Indie-Rock
By James Borland
Mise en scene
Clothes are generally slightly smarter and have a retro style often featuring Dr
martens and Harrington jackets. Shirts and polo shirts are often worn
However sometimes more casual items are worn such as retro trainers and
tracksuits mainly being Adidas. Props include electric guitars, drumsticks and
microphones. Jeans are mainly worn or chinos giving a smart casual look.
Parkas are also worn as indie-rock tends to cross with more mod styles. Often
John Lennon/Oasis style round sunglasses are worn. Indie rock artists would
not wear makeup as they are usually male and are not breaking boundaries.
Artists are often shown performing or sometimes just smoking and looking
stern to look/try to look working class. Most artists are younger however
some have grown up with artists such as Blur still being popular. The more
unknown bands tend to be a similar age to the reader with bands such as
RATBOY.
Examples of Artists
Most in the Indie-Rock genre are white but there is a little more
diversity in certain bands especially compared with rock music.
Here are examples of some people I know who fit the genre in
style and are also in a local band. They wear the clothes I stated
above and are all white expect for one who is mixed race. This
shows how there is some diversity in the genre.
Locations
Many photos are taken in just a studio but often indie bands are
shown to be performing at small venues or big festivals, as this is
the indie-rock scene. The NME often uses white backgrounds
with some lighting for their covers. I will try to do a similar style
as it fits the genre and is quite eye catching. Also they are
sometimes shown to be in a mock up of their living room or bed
room.
