Urban design is a technique and knowledge seeking to organize and improve urban qualities
and increase the quality of citizenship life. Based on the perspectives and objectives of urban design, the
dominant intention in all urbanism activities is to reach high humanistic and social dimensions. In fact,
what give meaning to a city are the social aspects raised in recent urban activities, in addition to the
physical and visual body of it. Over the past decade the quality of the walking environment has become
a significant factor in transportation planning and design in developed countries. It is argued that the
pedestrians’ environment has been ignored in favors of automobile. The purpose of this study was to
examine the effects of walkability on property values and investment returns. Research method is
descriptive. The method of collected data is field. Also, were used questionnaire tools in order to
collecting data. On the other hand, was referred to municipality 9 region due to, studied area was
located in this urban region.
In continue, was used SWOT technique in order to analyzing questionnaire. At finally, proposed

A Behavioral Observation of Street Liveliness in Meldrum Walk, Johor Bahru of...drboon
On Malaysian streets nowadays, main priority is given to vehicular elements, which seems to comprise the functional qualities of urban public space for human interaction. To perk up such streets, “pedestrianisation” results in making a city centre pedestrian- friendly, and expedites the preservation of historical districts. Problem statement: Existence of people engaging in a variety of sustained and social activities can makes a street lively. Approach: As liveliness involves levels of activities, uses, interactions and their representation, current research appraises street liveliness through behavioral observation of sustained pedestrians’ activities in Meldrum Walk. Result: The data on traffic modes, walking and sustained pedestrians of diverse age groups and genders, different types of activities, postures, over different times of day and night analyzed. Conclusion: Proposing a wider range of attractions and opportunities for activities besides walking, working and shopping for users of different age groups and capability - which would qualify the environment and lead to elaborate the liveliness of such streets, is recommended.

Pune the second largest city of Maharashtra state of Indian union is witnessing large scale urban sprawl and its
negative ramifications in last couple of decades. Urban sprawl is defined as dispersed and discontinuous
suburban land development associated with low population densities and high auto dependence. This
phenomenon is adversely affecting sustainability of the city because of its negative environmental, social and
economic impacts. It saps local resources, destroys open space and farmland, and increases the energy
consumption of mobility by promoting long travel distances. Another problem is high levels of traffic
congestion and harmful emissions causing environmental pollution. There is a plethora of research that sought
to address the issue of urban sustainability and combat sprawl; little has been done on developing analytical
tools that could be used to assess the future of urban sustainability for Indian cities and for Pune in particular.
This paper explores that how particular land use development patterns or the expansion of the current urban
transportation infrastructure are likely to impact urban sustainability.

the urban mobility in Kathmandu Valley is very bad. Perception of the people is gathered through the
questionnaire from people of Kathmandu. Various indicators are grouped in six categories namely -
environmental criteria, social/cultural sustainability, economic criteria,
infrastructure/engineering/technological, institutional sustainability and good governance. Questionnaire survey
was conducted to assess the people’s perception of three districts of Kathmandu Valley. This study deals the
people’s perception. Finding of the study will be useful for developing the sustainability criteria for urban
transportation and consider the various policy decision regarding the efficient mobility of Kathmandu Valley.
Finding shows that mobility situation of Kathmandu Valley is not good and indicates the need of improvement.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, governments are challenged by dramatic increases in the frequency of chronic diseases, obesity and sedentary lifestyles caused majorly by physical inactivity.In order to lessen such complications, urban designers and architects strive to create open spaces and streets that encourage walking, bicycling, and other forms of active recreation.This paper aims at evaluating “Ahl Misr” Promenade created at the Nile River banks, Cairo city, Egypt, in terms of the vision guiding the design, design features, environmental aspects, promenade management, and funding channels. The study concentrates on exploring the extent to which the trail succeeded in offering venues for cycling, walking, running and stretching, as to participate in enhancing the public health in a city suffering from scarcity of open spaces. Observation of the existing activities and a physical survey are adopted. The results show that the tail is a positive stage towards the goal; nevertheless, the local authority predominating decisions and management policies are crippling the trail from fulfilling its potentials.

Studies related to the growth of the transportation networks from the second half of the 20th century have constantly
been focused on the topological complexity of motorized&public transportation network (internal
geometry&dynamics, occupied space, and geographical settings), or the structural properties (complexity of network
structure). However, those studies have failed to incorporate the concept of an integrated public-soft transportation
network, and the human-oriented transportation system, and its structural elements: soft transportation network,
accessible nodes called Transit-Oriented Developments (TODs) (internal geometry&dynamics), healthy
neighborhoods (accessible space occupied by transportation networks) and, most importantly, its topological
attributes. Additionally, the relative location (urban geographical settings) haven't been adequately represented in
their models to refine through the cumulative effects of internal&external constraints the final output model: humanoriented
transportation system and to formulate a finalized concept of the organic approach for megalopolises.
In this paper, the advanced phases of transportation network growth: integrated public-soft transportation network
and human-oriented transportation system will be discussed. Secondly, the topological attributes of those networks
will be determined by comparing to the our concept of human-oriented transportation system, integrated public-soft
transportation network in Finland (Helsinki) with ordinary one in Italy (Rome) through the organic transportation
approach perspective, taking into account an existing set of the topological attributes for each case study as well as
technological considerations. Thirdly, the concept of human-oriented transportation system will be implemented in
the relative location of Bozcaada to transform it to the Organic Island. Thus, a new conceptual model for the organic
approach for megalopolises (accessible& sustainable society coexist &develop alongside the sustainable mobility)
will be proposed.

A production inventory model with Just-In-Time (JIT) set-up cost has been developed in which inflation and time value of money are considered under an imperfect production process. The demand rate is considered to be a function of advertisement cost and selling price. Unit production cost is considered incorporating several features like energy and labour cost, raw material cost and development cost of the manufacturing system. Development cost is assumed to be a function of reliability parameter.
Considering these phenomena, an analytic expression is obtained for the total profit of the model. The model provides an analytical solution to maximize the total profit function.A numerical example is presented to illustrate the model along with graphical analysis. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out to identify the most sensitive parameters of the model.
Taguchi Analysis of Erosion Wear Maize Husk Based Polymer CompositeIJMER
Amids the growing concern on environmental issues, science is seeking various alternatives to replace the synthetic and non degradable fibers composites with environment friendly biocomposites of comparable characteristics and performance. Visualizing the importance of polymer composites and owing to issue of ecological concerns, this experiment is an attempt to further investigate possibility of bio composites (Particularly maize husk) as an alternative of available synthetic polymer composites. Taking one leap forward the experiment also approximate qualities the effect of individual parameters on erosion by the application of Taguchi Technique. Experimental system were devised and designed to study the erosion rate of maize husk fiber Reinforced Polymer composites at various impingement angles, with profound variables such as particle velocity, fiber content, and particle size (erodent size) To cast the composite epoxy Resin LY 556 with corresponding hardener HY 551 was used. The erodent size was in range of it irregular shape. The tribological performance of sheets was investigated in respect to set of various variable parameters as suggested by L16 series of Taguchi Techniques. The morphological feature before and after the experiments were studies using SEM.

Demand for air conditioning is growing, which many times strains the electricity grid. It is
desirable to use technologies like liquid desiccant based air conditioning, which can use waste heat or
solar thermal energy. Solar regeneration has challenges like numerous components, higher parasitic
power and low efficiency. In this work, a solar passive regenerator is developed and used, which has
nominal power consumption for its operation. Its efficiency can be improved significantly by enhanced
glass cooling as demonstrated in this work. The moisture removal rate could be improved by more than
100% with this method. The effect of concentration and solar insolation on moisture removal rate was
also studied in this work

Sustainable Urban Corridors in Khartoum Case of Mohammed Najeeb StreetDr. Amarjeet Singh
This article aims at measuring the sustainability of the streets of Khartoum using the Pedestrian Environmental Quality Index (P.E.Q.I.). This index has six categories: Intersection safety; traffic; street design; perceived safety; land use; and perceived walkability. Each category has several items. As a case study, Mohammed Najeeb main street is studied since it represents main streets in Khartoum. Results show that the sustainability standard of the studied street is below average (40%). Conclusions are written. And recommendations are drawn.

The study aimed to answer the question of how pedestrianisation can influence walkability to increasing physical activity vitality and livability of urban spaces. Therefore, after the theoretical understanding of the framework of the research, the study will focus on experimental research on the Salamis rode of Famagusta to assess the problems of walkability in the street to propose a sustainable and human friendly solution for this area. The main aim of the research is to find what is the interrelation between pedestrianisation in public urban spaces and walkability? Therefore, it concludes that walkability as a part of pedestrianisation scheme will lead to increase the quality of the urban environment by increasing safety and organization in urban infra-instructors.

active transport manifests, if a sufficient condition is not
provided, it may deprive the individuals of any opportunity for
the activity to occur at all. This is why it is important to study the
built environment as a factor of walkability and develop
knowledge about creating urban environments that are
conducive for active transport. This paper discusses active
transport factors at various levels. Further, the paper dwells on
investigating the attributes of built environment at the street and
building level.

Basically, Rail-transit Oriented Development (ROD) is an integrated high density mixed use rail station
transit area development for improving accessibility to public transport, enhancing pedestrian friendly
environment as well as increasing urban mobility. Many developed countries have applied the concept of
ROD for generating the compact development of rail station area.
Best practices approach is a selective observation towards several cases with various contexts in order to
get generalization of related theories or concept on practices. In this approach, the study is oriented to
some reasons that make cases being successful. There are two basic components of best practices
approach, i.e. source site and target site. This research elaborated some cases in Japan rail station area
development as source sites for best practices. The finding from elaboration of source sites was brought as
a tool for analyzing the target sites, Jabodetabek rail station area.
The result shows different physical and cultural context between Japan and Indonesia cause the developed
countries concept of ROD cannot be fully applied as it is. It needs some adaptation to be applied in
Indonesia.
Configurational Economies: The Value of Accessibility in Urban Development drboon
This research is an effort to understand the theoretical foundations of how the configuration of space is interrelated with the economic properties that sustain the built fabric. The argument is based on unfolding accessibility in two perspectives: As a spatial parameter that understands urban form as a system of relational patterns of connections that organises human activity. And as an economic parameter that can be valued under specific price mechanisms of urban properties. The paper shows a first preliminary study of testing street prices with spatial accessibility measures. The method was to use current house prices with Space Syntax techniques, a spatial analysis tool that outputs measures of connectivity and accessibility represented in a street network. Overall, economy contributes on the shape of our cities that prevail in the spatial relations of the built form, resulting in new configurational economies.

Transportation has always been the backbone of development. Transit-oriented development (TOD) has been theorized, piloted and expanded increasingly in the past few decades. In this regard, this paper investigates the relationship between urban development, the transportation process, and the required implementation guidelines within fast-urbanizing cities, such as Cairo. After reviewing different related sustainable development theories, the study investigates pioneering case studies that have applied TOD and provided adequate implementation frameworks. The authors then extract and compare a set of required policies. The current Egyptian development paradigm is then discussed in relation to these enabling policies, focusing on Greater Cairo Region, Egypt. The authors debate previous development plans, progress, and newly proposed ones, focusing on the transportation process as the means for development. The study concludes with a set of required guidelines to ensure the integration of transportation with land-use planning, thus ensuring a more prosperous and inclusive urban development.

ABSTRACT
Many studies have been conducted over the last 20 years to determine and measure factors that affect the walkability of city streets. Walkability is an essential factor in deciding whether a city is green or sustainable. This paper creates a comprehensive walkability index by analysing built environmental indicators that affect walkability. This research was conducted on mixed land use streets in Cairo, Egypt, combining the results from an online survey and a walkability assessment model developed by multi-criteria decision analysis techniques. The results were based on a three-pillar approach starting with the theoretical background to frame the walkability indicator, numerical assessment over the Egyptian cases using a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique and a qualitative user perception survey. Our results confirm that determining to what extent Cairo’s streets are walkable is crucial to enhancing pedestrians’ perceptions of the walking environment. Furthermore, the results illustrated the essential factors within the built environment indicators that influence pedestrian walking behaviour.

Planning for Metro Transit Transportation System a simplified Approach: A Cas...IJAEMSJORNAL
Currently Muscat the capital city of Oman is suffering from many traffic and transported related problems. Some of the serious concerns are high vehicle ownerships, low occupancy in personalized vehicles and poor patronization towards public transportation systems. Ruwi is the City center and a major Central Business District in Muscat. More than one million commuters daily visit Ruwi City center for their day to day business. The common transportation related problems often reported by the citizens at Ruwi CBD, are traffic congestion, over speeding of vehicles, inadequacy of parking places and pedestrian safety. All such problems can be eliminated by providing efficient public transportation system by restricting the entry of personal vehicles and para transit. In this technical paper, panning and designing of public transit facility by metro transport facility is attempted by capturing land use and travel information of daily commuters at Ruwi CBD area. An extensive literature review is carried for establishing the bench marking while planning metro transit system. For this the CBD area is cordoned and divided into traffic analysis zones based on the land use characteristics. Travel information of the commuter is estimated through interviewing them at the CBD entry gateway points and work locations. Land use characteristics are captured through reconnaissance of the area and random inspection of land parcels. Land use Information captured through the Google images and physical verification of data of the selected sample land parcels helped in estimation and characterization of the land use. Questionnaire survey at the activity centers helped in estimation of total trips attracted by the land uses. Travel characteristics, derived through the personal interviews of the commuters, facilitated for the estimation of total trips. Trip factors for different land uses are derived. Total trips generated are quantified and is used in planning of Metro Transit facility at the Ruwi city center. Commuter circulation pattern for the metro transit is also scheduled. Also it is proposed to carry extensive literature for establishing bench mark while planning the transit system.
Urban spaces reflect the reality of city life, like a mirror. This research aims to examine and analyze the advanced aesthetic, functional, and environmental performance of urban public spaces by assessing the current situation and highlighting the role of creativity in developing these spaces. To clarify the research scope, Şişhane Park in İstanbul, Turkey was studied to define the requirements of creative standards, evaluate these competencies and choose the appropriate architectural style and urban furniture. In addition, to learn ways of preserving those elements for longer life. The analytical descriptive approach was the research method utilized in order to arrive at a set of results that ascertain the reality of the aesthetic, functional, and environmental performance of urban public spaces, and the reflection of the contemporary role in developing these spaces, which can contribute to addressing weaknesses and bolster the strength points in the formation of public urban spaces around the world.

The incorporation of natural fibres such as munja fiber composites has gained
increasing applications both in many areas of Engineering and Technology. The aim of this study is to
evaluate mechanical properties such as flexural and tensile properties of reinforced epoxy composites.
This is mainly due to their applicable benefits as they are light weight and offer low cost compared to
synthetic fibre composites. Munja fibres recently have been a substitute material in many weight-critical
applications in areas such as aerospace, automotive and other high demanding industrial sectors. In
this study, natural munja fibre composites and munja/fibreglass hybrid composites were fabricated by a
combination of hand lay-up and cold-press methods. A new variety in munja fibre is the present work
the main aim of the work is to extract the neat fibre and is characterized for its flexural characteristics.
The composites are fabricated by reinforcing untreated and treated fibre and are tested for their
mechanical, properties strictly as per ASTM procedures.

The present day technology demands eco-friendly developments. In this era the
composite material are playing a vital roal in different field of Engineering .The composite materials
are using as a principle materials. Nowaday the composite materials are utilizing as a important
component of engineering field .Where as the importance of the applications of composites is well
known, but thrust on the use of natural fibres in it for reinforcement has been given priority for some
times. But changing from synthetic fibres to natural fibres provides only half green-composites. A
partial green composite will be achieved if the matrix component is also eco-friendly. Keeping this in
view, a detailed literature surveyed has been carried out through various issues of the Journals
related to this field. The material systems used are sunnhemp fibres. Some epoxy and hardener has
been also added for stability and drying of the bio-composites. Various graphs and bar-charts are
super-imposed on each other for comparison among themselves and Graphs is plotted on MAT LAB
and ORIGIN 6.0 software. To determining tensile strengths, Various properties for different biocomposites
have been compared among themselves. Comparison of the behaviour of bio-composites of
this work has been also compare with other works. The bio-composites developed in this work are
likely to get applications in fall ceilings, partitions, bio-degradable packagings, automotive interiors,
sports things (e.g. rackets, nets, etc.), toys etc.
Geochemistry and Genesis of Kammatturu Iron Ores of Devagiri Formation, Sandu...IJMER
The Greenstone belts of Karnataka are enriched in BIFs in Dharwar craton, where Iron
formations are confined to the basin shelf, clearly separated from the deeper-water iron formation that
accumulated at the basin margin and flanking the marine basin. Geochemical data procured in terms of
major, trace and REE are plotted in various diagrams to interpret the genesis of BIFs. Al2O3, Fe2O3 (T),
TiO2, CaO, and SiO2 abundances and ratios show a wide variation. Ni, Co, Zr, Sc, V, Rb, Sr, U, Th,
ΣREE, La, Ce and Eu anomalies and their binary relationships indicate that wherever the terrigenous
component has increased, the concentration of elements of felsic such as Zr and Hf has gone up. Elevated
concentrations of Ni, Co and Sc are contributed by chlorite and other components characteristic of basic
volcanic debris. The data suggest that these formations were generated by chemical and clastic
sedimentary processes on a shallow shelf. During transgression, chemical precipitation took place at the
sediment-water interface, whereas at the time of regression. Iron ore formed with sedimentary structures
and textures in Kammatturu area, in a setting where the water column was oxygenated.

Robot guns are being increasingly employed in automotive manufacturing to replace
risky jobs and also to increase productivity. Using a single robot for a single operation proves to be
expensive. Hence for cost optimization, multiple guns are mounted on a single robot and multiple
operations are performed. Robot Gun structure is an efficient way in which multiple welds can be done
simultaneously. However mounting several weld guns on a single structure induces a variety of
dynamic loads, especially during movement of the robot arm as it maneuvers to reach the weld
locations. The primary idea employed in this paper, is to model those dynamic loads as equivalent G
force loads in FEA. This approach will be on the conservative side, and will be saving time and
subsequently cost efficient. The approach of the paper is towards creating a standard operating
procedure when it comes to analysis of such structures, with emphasis on deploying various technical
aspects of FEA such as Non Linear Geometry, Multipoint Constraint Contact Algorithm, Multizone
meshing .

determined by performing static analysis. Computed results are then compared to analytical calculation,
where it is found that the location of maximum deflection agrees well with theoretical approximation but
varies on magnitude aspect.

This paper present an approach based on the combination of, two techniques using
decision tree and Association rule mining for Probe attack detection. This approach proves to be
better than the traditional approach of generating rules for fuzzy expert system by clustering methods.
Association rule mining for selecting the best attributes together and decision tree for identifying the
best parameters together to create the rules for fuzzy expert system. After that rules for fuzzy expert
system are generated using association rule mining and decision trees. Decision trees is generated for
dataset and to find the basic parameters for creating the membership functions of fuzzy inference
system. Membership functions are generated for the probe attack. Based on these rules we have
created the fuzzy inference system that is used as an input to neuro-fuzzy system. Fuzzy inference
system is loaded to neuro-fuzzy toolbox as an input and the final ANFIS structure is generated for
outcome of neuro-fuzzy approach. The experiments and evaluations of the proposed method were
done with NSL-KDD intrusion detection dataset. As the experimental results, the proposed approach
based on the combination of, two techniques using decision tree and Association rule mining
efficiently detected probe attacks. Experimental results shows better results for detecting intrusions as
compared to others existing methods

Material Parameter and Effect of Thermal Load on Functionally Graded CylindersIJMER
The present study investigates the creep in a thick-walled composite cylinders made
up of aluminum/aluminum alloy matrix and reinforced with silicon carbide particles. The distribution
of SiCp is assumed to be either uniform or decreasing linearly from the inner to the outer radius of
the cylinder. The creep behavior of the cylinder has been described by threshold stress based creep
law with a stress exponent of 5. The composite cylinders are subjected to internal pressure which is
applied gradually and steady state condition of stress is assumed. The creep parameters required to
be used in creep law, are extracted by conducting regression analysis on the available experimental
results. The mathematical models have been developed to describe steady state creep in the composite
cylinder by using von-Mises criterion. Regression analysis is used to obtain the creep parameters
required in the study. The basic equilibrium equation of the cylinder and other constitutive equations
have been solved to obtain creep stresses in the cylinder. The effect of varying particle size, particle
content and temperature on the stresses in the composite cylinder has been analyzed. The study
revealed that the stress distributions in the cylinder do not vary significantly for various combinations
of particle size, particle content and operating temperature except for slight variation observed for
varying particle content. Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) emerged and led to the development
of superior heat resistant materials.

The focus of this paper is on implementation of Inter Integrated Circuit (I2C) protocol
following slave module for no data loss. In this paper, the principle and the operation of I2C bus protocol
will be introduced. It follows the I2C specification to provide device addressing, read/write operation and
an acknowledgement. The programmable nature of device provide users with the flexibility of configuring
the I2C slave device to any legal slave address to avoid the slave address collision on an I2C bus with
multiple slave devices. This paper demonstrates how I2C Master controller transmits and receives data to
and from the Slave with proper synchronization.
The module is designed in Verilog and simulated in ModelSim. The design is also synthesized in Xilinx
XST 14.1. This module acts as a slave for the microprocessor which can be customized for no data loss.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

I. Introduction
One of the major goals of urban design is to reduce automobile dependency, in order to address issues
of viability and sustainability (Newman, &Kenworthy, 2006). For many years, urban designers have focused on
planning the cities based on the existence of automobile, as a result, streets are often over scaled and
inhospitable to pedestrians (Southworth and Ben- Joseph, 2004).This type of urban development has been a
great threat to the historical identity of old urban fabrics and as a result the character and function of those
places have changed and in many cases diminished (Habibi, 1999).
Urban design is a technique and knowledge seeking to organize and improve urban qualities and
increase the quality of citizenship life. Based on the perspectives and objectives of urban design, the dominant
intention in all urbanism activities is to reach high humanistic and social dimensions. In fact, what give meaning
to a city are the social aspects raised in recent urban activities, in addition to the physical and visual body of it.
In recent researches conducted in the field of urban design, social qualities in conjunction visual, functional and
spatial qualities are emphasized. In this study, based on extensive studies regarding urban qualities, social
qualities are focused on as the parameter influenced by social relationships which is lost in most urban designs.
Urban qualities as a tool for urban planners to promote and organize the environment have the ability to provide
substrates for shaping and promoting the social spaces.
This study examines the walkability of KALANTARI highway which is one of the most important
designed spaces. Mentioned area is main structure in urban fabric. This area was located in Mashhad as second
cities after Tehran in Iran.
II. Literature Of Workability
The definition of walkability has been varied according to various disciplines. Southworth (2008)
defines a walkable environment from the perspective of the urban design. He believes that the emphasis on
health in the discourse of walkability deviates the attention from other types of walkable environments and

meanings of walkability. He has suggested five other types of walkable environments beside walkable as being
associated with encouraging physical activity type of environment:
Close: A walkable environment that provides a short distance to a destination, particularly where driving
is inconvenient or people are without cars. This is the perspective rooted in transportation planning. This
definition has a great deal to do with an individual’s cost-benefits calculation.
Barrier-free: A walkable environment that is crossable, without major barriers. Walkability can be refined
for the ease of children, elderly and disabled people.
Safe: A walkable environment is safe in terms of perceived crime or perceived traffic.
Full of pedestrian infrastructure and destinations: A walkable environment visibly displays full pedestrian
infrastructure such aside walks or separated trails, marked pedestrian crossings, street furniture and street
plantings.
Upscale, leafy or cosmopolitan: A walkable place is somewhere that the pedestrian environment is
pleasant for upper middle-class professionals, who have other choices for getting around.
Another definition offered by Southworth (2008) which seems more comprehensive and appropriate to
be used in the current study is the extent to which the built environment supports and encourages walking by
providing for pedestrian comfort and safety, connecting people with varied destinations within a reasonable
amount of time and effort, and offering visual interest in journeys throughout the network. Walkability can be
evaluated at various scales, at site scale, at a street or neighborhoods level and at the community level
(Southworth, 2005). The factors that affect the walkability of urban area are varied and they are influenced by
many variables including the aesthetics, attractiveness and pleasurability of the environment. This relates to how
much the environment gives joy to the users aesthetically, attracts pedestrians to use the space, and pleases them
with opportunities offered (Owen et al, 2004; Shay et al, 2004). Previous literature suggests how to evaluate an
environment based on its ability to accommodate these qualities. Pleasant atmosphere, attractive architecture
and streetscape on well-lit public areas, outdoor seating in residential and commercial areas was mentioned by
Shay et al. (2003) and Shriver (1997) as variables affecting walkability. Others have also noted the presence of
historical buildings, well-maintaining, and keeping the environment clear of garbage, litter, broken glass or
graffiti (Southworth, 2008; Hoehner et al, 2004).
A variety of measures have been used to represent the built environment in studies of land use and
travel behavior. In a study by Berrigan and Troiano (2002), a simple measure of neighborhood age is used as a
proxy of walkability. Crane (1996) used three variables to describe the local environment: population density,
land use mix and street pattern. And, a more comprehensive array was used by Craig et al. (2002), where 18
environmental measures described characteristics of destinations, aesthetics, and traffic. However, the research
has thus far been unable to establish a definitive characterization of the elements that comprise a walkable
environment or are influential in affecting rates of pedestrian activity (Crane, 2000; Vernez-Moudon and Lee,
2003). The lack of micro scale environmental data has been a limitation but the collection of detailed
information about non-motorized activity has been overlooked in many transportation studies, further hampering
these efforts.
Also, many studies concerned with walking behavior evaluate the environmental attributes by their
degree of accommodation for pedestrians and the correlations with levels of walking (Aultman-Hall et al., 1997;
Greenwald and Boarnet, 2001). Considering this issue and making efforts to improve the quality of walkable
environment in neighborhoods as it is shown in the results of the present study would lead to increase in the
social capital among a society.
III. Defining Urban Vitality
Vitality as a term has become widely used in the field of city planning and urbanism in the last
decades. In recent years it has gained a particular interest and considerations. But before we go on exploring
pathways to defining and measuring Urban Vitality it is necessary to mediate its original meanings and identify
some generic characteristics and multi component.
In the urban field, the discussions on Urban Vitality started in 1960s picking up speed towards the 1980s on the
background of scientific ideas from natural and social sciences. The classic definition of the word is widely used
in the scientific world when referring to a property of a system that makes it able to survive, grow and develop.
It is important to note that this property refers to some crucial aspects of the phenomenology of complexity and
is a result of some basic characteristics and processes inherent to it. Cities are extraordinarily complex
organisms, but their complexity derives from a simple formula. So to ensure their future as living organisms we
have understand some of the generic drivers behind their complex phenomenology. For that we need to know
the determining factors of the phenomena associated with it and then to recognize them within the functioning
of our urban environments. The mathematician, John Casti (1986, 1994) identifies some characteristics of

complex systems which he considers typical of human systems and contemporary life. First of all, complex
systems express a condition of numerous elements with it that are characterized by the “presence of many
interactions of different kinds, and numerous feedbacks and feed forward cycles which allow the system to
restructure or ... modify the pattern of interactions between the variables”(John Casti, 1994). Secondly, he
derives two fundamental aspects of complex phenomenology: synergy and self-organization. In other words,
complex systems possess the capacity to respond to stimuli from the external environment, redefinitions far
from equilibrium. In this connection there are three important characteristics crucial to the vitality of such a
system:
Now, as we attempt to take a step forward, we shell try to see in what way these characteristics of
complexity are manifested in urban systems. We know that the very large number and the variety of integration
and interrelation processes are some of the fundamental factors of complexity in urban systems. What is more
these relations extend across several layers – functional (physical), economic social, political, etc. Each of these
layers includes smaller or larger number of elements creating among each other numerous, different and
changing interactions. It implies that the well-being of the urban form, the efficiency of its performance and
therefore its vitality are dependent of how smooth the interactive flow between these elements is (Figure 10).
This also means that specific conditions, Layouts and circumstances can facilitate or hamper the interactions
between the elements.
One of such conditions is the ability or disability for self-management or self-organization of urban
territories. If we think of urban system as a result of thelocational choices of a large number of individuals, we
are presented with the democratic type of system where the wide dispersion of authority and decision making
make these systems more stable, more elastic and have a greater capacity to resist unexpected environmental
fluctuations (John Casti, 1994).
Many critics of modernist city (Jacobs, 1961, Salingaros, 2005) have advocated the quality of urban
areas to maintain its own order and referred to the process of self-organization as a “bottom-up” process
involving a large number of people who in some way demonstrate respect for a set of rules, producing
nevertheless non-predetermined outcome characterized by a high degree of diversity. The
Diversity that results is then overlaid with historical processes (time-factor) and added a critical mass
becomes a real asset of cities that makes them viable and strong .
IV. Problem Statement
In the United States, great emphasis has been placed on planning for smart growth, bicycle, and
pedestrian in the 90’s, while in Northern Europe, the decline of modernist planning and automobile dependent
transportation system occurred somewhat earlier with the energy crises of the 70’s.Unfortunately in many Asian
countries despite having great history in architecture and urban planning, the modernist planning era and
automobile dependency continue to flourish and even grow very fast in recent years(Hutabarat-Lo, 2009).
Iran as a developing country is also struggling with the impacts of auto dependence urban design.
Many historical cities of Iran have been affected by this trend. According to the local officials of the Mashhad
city, the city suffers from traffic and air pollution and while this is a growing trend in the city, the issue has not
been seriously addressed. One of the ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) members stated
that cultural-historical fabric of Mashhad is in danger because of the development of the Mashhad city.

Sidewalk in Mashhad does not have meaning. In the mind of citizens of this city, sidewalk is a messy
path where you will encounter many problems walking there, from bike passing, bumping into other people,
shops which locate their stuffs in the walkways and occupy the space, and much of these problems also occur
KALANTARI highway.
In order to improving urban qualify, was studied main urban axis. There are some problems in this
area. They are:
1- There is air and sound pollution
2- There isn’t vitality
3- There isn’t identify
Thus, the research hypotheses are:
- It seems, there isn’t vitality in this sidewalk.
- It seems, mentioned location isn’t safe position (light).
- It seems, citizen don’t satisfaction from position.
V. Methodology
Research method is descriptive. The method of collected data is field. Also, were used questionnaire
tools in order to collecting data. On the other hand, was referred to municipality 9 region due to, studied area
was located in this urban region.
In continue, was used SWOT technique in order to analyzing questionnaire. At finally, proposed strategies in
order to improving urban space qualify.
VI. Studied Area
Mashhad has been located between Hezar Masjed & Binaloud Mountains. The city is located at 36.20º
North latitude and 59.35º East longitude, in the valley of the Kashaf River near Turkmenistan, between the two
mountain ranges of Binalood and Hezar-masjed. Mashhad divided 7 parts in planning based on environmental,
physical, economical, social indicators. This area consists of natural and physical opportunities. Thus, middle
area is one of the main economical and physical areas in Mashhad. This area has some factors (ebrahimpour,
2014:230). Mashhad has 12 municipality regions. Studied area was located in 9 municipal regions.

VII. Result
In order to concluding descriptive data, was used questionnaire tool. So findings have been shown as graphs.

SWOT analysis (alternatively SWOT matrix) is a structured planning method used to evaluate the
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in a project or in a business venture. A SWOT
analysis can be carried out for a product, place, industry or person. It involves specifying the objective of the
business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to
achieve that objective. Some authors credit SWOT to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford
Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.
However, Humphrey himself does not claim the creation of SWOT, and the origins remain obscure. The degree
to which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept
of strategic fit.
Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others.
Weaknesses: characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage relative to others
Opportunities: elements that the project could exploit to its advantage
Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project
Identification of SWOTs is important because they can inform later steps in planning to achieve the objective.
First, the decision makers should consider whether the objective is attainable, given the SWOTs. If the objective
is not attainable a different objective must be selected and the process repeated.
Users of SWOT analysis need to ask and answer questions that generate meaningful information for each
category (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) to make the analysis useful and find their
competitive advantage.

VIII. Conclusion
Sustainable transportation is a prerequisite for urban sustainable development .According to
international organizations, the promotion of urban life quality could be obtained through a transportation that is
compatible with economy, society, and environment aspects. Creating walkable neighborhoods is one of the
strategies to achieve urban sustainability .This component not only accounts for a sustainable development
pattern, but also pays attention to other development patterns such as public transportation-based development
patterns as well as smart growth. In studying was studied side walk of KALANTARI highway condition. There
is three hypotheses. They are:
- It seems, there isn’t vitality in this sidewalk.
- It seems, mentioned location isn’t safe position (light).
- It seems, citizen don’t satisfaction from position.
According to analyzed data, there isn’t vitality in this location. Also, citizen doesn't satisfy condition. So studied
area need planning such as walkability in order to improving qualify.
