2. We don’t appreciate what we’re
losing.
Fewer than 15% of species on
earth have been catalogued.
We need
something
new
40% of the world’s plant species
are at risk of extinction.
4. Satellite imagery:
Prices are falling and accuracy is increasing
Coverage of remote, non-contiguous, inaccessible spaces on any scale
On-ground measurement:
Our unique ground truthing data sets allows us to train
our machine learning algorithms quickly and with a
very high rate of accuracy.
Hyperspectral images:
Highly resolution images with multispectral colour bands allow accurate
measurement of habitat types and biodiversity, e.g. identification of plant
species, vegetation condition monitoring, etc.
5. Prevalence in Gentian Data:
Moderate(15% decline in
observations since 2010)
Croton lechleri:
Source: 2016 Observation
Conservation Status:
Unassessed
We combine the latest machine learning technology and satellite
optical imagery to create disruptive new services to enhance and
support natural resources and green urban spaces.
Gentian : Understanding
our world through AI and
Earth Observation
6. Kick off
• We started with controlled environments: green roofs, and other sources of
urban biodiversity data which we were able to develop thanks to our highly
detailed on-ground data collection.
• European Space Agency funding for proof-of-concept.
• Early uptake of our green roof detection and retrofit services by a number of
local authorities and private actors, creating an immediate revenue stream.
7. Where we are
• Pre-commercial development phase - “Product to Market fit”
• Our algorithms are easily transferable to a wide range of applications
• Gentian enables organisations to get a baseline of their urban green factor,
habitat types or biodiversity measurements
• Our data supports urban planning and development, decision and policy-
making, insurance pricing, monitoring and evaluation.
• Diversify into other areas: agriculture, environmental protection, biosolar
retrofits, rainwater runoff, carbon sequestration.
8. Where we’re going
• Industry leader for GIS mapping for biodiversity, vegetation condition, habitat type with
special unique selling point of urban green infrastructure detection.
• Build a comprehensive dataset of information on biodiversity, species prevalence, areas at
risk, environmental damage.
• Explore new business cases: military/legal applications, pharmaceutical potential,
standardised E&M, science based targets, sustainability metrics.
• Disrupt the market with innovative new services based on satellite data.
