This document discusses qualitative interview techniques. It describes using open-ended questions, avoiding leading questions, and probing issues in depth. It defines probing as stimulating the informant to provide more information without injecting the interviewer's perspective. Three probing techniques are outlined: the silent probe of remaining quiet for the informant to continue; the echo probe of repeating the last thing said to encourage more details; and the uh-huh probe of making affirmative noises to keep the narrative going. The document stresses letting the informant lead the discussion by focusing on topics while giving them space to define the content.
