5. 1. Introduction
• A ‘Project’ is defined as a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a
unique product or service or result.
• The product in case of construction project is the constructed facility such
as residential building , bridge , highway , canal etc.
• Construction projects involves varying manpower and duration that can
range from a few weeks to more than 5 years.

6. Unique features of a construction project
→One time activity - it must be performed correctly the first every time
→A start and finish
→Complexity- it is multidiscipilanary because it involves a set of
interrealated tasks to be done by specialists.
→Involvment of several people on a adhoc basis.
→limited set of resources

Stages involved in a construction project are :
1. Briefing stage

9. 2.1 Briefing stage
• This is also called as a ‘Report stage’.
• Briefing stage involves the ideas originated by individuals are studied with regard to
cost and benefits so as to establish the economic viability or social utility of a
project.
• The briefing stage leads on the objective on the scope and feasibility of the project .
A feasibility report is prepared in this stage.

• The purpose of briefing stage is to enable the client/ owner to specify project
function and permissible cost so that engineers, architects and other members of
construction team can correctly interpret the owner’s wishes and provide a likely
estimate of costs.

12. 2.2 Designing Stage
• The Second stage in construction project is designing stage.
• In this stage the realistic and detailed cost estimate of the project can
prepared .
• It is very important stage in the field of construction because any
modification after this stage would prove expensive.

Design related tasks in designing stage are :
• Arranging the documents of the construction contract
• Qualifing of design professionals
• Evaluate the design and making necessary decisions
• Updating and reviewing design documents
• Conducting design peer review

14. 2.3 Tendering Stage
In this stage tenderers are invited and the contract is given at the best
available terms agreed mutually between the owner and the contractor.
Purpose:
To appoint a contractor , who will undertake the construction work on the
most suitable terms and conditions of quality , cost and completion time.

15. 2.4 Construction Stage
• The Construction stage involves the execution of construction work as per
design, drawings and within agreed limits of time , cost and specified
quality.
• This stage involves inter-releted activities.
• The failure or delay in one activity may disrupt the entire construcvtion
schedule

17. 2.5 Project Monitoring and control Stage
A construction project works in a dynamic environment and situations, to
keep it on track it is necessary to monitor and control the work at regular
intervals and adopt suitable controlling measures.
Purpose:
To see that the progress , cost and quality obtained in any project is within
the agreed time schedule, cost and specification.

19. 2.6 Comissioning Stage
In this stage in which the performance of the structure is evaluated and the
proposed nature of maintanance and reir are considered.
Purpose :

facilities developed functions properly as given in the design.

structure.
