Abstract—A novel approach to irrigation modeling is presented: the locale specific machine learning of soil moisture data. The merits of this new patent pending technique are clear when compared to existing methods, such as the AquaCrop program created by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). From a case study on the comparative performance of AquaCrop and machine learning in the extrapolative modeling of soil moisture, AquaCrop performed with a mean squared error of 0.00165 whereas the machine learning received 0.00013, an order of magnitude lower. In addition, a novel algorithm, the ConserWater™ algorithm, has been created for the purpose of machine learning soil moisture with accuracy and efficiency. The performance of the algorithm is very superior when compared to other popular machine learning techniques, as applied to soil moisture. Finally, to allow this technology to reach agriculturalists at the grassroots level, the entire world has been machine learned and the resultant models have been encapsulated into a lightweight easy-to-use smartphone application.
The ExtremeEarth project develops geospatial analytics techniques and technologies that scale to the petabytes of big Copernicus data, information and knowledge, and applies these technologies in two of the thematic exploitation platforms of the European Space Agency: Food Security and Polar.

Supervised machine learning based dynamic estimation of bulk soil moisture us...eSAT Journals
Abstract In this paper artificial neural network based sensor informatics architecture has been investigated; including proposed continuous daily estimation of area wise surface soil moisture using cosmic ray sensor’s neutron count time series. Study was conducted based on cosmic ray data available from two Australian locations. The main focus of this study was to develop a data driven approach to convert neutron counts into area wise ground surface soil moisture estimates. Independent surface soil moisture data from the Australian Water Availability Project (AWAP) was used as ground truth. A comparative study using five different types of neural networks, namely, Feed Forward Back Propagation (FFBPN), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLPN), Radial Basis Function (RBFN), Elman (EN), and Probabilistic networks (PNN) was conducted to evaluate the overall soil moisture estimation accuracy. Best performance from the Elman network outperformed all other neural networks with 94% accuracy with 92% sensitivity and 97% specificity based on Tullochgorum data. Overall high accuracy proved the effectiveness of the Elman neural network to estimate surface soil moisture continuously using cosmic ray sensors. This work proposes a feature-based technique to recognize vehicle types within day and night times. Support vector machine (SVM) classifier is applied on image histogram and CENsus Transformed
histogRam Oriented Gradient (CENTROG) features in order to classify vehicle types during the day and night. Thermal images were used for the night time experiments. Although thermal images suffer from low image resolution, lack of colour and poor texture information, they offer the advantage of being unaffected by high intensity light sources such as vehicle headlights which tend to render normal images unsuitable
for night time image capturing and subsequent analysis. Since contour is useful in shape based categorisation and the most distinctive feature within thermal images, CENTROG is used to capture this feature information and is used within the experiments. The experimental results so obtained were
compared with those obtained by employing the CENsus TRansformed hISTogram (CENTRIST). Experimental results revealed that CENTROG offers better recognition accuracies for both day and night times vehicle types recognition.
