The start of the Irish
revolutionary period
Since the Union Act of 1800 the country is torn between
Unionists and Irish nationalists, demanding for “Home Rule”.
A revolt against the British Rule takes place in the form of the
Eastern Rising in 1916, which is violently suppressed.
The First Dáil is created after the 1918 elections.
Issuing of the Irish
Declaration of
Independence
Declaration of War against
Great Britain in 1919
Birth of the Irish
Republican Army
(or IRA)
The War of Independence
From 1919 to 1921, the country is shaken by the War of
Independence, with the IRA pitted against the British Army.
Two important documents are issued:
-  the Government of Ireland Act
-  the Anglo-Irish peace treaty
IRA soldiers in 1921
However, disagreements
over the peace treaty led
to an 11-month civil war

The Troubles (1968-1998)
Irish nationalists want Northern Ireland to leave the UK; they
denounce discrimination and police brutality against the
Catholic minorities.
Many civil rights associations held protests but after the
“Bloody Sunday” (30 January 1972) violence erupts.
Following the incident a “low intensity war” breaks out between the IRA
and the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army), Ulster loyalist
paramilitary groups and British security forces.
The Cease Fire
After the 1985 Agreement signed by Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher, a document that finally granted peace was issued in
1998. With the Good Friday Agreement the Troubles stopped.
