Long Hair Research Paper
I. Introduction
Hair is a distinctive characteristic of an individual and it grows on the bodies of humans for key
reasons other than to look attractive. For many years, styling ones hair is a trend that the majority of
people follow to portray their personality on their outer appearance. There are no issues with styling
ones hair, but the problem arises when individuals use chemicals to change the natural appearance and
components of their hair. Dyeing ones hair may not show negative results the first time it is applied,
but what if the healthy appearance and elasticity of a person s hair is greatly influenced by hair dyes in
the long run?
As a crucial piece of the integumentary system, the hair s visible components to the naked eye are ...

The average times were 32.62 sec for the control group and 17.05 sec for the experimental group. The
control group proved that natural hair has stronger elasticity, as it took longer to break the strands of
hair samples of each subject. The hair that was dyed lost quite a sum of its elasticity allowing the
pulling force to break it at a faster rate. Finally, a factor that has to be taken into consideration
regarding this experiment is that all of the subject samples were young teenage girls between the ages

Is the Gilgamesh Flood the Basis of the Biblical Flood?
Genesis of the Old Testament records a worldwide Flood early on in the history of human civilization.
Tablet 11of the Sumero Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh also records a total Flood of the
entire earth very early in mankind s development. Let s examine the two to determine if one could be
the basis for the other.
Nels M. Bailkey in Readings in Ancient History: Thought and Experience from Gilganesh to St.
Augustine, comments on the likenesses and lack thereof between the two versions:
The striking similarities with the later Hebrew story are quite evident, but the great gulf between them
needs to be emphasized: the Hebrew version has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Gilgamesh epic, Utnapishtim is not invested with any royal power or entrusted with any priestly
office; from it we learn simply that he was a citizen of Shurippak (Tablet XI:23) and a man of
considerable wealth (XI:70ff). (227)
N.K. Sandars in the Introduction to his book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, sums up the involvement by the
pagan gods in the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative:
In the Gilgamesh flood Ishtar and Enlil are as usual the advocates of destruction. Ishtar speaks,
perhaps in her capacity as goddess of war, but Enlil prevails with his weapon of the storm. Only Ea, in
superior wisdom, either was not present, or being present was silent, and with his usual cunning saw
to it that at least one of the race of men should survive. (41)
Column 1 on Tablet 11 begins the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative (Gardner 226). The sage
Utnapishtim from Shurippak (100 miles south of Babylon), says:
The great gods stirred their hearts to make the Flood.
[. . .] Build an ark.
[. . .] Load the seed of every living thing into your ark,
the boat that you will build.
Let her measure be measured;
let her breadth and length be equal.
Cover it with a roof as the abyss is covered. (Gardner 226)
There is no reason given by Utnapishtim for the deluge. On the contrary, the Judaic version of the
Flood in Genesis states in 6:5 8 a very clear, explicit reason for the

Gettysburg Why Was It A Turning Point Essay
The Battle of Gettysburg: Why Was It a Turning Point?
July 1, 1863, the bloodiest battle on American soil was just beginning, this battle would be known as
The Battle of Gettysburg. This three day battle commenced with Confederate attack led by General
Robert E. Lee, on the north of the small town of Gettysburg. Union President, Abraham Lincoln had
appointed George Meade as Union commander to counter coming attacks in Gettysburg. This battle
would involve other Confederate attacks, ending with a final Union blow on July 3. The final attack
by the Union was nicknamed as Pickett s Charge . This final Union charge led to a Confederate
retreat, most likely because the Confederates lost many of their soldiers. This begs the question: Why

In the beginning of the Civil War the Confederates clearly had the advantage, all the Confederates had
to do was defend their land. This made the Confederates look most likely to win the Civil War,
however, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union had the advantage. The four main reasons:
geography of the major battle campaigns, estimated casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg, and the
battle s aftermath showed this. The geography showed how this battle was the last battle shown in the
North. The estimated casualties showed that there were significant losses on both sides but the South
suffered a lot more. Union President Lincoln also told how the Union was affected because of this
battle.

Crime Scene Investigation Steps
Crime Scene Investigation
Logan Redd
Liberty University
Abstract
There are vital stages of crime scene investigation that will be portrayed and analyzed through
scholarly sources. A crime scene investigation must start with a crime committed, whether it be a
burglary or a homicide. The first responders (police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical
personnel, etc.) are called to the scene to assess the situation before the crime scene investigators and
detectives are called to the scene to start the investigation. After the scene is protected and secured, the
investigators and detectives will come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Protection of the crime scene starts when the first responding officer arrives at the scene. Often times,
the police officer s swoop and scoop idea prohibits all of the evidence and identification to be
discovered. Swoop and scoop is the process that many police officers take at crime scenes; they will
approach the scene and very quickly find evidence so that they can proceed to the next call. Police
officers, firefighters, and emergency medical workers are the first to arrive on scene to assess any
health concerns and make sure there are no perpetrators in the surrounding area. The task of the
emergency responders is to protect the scene before crime scene investigators arrive to scrutinize the
scene further. The emergency responders will explore the physical conditions at the crime scene, such
as hazardous or toxic materials, electrical problems, the weather, the structure of the crime scene, and
any dangerous people or animals in the surrounding area. If there are any dangerous conditions that
exist, they should be reported to the officer in charge so that the conditions can be addressed and
corrected so that the crime scene investigation can take place. Sometimes, but not often, personal
protective equipment will be utilized when working on a scene with hazardous conditions. Personal
protective equipment consists of hazmat suits, gloves, shoe covers,

GFW Censorship In China
Often times, people desire to have the ability to avoid any damaging publicity towards themselves and
their reputation, in China this is precisely what the government is doing. Rather than allowing users to
prospect the internet freely, they are constrained to being censored and patrolled by superior power.
The people of China are told lies by their government, only to impede further questioning of its
control. The Chinese government forces strict obedience to authority of their laws against the media in
attempt to prevent any disruption towards its sovereignty. The internet arrived in China for the first
time January, 1996, and the government started blocking foreign websites only 7 months later in
August of that year. Even though China ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

China makes sure that it s people will not provoke or question, but simply just follow. Ever since

Critical Reasoning And Battle Of Thermopylae
Critical Reasoning and Battle Analysis of the Battle of Thermopylae
One of the most historic battles fought in the 5th century BC was the Battle of Thermopylae. The
Greeks and Persians battled for control of a narrow pass located at Thermopylae. This pass served as
the most direct route into mainland Greece and allowed freedom of maneuver to the Persians. The
Persians received a critical piece of human intelligence that allowed them to defeat the Greeks at the
pass. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the battle and determine an alternate outcome based on
the use of that intelligence.
The Battle of Thermopylae
Definition of the Battle
The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 5th century BC in Northern Greece. The primary adversaries
were the Persians and the Greeks. The Persian army, led by Xerxes I, far outnumbered the Greek
forces. Despite this, the Greeks were able to maintain control of the pass for three days.
The Settings of the Battle
Strategic and operational overview. The battle of Thermopylae was one of many battles fought by the
Persians in the quest to expand their empire, and the second in their quest to rule Greece. The Greeks
fought at the battle of Thermopylae to maintain rule of their own land and resist submission to the
Persians. In 491 BC, King Darius of Persia sent messengers to demand the Greeks submit to Persian
rule. The Greeks refused and incited the first battle in the war between Persia and Greece. This battle,
fought at Marathon

Privacy s Perception Of Privacy
This ever present, Big Brother like surveillance messes with people s perceptions of their privacy.
Naturally, when you are constantly being watched by someone or something, you perceive a loss of
privacy. People are concerned about privacy; they are afraid that the digital systems they use on an
everyday basis may bring unwanted effects into their lives. (Lahlou, 2008, p. 300) In his article,
Lahlou presents an alternate way of viewing privacy that better SOMETHING HERE Lahlou points

A back region or backstage can be defined as a place, relative, to a given performance, where the
impression fostered by the performance is knowingly contradicted as a matter of course. (Goffman,
1959, p. 69) The information someone presents about themselves in their front region differs from the
information that person presents in the back region.
Lahlou draws a Goffman s idea of a front and back stage to define what he calls the face. He defines a
face as a sort of expected role. The face is what a subject is at a given moment. (Lahlour, 2008, p. 317)
Different types of faces include expert, a manager, a project member, a company employee, a friend,
etc (Lahlou, 2008, p.314) He defines being in private when one does not have to wear a specific face.
The transition from face to face could be analogous to the transition between front stage and
backstage. When a person is alone, they are a combination of all of their faces; they do not have to put
any particular face because there is no expected role when they are alone.
In somewhat of a contrast to the traditional view of privacy, Lahlou claims that privacy issues
emerged from role conflicts between activities. (Lahlou, 2008, p.

Using bones, teeth and joints for reconstructing activity...
During an individual s lifetime the activities they involve themselves in impact on their many bodily
tissues. Markers for these activities are left in the bones, joints and dentition which is useful for
anthropologists as only skeletal material is left in the case of most ancient populations. Subsequently
much research has been undertaken in this area with varying levels of validity. In this essay I seek to
explain what information can be reliably gathered from skeletal material, it will focus on bone density
and muscle attachments associated with heavy workloads, joint wear caused by repeated processes
such as grinding grain, osteoarthritis and tooth wear associated with tool use. To aid this discussion I
will detail the activity changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Food gathering, butchering and carrying materials for fires and temporary shelters are all fairly short
but high intensity physical exercise. Subsequently in hunter gatherer populations there is a trend in the
archaeological record for higher bone density and greater cortical bone thickness in cross section
(Maggiano et al, 2008). The opposite is true of agricultural societies of the past. Activities involved
with agriculture are often slow, repetitive low load level tasks such as weeding, sowing seeds and the
picking and harvesting of crops (Bridges, 1989). These activities are mainly upper body activities and
are more commonly associated with joint wear and osteoarthritis, which I will mention later. Muscle
attachments are the sites on the bone where ligaments are anchored, these may become exaggerated in
individuals with larger than average musculature. Based on the crude argument that hunter gatherers
used leg muscles in day to day activities and agricultural peoples used their upper body in activity
more it stands to reason that the respective muscle attachments would be enlarged. Molnar for
example attempts to trace general as well as three specific prehistoric activities: archery, harpooning,
and kayaking that are likely to have been performed in past populations from the Baltic sea area using

Return on Investment for Media Carts As mentioned in this report, the return on investment is not
immediate but there are long term advantages to using the Media Cart. The advertising and
suggestions made to the consumer can cater to reducing excess inventory before spoilage occurs,
improving the effectiveness of sales, and introduce consumers to brands which may interest him or
her; these directives can increase sales and decrease loss. The on board navigation system will help
customers to find the products they are seeking; this allows the customer to find products without
taking time from the customer service employees. Use of the navigation system also allows customer
to find what products they are looking for; if they find the product at Kudler they are less likely to go
to another store and give the sale to a competitor. Long term, the cart also can be part of an expedited
check out system that decreases congestion during the check out process (Media Cart, 2010).
Consumers scan items as they put them into their carts and directly into bags. At the end of their
shopping experience, they move the cart onto the scale to check for accuracy and for additional items,
before they pay and leave; this process could save money by reducing customer service personnel. The
customer saves time through the use of the built in navigation system, the system directs the customer

The Negative Impacts Of Globalization In Business
The mankind is leaving in the era of changing. Whether we want or not, it is obviously that the present
world is different compare with even 20 years ago. This world has become significantly connected and
integrated. Globalization processes have affected all aspects of human s life and a business has not
been an exception. While these changes concern every person of the society it is still very important to
obtain the knowledge which will remain him competitive and help him to be in trend. Even though the
Globalization has some negative aspects for businesses, but it also gives such significant benefits as an
opportunity to develop a business all over the world, changing and challenging the way of doing
business through a new concept of management in a free world.
Sceptics believe that the free market and globalization will lead to bankruptcy of local businesses.
Certainly, as any other things in this world, globalization has both negative and positive effects on
economy in general and business specifically. Moreover, local society claims that domestic markets
might be captured by the foreign companies. In addition, homeland firms could be not developed
enough to defeat their market from invasions because of competitive disabilities. On the other hand,
using international statistics and experience, we could say that business is a competition let the best
win. It is the truth that only the best will get a victory, but it is also true that business is for the strong.

founder of Scientology and had personally mentored Miscavige during his youth. In 1986, Hubbard
passed away and Miscavige became his successor. There are many claims of abuse, especially in more

indirectly, to Miscavige and his regulations for the church of Scientology. Probably the most harmful

He states that disconnection is absolutely enforced on members and is actively used as a fear tactic. It
is not just the act of leaving the church that warrants disconnection, but not abiding by rules and
speaking out against the church would bring about one being disconnected from any Scientologist,
including family members. The family member that is disconnected is treated as if they no longer
exist. Some members have been a part of Scientology their entire lives and have no outside education,
job experience, money, or support. The act of leaving and would be the act of basically ending their

practice and is not upfront about it, per Rinder and multiple others including actress Leah Remini

church. Rinder states in his blog that the church, mainly Miscavige, knows that this practice is
repulsive and uses their website s explanation to convince others to join the church without full
knowledge of what they are truly getting involved in.

Hubbard wrote about persons that members of the church should look out for. Rinder shows how

Renaissance Arranged Marriage
Arranged marriage in the Renaissance era was very popular among Florentine families. This was the
way of life for multiple different reasons. Arranged marriages were the way things were run in order to
bring two families together. The two families hopes were to gain an alliance and more importantly
gain wealth. Another objective was producing offspring more specifically boys that could eventually
inherit the family wealth and power. Although there were many positives with arrange marriage, there
were also a numerous amount of negatives with this lifestyle. Arranged marriage was a complicated
business. The girls were usually anywhere from fourteen to seventeen years of age with a difference of
fifteen to twenty years to their husbands or even greater if it were his second marriage. Girls were
young because with they way society worked they wanted the girls to be able to produce as many
children as possible. The goal was to have the young girl pregnant every other year until she was done
ovulating. Although this seems like it would end with an enormous amount of children that was not
the case because many children did not survive. On the other hand, men were older when married
because society wanted them to have a social network and wealth and such. With the wife being

The Importance Of Cremation
Cremation
Studies have provided an understanding and argue that the choice to cremate or bury the dead may
have been one of the biggest decisions for the Anglo Saxons (Williams, H. 2002). But also, that we
should take into consideration that cremation was a show and helped define social distinctions within
the living society, as the inclusion in the rite would define your social distinction (Williams, H. 2002).
Cremation also enhanced relationships between the living and the dead, as a rite of passage served to
dissolve and reconstitute not only the identities of the dead but also those of the mourners. Cremation
rites are social events that aim to re form the dead in the eyes of society and the world (Williams, H.
2002).
Many Anglo Saxon cremation burials have been compared to pagan burials, and are also believed to
be also the same thing as the Anglo Saxon gods Woden, Thunor and Tiw are seen in runes on the
cremation urns and in grave goods Many Anglo Saxon cremation burials (Williams, H. 2002).
Whetstones have also been found in cremation rites as well as holed urns, runic pot decorations and
bones fragments from sacrificed animals, these are believed to also link the Anglo Saxon s with pagan
burials as these are common pagan elements found in similar burials (Williams, H. 2002).
Cremation is believed to have held meaning spiritually to the Anglo Saxons, that burning the dead
may have released its spirit, that by doing so this may have also stopped the dead from hurting

Masculinity in the Works of Herman Melville
Herman Melville s novels, with good reason, can be called masculine. Moby Dick may, also with
good reason, be called a man s book and that Melville s seafaring episode suggests a patriarchal, anti
feminine approach that adheres to the nineteenth century separation of genders. Value for masculinity
in the nineteenth century America may have come from certain expected roles males were expected to
fit in; I argue that its value comes from examining it not alone, but in relation to and in concomitance
with femininity. As Richard H. Brodhead put it, Moby Dick is so outrageously masculine that we
scarcely allow ourselves to do justice to the full scope of masculinism (Brodhead 9). I concur with
Brodhead in that remark, and that Melville s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rather than conforming to aged, socially constructed masculine roles, Melville is challenging them by
concealing feminine characteristics in his most manly concepts; he is trying to take a man born in once
independent Man, and, in this novel, now [unman] Man (M D 391). [S]mall erections may be finished
by their first architects, Ishmael reflects to himself about the Cathedral of Cologne, but grand ones,
true ones, ever leave the copestone to posterity. God keep me from completing anything (M D 125).
Melville uses ancient architecture and constructions as phallic metaphors to imply that they must
remain incomplete if they are to remembered as grand and true . A chapter in which gender sentiments
are comically muddled is the chapter known as The Tail , where Melville takes part in disassembling,
at the same time celebrating, this obviously phallic symbol and uses careful and also obvious language
to stress its feminine, as well as masculine, qualities. In the tail the confluent measureless force of the
whole whale seems concentrated to a point (M D 294), Melville describes what superficially sound as
only be phallic and masculine qualities. However, Melville does not allow the tail to be easily written

The Concept Of Absorption Isotherms
2.4. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic studies
2.4.1. Adsorption isotherms
Adsorption isotherms describe the equilibrium between the adsorbents and adsorbate to optimize the
use of adsorbents and introduce a design and operation of adsorption systems by the correlation of
experimental data through the theoretical equations. Isotherm studies were performed by mixing the
optimum dose of both adsorbents with Pb2+ solution at different initial concentration (25 250 mg/l)
and shaking for the optimum time at room temperature. The data was fitted into the following
isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin Raduskevich.

Essay On Psychotropic Drugs
Psychotropic drugs are, according to medicine.net, are drugs affecting the central nervous system, that
have the capability to affect one s behavior, emotions, and the mind. Since these drugs affect the
human mind and behavior, there is plenty or suspicion and controversy surrounding them, especially
when it comes to prescribing them to adolescents between the ages of nine to seventeen years old. The
prescription of mind altering drugs, to such a young, underdeveloped crowd, is a cause for concern
due to the excessive amount of of pills these students popping and the effects they re having on their
developing brains. Psychotropic medications are helpful in altering the minds of these victims of

Touching Spirit Bear Change
Cole Matthews Journey of Change
What is a crime? An action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state
and is punishable by law. Cole Matthews is classified as a criminal. We see him commit numerous
crimes throughout Touching Spirit Bear, such as, breaking into a hardware store, trashing that same
hardware store, assaulting Peter Driscal, etc. Our intuition of Cole Matthews at the beginning of the
book is not very pleasant but, as we read on, we see how Cole Matthews does change into a more
responsible and calm individual. Cole Matthews is obviously responsible for this change but, there
were many other people that had a vast influence on him. By examining Garvey s guidance, Edwin s

When Cole had first reached island, Edwin had given advice to Cole about how to live on the island,
Nobody s going to babysit you here. If you eat you ll live. If not, you ll die. This land can provide for
you or kill you. Winters are long. Cut plenty of wood or you ll freeze. Keep things dry, because wet
kills. This island is covered with Devil s Club. Don t grab it or hundreds of tiny thistles will infect
your hands and make them swell up like sausages. The stream over there is where you get fresh water,
(17). By giving this advice, it is clear that Edwin wants Cole to be safe on the island. Edwin had even
built a shelter for Cole on the island. Edwin had left Drake, his homeland, and came to Minneapolis
just to attend Cole s Circle Justice meetings, which shows his determination to help Cole. At a Circle
Justice meeting, after Cole had attempted to kill the Spirit bear, Edwin had proved how Cole had
changed through an effective demonstration that changed everyone s perspective on Cole and his
identity, People change two ways with slow persistence pressure, or with a single and sudden
traumatic experience. That s why people often change so much when they have a near death
experience. I believe something significant happened to Cole on the island, (128). By manifesting this
demonstration, it was clear that Edwin believed in Cole and he believed Cole had really changed.
Later, when Cole had been sent back to the island as a second chance, Edwin had provided Cole with
many techniques in which he would relieve his anger, such, dipping into the pond in the morning and
carrying the ancestor rock, Happiness, like anger, is also a habit. You learn to be happy one day at a

he couldn t get rid of anger, which made Cole stop doubting himself, People send lifetimes breaking

The Mountains Are Known For Cutting Through The Landscape...
The mountains are known for cutting through the landscape like glaciers. The Kancamagus Highway,
or The Fearless One cuts through Lincoln, New Hampshire to Conway, New Hampshire. Rich in
history as well winding roads, and mammoth mountains are often traveled by the fearless, and
adventurous traveler. For some, the stumble upon this great beauty is minute and not appreciated, but
for others the venture is a state of mind and continues to inspire long after the visit concluded. The
Kancamagus Highway evokes the emotion of nostalgia. Entering the area I first noticed the
mountains, covered in rugs of green, gold, ember red, and burning orange trees. The mountains were
the spines of the land, holding together the whole landscape. Off to a distance shining white pyramids
could be seen. The tops of the mountains soared up to the sky and to the heavens as to kiss the stars
with the cold peaks. I was just a quiet, minute observer of there glorious range. They stood ghost like,
and the only thing bigger then these slumbering giants was my gaze when taking them in. As I turn
from the outlook, leaving the booming mountains to my back I notice the trees. Making up this
glowing landscape were the burning leaves of the treas. The canopy of color burned with high
intensity. Each leaf was chattering in the wind making up faint rustling, perhaps to keep the forests
secret below. Nature s sympathy was conducting itself is a small crescendo. The trees were tall enough

What is stress? According to a journal, Stress is a state of mental tension and worry caused by
problems in your life, works, family and many more. It is also something that causes strong feelings of
worry or anxiety and physical force or pressure. What is that means with stress is in the eyes of the

The higher amount of glucose level in our body will lead to diabetes.
The fifth effect on your body is depression and anxiety. It s probably no surprise that chronic stress is
connected with higher rates of depression and anxiety. One survey of recent studies found that people
who had stress related to their jobs, like demanding work with few rewards had an 80% higher risk of
developing depression within a few years than people with lower stress.
The next disease is Alzheimer. One animal study found that stress might worsen Alzheimer s disease,
causing its brain lesions to form more quickly. Stress has the potential to slow down the progression of
the disease.
Stress also can accelerate aging of someone that had stress. There s actually evidence that stress can
affect how you age. Stress seemed to accelerate aging about 9 to 17 additional years. One of a book
that I read tells a story about a mother and a daughter that have stress. A research studies their body
condition and they found out that the daughter is actually older than what she looks now. Those

Stress also can cause premature death. Clear evidence that we can easily get is in the newspaper.

The purpose of this report is to justify why the government or states should impose taxes on sugary
manufactured products. Sugary manufactured products such as beverages, juice and many others have
negative impacts on health. The consumers of the sugary products can suffer from several diseases
which arise due to consumption of a lot of artificial sugar such as sucrose, glucose and many others.
Many healthy experts believe that heavy taxation of sugary products, by the government will lower
the rate of obesity and diabetes among people.
Sugar in drinks and food contributes to many diseases such hypertension, tooth decay, diabetes, and

Peaceful Resistance In America
Peaceful resistance positively impacts a free society, particularly in a Democracy such as the United
States. Abraham Lincoln famously described our national foundation as a government of the people,
by the people, for the people , and for such a statement to be true, it is necessary that voices of US
citizens be heard.
The right to peaceful resistance in America can be tied back to our nation s true beginning: The
Declaration of Independence. The document proclaims that it is the Right of the people to alter or
abolish a government in order to create a safer and more secure system (Mirkin 64). With this
ideology in mind, our forefathers crafted the Constitution, and created the Bill of Rights to establish

Tropical Deforestation and Its Effect on Global Climate...
Tropical Deforestation and Its Effect on Global Climate
Abstract
Rainforests are the predominant natural vegetation throughout the wet tropics. The defining
characteristics of a tropical rainforest are temperature and rainfall. Wherever temperature is high
enough and rainfall heavy and regular enough, there is rainforest (Bagheera, 1996). Tropical
rainforests of all kinds once covered approximately 14 percent of the Earth s surface, more than eight
million square miles (Conservation International, 1998); forming an equatorial green belt around the
Earth rich in diverse plant and animal species. Humans have already destroyed half of this forest area,
with most damage occurring in the last 200 years (Bagheera, 1996). In 1987 alone ... Show more

In contrast to destructive practices that profit a few but destroy the forest for all, intact tropical
rainforests provide long term, widely distributed benefits. These benefits include increased
biodiversity, protection of wildlife, food, fuel, medicines, building materials, and global climate
stabilization (Bagheera, 1996,p.2). Due to the magnitude of tropical deforestation that has occurred, its
potential affect on loss of biodiversity and alteration of world climate, this is arguably the most
important global conservation issue today (Kricher, 1997).
Discussion
Global warming and tropical deforestation have a symbiotic relationship, each being a causal factor
for the breakdown of the other. For each hectare of forest that is cleared and burned, about 220 tons of
carbons are released into the atmosphere (Holloway, 1993). Carbon is released primarily in the form
of CO2, carbon dioxide, with the burning of fallen vegetation from cleared forest. In addition, the
cleared forest is no longer there to act as a sink for carbon dioxide to take it up in the process of
photosynthesis (Kricher, 1997). The build up of carbon dioxide causes sunlight to be trapped in the
atmosphere and through the greenhouse effect the Earth s temperature rises (Myers, 1979). Over the
past century the global average temperature has already increased by about half a

Edgar Allan Poe s Leathery
Streaks of shimmering sunlight filtered through a golden canopy of trees, casting elegant shadows to
dance across the mossy verdure. The lush grass was invested with thriving insects that swarmed on the
ground like an overcrowded marketplace. The crickets made a harmonious song that echoed
throughout the forest, almost in sync with the repetitive calls of exotic animals that were crawling
through shrubbery and soaring high in the leafy giants. Leathery leaves brushed against each other in
the feeble breeze, almost as if they were whispering in hushed tones whilst squirrels ran and frolicked
in the bushes.
A balmy smell lingered in the humid air, mixing with the scent of damp earth. Flowers were dotted
across the luscious forest floor; their enticing fragrance leaving an odd taste in their wake. Vines
twisted up the trees, reaching magnificent heights though some hung down like curtains, hiding parts
of the forest away in darkness. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Canines were first used by Pharaoh Rameses II. Rameses II used war dogs, with spiked collars, that
raced ahead of his armies. By turning the gentle Mastiff into a fearless and vicious fighter, the Romans
were able to instill fear and terror into armies. They would wrap the massive canine in spike covered
armor and have it charge at full speed. Canines were used, not only for attack in this manner, but also
to warn of an impending attack and to send messages (Aiello and Bacon 17 18). Elephants were used
to terrorize and create mass destruction in enemy front lines. Though they were difficult to train and
control, many believed that the destruction caused by elephants was worth the effort taken to train
them. Animals were an important part of ancient warfare and their use has continued until today.
Due to the invention and development of the engine, the use of horses in military and warfare has been
phased out of practice. In poorer, less developed nations, horses, as well as camels, continue to be
used for transportation, and in modern times, there are certain circumstances where military forces

become unnecessary, due to the advancing times and technologies. One example is the carrier pigeon,

The Development Of Telescope
Throughout human history, civilization was built and developed upon a sense of mystery. In the
ancient time, people believed the existence of eternal God, who lived beyond people s vision in the
vastness of dark sky, and developed their own routine upon that. Observed this mysterious sky for
centuries, Greek astronomer Ptolemy finally developed a geocentric model in the Second Century A.D
in his book Almagest. In his work, Ptolemy made all of his assumptions were purely based on
observations. In 1543, a Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus polished a heliocentric model,
which again was derived on visual evidences. These revolutionary discoveries took years to complete.
As a comparison, modern astronomical science, which explains the origin of the universe and life
cycle of stars, was established and rapidly developed in merely four hundred years: people now
understood so much about the universe. These astonishing developments were the result of
observational technology advancement: everything people know about this universe is from
observation. From simple optical telescopes to radio telescopes and high energy telescopes, people
constantly improve observational technologies to make more discoveries. This scientific development
reached its climax as people launched a revolutionary telescope above the atmosphere for a better
quality of image. These revolutionary changes in observational technology help this universe be more
comprehensive to human. The first telescope like

Rhetorical Modes Of Pathos In Ursula Le Guin
One can unknowingly suffer for the sake of society s convenience. Both authors, Ray
Bradbury and Ursula Le Guin, demonstrate the suffering that the protagonist endures in order to serve
their society. A variety of rhetorical strategies and modes contribute to the overall role of the
protagonists. Ray Bradbury uses personification and the rhetorical mode of pathos to convey the
oblivious suffering that the protagonist, the smart house , undergoes. Ursula Le Guin utilizes diction
and the rhetorical mode of pathos to demonstrate the society s dependency on the life of a young,
hopeless boy. Through the authors use of diction, personification, and the rhetorical mode of pathos,
readers can view both short stories in a new criticism lense and juxtapose two societies that feature a
suffering aspect in each story.
In Ray Bradbury s short story, August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains , the protagonist is the only
house left standing in Allendale, California after a nuclear explosion.
However, the protagonist is not an average house. The house is technologically programmed to carry
out all of the tasks and duties of an ordinary family. Although the family that lived in the house before
the explosion are no longer present, the house carries out its scheduled routine. At the beginning of the
story, Bradbury explains that memory tapes glided and chimed out the passing time while no doors
slammed, no carpets took the soft tread of rubber heels . The house has become abandoned, yet, it
continues to exercise its daily functions. Ray Bradbury also gives
Robinson 2 life to the house in a way that it seems to be a human. The weather box on the front door
sang quietly: rain, rain, go away; rubbers, raincoats for today... is a prime example of the way
Bradbury brings life to the empty house. Another example of personification that Bradbury uses in his
short story is, It quivered at each sound, the house did. If a sparrow brushed a window, the shade
snapped up. The house seems to have a mind of its own. In August 2026: There Will
Come Soft Rains, the house continues to function even though the family and residents of the town
has suffered from the nuclear explosion. In Ray Bradbury s August 2026: There Will
Come Soft

house flies can spread diseases through the germs they are carrying on their legs, it is important you
tackle this pest problem before it becomes the plot of a bad movie. Here are three ways you can beat

scares the flies away. There is no scientific evidence to support this one way or the other, but there are
many people who swear it works well. At worst it is going to cost you a plastic bag and four cents so it
is worth trying at your own home. Pest Control If the flies are getting to the stage where you are afraid
to open the back door for fear of them trying to swarm in, it is time to call in the pest controllers.
There are two main ways a pest controller can help to control your fly problem: Fly baits. Fly baits are
available in spray and granule formulas and these are scattered away from the door to attract the flies
to a different area. They have pheromones and odors built into them to act as a lure. When flies feed
on them, death occurs. Surface sprays. Surface sprays are also an effective way for fly control. Areas
in the backyard patio area are coated with a spray that will kill flies when they land on it. Bear in mind
that some pest control products are harmful to animals, so make sure to discuss your types of pets with
the pest controller before any product is

Language Of Haitian Voodoo
Most Haitians are Christians who practice within the catholic faith, 7th day Adventist, Protestants,

this belief, they practice rituals to help bind the body and the soul. Voodoo is a form of magic
described by many Haitians as a former form of healing and meditation of the troubled spirit. Many
Haitians also proceed to explain that the magic of voodoo have evolved to a form of black magic,
where those who practices it take haughtiness aim to cause harm to their enemies. The native language

The Failure Of The Soviet Union
There is a myriad of factors that accounted for the dissolution of the USSR, and the consolidation of
capitalist superiority from 1991 onwards after the fall of an autocracy, and demise of a disunited
provisional government. The official declaration of the termination of the Soviet Union was December
26 1991; this collapse was addressed by the west as the defeat of communism, and the end of the Cold
War. To understand how and why this previously prosperous nation came to fall it is important to look
at the major factors contributing to this disarray. I will examine the economic and ethnic problems the
Soviet Union faced, as well as the problems with those in power.

The Psychological Cost Of Children During The American...
Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is a former army Ranger, paratrooper, and west point psychology professor.
Grossman is a world renown expert in the field of human aggression and the psychology of combat
(Grossman et. al, 2007). In his book, On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War
and Society, he talks about non firing rate. Non firing rate is the percentage of soldiers who freeze up
during combat, and do not fire their weapon. There has been documentation of non firing rate dating
back to 1863, during the American Civil War. There is even documentation to prove that both World
War I and II soldiers displayed the same consistence in failing to fire their weapons; but why is this
important? The weapons had the proficiency to kill, but the soldier holding the weapon did not. All the
documentation of soldier s inability to fire their weapon indicates that there is a psychological power
greater than military training (Gorssman et. al., 1995). This force acts as a blockade, preventing man
from standing before man, and engaging in the conscious act of taking the life of a person. Even when
faced with the decision to kill the man standing before him, or be killed, evidence shows that man will
be killed before he kills (Grossman et. al., 1995). Thus, providing the evidence needed to indicate
humans are not born with the capability to kill. Engaging in combat has taken a tole on the mental
well being of the military service members.

#7 Explain the interfaith boundaries created when the former Yugoslavia dissolved and what conflict
these caused. Be specific.
Yugoslavia was a unified body of six southeastern countries. Serbia and Bosnia Herzegovina are a few
of the provinces that made up Yugoslavia. Tensions arose after the assassination of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia Herzegovina, which initiated the beginning of World War
II. During WWII, Yugoslavia was under the rule of Communist Dictator Josip Tito. The first to
successfully implement national communism, Marshal Tito united the provinces of Yugoslavia. After
the death of Josip Tito in the year 1980, the national identity fell apart; the various Yugoslav republics
each believed their culture

Discrimination In Sports
It s 2016 now, the U.S. Women s soccer team is in its prime. They won the World Cup of 2016 and are
currently ranked the number one team in the world. When they won the World Cup, as a whole they
got paid $2 million dollars. The U.S. Men s team had lost in the first round of their World Cup, yet
they were paid $8 million dollars. Imagine how much more the U.S. Men s team would have made if
they won. Although men and women play the same sport at a high level, men unfairly earn a higher
wage than women. Although many things have changed over the years, there are many more changes
that need to come. Discrimination has occurred ever since the dawn of time and is still a very common
issue today. Soccer is a very popular sport all throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Roseville Area High School Case Study
Roseville Area High School, locally referred to as RAHS , possesses a schedule similar to that of an
immense quantity of public schools throughout the United States. Due to such similarities to the
standard American education system, the typical weekly schedule has applied, allowing a period of
rest consisting of Saturday and Sunday often taken for granted by modern society. However, despite
the separation of days within the majority of the school year having proven optimal, the time in which
one is expected to be prepared for awaiting academic endeavors, currently identified as 8:10 AM, has
been scientifically revealed as detrimental to health, as pubescent individuals necessitate an immense
period of sleep in accomodation to daily assignments. In addition to ... Show more content on

Due to such importance, Orion High School would delay the current schedule in place by one hour
and twenty minutes, allowing arrival at 9:30 AM. However, as a result of the revised agenda, dismissal
would thus occur at a later hour, failing to grant high school students adequate time to sleep and study
alike. Therefore, in effort of the promotion of superior education, the time in which one is expected to
remain in class must be reduced, resulting in a dismissal at 2:40 PM, identical to that of Roseville
Area High School, as well as a slight increase in the length of the year, often extending into early July.
In addition to allowing the accomodation of the physical and academic necessities of students within
the pubescent stage of life, a possibility through school s increment of ten months, in effort of equal
distribution of academically derived stress, spring vacation will thus be delayed one month. Through
the alterations in the hourly and yearly schedule common among educational establishments, Orion

The Perception Of A Social Group
The ability to manipulate perception when it comes to social movements or collective action is key.
Not just for those on the outside looking in, but those who are participating as well. It not only
determines what a social group will do to invoke change, it will also affect how a society will agree or
disagree with the change. This manipulation of perception is best defined as framing, and is more than
just labeling something as good or bad. Pulling from the articles read from this week the most
convincing conceptualization of the term framing was the argument that it consisted of three elements,
with the first being the diagnosis of something as problematic and need for alteration, followed by a
proposed solution that specifies what needs to be done, and finally a call to rational engagement in
corrective action. (Snow Benford 1988) The first point highlighted the importance of contention when
it comes to collective action. Problems within any given society are prevalent at all times, however,
not until there is a call for a change does collective action occur. Contention rests in the need for a
change, whether or not opportunity is the catalyst for contention is debatable, however the
conceptualizing of framing laid out by Snow and Benford also brings into question whether or not
collective action is a choice rather than a response. In the each of the three steps mentioned above
there has to be a framing. There has to be a framing of a situation as problematic and

I. PEST ANALYSIS OF AIR ASIA
a. Political analysis of Air Asia
Air Asia is an airline that operates scheduled international and domestic flights. Bilateral agreement is
one of the main obstacles for low cost carriers. And so does landing charges, it also influences the low
cost airlines which led to the underdevelopment as the aviation market remains tightly regulated by air
rights agreements. Other political rules that affect Air Asia airlines are:
 Government decisions as there are some specific routes, landing rights and ownership which affect
the operations of the airlines.
 Human resource policies also being affected as the recruitment and selection of staffs are based on
racial composition.
Opportunities Threats Privatization and deregulation of goverment presented an opportunity for new
routes and airport deals through open skies agreements between countries, or the permission of entry

Volunteering In The Surgical Waiting Room
People and onions do not appear to have too much in common. Onions are vegetables and
conveniently have several times more DNA than we do. However, like onions, people, especially the
elderly, have a lot of time under their belt and many layers that require effort and determination to
reach. I want to work with the elderly because I believe that the hard work that it takes to understand
them is rewarding from listening to nostalgic stories of the good ol days to life changing advice that
was gained from decades of experience.
Volunteering in the Surgical Waiting Room every week, I meet family members of patients, many of
whom are elderly. Talking to them often takes their mind off of waiting for surgery results. Once, I

Why Business Management Is Becoming A Successful Business
Abstract Owning a business is often a dream of many people but the reality of entrepreneurship can be
an amazing experience. It takes a lot of planning and dedication for a business to be successful. Small
business management is becoming very popular in the society in which we live. More and more
people are looking to going into business for themselves. This paper will discuss how to start a
business and it will also focus on the importance of family helping to run a successful business.
Owning a business can be good or it can be bad but it takes a lot to maintain a successful business or
even the thought of starting one. Dictionary.com defines entrepreneur as a person who organizes and
manages any enterprise, especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although owning a business has many benefits and provides many opportunities, anyone planning to
enter the world of entrepreneurship should be aware of its potential drawbacks. Individuals who prefer
the security of a steady paycheck, a comprehensive benefit package, a two week paid vacation, and the
support of a corporate staff probably should not go into business for themselves (Scarborough, 2014,
p. 12). There are a lot of things that go into owning a small business and planning is one of the major
elements when it comes to even thinking of owning a business of any size whether it is small, medium
or large.
When I begin to think about how important planning was to a business I thought back to my teachings
as a child into my adult life about how the Bible talks to us about planning and being prepared. It also
reminded me the principals in which God teaches us about preparing his people to be sufficient and
taking care of themselves in order to provide not only for themselves and their family but in helping
others also. In planning a business it takes prayer and being faithful to seeing your dream to fruition.
This is not a small endeavor when it comes to a business.
Planning is an important tool in thinking about how a business should be started as well as how things
will begin to come together for the business to come to fruition. The bible also teaches us about things
we should look at when looking to start a business.

Cornelius Vanderbilt is one of the five tycoons of America. He was able to use both wit and his
entrepreneurial skills in order to create a very successful career and legacy. Starting off from the very
beginning, young Vanderbilt was able to start his own business. At the age of sixteen, Vanderbilt
decided to start his own ferry service with the loan he received by working through his Mother. With
the one hundred he was able to obtain, by clearing and planting eight acre field, Vanderbilt purchased
two small vessels and carried freight and passengers from Manhattan to Staten Island. By being able
to utilize his own earnings in order to start up a business for a chance to make an even more of a
profit, Vanderbilt was in a road to become a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As for Gibbons and Vanderbilt, the two lowered their rates, applied services, and also tried out new
technologies which all help lead them to become hugely profitable. And in 1829, Vanderbilt left
Gibbons to increase his own business.
Vanderbilt created his own steamship company. With a fleet of boats and a budget of $30,000 or
roughly $775,000 today, Vanderbilt successfully established a company along the Hudson River. He
used his usual tactic, reduced fare prices, to stir away any competitors. He then expanded between
New York and New England and Long Island. What helped his business to flourish was through
customer s loyalty. Because Vanderbilt was known to have reliable, safe and cheap steamboats,
Cornelius Vanderbilt s company skyrocketed. In 1830, Vanderbilt entered the Hudson River market
and competed against Steamboat Association. Due to Vanderbilt s success, Steamboat Association
purchased his Hudson River company for $150,000 in total. Because of the success he had, Vanderbilt
went to Long Island for another round. His business tactic and customer loyalty served him in the
right way.
The Gold Rush, where many go to California in hopes for gold, allowed Vanderbilt to begin an ocean
going service, between West Coast and Central America. At the time, Clipper ship was predominantly
the best type of transportation. However

  • 2. Long Hair Research Paper I. Introduction Hair is a distinctive characteristic of an individual and it grows on the bodies of humans for key reasons other than to look attractive. For many years, styling ones hair is a trend that the majority of people follow to portray their personality on their outer appearance. There are no issues with styling ones hair, but the problem arises when individuals use chemicals to change the natural appearance and components of their hair. Dyeing ones hair may not show negative results the first time it is applied, but what if the healthy appearance and elasticity of a person s hair is greatly influenced by hair dyes in the long run? Genesis of the Old Testament records a worldwide Flood early on in the history of human civilization. Tablet 11of the Sumero Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh also records a total Flood of the entire earth very early in mankind s development. Let s examine the two to determine if one could be the basis for the other. Nels M. In the Gilgamesh epic, Utnapishtim is not invested with any royal power or entrusted with any priestly office; from it we learn simply that he was a citizen of Shurippak (Tablet XI:23) and a man of considerable wealth (XI:70ff). (227) N.K. Sandars in the Introduction to his book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, sums up the involvement by the pagan gods in the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative: In the Gilgamesh flood Ishtar and Enlil are as usual the advocates of destruction. Ishtar speaks, perhaps in her capacity as goddess of war, but Enlil prevails with his weapon of the storm. Only Ea, in superior wisdom, either was not present, or being present was silent, and with his usual cunning saw to it that at least one of the race of men should survive. (41) Column 1 on Tablet 11 begins the Sumero Babylonian Flood narrative (Gardner 226). This made the Confederates look most likely to win the Civil War, however, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union had the advantage. The four main reasons: geography of the major battle campaigns, estimated casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg, and the battle s aftermath showed this. The geography showed how this battle was the last battle shown in the North. The estimated casualties showed that there were significant losses on both sides but the South suffered a lot more. Critical Reasoning And Battle Of Thermopylae Critical Reasoning and Battle Analysis of the Battle of Thermopylae One of the most historic battles fought in the 5th century BC was the Battle of Thermopylae. The Greeks and Persians battled for control of a narrow pass located at Thermopylae. This pass served as the most direct route into mainland Greece and allowed freedom of maneuver to the Persians. The Persians received a critical piece of human intelligence that allowed them to defeat the Greeks at the pass. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the battle and determine an alternate outcome based on the use of that intelligence. The Battle of Thermopylae Definition of the Battle The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 5th century BC in Northern Greece. The primary adversaries were the Persians and the Greeks. The Persian army, led by Xerxes I, far outnumbered the Greek forces. Despite this, the Greeks were able to maintain control of the pass for three days. Moby Dick may, also with good reason, be called a man s book and that Melville s seafaring episode suggests a patriarchal, anti feminine approach that adheres to the nineteenth century separation of genders. Value for masculinity in the nineteenth century America may have come from certain expected roles males were expected to fit in; I argue that its value comes from examining it not alone, but in relation to and in concomitance with femininity. • 31. Tropical Deforestation and Its Effect on Global Climate... Tropical Deforestation and Its Effect on Global Climate Abstract Rainforests are the predominant natural vegetation throughout the wet tropics. The defining characteristics of a tropical rainforest are temperature and rainfall. Wherever temperature is high enough and rainfall heavy and regular enough, there is rainforest (Bagheera, 1996). Tropical rainforests of all kinds once covered approximately 14 percent of the Earth s surface, more than eight million square miles (Conservation International, 1998); forming an equatorial green belt around the Earth rich in diverse plant and animal species. Humans have already destroyed half of this forest area, with most damage occurring in the last 200 years (Bagheera, 1996). In 1987 alone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In contrast to destructive practices that profit a few but destroy the forest for all, intact tropical rainforests provide long term, widely distributed benefits. These benefits include increased biodiversity, protection of wildlife, food, fuel, medicines, building materials, and global climate stabilization (Bagheera, 1996,p.2). Due to the magnitude of tropical deforestation that has occurred, its potential affect on loss of biodiversity and alteration of world climate, this is arguably the most important global conservation issue today (Kricher, 1997). Discussion Global warming and tropical deforestation have a symbiotic relationship, each being a causal factor for the breakdown of the other. For each hectare of forest that is cleared and burned, about 220 tons of carbons are released into the atmosphere (Holloway, 1993). Carbon is released primarily in the form of CO2, carbon dioxide, with the burning of fallen vegetation from cleared forest. In addition, the cleared forest is no longer there to act as a sink for carbon dioxide to take it up in the process of photosynthesis (Kricher, 1997). The build up of carbon dioxide causes sunlight to be trapped in the atmosphere and through the greenhouse effect the Earth s temperature rises (Myers, 1979). • 36. The Development Of Telescope Throughout human history, civilization was built and developed upon a sense of mystery. In the ancient time, people believed the existence of eternal God, who lived beyond people s vision in the vastness of dark sky, and developed their own routine upon that. Observed this mysterious sky for centuries, Greek astronomer Ptolemy finally developed a geocentric model in the Second Century A.D in his book Almagest. In his work, Ptolemy made all of his assumptions were purely based on observations. In 1543, a Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus polished a heliocentric model, which again was derived on visual evidences. These revolutionary discoveries took years to complete. As a comparison, modern astronomical science, which explains the origin of the universe and life cycle of stars, was established and rapidly developed in merely four hundred years: people now understood so much about the universe. These astonishing developments were the result of observational technology advancement: everything people know about this universe is from observation. • 37. Rhetorical Modes Of Pathos In Ursula Le Guin One can unknowingly suffer for the sake of society s convenience. Both authors, Ray Bradbury and Ursula Le Guin, demonstrate the suffering that the protagonist endures in order to serve their society. A variety of rhetorical strategies and modes contribute to the overall role of the protagonists. Ray Bradbury uses personification and the rhetorical mode of pathos to convey the oblivious suffering that the protagonist, the smart house , undergoes. Ursula Le Guin utilizes diction and the rhetorical mode of pathos to demonstrate the society s dependency on the life of a young, hopeless boy. Through the authors use of diction, personification, and the rhetorical mode of pathos, readers can view both short stories in a new criticism lense and juxtapose two societies that feature a suffering aspect in each story. In Ray Bradbury s short story, August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains , the protagonist is the only house left standing in Allendale, California after a nuclear explosion. However, the protagonist is not an average house. The house is technologically programmed to carry out all of the tasks and duties of an ordinary family. Although the family that lived in the house before the explosion are no longer present, the house carries out its scheduled routine. At the beginning of the story, Bradbury explains that memory tapes glided and chimed out the passing time while no doors slammed, no carpets took the soft tread of rubber heels . The house has become abandoned, yet, it continues to exercise its daily functions. Ray Bradbury also gives Robinson 2 life to the house in a way that it seems to be a human. The weather box on the front door sang quietly: rain, rain, go away; rubbers, raincoats for today... is a prime example of the way Bradbury brings life to the empty house. Another example of personification that Bradbury uses in his short story is, It quivered at each sound, the house did. If a sparrow brushed a window, the shade snapped up. The house seems to have a mind of its own. Grossman is a world renown expert in the field of human aggression and the psychology of combat (Grossman et. al, 2007). In his book, On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society, he talks about non firing rate. Non firing rate is the percentage of soldiers who freeze up during combat, and do not fire their weapon. There has been documentation of non firing rate dating back to 1863, during the American Civil War. There is even documentation to prove that both World War I and II soldiers displayed the same consistence in failing to fire their weapons; but why is this important? The weapons had the proficiency to kill, but the soldier holding the weapon did not. All the documentation of soldier s inability to fire their weapon indicates that there is a psychological power greater than military training (Gorssman et. al., 1995). This force acts as a blockade, preventing man from standing before man, and engaging in the conscious act of taking the life of a person. Even when faced with the decision to kill the man standing before him, or be killed, evidence shows that man will be killed before he kills (Grossman et. al., 1995). Not just for those on the outside looking in, but those who are participating as well. It not only determines what a social group will do to invoke change, it will also affect how a society will agree or disagree with the change. This manipulation of perception is best defined as framing, and is more than just labeling something as good or bad. Pulling from the articles read from this week the most convincing conceptualization of the term framing was the argument that it consisted of three elements, with the first being the diagnosis of something as problematic and need for alteration, followed by a proposed solution that specifies what needs to be done, and finally a call to rational engagement in corrective action. (Snow Benford 1988) The first point highlighted the importance of contention when it comes to collective action. Problems within any given society are prevalent at all times, however, not until there is a call for a change does collective action occur. Contention rests in the need for a change, whether or not opportunity is the catalyst for contention is debatable, however the conceptualizing of framing laid out by Snow and Benford also brings into question whether or not collective action is a choice rather than a response.
