ExtremeEarth is a H2020 project that aims to develop extreme data analytics techniques using big Copernicus data and apply these technologies to food security and polar use cases. The project involves 11 partners from 7 countries and has a budget of ~6 million Euro over 36 months. It will integrate artificial intelligence and deep learning methods to extract information from Copernicus satellite imagery for applications in monitoring crop growth/yield and sea ice conditions. The food security use case will generate water availability maps for irrigation management while the polar use case focuses on automated regional sea ice charts for maritime safety.

Because of insufficient accessible arable land, intensive farming has been linked to excessive accumulation of phosphorous, heavy metals, and other soil contaminants, as well as to significant groundwater pollution with nitrate. Deterioration of soil water quality is especially worrying at the bioclimatic Mediterranean area, especially under the current context of climate change. Hence, it is necessary to develop a common body of knowledge, shared at the local and regional levels of the countries involved and affected, so as to allow an effective monitoring of cropping systems, fertilization and water demands, and impacts of climate change, with a focus on the sustainability and the protection of the physical environment.
In this presentation, we describe AgriBigCAT, an online software platform that combines geophysical information from various diverse sources, together with big data analysis, in order to estimate the impact of the agricultural sector on the environment, considering land, water, biodiversity and natural areas requiring protection, such as forests and wetlands. Based on the P-Sphere project, this platform intends to promote more sustainable agriculture, by designing and developing an information and knowledge-based platform, using a big data approach for managing and analyzing a wide range of geospatial and mainstream information, which can be accessible by standard communication technologies such as the internet/web and mobile apps. this platform can also assist both the farmers' decision-taking processes and the administration planning and policy making, with the ultimate objective of meeting the challenge of increasing food production at a lower environmental impact.

World aquaculture production continues to grow and now provides half of all fish for human consumption (FAO, 2016a), but its sustainability is being impacted by climate change, competition for space and natural resources, pollution and environmental degradation. Effective management of the sector requires appropriate and accessible data to inform management decisions. Satellite earth observation technology has developed rapidly in the past five years, with numerous advances in spatial resolution, spectral information, frequency of observation, and cost-effectiveness (open data). The information can inform aquaculture development (strategic planning, zonation and site suitability), aquaculture practice and management (inventory, status, monitoring of the environment and monitoring at the farm level), and aquaculture risk management (disaster risk management, response, recovery, monitoring and assessment). While the growing volume of satellite data represents a unique opportunity for aquaculture, it also poses a major challenge to achieve its full potential in terms of extracting valuable management information. A variety of big-data platforms currently seek to address these issues by bringing together satellite data, environmental data, and analytics processing systems. These platforms include the European Space Agency funded Coastal and Food Security Platforms and Google’s Earth Engine. Each platform has a variety of benefits which are discussed.

Geospatial analysis offers large potential for better understanding, modelling and visualizing our natural and artificial ecosystems, using Internet of Things as a pervasive sensing infrastructure. This presentation performs a review of research work based on the IoT, in which geospatial analysis has been employed in environmental informatics. Six different geospatial analysis methods have been identified, presented together with 26 relevant IoT initiatives adopting some of these techniques. Analysis is performed in relation to the type of IoT devices used, their deployment status and data transmission standards, data types employed, and reliability of measurements. This paper scratches the surface of this combination of technologies and techniques, providing indications of how IoT, together with geospatial analysis, are currently being used in the domain of environmental research.

Copernicus is one of the largest Earth Observation data providers. Copernicus’ archives are growing data repositories containing a wealth of data and information that is of utmost importance for policy support and many economic and industrial domains.
AI needs vast amounts of data to be developed. AI works by identifying patterns in available data and then applying this knowledge to new data. The larger the data set is, the better AI can learn and discover. Bringing AI technologies that scale at the Petabyte level to Copernicus operations is an opportunity that Europe shall seize to maximise return on investment and to develop a new generation of products and services based on Copernicus data assets.
This workshop will present EU programmes, challenges and opportunities to connect Copernicus, its data assets and stakeholders to the digital world.

Since the loophole-free Bell experiments of 2020 and the Nobel prizes in physics of 2022, critics of Bell's work have retreated to the fortress of super-determinism. Now, super-determinism is a derogatory word - it just means "determinism". Palmer, Hance and Hossenfelder argue that quantum mechanics and determinism are not incompatible, using a sophisticated mathematical construction based on a subtle thinning of allowed states and measurements in quantum mechanics, such that what is left appears to make Bell's argument fail, without altering the empirical predictions of quantum mechanics. I think however that it is a smoke screen, and the slogan "lost in math" comes to my mind. I will discuss some other recent disproofs of Bell's theorem using the language of causality based on causal graphs. Causal thinking is also central to law and justice. I will mention surprising connections to my work on serial killer nurse cases, in particular the Dutch case of Lucia de Berk and the current UK case of Lucy Letby.

Intravital microscopy (IVM) is a powerful tool utilized to study cellular behavior over time and space in vivo. Much of our understanding of cell biology has been accomplished using various in vitro and ex vivo methods; however, these studies do not necessarily reflect the natural dynamics of biological processes. Unlike traditional cell culture or fixed tissue imaging, IVM allows for the ultra-fast high-resolution imaging of cellular processes over time and space and were studied in its natural environment. Real-time visualization of biological processes in the context of an intact organism helps maintain physiological relevance and provide insights into the progression of disease, response to treatments or developmental processes.
In this webinar we give an overview of advanced applications of the IVM system in preclinical research. IVIM technology is a provider of all-in-one intravital microscopy systems and solutions optimized for in vivo imaging of live animal models at sub-micron resolution. The system’s unique features and user-friendly software enables researchers to probe fast dynamic biological processes such as immune cell tracking, cell-cell interaction as well as vascularization and tumor metastasis with exceptional detail. This webinar will also give an overview of IVM being utilized in drug development, offering a view into the intricate interaction between drugs/nanoparticles and tissues in vivo and allows for the evaluation of therapeutic intervention in a variety of tissues and organs. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy refers to absorption spectroscopy or reflect spectroscopy in the UV-VIS spectral region.
Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy is an analytical method that can measure the amount of light received by the analyte.
Bringing the existing methods and tools that VISTA can provide to the big- or wide-scale, as well as combining both sides, the medium- and high-resolution satellite processing and modelling apporaches together in one application.
Aim for EE: big scale, i.e. spatially from single fields (farm-level) to entire agricultural area in watershed, temporally from solely vegetation season to year-round monitoring.
Bring together VISTA’s satellite processing/ modelling techniques for agriculture applications running on the Food Security TEP and hydrology/cryosphere applications running on the Polar TEP.
To achieve the objective, the satellite processing chains togehter with Vista‘s land surface processes model PROMET will be joined with information on field boundaries and advanced crop type classifications, which will be derived with deep learning techniques developed by the University of Trento.

The final water availability information will be shared with interested farmers and will be visualised and made available as a collection in the FS-TEP (no download), as well as as linked data with other geospatial layers using the Sextant tool of partner UoA.
