The communications industry is in a period of massive change. It is a time when more than ever, we need to be grounded in an understanding of people’s evolving behaviour and needs. But at this moment of opportunity the industry is waking up to the fact that instead of leading the way, a lot of qualitative research is based on faulty assumptions, has not kept up with cultural change or scientific learning about how the brain works, and may actually be hindering success. This is not the fault of researchers: most companies use market research poorly and don’t ask for innovation in research. But this situation runs the risk of damaging qualitative research’s value and credibility at a time when it is most needed; and researchers, clients, and agencies need to work together to win that credibility back.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. “Introspecting Innovation”
– As the title goes it was purely to give an overview of my theme.
– Introspection means to look within. To see through one’s own thoughts and feelings.
– Innovation resonates a lot with what one feels inside. It is how their ideas are
reflected. Everyone has a unique thinking style.
– Thinking out of the box is the key to any innovative step. Innovating doesn’t mean to
create something that is already there. It is something that is needed.
– Identifying the problem and becoming intolerant to such adjustments will make the
stepping stone for innovation.

5. “Look Closer”
– We generally do not notice the things around us at a glance. It is important to
capture what is around us.
– We might find many fascinating things if we take a close look at what we see
around us. We might realise things that were never before addressed.
– I took the example of Sir Isaac Newton’s story. It was only because he looked
closely at the fall of apple did he realise gravity.
– It is important to pay attention to details, to realise what can be made better
than it already is stirs the need to innovate.

8. “Ask Why Not?”
– Everybody fears change, it is not always appreciated.
– However, here it is necessary to highlight this subject to emphasize on being bold
and open towards change.
– One should never take a back step thinking that the world would question their
thought.
– Thoughts create ideas and ideas create innovations. If we kept following the original
path from the beginning we wouldn’t have made it this far.
– It was only because some people chose not to go in the conventional path, asking
“why not?”
