gave me one important piece
of advise : never wear stripes with plaids
