Reducing IT system implementation cost and complexity in airport construction
As of today, over US$540 billion is planned in airport infrastructure construction projects. IT systems represent a significant part of the investment as IT components are becoming increasingly complex. They are also one of the last major packages to go in before a terminal goes live, creating a significant risk of delay. Rather than procuring, implementing and integrating individual systems, construction companies and airport operators should contemplate using a Master Systems Integration (MSI) general contractor for IT systems. This reduces the cost and risk in having the project ready on time. SITA presented the MSI approach and how the decision helped Baku Airport in Azerbaijan meet the challenges of building a world-class airport at PTE 2015.

Singapore's Changi Airport has been named the world's best airport for the seventh consecutive year. It connects passengers to 200 destinations worldwide with 5,000 flights per week. Changi is known for its passenger experiences beyond security, including gardens, art installations, and a new indoor sanctuary connected to three terminals. As passenger numbers rise, Changi aims to raise its standards to redefine air travel.

The aviation industry has experienced soaring passenger traffic, requiring airports to dramatically develop their operations to accommodate more volume. Managing airport complexities is challenging, involving safety, security, resources, assets, and more. A recent study explored the "Smart Airport" concept of heavily interconnecting technical and operational know-how. It analyzed perspectives of technology, business optimization and revenues, and improved passenger experience. Effective information technology governance is important for seamless travel, requiring shared decision-making and well-designed processes formally communicated. Airports are moving from centralized structures with decentralized information technology to decentralized structures with centralized information technology.
