This document discusses slope subsidence that occurred in Kuttikkanam, Kerala, India in August 2018 after torrential rains. It aims to identify the causes of the slope failure through numerical modeling and analysis. Field visits were conducted to collect soil samples and survey data. The slope was modeled in Plaxis 3D software using the soil parameters from laboratory tests. The analysis found that heavy rainfall caused high pore water pressures that washed away an underlying clay layer, resulting in vertical subsidence. Modeling with and without the clay layer showed safety factors of 2.28 and 0.77, respectively, indicating the clay layer removal triggered the failure. Proper remediation is needed to prevent future failures.
