This document provides an introduction to deep learning, including key developments in neural networks from the discovery of the neuron model in 1899 to modern networks with over 100 million parameters. It summarizes influential deep learning models such as AlexNet from 2012, ZF Net and GoogLeNet from 2013-2015, which helped reduce error rates on the ImageNet challenge. Top AI scientists who have contributed significantly to deep learning research are also mentioned. Common activation functions, convolutional neural networks, and deconvolution are briefly explained with examples.
It’s long ago, approx. 30 years, since AI was not only a topic for Science-Fiction writers, but also a major research field surrounded with huge hopes and investments. But the over-inflated expectations ended in a subsequent crash and followed by a period of absent funding and interest – the so-called AI winter. However, the last 3 years changed everything – again. Deep learning, a machine learning technique inspired by the human brain, successfully crushed one benchmark after another and tech companies, like Google, Facebook and Microsoft, started to invest billions in AI research. “The pace of progress in artificial general intelligence is incredible fast” (Elon Musk – CEO Tesla & SpaceX) leading to an AI that “would be either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity” (Stephen Hawking – Physicist).
What sparked this new Hype? How is Deep Learning different from previous approaches? Are the advancing AI technologies really a threat for humanity? Let’s look behind the curtain and unravel the reality. This talk will explore why Sundar Pichai (CEO Google) recently announced that “machine learning is a core transformative way by which Google is rethinking everything they are doing” and explain why "Deep Learning is probably one of the most exciting things that is happening in the computer industry” (Jen-Hsun Huang – CEO NVIDIA).
Either a new AI “winter is coming” (Ned Stark – House Stark) or this new wave of innovation might turn out as the “last invention humans ever need to make” (Nick Bostrom – AI Philosoph). Or maybe it’s just another great technology helping humans to achieve more.

An ANN depends on an assortment of associated units or hubs called fake neurons, which freely model the neurons in an organic cerebrum. Every association, similar to the neurotransmitters in an organic cerebrum, can send a sign to different neurons. A counterfeit neuron that gets a sign at that point measures it and can flag neurons associated with it.

This is an introduction to deep learning presented to Plymouth University students. In the introduction it is explained how a neural network works. In the practical section it is shown how to use Tensorflow for building simple models. Finally the case studies, how to use deep learning in real world applications.
We trained a large, deep convolutional neural network to classify the 1.2 million
high-resolution images in the ImageNet LSVRC-2010 contest into the 1000 different
classes. On the test data, we achieved top-1 and top-5 error rates of 37.5%
and 17.0% which is considerably better than the previous state-of-the-art. The
neural network, which has 60 million parameters and 650,000 neurons, consists
of five convolutional layers, some of which are followed by max-pooling layers,
and three fully-connected layers with a final 1000-way softmax. To make training
faster, we used non-saturating neurons and a very efficient GPU implementation
of the convolution operation. To reduce overfitting in the fully-connected
layers we employed a recently-developed regularization method called “dropout”
that proved to be very effective. We also entered a variant of this model in the
ILSVRC-2012 competition and achieved a winning top-5 test error rate of 15.3%,
compared to 26.2% achieved by the second-best entry

Courier management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
It is now-a-days very important for the people to send or receive articles like imported furniture, electronic items, gifts, business goods and the like. People depend vastly on different transport systems which mostly use the manual way of receiving and delivering the articles. There is no way to track the articles till they are received and there is no way to let the customer know what happened in transit, once he booked some articles. In such a situation, we need a system which completely computerizes the cargo activities including time to time tracking of the articles sent. This need is fulfilled by Courier Management System software which is online software for the cargo management people that enables them to receive the goods from a source and send them to a required destination and track their status from time to time.

Cosmetic shop management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
Buying new cosmetic products is difficult. It can even be scary for those who have sensitive skin and are prone to skin trouble. The information needed to alleviate this problem is on the back of each product, but it's thought to interpret those ingredient lists unless you have a background in chemistry.
Instead of buying and hoping for the best, we can use data science to help us predict which products may be good fits for us. It includes various function programs to do the above mentioned tasks.
Data file handling has been effectively used in the program.
The automated cosmetic shop management system should deal with the automation of general workflow and administration process of the shop. The main processes of the system focus on customer's request where the system is able to search the most appropriate products and deliver it to the customers. It should help the employees to quickly identify the list of cosmetic product that have reached the minimum quantity and also keep a track of expired date for each cosmetic product. It should help the employees to find the rack number in which the product is placed. It is also Faster and more efficient way.

6. Layer-wise organization
Most networks are fully-connected
Not counting Input layer (3-layered on picture)
Output layer - no activation function
4 + 4 + 1 = 9 neurons
[3 x 4] + [4 x 4] + [4 x 1]
= 12 + 16 + 4 = 32 weights
4 + 4 + 1 = 9 biases
∑ = 41 learnable params
Modern NN ~100 million parameters with ~10-20 layers
Example: Visual Geometry Group Network (Oxford) have 19 layers and 138 Millions parameters to learn
