Jerome Bruner developed a theory on scaffolding to enable children to learn emerging in 1976 as part of his social constructivist theory. Bruner believed that learning is an active process in which students construct new ideas or concepts based upon their current and past knowledge. His theory focused on how instruction can be used to scaffold and support a child's efforts to gain new skills, knowledge, and abilities.
