MARGINALIZATION (Different learners in Marginalized Group
Question 2 evaluation
1. Question2:
How does your mediaproduct representparticular social groups?
In our filmopening,“Immunity”,arange of social groupsare shownand portrayedin
differentways.Byansweringthisquestion,Iwill discuss how the keyareasof the filmopeningand
howtheyare constructedthroughoutit.
I thinkmostof the people inourfilmopeningare conveyedinaverystereotypical manner.
We have manypeople inourfilmopenings, all of whoare categorisedintogroups. The audience see
the reporters, zombies, andteenagers. Becauseof this,Iwill be discussingthe charactersfromour
piece ingroups,focussingontheirage,ethnicity,social class,sexuality,genderandphysical ability.
In our filmopening, there is agroupof fourreporterswhoare all different. There are two
womenandtwo men,buttheyare all of differentages,theyare all well-groomedandspeakwell
witha ‘BBC’ accent, althoughinthisscene, there isnoethnical difference, theyare all ‘White
British’. We are unaware of theirsexualityandnone of themhave adisability.Ithinkthisisavery
stereotypical representationof newsreporters.Although, one of the reportersthatwe castdidn’t
speakwiththe precisionandeloquence thatwe were lookingforsowe hadto recast him.
There are alsoa group of teenagerswhoare verystereotypical inthe waythat theyare
represented;theyare stoodaroundat the park, smoking,andontheirphones.Thisistakingupthe
viewthatolderpeople have aboutteenagersandthe antisocial,delinquentwaysinwhichthey
behave. Againnone of these teenagershave adisability, althoughthereisone aslightethnical
difference betweenthem.
The zombiesare quite diverse,theyare differentages.There are ‘teenage’zombiesand
‘children’zombies, andthere isanethnical difference inacouple of the zombies. However, all of the
zombiesare aroundthe same social class, theirsexualityisnotclearinthis;like withthe reporters
and teenagers.Theyare made upof both boysand girls/menandwomen,howeverthere are more
boysthan girlsbecause we thoughtthata man’spresence wouldbe takenmore seriouslythana
girl’s. Againthere were nopeoplewithdisabilitieswithinthese characters.
In conclusion,Ithinkwe hada range of people inourfilmopening, howevermostof them
were stereotypical representationsof social groups.
