Really Recovering?

2. There has been much recent talk about how damaged the ozone layer is. There is
truth to the reports. The ozone layer protects the earth from the sun’s harmful
UV rays, but with increased emissions of greenhouse gases, the ozone layer is
being damaged, causing unwanted global warming. In some parts, the damage
in unnerving. Located directly over Antarctica, a hole in the ozone peaked at a
massive 10.9 million square miles, larger than North America itself.
As a result, temperatures have increased causing devastation to the polar ice
caps, changes to the weather systems and a threat to our environment.
But there are recent reports which reveal positive news. In its most basic form,
experts say that the ozone layer is “healing.”
3. On The Path To Recovery
Almost 300 scientists from 36 nations, all contributors to a report by the
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), claim that the ozone layer is
healing. The rate is fast enough that experts say the holes will be “half-
closed” by 2020, at least. They say it’s due to the world’s collective effort to
phase out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) by signing the Montreal Protocol in
1987.

4. One look at the situation makes it clear: human activity is what’s damaging the
environment. The Montreal Protocol should be just one of numerous joint
efforts to curb environmentally damaging activities. If fulfilled, these measures
could be enough to protect the ozone layer and improve the earth’s defence
against harmful UV rays.
