1. How does your media
production represent
particular social
groups?
2. What is a social group?
“A social group is a collection of people who interact with each other and
share similar characteristics and a sense of unity.”
To some point every social group creates boundaries between itself and
other groups, but a cohesive in‐group typically has three characteristics:
• Members use titles, external symbols, and dress to distinguish themselves
from the out‐group.
• Members tend to clash or compete with members of the out‐group. This
competition with the other group can also strengthen the unity within each
group.
• Members apply positive stereotypes to their in‐group and negative
stereotypes to the other groups.
3. Social groups in our film
Our female protagonist is shown as
the same age as our target audience
Therefore showing the social group
of a mature teenager/young adult.
This is because they can relate to the
character as they are similar age.
This is clear by the height
The clothing she is wearing show a very casual
working/midclass female. wearing day to day clothes
that our audience could relate to and wear themselves
at a good prices. This gives our film a wider audience
as the class covers a large portion of the population.
Broadening our target audience and increasing
popularity. The colour of them is quite bright and normal
so follows the mainstream conventions.
She own a car which shows maturity in her
age therefore reinforces that age group and
mainstream of her charatcer,as she is
keeping up with trends. Also the trendiness
of her car and outfit makes her more
desirable to a mainstream social group as
they will want to be like her.
However our film appeal to a more
outgoing and thrill seeking social
groups as well. This is evident as
we included suspense and horror
which will appeal and grab their
attention, as they enjoy the
adrenalin rush from the horror
aspect.
The type of social group we represent is
someone who is too busy at work to clean
their house. Typically known for only
working and having no social life. This is
evident in out film as you can see the state
of the walls and the entire mess of the
house
These are clothes found in
popular retail stores that groups
like “stylish” from Uk urban would
like on the character
4. Using previous research on UK tribes, it allowed
us to understand what social group would best fit
our audience. Therefore this helped us represent
them in our film so they could feel connected and
apart of it. The UK tribes was the main foundation
we used to present our main actress, including
the clothing and the actions performed, such as
the television and the tea brewing, which are
implications of the UK tribe blog, which allowed
us to mould our perfect actress.
5. The tea which is part of the mis-en-scene is considered a
more British ideal and thus confronts a British social group, as well as the English language diegetic
sound from the television. This shows further implications of a British social norm. The books on the
shelves however represent those of a more extroverted and creative nature, with some books ranging
from old to new, representing the target audience of the film.
The establishing shot by the drone represents the outdoor setting which could be linked to a
social group of the country side, as well as the decrypted mis en scene within the inner walls
of the house, representing a sign of wealth yet some youthful nature due to the lack of
cleanliness within the main actor.
6. • Only female in the shot represents isolated social groups and targets that
represent alone and on their own. Also lives in her own house with a car
which represents a more mature audience, however the mise en scene has
connotations of messiness and a lack of organisation which represents a
class of people which are unorganised and spontaneous. This could link to
a social group which are extroverts which resemble creativity and are
outgoing.
