Into Film Posters
By Zsanett Stockdale
 Fish Tank qualified as a British Teen Drama film, which circulated in 2009. I chose to look at
this specific film poster, as I believe it portrays a true reflection of British, pealed back
teenage culture.
 The main image is of a teenage girl, looking directly away from the camera, almost as if she is
anxious or worried to look directly at someone, in case they’re scared of what they see
(perhaps true teenage culture rather than glamorised hollywood youth). Using a younger
character as the main image will directly target a younger demographic, as they will be able
to relate to the charatcer, and therefore film itself. The usage of a yotufhulcharcter also
signfiies how the content of film is more liekly to appeal to younger audiences. The female
character represents attrtibutes of the ‘chav’ subculture, with gold hoop earings and chairs,
and sleeked straight hair. Therefore this film poster may be hiting at a speififc social gorup
of teenagers, such as lower class, or ‘chav’ subcultures. Nonetheless, the main image of the
young protsgonst allows for a younger audience to be targetted.
 This film poster continues the covnention of British, Independent films by printing numerous
reviews over their products, usually for their unique selling point, especially as tey lack
hollywood, stars that appeals to mainstream culture. The use of reivews can be said to atrget
speficlaly British, indepdetn audiences as they often are intrested in a films more girtty,
true storyline, rather than Hollywood glamour.
 The more natural colour scheme also hints at a more indepdnet audience, as the brigth,
flureoncst colours can often present artiical, glamorised and modified media texts.

 Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is a British coming of age film, released in 2008.
The film was distributed by Paramount Pictures, therefore it holds a slightly higher status
to complete indepdent, British films. Nonetheless, I though this film poster offered simialr
codes and conventions, to that of films of the independent, British nature, as well as it
possesing the teen genre.
 The main image is of a female youth, sitting crossed legged on a studio floor, looking up at
what we are suppose to believe is her thought bubble. The thought bubble expresses an
outline to her life, such as her pet cat, the boy she fancies and the ‘it’ girl she's in
competition with. Therefore the nature of the film is very stereotypical, as it represent
mainstream teen themes. However, I believe the film poster offers some alterative
points, such as the appearance and dress code of the character. The female youth wears
stripe socks, a pair of jeans and a spotted t shirt. Her dress code reflect typical real life
teenagers, as they more often wearing causal informal clothing, rather than designer,
branded clothing. She is also of an average looking girl, avoiding the use of high made up,
acritical teenage girls. She also looks to the similar age of a 16 or 17 year old girl,
therefore audiences will feel as if they can relate and identify with her teen pressures
shown in the thought bubble. I liked the abstract way in which the though bubble
possesses all of her teenage pressures, especially as she is seen looking up at them as if
they’re prominent in her life.
 The title itself also links to highly teenage themes, such as the name of a boy, underwear and
sexual relationships. The colours are bright and cheerful, however maintain the avoidance
of harsh, neon colours.
 Juno (2007), is a coming of age, independent film, focussing on a
common teenage theme of pregnancy and sex.
 The main image is of two characters, a male and a female. We
pressure they’re connected due to their position near each other,
as well as her visible pregnancy bump. They both wear average,
informal clothing. The male is wearing sports attire, however has
voided any uses of branded athletic clothing such as Nike or
Adidas. The female character also wears a pair of baggy jeans with
a skirt over the top, a striped top and brown leather jacket. They
both propose working class, average teenagers, with a slight
American culture. Both characters are evidentally young, which
give audiences the ability to relate to them, as well as find the
overall film poster more approachable. The female is seen as
looking at the camera, whereas the male looks slightly more
anxious, by looking away and scratching his head in worry and
confusion.
 Orange and white stripes represent the film posters colour theme,
with the title in green writing. The colours are somewhat bright,
however also avoid any neon of extremely vibrant shades, as this
is very Hollywood convention. Instead they have opted for more
natural colours, relfecting the nature of the film itslef. The
typography is also shown in an informal, hand written
style, which represents the informal and relaxed teenage culture.
 The film poster proposes teenagers as relaxed, informal, and niave.
There is no obvious sign of Hollywood glamour or stereotypical
representations of teenagers associated with designer or branded
goods. Ultimately the film poster ignores mainstream culture.
My Discoveries
 In conclusion, I have built upon my knowledge of film poster conventions, specifically
looking at independent and teen genre products. As a result I have become more
familiar with overall film poster codes and conventions, however specially applied to
these two factors.
 The main image is usually of the protagonist who is of a younger demographic, similar
to the ages of their target audience. This allows for audiences to relate and identify
with the characters shown, a s the offer a more appealing and approachable manor.
Their choice of outfit and appearance is youthful, relating more so to typical, informal
dress codes, such as jeans and a t shirt, rather than branded Marc Jacobs handbags
or Armani shirts.
 Camera angles are often of mid shots or long shots, and the characters often appear
reluctant to directly face the camera. This could relate to the feeling of teenagers
feeling isolated and as a outcast, therefore having to become defensive of themselves
and their teenage pressures. Additionally, it could represent them as shy or moody, as
they don’t want to communicate, reflecting stereotypical teenagers.
 The use of informal, relaxed hand writing is apparent, reflecting the informal nature of
teenage culture. The colours used avoid neon, high vibrant colours due to their
association with Hollywood and acritical representations. Instead they propose
natural, and appealing colours to reflect the genuine, natural representations of
modern teenage culture.
 Alongside the development of my knowledge of how this particular posters target and
propose their media product, looking at these specific three film posters have also
inspired me within the creation of my own film poster. As a result, I will ensure to
refer back to this task, as well as feel inspired by my discovering content. The task
exceeded my knowledge and inspiration and I look forward to creating my film poster.

Further Research into Film Posters

  • 1. Further Research Into Film Posters By Zsanett Stockdale
  • 2.  Fish Tank qualified as a British Teen Drama film, which circulated in 2009. I chose to look at this specific film poster, as I believe it portrays a true reflection of British, pealed back teenage culture.  The main image is of a teenage girl, looking directly away from the camera, almost as if she is anxious or worried to look directly at someone, in case they’re scared of what they see (perhaps true teenage culture rather than glamorised hollywood youth). Using a younger character as the main image will directly target a younger demographic, as they will be able to relate to the charatcer, and therefore film itself. The usage of a yotufhulcharcter also signfiies how the content of film is more liekly to appeal to younger audiences. The female character represents attrtibutes of the ‘chav’ subculture, with gold hoop earings and chairs, and sleeked straight hair. Therefore this film poster may be hiting at a speififc social gorup of teenagers, such as lower class, or ‘chav’ subcultures. Nonetheless, the main image of the young protsgonst allows for a younger audience to be targetted.  This film poster continues the covnention of British, Independent films by printing numerous reviews over their products, usually for their unique selling point, especially as tey lack hollywood, stars that appeals to mainstream culture. The use of reivews can be said to atrget speficlaly British, indepdetn audiences as they often are intrested in a films more girtty, true storyline, rather than Hollywood glamour.  The more natural colour scheme also hints at a more indepdnet audience, as the brigth, flureoncst colours can often present artiical, glamorised and modified media texts. 
  • 3.  Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is a British coming of age film, released in 2008. The film was distributed by Paramount Pictures, therefore it holds a slightly higher status to complete indepdent, British films. Nonetheless, I though this film poster offered simialr codes and conventions, to that of films of the independent, British nature, as well as it possesing the teen genre.  The main image is of a female youth, sitting crossed legged on a studio floor, looking up at what we are suppose to believe is her thought bubble. The thought bubble expresses an outline to her life, such as her pet cat, the boy she fancies and the ‘it’ girl she's in competition with. Therefore the nature of the film is very stereotypical, as it represent mainstream teen themes. However, I believe the film poster offers some alterative points, such as the appearance and dress code of the character. The female youth wears stripe socks, a pair of jeans and a spotted t shirt. Her dress code reflect typical real life teenagers, as they more often wearing causal informal clothing, rather than designer, branded clothing. She is also of an average looking girl, avoiding the use of high made up, acritical teenage girls. She also looks to the similar age of a 16 or 17 year old girl, therefore audiences will feel as if they can relate and identify with her teen pressures shown in the thought bubble. I liked the abstract way in which the though bubble possesses all of her teenage pressures, especially as she is seen looking up at them as if they’re prominent in her life.  The title itself also links to highly teenage themes, such as the name of a boy, underwear and sexual relationships.
